FISITA is the international network for automotive engineers, representing almost 200,000 engineers in 37 countries. FISITA is a leading advocate for the education of young engineers, creating pathways for future talents through its established links with the automotive industry.

Established in 1948, FISITA provides a global platform for knowledge exchange between industry and academia. FISITA helps guide the future direction of the automotive engineering profession by contributing to the development of safe, sustainable and affordable mobility solutions.

Paul Mascarenas OBEPresident 2014–2016

Chris MasonChief Executive

Welcome to the FISITA Annual Review of 2014, which reports another year of success and exciting change for our organisation. During the year we sustained our services to members while reviewing the vision and objectives of the business in order to set our sights on the aspiration of the new President and Chief Executive who both joined the organisation in the Summer.

In 2015 we begin to deliver our vision for the future through harnessing the unique international position FISITA occupies within the automotive landscape in support of the education of young engineers. In doing so we will position FISITA as the leading advocate of automotive engineering as a career pathway of choice for people of all ages around the world.

This process begins with a refocused communications strategy that will visibly support the work of the FISITA Education Committee and Travel Bursary programme. This will lead to student engineers gaining work experience and placements within FISITA member companies through a coordinated initiative that will benefit our member societies and Honorary Committee members, continuing the process of sustaining meaningful relationships through beneficial activities with our members and stakeholders.

Ensuring FISITA continues to thrive as a modern and versatile business allows the head office team to deliver enhanced services to our members, for the benefit of the automotive industry as a whole, providing a platform for global knowledge exchange and facilitating cooperation and support amongst our membership.

In demonstrating this point, we are delighted that all of the FISITA international events saw continued growth in 2014.

The FISITA World Automotive Congress, organised in partnership with the Royal Dutch Society of Engineers (KIVI), welcomed over 1,100 delegates to Maastricht, The Netherlands for a high quality event that featured an array of innovations to the FISITA Congress format.

EuroBrake cemented its position as the world’s largest braking technology conference and exhibition with over 800 delegates joining us in Lille, France, for an extensive technical programme and sold out exhibition.

In September over 100 industry leaders joined together to develop strategies for ‘Powering towards a green future’ at the exclusive FISITA World Automotive Summit in Chantilly, France.

As we progress with plans to develop FISITA we will continue to grow and improve these flagship events which demonstrate the importance and value attached to meaningful networking opportunities amongst the world’s automotive engineering community. The support of our members will ensure that FISITA’s platforms for the sharing of information and ideas remain vital dates in the automotive engineering calendar.

The 35th FISITA World Automotive Congress, organised by FISITA and the Royal Dutch Society of Engineers was held in Maastricht, The Netherlands and welcomed over 1,100 industry experts, engineers and executives from 44 countries to address ‘Intelligent transport to solve our future mobility, safety and environmental challenges’.

The comprehensive technical programme comprised 482 presentations and saw the introduction of the Executive Track. This innovative programme brought together the best presentations from each of the engineering fields explored at the Congress, and featured some of the leading figures in industry and academia.

The FISITA Student Congress ran parallel to the main congress and provided students from across the world the unique opportunity to present papers and share ideas with their peers. Students were able to join parts of the main Congress to network with senior engineers, scientists and industry professionals. Alongside student activities including the first ever Congress Careers Day and the FISITA Travelling Fellowship (see sidebar), the Islands of Excellence proved to be a

The World Automotive Summit will be hosted in London and will focus on the topic of

Personal mobility and the impact on our auto industry

Collaboration amongst different areas of the automotive industry is vital in developing solutions for the challenges of the future. The Summit Programme Committee, led by Dr.-Ing. Karl Siebertz from Ford’s Research and Advanced Engineering Department, devised an agenda of plenary and workshop sessions that encouraged the exchange of knowledge and ideas for finding positive ways forward for future mobility.

Key findings were presented at the close of the Summit, with targets being setfor how the automotive industry can work towards increased mobility with decreased emissions.

The Opening Plenary of EuroBrake 2014 asked which driving forces would determine future developments and a lively Strategy Panel discussed what lies ahead for friction brakes. Developing solutions for future challenges is a key focus at EuroBrake, with industry and academia joining together to explore concepts.

Continuing this trend, EuroBrake 2015 will see a new approach to the Strategy Panel. Entitled ‘Facing the Challenges Together – Industry and Academia’ the panel members will set goals for the year ahead which encourage collaborative research and development opportunities. These will then be reported and analysed at the following year’s EuroBrake, allowing delegates to see the evolution of a working framework to determine the future of braking.
