DR. WILLIAM PERRYEASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

William L. Perry began serving Eastern Illinois University as president on July 1, 2007, following 36 years of service to higher education in Texas. Perry, who was born and raised in the Midwest, received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. In his subsequent career at Texas A&M University, he proceeded through the tenured faculty ranks in mathematics, and then served in increasingly responsible administrative roles involving multiple areas of budget, personnel and planning for the university, academic affairs and facilities. While at Texas A&M, he received recognition for his service in teaching and in administration.

As an undergraduate, Perry attended Park College in Parkville, Missouri, where he majored in mathematics and history, and played basketball. In 1999, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Park. Perry serves on the Charleston Area Chamber of Commerce Board, Coles Together Board of Directors, and the Board of Directors of Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. Bill and his wife, Linda, reside in Charleston.

TOM MICHAELEASTERN ILLINOIS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Tom Michael was formally introduced as the 10th full-time athletic director in Eastern Illinois University history on July 22, 2014 and began his role on August 11. He comes to EIU after serving as the Senior Associate Athletic Director at the University of Illinois "Tom Michael's experience, integrity, and commitment to the academic development of student-athletes are excellent," stated EIU President William Perry. " I am very pleased he is joining the EIU family." "We are excited to begin the next chapter in Eastern Illinois Panther Athletics with Tom Michael as our new athletic director," said Dan Nadler, EIU Vice President for Student Affairs. Over the course of the phone and on-campus interviews you

could see that Tom is someone that will be totally committed to the academic and athletic development of EIU's student-athletes." Michael has worked as the Senior Associate Athletic Director at Illinois since 2012. He is currently overseeing the renovations to the State Farm Center. Michael joined the Illinois athletic department in 1996 as an academic counselor. He has worked for the past 12 years in administration serving as both an associate athletic director and assistant athletic director for student services. In addition to his current role in the State Farm Center renovation Michael oversees Academic Services, Equipment, Event Management, Sports Medicine and Strength and Conditioning for the athletic department. "I am thrilled to be named the Director of Athletics at Eastern Illinois University. It is with great anticipation that I look forward to working with the coaches, staff and student-athletes involved with EIU Panther Athletics," said Michael. I feel the 18 years of employment and four years as a student-athlete at the University of Illinois, have prepared me for this opportunity. I leave Illinois with a tremendous amount of respect for the training and experiences it has provided for me both as a Division I student-athlete and as a Division I athletic administrator." Michael received both his bachelor's degree (1993) and master's degree (1994) from Illinois. He played four years for the Fighting Illini basketball program from 1991-94 helping the team make two trips to the NCAA Tournament. He was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten Selection and holds the Illinois single season record for 3-point field goal percentage. Following his playing days Michael worked in his family's business prior to joining the staff at Illinois in 1996. He and his wife Shana have three children (Nicholas, Nathaniel and Kylie).

TWO PLAYERS EARN ALL-OVC HONORS, CHERRY NAMED COACH OF THE YEAREastern Illinois women’s soccer players Meagan Radloff and Lauren Hoppensteadt were named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference Teams at the annual awards banquet on the eve of the conference tournament.

First-year head coach Jason Cherry was also named Co-OVC Coach of the Year, sharing the award with Morehead State’s Warren Lipka. Radloff was named to the All-OVC First Team, becoming the first Panther to earn first team honors since 2010. She has earned all-conference honors twice as she was also named to the All-Newcomer Team in 2011. The West Chicago, Ill., native finished the year ranked tied for fourth in the conference in goals with seven – three of which were game-winning goals. The midfielder concluded her junior season with eight career goals and three career assists. Hoppensteadt was named to the All-OVC Second Team, earning all-conference honors for the first time in her career. The junior started the season playing in the midfield and moved to the defensive back line midway through the year due to injuries on the EIU roster. She earned OVC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 8 in her first week playing on defense.

The Oswego, Ill., native had one goal and one assist on the year while helping the Panthers post three shutouts during OVC play.

Cherry was only the fourth coach in conference history to earn coach of the year honors in his first season as head coach. The South Bend, Ind., native took the Panthers to the OVC Tournament in 2013 after being absent from the tournament a year ago for the first time in school history. Cherry captured six conference wins during the season, tying the school record for single-season conference victories. He also led the Panthers to a 4-0 start in OVC action, the school’s best start since the 2000 season.

PANTHERS EARN TEAM ACADEMIC AWARDThe Panther soccer teams were recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for their accomplishments in the classroom as both squads earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award. A total of 863 soccer teams (270 men, 593 women) posted a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher to earn the award for the 2012-13 academic school year. Of that total, 186 schools had both their men’s and women’s programs recognized that included Eastern Illinois.

The women’s soccer team posted a 3.49 grade point average while the men’s team had a 3.25 grade point average.

u Jason Cherry (c) was named OVC Coach of the Year in his first season as the EIU head coach.

1999 • Record: 11-9OVC Regular Season and Tournament Champions

In only their second year in the OVC, the Panthers posted an undefeated 5-0 record in conference action to capture their first regular-season title. EIU would eventually go on to win their first tournament title as well.

Two players in Ida Hakansson and Cara LeMaster would end up earning individual accolades at the conclusion of the season. Hakansson was named ‘Player of the Year’ while LeMaster was tabbed the ‘Freshman of the Year’.

2000 • Record: 15-4-1OVC Regular Season Champions

In 2000, the Panthers again would post a 5-0 record in OVC play to capture the regular-season title for the second consecutive year. The 15 wins is the second most in single-season history behind the 1996 squad that won 16 matches.

After defeating Morehead State 3-1 in the first match of the conference tournament, the Panthers were upset in the tournament finale by Tennessee Tech, 1-0, in an overtime thriller.

Beth Liesen was named the conference’s ‘Freshman of the Year’ after leading the Panthers in scoring with 33 points. She posted 15 goals, the fifth most in single-season history, to go along with three assists.

Devon Bissel was named ‘OVC Player of the Year’ after recording 10 assists and three goals. Bissel’s 10 assists are tied for the sixth most in EIU single-season history. In addition to the player awards, head coach Steve Ballard was named the ‘OVC Coach of the Year’ for the first time in his coaching career.

2001 • Record: 14-6OVC Tournament Champions

The 2001 campaign marked the beginning of four consecutive OVC Tournament Championships for the Panthers.

Beth Liesen and Devon Bissell continued to lead a high-powered offense in 2001, combining to score 59 of the team’s 128 points. Liesen scored 18 goals and added five assists while Bissell recorded an EIU single-season record 16 assists. Liesen also set a conference single-season record with nine game-winning goals.

The Panthers advanced to their first NCAA Tournament, facing Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., on Nov. 16. The Fighting Irish handed the Panthers a 2-0 loss.

2002 • Record: 12-8-2OVC Tournament Champions

In 2002, the Panthers won their second consecutive OVC Tournament Title. Southeast Missouri State won the regular-season title in 2001 and 2002, but lost to the Panthers both years in the conference tournament finale.

Beth Liesen again paced the Panthers in scoring with 26 points (nine goals, eight assists).

EIU faced another team from Indiana in the NCAA Tournament, facing Purdue in South Bend, Ind., on Nov. 5. Arguably the closest game in posteason history for EIU, the Panthers took the Boilermakers to double overtime only to loss the match, 3-1, on penalty kicks.

2003 • Record: 11-6-5OVC Tournament Champions

As far as records are concerned, the 2003 season was one of the most successful in OVC history.

As a team, the Panthers set three single-season records highlighted by the squad scoring 50 goals - the most in OVC history.

Individually, Beth Liesen set seven single-season OVC records on her way to capturing ‘Player of the Year’ honors. She scored 49 points, including 20 goals.

Conference newcomer Samford won the regular-season title, but the Panthers would win their third tournament title in a row. In the NCAA Tournament, EIU dropped a 1-0 contest to Missouri in Columbia, Mo., on Nov. 14.

2004 • Record: 13-6-2OVC Tournament Champions

The 2004 squad captured an unprecedented fourth consecutive OVC Tournament title.

Despite the graduation of arguably the best player in conference history in Beth Liesen, the Panthers simply reloaded. Michelle Steinhaus led the Panthers in scoring with 26 points (10 goals, six assists) while being named the ‘OVC Freshman of the Year’.

For the third time in four years, the Panthers were sent to South Bend, Ind., in the NCAA Tournament where they would face Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish defeated the Panthers, 4-0, on Nov. 12.
