Becca Elsamiller and Diane Cornick have done a lot of outstanding work within youth

committee and has been hands on with the Snak Shak by helping with Omelet Breakfast, and

volunteering to help out when needed. We will miss your hard work and dedication on Youth

Committee, and hope to see you in future 4-H events.

Alumni Award (also pictured above) She was a nine year member of the Bennington Boosters 4-H Club in Black Hawk County. She carried

many projects including Horse and Pony, Sheep, Visual Arts, Home Improvement, Horticulture,

Leadership and Citizenship. One of her club’s service projects was to restore a one room country school

in Bennington Township. The club worked on this project for six years, receiving many grants and

publicity. Becca was a spokesperson for this project, and appeared in the IPBS video about Iowa country

schools. Bennington School #4 located south of Denver was restored and has been placed on the

National Registry of Historical Places.

Becca served as president on the Black Hawk County 4-H Council from 1999- 2000, and served on the

Northeast Iowa Area 4-H Council for 2 years. She was a counselor at the Area 4-H camp for 2 years. She

attended the State 4-H Conference three years, and was a delegate for the Animal Science Round-up in

Horse and Pony in 1998.She served on State 4-H Council from 1999-2000, and was a trip winner to the

National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Georgia in 1999.

Becca worked as a summer 4-H Aide in Black Hawk County for two years, working in the Extension office,

and presenting 4-H Day Camps in Black Hawk, Grundy, Floyd, Chickasaw and Bremer counties.

She has spent many days at the 4-H Building during State Fair, helping as a State 4-H Council member

setting up displays, working with 4-Hers with their working exhibits, and as a greeter.

She attended Iowa State University and graduated with a degree in Special Education. While attending

ISU, she worked for the State 4-H Department and managed the 4-H store during the State Fair. In

2001, Becca was chosen as the Black Hawk County queen.

In the last two years, Becca has served on the Bremer County Youth Committee and has helped with the

Omelet Breakfast, the Award Banquet, and the Bremer County Fair. This past year she was the

coordinator for the Snack Shack.

Becca and her husband Jon Elsamiller reside in Waverly with their 5 children. She is a special education

teacher at South East Elementary School in Waverly.

First Level Junior Record Keeping Recognition 1. New knowledge, attitudes, and skills learned in the project area and evidence of personal growth. 2. Demonstration of leadership roles in the project area. 3. Participation in citizenship and community service in the project area. 4. Supporting evidence showing logical goals for the member's maturity, evidence of evaluation of goals and accomplishments, and an understanding of the member's individual strengths and weaknesses. 4-H’ers for 4-H Recognition Each year the State 4-H Council, in cooperation with the Iowa 4-H Foundation and county staff, conduct the Iowa 4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign.

Local 4-H clubs are asked to contribute $2.50 per member to support 4-H events and

program activities such as state camps, conferences, scholarships, etc as identified by the State 4-H Council. This year’s campaign also will support state and area 4-H Youth Councils. Super Stars Do-R-Best Townline Dayton Dodgers

Herdsmanship Awards Each year herdsmanship winners are selected at the Bremer County Fair by a judge who looks for cleanliness of stalls, animals, and the overall conduct of the 4-H’ers. This year our herdsmanship judge create a points system and had the results put up on a poster so the clubs could see how they did throughout the week. Would youth from each of the following clubs please come forward to accept their certificate. Wilma Beam Communications Award

Our 2013 Intermediate Award winner has kept records in Communication for 3 years and

has strong communication skills!

This member has been very active in Communication area by giving presentations to

Clover Kids about food and where it comes from, by participating in Communication Day (playing

piano solos and doing workshops), gave educational presentations to her club and at community

events, and used these skills to teach those who younger than her.

Our recipient this year is very active within her club and community and has shown strong

communication characteristics in her presentations and work within in the community. She is a

great example of a strong communication candidate.

Myrtle Lesitikow Award The Myrtle Lestikow Award is in honor of Myrtle Leistikow and focuses on the importance of Family Consumer Science subjects in today’s community. Myrtle was a longtime leader and always showed the youth of the FCS arts. In order to be eligible for the Myrtle Leistikow Award, individuals must be enrolled in at least one Family Consumer Sciences project for two years and show knowledge of FCS and its importance to the communities. These individuals have gone above and beyond in participating in FCS projects and have shown how they connect not only with 4-H, but their communities. These individuals can be seen practicing skills they learned and sharing with others such as in Cooking Club, or practicing Child Development skills at school by deliver presentations and lesson plans for peers. The 2013 Intermediate Myrtle Lestikow Award winner is Jenna Steffen.

Leader/volunteer Service Awards We would like to recognize all Bremer County 4-H

leaders who are here today for the time and energy they give to help our 4-H program in Bremer

County to grow and improve. We thank each 4-H leader for their tolerance and patience, for their

unselfishness in sharing their lives with others, and for the success in making a difference in the

lives of Bremer County 4-Hers. It is your time, talent, and dedication that makes the club and

helps each member grow.

Every 5 years these leaders are recognized for their contributions. The Iowa Farm Bureau Federation provides special pins for the leaders, and Iowa State University Extension provides a certificate in recognition of the important contribution they make in the lives of young people of their community through their leadership in 4-H activities. Huck Family Intermediate and Senior Citizenship and Leadership Project Awards

The Huck Citizenship and Leadership awards are presented to the Intermediates and Seniors that have done their best to be good citizens and show strong leadership skills.

Examples of being a good citizen are: helping others, caring for others, and respecting others. Leadership is helping others to become better citizens by teaching them new skills.

The Huck Family also provides funds for 4-H members to attend the Citizenship Washington Focus Trip to Washington DC. Volunteer Awards Club members are nominated for the volunteer award who have been outstanding in their

personal volunteer life within, and outside 4-H. What the committee looks for is a member who

has done something that is not required of all 4-H’ers to do, such as: all members are required to

work in the Snak Shak, pick up garbage, help at Omelet Brunch, etc.

This year’s Junior, Intermediate and Senior recipients have gone above and beyond to

“Pledge their hands to larger service, for their club, their community, their country, and their

world”.

Our first recipient has been active in his 4-H club and has volunteered by helping with fair

set up and tear down, even when his club isn’t scheduled, helping the Food and Nutrition judge

by being a judges helper, helping in the poultry tent when given a task and always has a kind

word and advice if anyone needs help. This person is always the one to find when stuck in a jam!

This individual is also very active in his community by helping his church do highway clean

ups, helping his family coordinate the Easter breakfast, is a coach’s helper for t-ball, and

participates in school extracurricular such as band. You can always count on him to lend a

helping hand, a positive attitude, and a fantastic smile!

We have five outstanding individuals who receive the Intermediate Volunteer Award. All five of

these individuals went above and beyond what they were asked to do, making the decision tough

for the committee! These individuals can be seen all over the county jumping into help at after

school programs, with county council events, a workshop, assisting others in their clubs, or being

positive role models to younger members. Examples of their great leaderships skills include:

putting on a workshop, volunteering at cooking club, volunteering above and beyond at the club

level, helping others out at fair, volunteering to do extra tasks, and being very involved in their

communities as volunteers.

Our Intermediate Volunteers for 2013 are Samantha Snyder, Ellie Foelske, Dayten

Wittenburg, Natalie Risse, & Jenna Steffen

Our senior winners have helped in many areas of the 4-H program and within in their

community and can always be counted on when a volunteer is needed. Our first individual can be

found helping with her club activities, assisting with fair events, being a jr. leader at Lego Club

and leading a group of builders, donating to Cedar Valley Friends of the Family and the American

Red Cross, and being very active within her school extracurricular. She can always be counted

on when a volunteer is needed and is always positive and uplifting! She is a great representative

of Bremer County 4-H!

Our second winner has been very active within county council activities, helping at the club level,

and always willing to try new things. She has been secretary for her club for three years and has

shown tremendous growth at the club level. She volunteers for the t-shirt committee, fair booth

committee, and is the first to volunteer to help. This year she volunteered to be a camp counselor

for jr. camp, helped youth have fun by singing Herman the Worm, has been dedicated to her 4-H

club by going above and beyond, and is always willing to lend a helping hand.

Our Family Volunteer Award is presented to a family that has volunteered their time at the club,

county and community level.

This year’s Family Volunteer Award recipient has gone above and beyond. When asked,

this family will whole heartily pitch in, no matter what the event! This family is very active in the 4-

H program and always has a willing attitude to try, and helping other members succeed. The

youth of this family are very goal oriented and strong members, and are always willing to pitch in!

From helping put on the Halloween party to helping come up with ideas for an after school

program, this family has the positive attitude that allows for others to have fun and enjoy being in

the Bremer County 4-H program. Always willing to try something new, this family can be counted

on when asked for a helping hand!

Senior Overall Awards - For the following Senior Overall Awards the members submit a Senior Overall Award application and go through an interview process. Citizenship Award The requirements for the Citizenship Award include enrollment in the citizenship project for 3 or more years with records to show the work done. This award is presented to members who have learned the meaning of citizenship and have demonstrated their understanding through good citizenship practices. The 2013 Overall Citizenship Award winner is Reba Kingsley Achievement Award

The Achievement Award is presented to a 4-H’er that has shown outstanding knowledge in a variety of projects, has outstanding personal growth and citizenship, and has made contributions to improve family and the community. The 2013 Achievement Award winner is Reba Kingsley

I Dare You Award - The following award is a special award for 4-H members in Bremer County. It is the “I Dare You Award” and is given by the American Youth Foundation founded by Wm. H. Danforth, also the founder and former Chairman of the board of the Ralston Purina Company. This award is to recognize members who have demonstrated leadership qualities; have personal integrity and excellent character; are leading balanced lives and making a positive difference in 4-H and their community; and hold the promise of making the world a better place to live. The award consists of a book - “I Dare You!” authored by Wm. H. Danforth and the

opportunity for a scholarship. In the book he writes of his lifelong philosophy of daring himself to

live each day to the fullest by doing four things: Stand Tall! Smile Tall! Think Tall! Live Tall!

Overall Excellence Award

This is our last award for the day and the one hardest to achieve - the Overall Excellence Award. This award is given to the youth that strives to reach their full potential and is to recognize the most outstanding 4-H’ers in Bremer County. The Award is the Overall Excellence Award. This year’s winner has been an active 4-H member for 8 years. This member received the 1st, 2nd, & 3rd level Junior Record Book Award; received project awards as in Dog, Horticulture, Clothing & Fashion, Food & Nutrition, Home Improvement, Photography, Communication, Health, Consumer Management and has received the Ed Huck Leadership Award and the Ag and Natural Resources Award. This individual has always taken a wide range of projects that have helped her to be an outstanding community member within her club and receive recognition at a state level.

This year’s award winner has been active at the club level by assisting with the clubs fundraiser (chocolate buffet), created a workshop for the library summer reading program, created posters to promote her club, assisted with clover kids, assisted with club community service projects, and has been a leader to those younger than her. She is a very well rounded individual who has a lot to offer to her community and the Bremer

County 4-H Program. It has been our privilege to see how she has grown over the years and

contributed to her community, family, and the 4-H world. The Excellence Award for 2013 goes

to: Reba Kingsley.
