DESCRIPTION

Dutch designer Dirk Vander Kooij is a true craftsman, although most of the things he produces are actually not made by hand. He is a new kind of craftsman, one who embraces technology and machines, but not in the same way that industrial producers embraced their manufacturing lines. We are not interested in standardization or the mass production of identical items. Instead, we are interested in finding ways to create the industrial-quality products we like AND selling them without having a rigid production system, upfront investments in tools and long production chains full of middlemen standing in the way. In short, we want to design, create, improve, and create again...

The 3D printer creates thick molten lines of recycled synthetic material. As if the robot is squeezing out a tube of paint. The result is a brightly colored solid chair.

However, this chair is not built up in flat layers as in traditional 3D printing, but the line can now be curved in any direction to form the legs and seat. The moldable looking Chubby has a soft, toothpaste like appearance but it is in fact as tough as oak wood.

Together the thin layers of molten synthetic create a material that looks more like a coarse-textured fabric and after it’s been polished it even resembles silk.

The pod shape comes into being because the robot writes out circles from the top and while doing so it repeatedly shifts or rescales.

Next, robot and man work in unison polishing the pod until the surface feels silky soft.

Page 9: 2014 Dirk Vander Kooij Catalogue

The first chair that was made with the home built robot. This robot appeared to have a fluctuating motor that caused lumpy lines.

Pleasantly surprised by the esthetic quality of this ‘irregularity’, the ‘pulse’ was deliberately programmed into the new robot. Thus the minimal and constructive form of the chair becomes even rougher.

10 Fresnel Pending Lamp

Page 11: 2014 Dirk Vander Kooij Catalogue

It looks like a brilliant gold colored celestial body, but it’s a lamp made out of recycled synthetics and polished metal.

The shape is derived from the Fresnel lens - a special lens that concentrates light into a relatively narrow beam which is used in for instance lighthouses, searchlights and navigation lights. The shape causes the light out of the 360 led lights to be sent up and down.

The layered structure diffuses the warm light so it’s not un-pleasant to look into the lamp. Furthermore, the lamp is hung up on a cup-and-ball joint so one can aim it accurately.

A comfortable pod seat available in every possible color on a simple rocking chair construction. That’s the Flow Rocking Chair.

Rocking at the table offers more freedom: bending over for-wards to pick up something from the floor and bending over backwards while lingering at the table are done with the greatest ease.

Unpretentious requirements or specifications for a design often produce the most awkward and appealing results without the ornament having to end up as no more than a decoration.

So happened with the Soap Cabinet, that derived its name from the striking froth like structure. The cabinet looks soft like a feathery eiderdown, but it’s precisely the ornament that pro-vides the cupboard with the necessary strength.

Sheets of recycled synthetics are baked for this incomparable table. When it melts, the table top expands, and as it gradu-ally cools down the material shrinks.

A slightly wrinkled structure emerges that doesn’t look like a synthetic any longer but more like slate or the pleated skin of an elephant.

But even so, the table top - with elegant legs and a polished metal frame - has a surprisingly silky soft touch.

The 120 stacked straight lines form the table top. The result is a gorgeous interplay of lines that becomes more powerful after the top has been planed and polished.

The four prominent legs that gradually bend towards one another and join up in the middle make an exceedingly strong construction.

The complete line pattern is made out of a 621 meter long line of recycled synthetic.

We’ve managed to get so much control over the engineer-ing, that this chair can be curve printed in one single piece. The chair is stackable, light weighted and comfortable.

The shape is the most elementary form one can imagine for a chair, but still this specimen stands out on its own thanks to the used material and the smooth, elegant curves.

The table construction is built up out of extremely thick lines of recycled synthetic. Together the layers form solid beams that provide the legs with enormous stability and strength.

Marked detail: the lines around the table top form a bumper, like a bumper car. It protects the rubber surface made of du-rable and natural rubber.

Page 33: 2014 Dirk Vander Kooij Catalogue

The lamp looks like solid glass but it’s actually made of crystal clear synthetic material.

The robot constructs a line structure layer by layer that re-fracts and scatters the light. The lamp works like a machine, accurately supplying the desired light.

Four printed transparent units fuse together providing a space for the electronics without hiding them. There are three cir-cular light sources that can be varied in warmth and intensity. There’s a knob for cold and warm light, just like a mixing tap. Cold light for an active work environment, warm light for re-laxing.

Page 35: 2014 Dirk Vander Kooij Catalogue

Chubby Coat HangerEvery time a color has to be changed, little bits of recycled plastic must be used to flush the robot. A lucky strike: with each color change, the left over material is used to make four coat hangers. So each coat hanger either gets one unique col-or or an unusual gradual color mix.

Chubby Coat RackElements of recycled synthetics hold three wooden sticks to-gether: the top two make a shelf for bags or hats, the low-er one is the hallstand for coats. Besides the four standard lengths the modular system is available in any other length. More length simply requires more wall elements.

Melting Pot Table

Perpetuating transience: enormous amounts of used plastic are used to make an indestructible fat table. Thus molten dis-posable plastic gets the sturdiness and strength of marble.

Remains of recycled synthetic material is unique and actual-ly too appealing to be called waste. That’s why collected left over materials, each and every one with its own history, color and pattern, goes into a melting pot. Just like a chef would prepare a meal, we prepare the Melting Pot Tables.

The result: a bold and stylish table with magnificent patterns and colors, and not one is the same. The conical hole in the table top fits perfectly onto the cone shaped foot. A strong connection without any additives.
