From the point of view of vocabulary the English language is very difficult. Everybody who learns English faces to such phenomenon as polysemy when a word has more than one meaning.

Variants of translation of some English words can be not only very different, but even opposite. Sometimes it is possible to understand a word meaning only by its place in the sentence or in the context. The problem is how to remember polysemantic words in English.

Problem

The tasks of the project:1. To study the phenomenon of polysemy by the

example of the English verb to go.2. To systematize the received results of the

research.3. To present the received information visually in

the form of the booklet.

The aim of the project:to study the phenomenon of polysemy in the English language and to find out the difficulties connected with it.

Collecting information about the verb to go from different sources.

Systematization of the received results.

Creation of a visual aid in the form of a booklet.

The basic directions of the project:

Vocabulary of the English language is polysemantic. It turns out that one word can call many subjects, the phenomena, etc. Remember bilingual English-Russian and Russian-English dictionaries. Have you ever been surprised that one word can have so many meanings that one entry can be on some pages?

English verbs are the most polysemantic because of their usage with prepositions and adverbs. For example, the word run has 645 meanings, and the word put has twice less.

For my research I decided to choose the most commonly used verb to go. There are so many expressions in which this verb is used: phrasal verbs, idioms, phrases with dependent prepositions, etc.

First of all I tried to collect as much information as possible using different sources (dictionaries, study aids, Internet recourses).

Collecting information

Having read different sources, I have found that the verb to go has a great number of meanings ( about 50), that’s why I have chosen only the most commonly used meanings, phrasal verbs, idioms, phrases with dependent prepositions which are used with the verb to go.

Systematization of the received results.

Then I have systematized all the received information in such a way that it was easy to be remembered. In the first group I pointed out the meanings of the verb to go, the second group is a phrasal verb to go. There are some interesting idioms in the third group and in the last group some phrases with dependent prepositions are presented.

Creation of a visual aid in the form of a booklet.

But I faced to the problem how to present the results. I would like to make a booklet which will be used as a visual aid by students and will help them to learn this polysemantic verb.

For those who has good visual memory it is easier to learn new words visually using pictures. For others it is better to write a word two hundred times to remember it. It is simpler for someone to hear a new word several times.

But I think that learning new words should be in a context. Let it will be phrases or even the whole sentences explaining this or that meaning of the polysemantic word.

According to it I tried to present the verb to go in a context using visual means. I hope it will be easier to remember the verb to go with the help of this booklet.

Read and learn.A lawyer never goes to law himself.Умный в суд не ходит. Из суда — что из пруда: сух не выйдешь.

Better go to bed supperless than rise in debt.Ешь хоть репу вместо ржи, а чужого не держи.

Easy come, easy go.Легко добыто — легко и прожито. Пришло махом — ушло прахом. Что без труда наживается, легко проживается.

Go to bed with the lamb and rise with the lark.Ложись с курами, а вставай с петухом.

The camel going to seek horns lost his ears.За чужим погонишься — свое потеряешь. Искав чужое, свое потерял.

Guess the riddles. What goes up when the

rain comes down?

What goes up and down the stairs without moving?

What goes around the world but stays in a corner?

Thanks for attention!

I have done the hard work on researching the phenomenon of polysemy in English by the example of the verb to go. I would like to give you these booklets and I hope you will use them in your English practice.
