By Brian Meeter Growing up in Eastern Iowa, in the metro hub of Cedar Fall/Waterloo, I played a lot of sports. I tried my hand in soccer, baseball, basketball, football, tennis, racquetball, volleyball, Cub-scout softball, and a few other non-organized sports. Golf for me started on a par-30 course that catered to kids during the day, and adults leagues and tournaments in the evening and weekends. Washington Park Golf Course is Cedar Falls is no longer in existence, the Cedar River washed it out too often, but it was a great place to learn the game. I think it was designed to keep all the kids off the big course, which was good and bad. It was bad because if you were a kid growing up in Cedar Falls, you weren’t welcomed on the full size course. It was good because we had our own place to go. We basically owned the place during the day. My dad worked right next to the course and would bring my clubs with him to work. I would ride my bike to the course in the morning, grab my clubs out of the car, and play all day, sometimes 36 holes, which made for a long 3 mile ride home when I was finished.

I didn’t get serious in golf until I got a little older. The city of Waterloo had 3 public courses, and several private ones. The public courses offered a $10 annual membership for kids 18 and under. We had to pass a golf etiquette course, and then we were free to tee off before noon Monday through Friday, and play as much as we wanted. Stingy rangers made sure pace of play was monitored, and we respected the course as we were taught. As soon as we got our driving license, we hit the course hard, and fell in love with the game. I don’t think I played at the Cedar Falls course my entire high school career, it was just too expensive and they catered to adults. It was hard getting a t-time in the Waterloo youth golf program, because most kids could afford to play, something that I think is amiss today. In the coulee region there are some very talented youth golfers, just look at how some of our local teams and individuals have placed at state in the past few years. Yet, I find it very easy to get a tee time at most hours of the day during the week. I think there are several reasons you don’t see as many youth golfers as I did when I was growing up. First, a lot of families now have both parents working. That means kids may be with a sitter or nanny during the summer. This makes it hard to shuttle kids around, especially if the sitter doesn’t have a license. Secondly, competition from other sports has diluted the golf scene. There are so many sports available during the summer, that kids might just not put golf at the top of their list. Third, it’s expensive. There are so many financial factors that may prohibit a family from investing in golf. Lastly, not all courses cater to youth golfers, and because the courses in the area are so spread out, it may be difficult for kids to get to the

Need for youth golf

courses that do offer youth programs. First Tee has had great success in large metro areas growing the game at the youth level. “At the completion of the four-year study, more than half (57%) of those youth no longer in The First Tee still play golf and more than half (55%) participate in a variety of other sports” (First Tee Impact Report, 2008). Some locally are doing their part to grow youth golf, such as Bill Pearse at Trempealeau Mountain and Keith Stoll at Forest Hills, and others. New youth middle school programs have recently been added as well. The Coulee Region is going in the right direction with youth golf, and that’s a good thing, but more can been done to ensure our golf courses will be here for the long term. Today, I still play, as do the 4-some of golfers I played with that made those courses in Iowa our home during the summers of 1989-1992. We have a financial impact on the golf course we play now, and around the region. We help to ensure that the golf courses remain open, that others may have the chance to walk the same fairways that we do. Next time you take a day off and tee it up in the morning, look around to see if there are any kids playing. If not, don’t’ be surprised if the beautiful course you are playing are a housing development in 10 years. Kids are the future to golf. Youth golfers become adult golfers and will be the financial future of our area courses. If youth golf continues to grow, and we make room for them on the course, then golf in the Coulee Region is in goods hands.

Brian is an avid golfer, promoter of youth golf, and the Marketing Director for Wisconsin Sports Services.

Have you played St. Andrews?

By M. Scott Ott Having been asked this question countless times, the answer is YES, but I have never played the Old Course! Recognized as the birthplace of golf, St. Andrews, Scotland is home to the Old Course where golf was first played in the early 1400s. But playing St. Andrews is much more. The Old Course is one of seven courses held in trust by The St. Andrews Links Trust under an act of Parliament. The others are in order of difficulty: (author’s opinion) The Castle, The New, The Jubilee, The Eden, The Strathtyrum, and Balgove. The Old Course would take its place in line of difficulty after the New Course. All the courses are links courses, meaning near the coast with few water hazards and trees. The undulating sandy soil typically is unsuitable for farming yet supports firm turf and grasses, allowing the land to be used for golf play. All seven courses are open to the public. Eight local golf clubs share playing privileges: St. Regulus, St. Rule, and the Ladies’ Putting Club of St. Andrews are female members only. The St. Andrews Golf Club (author’s home club), The New, The Thistle, The 19th hole, and The Royal and Ancient Golf Club are male members only. It is relatively easy to get on most of the courses, golfers may phone and book a tee time, The Balgove course require that you walk up and request play. The Old Course is unique as its high demand requires more complicated methods to secure play. • Beginning the previous November golfers (4) may apply in writing for a tee time for the following April to October – a minimum two course policy applies, Monday to Friday only. • Golfers who have been unable to secure a tee time by application may enter the daily ballot. It is drawn 48 hours in advance and golfers may enter by phone or in person. • Golfers who have been unsuccessful in the daily ballot may go to the starter early in the morning of the day they wish to play and hope to be placed in an available spot St. Andrews is a living museum where interaction with its history is highly encouraged. The Old Course, unmatched in tradition and is closed on Sunday so the community may enjoy a walk on the course and visitors may pose and snap photos. One would be advised not to try this at Augusta or Pebble Beach. Each summer USJT Golf Travel conducts its Birthplace of Golf Programs in St. Andrews. Separate programs for junior golfers and adults include three days of unlimited play on six of The St. Andrews Links Trust Courses as well as one round at a local private club. The junior program also includes open competitions at local golf clubs when available. USJT Golf Travel plans unique and exciting golf holidays for golfers of all ages and abilities. Our only business is golf travel, and USJT has summer programs to Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run in Kohler, WI; spring golf to the Biltmore Golf Club and Wigwam Golf Club in Phoenix, AZ; spring golf to The Grand Palms Hotel and Golf Resort in Pembroke Pines, FL; and spring and fall golf and winery tours to Napa, CA. Adjusting golf swing gets easier

Golfers rejoice! Those dreaded slices or hooks could become a thing of the distant past thanks to adjustable clubs and drivers. In addition to helping improve accuracy, adjustable clubs also lighten the load in your golf bag. With a few twists of a wrench or even turning the shaft of the driver itself, golfers can adjust the face angle, loft and lie angle of the driver to hit the ball farther and straighter. Golfers can make small adjustments to create the right loft and improve distance without having to purchase a new club or visit a club fitter. Many club manufacturers now offer adjustable drivers and other clubs. According to an informal poll on Golf.com, 34 percent of the 2,337 respondents owned an adjustable driver by the end of 2011. The ability to upgrade shafts has also become popular as golfers respond to what the pros are doing. Adjustable golf clubs enable golfers to walk out onto the course with one driver and a few different shafts. With a couple of clicks from a wrench, a person can have an entirely new driver. That cuts down on the equipment that needs to be carried and can fine tune a golfer’s accuracy.

These high-tech clubs are corresponding to changes being made to golf balls. Engineers have reduced the spin on golf balls to help the balls travel farther. To do so, golf experts advise that the ball needs to be hit higher into the air. Adjustable drivers can give players the edge they need to produce the right height and trajectory. According to data from golf club manufacturer TaylorMade, 70 percent of consumers who use the company’s adjustable drivers adjust their club at least once to get the desired shot. Afterward, 10 to 15 percent of adjustable driver users report further adjustments as they become comfortable with the features. Although golfers can now put adjustments into their own hands, it is still adviseable to get a professional fitting regardless of which clubs are chosen. A certified club fitter can help a person sort through the myriad options available and make recommendations based on various factors, including the golf ball used. Those who are not fans of adjustable drivers say that the adjustment mechanisms add weight to the drivers, which can compromise efficiency. However, that isn’t stopping larger numbers of golf fans from taking adjustable drivers for a trial run in an effort to improve their game.

Adjustable golf clubs enable players to fine tune their swings for more precision.

As I Tee ItPace of PlayBy: O. Tee Tee

The dreaded phone call: My boss phoned me today. He said, “Is everything OK at the office?” I said, “It is all under control. I haven’t stopped to take a break all day.”“Can you do me a favor?” he asked.I said “Of course, what is it?”“Pick up the pace a little. I’m in the foursome behind you.” Little is more frustrating that a slow group of golfers playing if in front of your group. Even more frustrating is that they think they are not playing slowly. A good pace of play is an important element in having a good experience at the golf course, it’s often a combination of little things not done that wind up contributing to slow play and on-course

traffic jams. Remember: pace of play isn’t about rushing your shots; it’s about being ready to play your stroke when it’s your turn, and behaving efficiently on the course. • Choose a set of tees appropriate to your skill level. Playing from the championship set of tees when you’re not really good enough to do so only adds strokes and time. • Each member of a group should proceed directly to his/her ball. The group should not travel as a pack, going to first to one ball, then the next, and so on. • If sharing a cart, don’t drive to the first ball, wait for the first player to hit, then head to the second ball. Instead, drop the first player off at his/her ball, drive on ahead to the second ball. The first player should walk over to the cart as the second player is playing his/her shot. • On the green, begin lining up your putt and reading the break as soon as you reach the green. When it’s your turn to putt, be prepared to step right up and take the stroke.• If all else fails, try playing ready golf, meaning the order of play is based on who’s ready, not who’s away. A good pace of play not only increases enjoyment of the game, it can actually improve one’s game. Standing around on every shot allows the muscles to cool

down or limbs to stiffen up. A brisk pace can help keep a golfer loose and ready to play. Pace of play can be boiled down to two simple phrases: be prepared and be ready to play. Use the groups ahead of you and behind you to gauge your pace. If the group that teed off directly in front of you is pulling away - putting a full hole’s distance between them and your group - you need to speed up. Did you know? • The word caddy comes from the French word for student, cadet, which is pronounced cad-DAY. • The word “fore” derived from the term “fore-caddy”- a caddy waiting down range from the golfer to find where the ball lands. These caddies were often warned about oncoming golf balls by a shout of the term “fore-caddy” which was eventually shortened to just “fore!” • Not all golf balls have the same number of dimples. Golf balls have anywhere from 330 to 500 dimples depending on which company designs the ball. The ideal ball will usually have between 380 and 432 dimples. • Americans won all four 2013 British major tournaments: The Open and Scottish Open – Phil Mickelson, British Senior Open – Mark Wiebe, British Women’s Open – Stacy Lewis
