CAPE VINCENT: JEWEL OF THE THOUSAND ISLANDSCape Vincent is great for fishing, hunting, camping, cruising,
water sports including scuba diving, hiking and ATV, history andsightseeing. It’s also a great place for artists so bring easels, oilsand pastels and cameras too!
If you look at the map of Lake Ontario where it flows into thegreat St. Lawrence River and Seaway, the village is right wherethe two meet. Its famous lighthouse built in 1827 stands as asentinel over the meeting.
The village in northern New York State has a strong Frenchheritage. Napoleon Bonaparte was to have settled in CapeVincent, seeking refuge after the wars in Europe. Army veteransand evacuees from France settled in the area and were majorcontributors to the growth and identity of the region. The villagecelebrates its history with a colorful French Festival held the 2ndSaturday in July. Thousands gather to witness spectacularentertainment and fireworks, music by visiting bands, browse thescores of crafters booths and displays, and watch the annualparades.
The village and region abound in old stone buildings, a markof the European settlers. In fact you can learn more about thevillage’s glorious past by visiting the Cape Vincent HistoricalMuseum, which itself occupies an elegant stone building. TheMuseum’s home served as a barracks for soldiers during the Warof 1812.
WATCHING THE BIG SHIPSShip-watching is another attraction for visitors. On most days
one can see giant lakers and ocean-going vessels making theirway into or out of the Great Lakes. And between them you’lllikely see Horne’s Ferry. Cape Vincent is an official port of entryfrom early May to mid October. The only auto/passenger ferryacross the St. Lawrence River departs from the ferry dock almosthourly. The ferry connects Cape Vincent with Wolfe Island,
Ontario, Canada. A short drive across the island connectsvisitors with another ferry to the historic city of Kingston. Visitorsshould ensure they have the correct government issued identitydocuments when planning to visit Canada or the United States. And this includes children.
Visitors can enjoy great boating on the St. Lawrence andthrough the 1000 Islands. Many boaters are completely unawarethat scores of historic wrecks of ships have their last resting placeon the bed of the St. Lawrence. Underwater diving is taught inCape Vincent and scuba divers preparing to explore the clearwaters can often be seen at the riverside park at the east end ofthe village.
A PLACE FOR ARTISTS The almost 200 year-old Tibbetts Point Lighthouse is a “must
see” for visitors and some 10,000 people each year enjoywandering the grounds, viewing distant islands and shipsthrough the telescope or browsing through items in the Visitor’sCenter, Museum and Gift Shop. The former Light Keeper’sQuarters are now the home of Hostelling International andduring summer months people from all over the world can beseen staying there.
Tibbetts Lighthouse, the stone houses in the village and themany scenic waterscapes make great subjects for artists, photographers and plain sight-seeing. Right in the center of thevillage overlooking the river is The Breakwater Gallery wherevisitors can attend classes or view the many paintings andphotographs on display. If you take a great photo, send it in tothe Cape Vincent Chamber of Commerce’s annual photocontest.
Fine eating establishments for all tastes can be found in andaround Cape Vincent. Motels, B&Bs and Cottages most withgreat scenic views are located on the St. Lawrence River and LakeOntario. Many of these units are equipped with housekeepingfacilities. Two New York State Parks are located on the river ashort distance from the village and offer spectacular sights.
A late season event is the Cape Vincent Oktoberfest. Theevent draws hundreds of visitors from far and wide to beentertained by the Bavarian Band, traditional dancers andsingers. Of course there are steins, beers and wines from localvineyards, plus bratwursts, lots of good food plus vendors.
STAYING FOR A WHILE?Cape Vincent School is on Esselstyne Street in Cape Vincent.
This elementary school is in the Thousand Islands CentralSchool District. The Thousand Islands High School is close toRoute 12E midway between Cape Vincent and Clayton. You canfind out more about schools by going towww.1000islandsschools.org.
Getting to Cape Vincent is a breeze. The highways areexcellent. If you are coming from the south on Interstate 81take exit 46 and follow the signs to “Cape Vincent.” If you havea GPS navigator the zip code for the Cape is 13618. If you arecoming from Canada over the International Bridge, take the12E exit for Clayton through to the Cape. If you are comingfrom Canada, the Kingston-Wolfe-Cape Vincent ferry drops youright in the village center.
