• Ericsson a technology and communications services provider, predicts that there will be 930 million mobile subscriptions in sub saharan Africa by end of 2019, with 557 million smartphones and 710 million broadband subscriptions

• This fast technological revolution spurred by a rise in social media, content rich apps and video content, would see the number of users skyrocket to 9.2 billion, with 82.3% of the populace on mobile broadband

• Mobile phone usage has spread more rapidly in Africa than on any other continent recently - at an average 18 percent a year in the last five years.

• Students use text messages to take quizzes, view mini-lessons and get extra help.

• Their data is being logged for viewing by parents and teachers, and schools (country-wide data – rank).

• 30 cents a month, unlimited access to its content, which conforms to Kenya’s standard curriculum.

• Students choose topics by class and unit. Then respond to questions sent via text message, and get tailored responses depending on their answers.

• If students score less than 50 percent on a quiz, they receive a “mini lesson” that reviews the topic.

• A global movement that uses mobile technologies to improve the health and lives of mothers in developing nations.

• Mobile technologies are providing women with access to life-saving maternal health information.

• MAMA Voice sends pre-recorded messages in the same languages as the text messages for users who face literacy challenges.

• MAMA MXit takes advantage of the 10 million-plus users on MXit, a social networking site, and has established an educational portal for South African men and women between the ages of 18 to 25 years old with important information about pregnancy, childbirth and parenting.

• Women are charged one rand (about 10 cents) to sign up for the MAMA services.

• Mobile tool in Kenya made to assist smallholder farmers in managing their production

• Supports farmers using the most basic phones with critical knowledge to increase their rates of production and subsequent incomes while learning the value of local biodiversity and conservation farming.

• Smart phone android application

• “Toolkit” sends information to farmer’s phones like “Farming 101″ that teaches farmers water management techniques (including 7 kinds of drip irrigation and rainwater harvesting techniques), business tutorials and a ”’whiteboard” where farmers can connect with one another and markets.

• After selecting a crop, farmers receive an average of 36 messages a season (45 for more technical crops) that help guide them through 8 stages from planning to harvest.
