Worship is at the very heart of who we are and what we do as Christians. It is what begins our time together as an annual conference; it is what undergirds our business; and it is what sends us forth from this place with the strength to continue God’s work.

I believe that worship is one of the greatest paths to transformation – within our souls, within our faith communities and within our world.

So as we gather to worship, to learn, and to do the work of God, it is my prayer that God will touch our hearts and souls in our time together that we might better fulfill our purpose to “make disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.”

With you in the Work of Christ,

Bishop Deb Kiesey

The theme of our annual conference this year is a resounding prayer of yearning and hope—“gather us in”. While each of us takes the effort to respond to the invitation to come to our annual gathering, our Wesleyan heritage reminds us that God’s prevenient grace is already at work even before we gather. The Holy Spirit awakens within us our desire to gather to tell the stories of celebration of how God has moved among and through us over these past twelve months. This same Spirit stirs us to yearn for even greater vision and clarity for our shared ministries in the year ahead.

As part of our four year focus on Disciples Made in Michigan our theme centers around worship and the vital importance of gathering as a community of faith. Annual Conference is both a time to tell the fruit and experiences of the past year and to prepare to be sent forth into “all the world” once again, making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of our communities and the world.

We are looking forward to gathering on the campus of Adrian College, eager for times of worship, teaching, celebration, visioning and discernment. Our teaching time this year is focused again on equipping lay and clergy in our local churches for more dynamic and fruitful ministry. Dr. Marcia McFee is a gifted and artistic worship leader and formational teacher. She will share in three illuminating and exciting teaching sessions and has worked with our conference worship team to shape our overall experiences in worship this year.

The very nature of worship is woven into a call and response movement with God and our community of faith, the body of Christ. As such, we will be stirred by a message from Bishop Sally Dyck around our commitment to eliminate deaths from malaria across the globe. In 2012 we committed ourselves to be a part of the Imagine No Malaria initiative of our United Methodist Church. We will both celebrate our response thus far and be invited to continue that commitment into the year ahead.

As we prepare to “gather in”, I invite each and all of us to keep each other in prayer, and to be in prayer for Bishop Kiesey as she provides the spiritual and administrative leadership that will guide us through this time. As God gathers us in may we be truly transformed and renewed as the living body known as the Detroit Annual Conference.

Blessings,

Rev. Dr. Jerome (Jerry) DeVineDirector of Connectional Ministries

LEADERSWorship

The Rev. Dr. Anthony R. Hood was born and raised in the city of Detroit, Michigan. He is the eldest of two sons born to Ms. Norma J. Turner Hood and Dr. James Hood. He attended Bishop Borgess High School in Redford, Michigan and graduated in June of 1991. He went on to attend Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree with a concentration in Psychological Services. After completing his undergraduate studies, Dr. Hood enrolled at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, where he earned his Master of Divinity Degree. Dr. Hood sensed God calling him to further his education and in 2008 he enrolled at Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit, Michigan, where he earned his Doctor of Ministry Degree.

Dr. Hood was ordained an Elder in May 2004 by the Detroit Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. He has served as an Associate Pastor over Children’s and Youth Ministries at Hope United Methodist Church in Southfield, Michigan and Senior Pastor of Berea St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Highland Park, Michigan. On July 1, 2005, Dr. Hood was appointed to serve as pastor of the “Historic” Scott Memorial United Methodist Church in Detroit, Michigan.

Dr. Hood has a passion for imparting the Word of God simply and clearly. He patterns his preaching style after his grandfather, the late Rev. Jolly Turner, Sr. of Gadsden, Alabama. He is a featured speaker for revivals, workshops and conferences. He has served the Detroit Annual Conference in the following capacities: Vice Chairman for the Detroit Annual Conference Board of Global Ministries, President of the United Methodist Black Clergy Group of Michigan, Board Member of the Urban Alliance, Board member of the Detroit West District Leadership Team and as a Trustee for The United Methodist Union of Greater Detroit. Currently, Dr. Hood is serving on the Board of Ordained Ministry. He is also a proud member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.

Dr. Hood is the proud father of one daughter, Ayanna Hope Hood. He lives by the words found in Galatians 2:19-20 NIV:

“Through the law I died to the law so I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ: and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

Rev. Dr. Anthony R. Hood

Our COVENANT OFFERING at Annual Conference

Each year we receive an offering from churches and individuals to support our covenant partners – The Haiti Annual Conference and the Liberia Annual Conference.

This year, our offering will be take place during the Opening Worship Service on Thursday, May 15 at 1:30 p.m. This offering is split between ministries in Haiti and Liberia (the two covenant partners of the Detroit Conference). Funds will be used to feed children in Haiti through the Haiti Hot Lunch program and at Bishop Judith Craig Children’s Village in Liberia. Make checks payable to “Detroit Conference Treasurer” with “Feed the children” in the memo.

Additional Opportunities

Imagine NO Malaria Initiative•The Detroit and West Michigan Conferences have established a shared goal of $1.5 million ($10 for every member in Michigan) for Imagine NO Malaria, our denominational effort to eliminate deaths from malaria in sub-Sahara Africa. Hopefully, your local church has already participated or is planning to participate in this exciting, life-saving endeavor. Please download the Imagine No Malaria commitment card from the MInoMalaria website, and be ready to present It, along with any additional gifts, as a part of our Ingathering at the conclusion of the Thursday afternoon plenary time with our special guest, Bishop Sally Dyck. Make checks payable to “Detroit Conference Treasurer” with “No Malaria” in the memo.

Liberia Teacher Training Program• For a number of years, we collected supplies and funds to send containers to Liberia and Haiti. Because of the increasing cost of the containers and the wisdom of buying things locally, the Board of Global Ministries is inviting us this year to support special training workshops for school teachers in Liberia. Many teachers have little or no formal teacher training and this will expand their teaching skill set. If you wish to participate, gifts will be collected in the lobby of Dawson Auditorium following the Liberia Task Force report. Make checks payable to “Detroit Conference Treasurer” with “Liberia Teacher Training (Advance #15125B)” in the memo.

The Naming of Those We Remember…

Unison Prayer O God of both the living and the dead, we praise your holy name for all your servants who have faithfully lived and died. We thank you for the sacred ties that bind us to those unseen who encompass us as a cloud of witnesses. We pray that, encouraged by their example and strengthened by their fellowship, we may be diligent followers, bringing your reign here on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

GATHER US INUnder God’s WingsFriday Morning, May 16, 2014, 8:00am

Jesus, like a mother you gather your people to you; you are gentle with us as a mother with her children. Often you weep over our sins and our pride, tenderly you draw us from hatred and judgment.

Gather your little ones to you, O God, as a hen gathers her brood to protect them.

You comfort us in sorrow and bind up our wounds, in sickness you nurse us, and with pure milk you feed us. Jesus, by your dying we are born to new life; by your anguish and labor we come forth in joy.

Gather your little ones to you, O God, as a hen gathers her brood to protect them.

Despair turns to hope through your sweet goodness; through your gentleness we find comfort in fear. Your warmth gives life to the dead, your touch makes sinners righteous.

Gather your little ones to you, O God, as a hen gathers her brood to protect them.

Lord Jesus, in your mercy heal us; in your love and tenderness remake us.In your compassion bring grace and forgiveness, for the beauty of heaven may your love prepare us.

Glory to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, God, the Parent of us all.As it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen.

Blessing and Prayer

Bishop: Let us affirm our unity in diversity!

All: Together we are a reflection of the United Methodist Church and its ministry to the world.

Bishop: Let us pray:

All: To You who loves the whole of Your creation, who knows us and names us and gives us each a song to sing: Renew in us your peace and your passion for life and for your work. Help us to affirm each person here with the name, “Servant of God.” Bind us together as one body so that Your image might be restored in us. In the name of the Lover who gifts us, calls us, names us, and makes us to sing, Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
