Welcome to the Curriculum Handbook for 2014
Mission Statement
Our purpose is to develop young people who strive always to be the best they can be!
Your course selection for next year could produce life-long benefits. It should be based on your
interests, abilities and work habits. It is important to get the help of the people who know you best.
In this Curriculum Handbook we aim to provide you with the information necessary to choose the
subjects you wish to study in 2013 and in future years. Please use the page “Course Planning
Pathway for Your Future” to help you plan your course.
You should choose a course that:
- you can succeed in (with a reasonable amount of effort);
- will enable you to go on to the future education or training you will need;
- you will find interesting or is a necessary step towards a future course or job you will find
interesting.
You can discuss your choices with your Teachers, Dean and Whanau. The Careers Advisor, Mrs
Putt can also offer you helpful advice. If you are unsure about your eligibility to enter a course,
talk to the contact person in charge of a course. We recommend that you take the time to plan
your whole course of study for Years 11-13 so that you know where you are going, and what you
need to get there.
All Year 11, 12 and 13 subjects offer credits towards a National Certificate of Education
Achievement (NCEA). At the time of writing, the information in this course book is accurate but
you should be aware that there may be changes planned for some standards.
Best wishes for this important set of decisions.

SUBJECT CHOICE AND CAREERS
Research shows that the two main influences on subject choice are: • What subjects your friends are taking • Who is teaching a particular subject
Neither of these should influence your subject choice. Your friends may not be in the same class as you next year even if you take the same subjects and no one yet knows who will be teaching any subject next year, so concentrate on what you need for your future.
Information about each course is found online at http://www.otakicollege.school.nz/academic/course-‐booklets

ACADEMIC PATHWAY
In 2014, each NCEA Level 1-‐2 topic (standard) in a course is colour coded based on a Vocational Pathway. Some topics may have more than one Vocational Pathway – whereas other topics may lead to only one Vocational Pathway. Also, some courses have an Academic Pathway showing meaning that it leads to a Polyetchnic or University course.
Pick your course by:
• Choose the subjects that you are good at and which you enjoy. • Check you have (or are likely to) achieved the prerequisites as indicated for each subject. • Keep your options open as you are likely to pursue several careers. • If you have a particular career in mind, check with the Careers Advisor whether it has any compulsory
subjects, and that you are choosing the most appropriate course. • Plan your course selection through to the end of your secondary schooling. Think carefully before
dropping a subject you have studied for several years. • It is not advisable to take more than two new subjects each year. • Choose subjects that offer the level of credits you need to study. With NCEA, it is appropriate to study
subjects at different year levels. • Discuss your proposed course selection with:
-‐ your family -‐ this year’s teachers -‐ the Contact teacher named in the section on course information -‐ the Careers Advisor -‐ Your current Dean and next year’s Dean
Ability + Interest + Occupation = Subject Choice
How good are you at a subject?
(Check subject prerequisites)
What do you enjoy?
If you don’t know what you want to be, keep your options open by
not specialising too soon.

NON-‐NCEA PROGRAMME ELL What will I learn? The course is aimed at English language learners in Years 11 to 13 who need language support (e.g. those with high literacy needs who are preparing for NCEA). Students will have their language needs assessed and systematic support provided to help them gain the English language skills they need for learning at their year level in all curriculum areas. Assistance will be given to help students with the language requirements in their other subjects, including adapting resources and learning materials from different curriculum areas so that these learners are better able to understand it. What Should I have already (pre-‐requisites)? No prerequisites. English departmental discretion. HOW IS THE COURSE ASSESSED? This course is not an NCEA course and will not necessarily lead to gaining any NCEA credits. Distance Learning He Ako Tawhiti
Distance learning involves students having lessons from a teacher who is not at the same school as themselves. There are two types of distance learning systems available at Ōtaki College. 1. Virtual learning – you will be enrolled in a class that has a registered teacher that you will
meet with once a week via a video conference link. The rest of the week you will be assigned activities that link to the video lesson and you will work on your own on these activities. Your teacher and the other members of your virtual learning class will be accessible via emails and an intranet site.
2. Correspondence school – you will enrol with the New Zealand correspondence school,
based in Wellington. Lessons will either be posted to you or be on-line. You will complete those lessons and send them back for marking. Again you will be able to contact your teacher via emails and an 0800 number.
Why do distance learning? There are a number of reasons why you may consider distance learning for one of your subjects. 1. The subject chosen cannot be offered by the college that year due to class numbers not being
sufficient to run a class. 2. You may have a clash on the timetable. That is, two of your chosen subjects are on at the
same time and therefore the other subject can only be done through distance learning. 3. You would like to study a subject that is not normally offered by Ōtaki College. Courses available for distance learning include: Available subjects can be found at: http://pol.uln.school.nz/search and www.tekura.school.nz.
