Connections2014 Annual Report

Visit any of our four campuses,

whether in Greater Binghamton

or Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and

you’ll find welcoming communities,

where strangers quickly become

friends, and friends become

like family.

At United Methodist Homes,

you’ll also find the high-quality

care and maintenance-free living

that are just two of the reasons

why we have consistently earned

ratings that put us head and

shoulders above the rest.

As one of our residents says,

“United Methodist Homes is

a fantastic place to be.”

It is a place where the continuing

generosity of our donors and

volunteers, and the constant efforts

of our dedicated employees, help

us to continue our faith-based

legacy and tradition of providing

compassionate care and a

live-better lifestyle. It is a place

where you can become part of

the larger family that is our

United Methodist Homes.

Caring. Connecting. Community.

It’s not just a new tagline for United Methodist Homes.

It is a reflection of our total commitment to the mission and

vision of United Methodist Homes, and it is something that

has been our single-minded focus for nearly six decades.

We hope you’ll read on to find out why some very

special people think it’s such a very special place, too.

ast year was a profoundly important and transformational year for United Methodist Homes. Each of our four campuses underwent substantial renovations, which significantly enhanced the character of these communities. This work—although inconvenient at times for residents, families and staff—enables us to continue to deliver the quality of care and nurturing lifestyle for which we are known. Many of the distinctive improvements we’ve made on our campuses would not have been possible without your donations to the United Methodist Homes Foundation:

n At Elizabeth Church Manor in Binghamton we installed a Snoezelen multisensory therapy room.

n At our Hilltop Campus in Johnson City we completed two garden projects that help residents with memory illnesses safely enjoy the outdoors.

n In Tunkhannock we converted the front porch into the new four-season Joe Corey Family Room.

n At Wesley Village in Pittston we replaced the carillon and upgraded the workout room in the Irene Raeder Community Center.

These examples of exciting new projects make clear that your generosity does make a difference, in so many different ways, for so many different people. That’s also why we’re encouraging you to spend a few minutes with this annual report. In it you’ll see how some very special friends of United Methodist Homes have chosen to make a difference in ways that are very meaningful to them. Thank you for making your gift to the United Methodist Homes Foundation in 2014. Every contribution, whether large or small, helps us carry out our mission of providing our residents with the highest quality of care.

Sincerely,

Brian Picchini, President and CEO Calli Berg, Board Chair

The United Methodist Homes lost a true “Friend” on August 27, 2014 with the passing of Jeanne

M. Gordon, a member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church in Scranton. Jeanne was a former member of the United Methodist Homes boardand an active member of the Wesley Village Local Development Committee. She was also the founder of the Friends of the United Methodist Homes of Pennsylvania and served as president for more than 20 years. Each year the Friends sponsor the Wesley Village Spring Brunch and the Wesley Village Fall Classic Car Show. All proceeds from these events are set aside to eventually purchase items on the “wish list” of the campuses at Wesley Village andTunkhannock Manor. At the fall meeting of the Friends, requests are reviewed and voted on by the members, who are all volunteers from Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and the surrounding areas. The 2014 purchases have all been dedicated to Jeanne’s memory and include a WhisperGLIDE

wheelchair swing with canopy and a TelAgenda video announcement system for Wesley Village, along with a large gas grill, new patio furniture and a TelAgenda system for Tunkhannock Manor. In total these items are valued at more than $18,000.

Closest to Jeanne’s heart, however, was the “Christmas Angel Project” for both campuses. All Friends encourage members of their congregations to purchase appropriate gifts which, when added to those donated by United Methodist Homes employees, assures that every resident in our personal care and skilled nursing units receive packages to open on Christmas morning. Jeanne’s dedication to and love

for our residents was an inspiration to all who knew her. New Friends who will carry on Jeanne’s legacy are always welcome and should contact Danielle Janeski, executive director of our Pennsylvania campuses, at 570.655.2891 x236 for more information.

Memories are formed in unique ways, each as personal as a fingerprint. Those that become

the most poignant and meaningful are built around the people who have genuinely touched our lives. Estelle Andrews was one of those special people around whom countless memories—and lasting friendships—were built. As a longtime resident of Forty Fort, Pa. before moving to the Wesley Village Campus of United Methodist Homes during a freak Easter weekend snowstorm in 2007, her spirit, energy, wit and, most of all, her incredible smile captured the hearts of all those around her. Estelle was an independent-minded woman whose strength and tenacity were forged as indispensable by-products of the Great Depression. She had a successful career as a Realtor, and she was a remarkable problem solver who could get nearly anything done with one of her well-crafted letters. She was also fiercely devoted to and protective of her family and friends. Although Estelle had severe arthritis, her desire to remain in her own home was unwavering. She lived in a large three-story house, with the washer and dryer in the basement, and getting up and down the stairs had become far too difficult. However, despite her physical limitations, she was bound and determined to stay right where she was. Her daughter (also named Estelle Andrews) had become increasingly concerned about her mother’s well-being. This led to many conversations about relocating to a more user-friendly setting, including consideration of a move to California, where daughter

Estelle’s remarkable business career had taken her— a path she heavily attributes to her mother’s lifelong support, encouragement and determination.

“My Mom was a velvet-gloved force of nature,” her daughter said. In 2007 the two Estelles began evaluating alternatives to the current single-family home where Mom lived alone. They were specifically looking at continuing care retirement communities, like those operated by United Methodist Homes in Pennsylvania and New York, where residents can transition seamlessly from independent living to skilled nursing, depending on their needs. Mom’s primary care physician,

a gerontologist, recommended Wesley Village in nearby Pittston. When they went for a tour, mother and daughter were greeted by the late Charlie Ferguson, arguably Wesley Village’s most outgoing and well-known figure. “Charlie zipped up on his scooter and immediately

invited us to see his apartment. He was a major force,” daughter Estelle said. He continued to tout the benefits of a Wesley Village lifestyle, and he strongly recommended that Mom move there. After having her former boss sell her house, Estelle did move in at Wesley Village. She immediately made friends with Stan, her next-door neighbor, and Jean, who lived across the hall. Charlie also took her under his wing and got her involved in a wide variety of rewarding activities. Over the years Estelle enjoyed numerous excursions, playing bridge, bingo, Hawaiian poker, Wii bowling and tennis, and exercising in the fitness center. She also enjoyed the many special luncheons and dinners on campus,

but she was also firmly committed to maintaining her lifelong friendships and off-campus commitments, which she drove to in “The Silver Bullet”—her hybrid-electric Prius automobile. The two Estelles also became close friends with Jean’s wonderful daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Pete Senser. “Mom continued to have regular lunches, car trips, and other adventures with them even after Jean passed away,” daughter Estelle said. “That was an amazingly wonderful gift for me. I still have a warm relationship with them even though they now live in South Carolina.” Mom also became very close friends with Lena Staley, Nick and Mary Stefanoski, John Coleman and Diana Strunk. “I have been blessed to be able to continue these friendships after Mom’s passing,” her daughter said.

That happened nearly four years ago, and her own fond memories of her departed mother will never fade. “I wanted there to be someplace where Mom would always be remembered,” her daughter said, which led her to make a very generous gift to the United Methodist Homes Foundation. When the final phase of United Methodist Homes’ four-campus renovation project is completed next year, the new Estelle H. Andrews Friendship Room will be dedicated at Wesley Village, and a lovingly-chosen framed photo of her mother, circa 1940s, will be installed as a permanent fixture. “It will be a fitting memorial to a truly unique and

special woman,” daughter Estelle B. Andrews said. The two of them spent many treasured

hours there, where they had so much fun playing bridge, doing crafts,

and many other things that her Mom enjoyed. “She showed her amazing

artistic side in that room,” Estelle said. “She graciously gave away so many of

the beautiful things she made there, and that’s why I wanted her to be remembered

in a room that gave her so much joy.”

Jeff Dickson never imagined working for

his father after he graduated from Penn

State University with a degree in mechanical

engineering in 1980. He figured he’d find

his own way in the world, which is exactly

what he did for several years before the

pull of the family business brought him

back through the doors of KMS, a precision

sheet metal fabrication company in Luzerne,

Pa. founded by his dad, William, in 1954.

“It was not an easy decision,” Jeff said,

“but I learned the ropes from the bottom

up and took over the company in 1987.”

Today KMS has annual sales of more than

$30 million, with 150 employees and plants

in Luzerne and West Columbia, South Carolina.

Jeff’s son, also a Penn State alumnus, joined

the family business eight years ago and

started on the ground floor, just like his dad.

As chief executive officer, Jeff’s success comes

from decades of hard

work and a steadfast

vision built around

investing in the right

tools and having

them operated by

the right people.

When his mother,

Melba, now 95, fell

and broke her hip

two years ago,

Jeff took that same

mindset and went

looking for the right

place and the right

people to care for

her. He found both

at the Wesley

Village Campus of

United Methodist

Homes in Pittston.

Donor’s generosity is a reflection of compassionate care

“My mom had partial

hip replacement

surgery, and we

decided she shouldn’t

live alone any longer,”

Jeff said. His dad had

passed away in 1992.

“Mom was already

familiar with Wesley

Village. Her best

friends, Jerry and

Nancy, live here.

We didn’t need to

look anywhere else.”

As the head of a manufacturing company

that operates in a highly competitive global

marketplace, Jeff is a no-nonsense

decision maker who has developed

a keen eye for the things that really

matter, and he likes what he sees at

Wesley Village. “I’m amazed. Mom

loves it here, especially the aides.

She has made many friends, and

she’s as active as she can be. I’m

comfortable, too, knowing Mom is taken care of.

More people ought to come and visit because

they’d be pleasantly surprised.”

Jeff had also

learned about United

Methodist Homes’

$40 million four-

campus renovation

project, and he

recently made a

major gift to the

United Methodist

Homes Foundation.

“When you spend time

here as I do, you really

come to appreciate

what they do for

your loved one. Everyone is so nice,” Jeff said.

“I thought the construction campaign was a

very worthy cause.”

His business-minded perspective

is also tempered by reality and a

kind heart. “We’re all going to get

old. I see the residents and it just

hits a soft spot.”

Jeff has supported many worthy

causes over the years, and his

generosity to United Methodist Homes will not

be forgotten. When all construction work is

completed next year, Wesley Village’s second-

floor Anderson lounge will be named after

Jeff and his wife Jo Ann.

“I’m comfortable, too, knowing Mom is taken

care of”

We didn’tneed to

look anywhere

else.
