SVP SAN DIEGO / 2014 IMPACT REPORT SDSVP.ORG 1

We’re facing big problems in our community, and money alone is not enough to solve them. At SVP, we unleash potential by helping individuals realize greater impact with their giving, to strengthen nonprofi ts with our collective fi nancial resources, time, and energy.

Social Venture Partners goes beyond philanthropy. With a network of over 2600 Partners worldwide, we connect people with diverse skills and a shared passion for meaningful volunteer opportunities with local nonprofi t organizations. Together, we help these organizations improve organizational capacity and move to the next level – achieving more than any of us could accomplish alone.

• We greatly appreciate the Board service of Trevor Callan, Laurin Pause, Louarn Sorkin, Adam Brown and Sherri Neasham who have stepped off the SVP Board. They will be missed. I’m pleased to welcome fi ve new Board members, who bring valuable experience and dedication.

As we enter the new fi scal year, I am confi dent in the future of our organization. Our Partners bring inexhaustible talent and enthusiasm to our work and I want to thank all of you for your involvement in San Diego Social Venture Partners. Your personal investment of time, expertise and fi nancial support make a tremendous diff erence in our community. I encourage you to learn more about your impact in our Annual Report and share these successes with others.

Sincere thanks,

Ray Ellis

I am honored to serve as the Board Chair of San Diego Social Venture Partners. As you know, I assumed the role on January 1st of the year and will conclude my term on December 31st. After being on the Board for over six years, I think it’s safe to say that this Fiscal Year has been the biggest transition year I have witnessed.

While there have been some challenges, we have made great progress in many key areas.

• Adding Lakshmi Paranthanman as our Executive Director in October was a great step forward after Marion Paul’s relocation. Lakshmi brings great passion and energy to SVP and has assembled a talented team to advance our mission.

• We developed a solid strategic plan and are moving into the fi nal phases of completion. The considerable work by Board Members, Staff and our Partners will result in a more engaged, resilient, and impactful organization.

• Under the enthusiastic leadership of Marty Goodman and his team, Advance San Diego is shaping up to be another big success on October 8th, 2014.

• As a transition byproduct, we suff ered a decline in Partners, however our recruiting and engagement eff orts have been re-focused and we are building excellent momentum.

As Marty explains, “SVP enables me to leverage Partner and outside resources to give back in a way many times greater than I could ever do on my own... what I didn’t expect, and have pleasantly discovered, was how personally rewarding and fulfilling SVP can be for me.”

Unbelievable energy & passion not only for ASD but also for

SVP. Marty is the poster child for what we hope every partner could be, but almost none of us will ever live up to the standard he sets!

SDSVP. He goes above and beyond just annual donations, and is an outstanding example of SVP at its finest.

Marty considers himself a recovering entrepreneur and aspiring philanthropist. For 30 years, Marty has started and run several businesses including a government software company, a kids parenting and behavior program, a loan exchange for private lenders, and a real estate acquisition and lending firm. However, after many years Marty said, “I left the business world in order to have time to give back. Ironically, I learned about SVP from my Vistage business group and thought it would be a great way to leverage business skill sets to improve the lives of others.”

During his three years at SDSVP, Marty has been a major force behind the start of Advance San Diego (ASD). As the ASD Committee Chair, he is instrumental in ASD’s continual and exponential success. Marty is also a SDSVP Board Member and has volunteered to be the Lead Partner for our new Investee, Just in Time for Foster Youth.

Every year, San Diego Social Venture Partners awards one Partner with the Bingham Stone Award. The award is named in recognition of the founders of SDSVP- Darcy Bingham and Carrie Stone. The Partner who receives this award has shown outstanding leadership, commitment, and attitude towards SDSVP, our Partners, and our Investees.

This year, SDSVP is proud to announce Martin Goodman as the recipient of the 2014 Bingham Stone Award. Marty is a tireless Partner who puts his heart and soul into everything he does at

2014 Bingham Stone Award Winner: Martin Goodman

Since joining SVP, Jen has been instrumental as a member of our Strategic Planning Committee and has made sure that our new strategy focuses on how can SDSVP can make the biggest impact for the San Diego community and for our Partners. Also within her first year, Jen has been both a Mentor and a committee member for the Advance San Diego fast pitch competition and has showed the power of how a clear pitch opens doors and propels organizations far beyond simple fundraising. To add just a little more to her plate, Jen has graciously agreed to become our new Treasurer!

Jennifer has over 20 years of experience ranging from consulting and auditing non-profits and universities at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to teaching and training professionals on behalf of California Department of Education. Leveraging this experience, Jen hosted an Education Event for our Partners and Investees called

“Translating Non-Profit Financials into English.”

Jennifer currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Institute for Mastering Success. The Institute coaches and consults business professionals to take consistent action to acheive their goals faster.

She became a Partner in September 2013 and has already become a leader. “I joined SVP because of the ability to volunteer in the San Diego community at a deeper level,” explains Jen. “We do this by focusing on addressing fundamental issues of an organization with the intent to make a lasting impact, and not solely a Band-Aid approach.”

“In facilitating an educational event this year, I was able to combine my passion and expertise in education and business coaching with my non-profit accounting skills, while building financial statement understanding for Partners and improving the confidence and know-how of our Investees’ leaders.”

Jennifer has been a great contributor to both SVP and our

Investees. She conducted an outstanding workshop on How to Read Non-Profit Financial Statements' for our Lead Partners that really put their knowledge to the test.

BLCI’s Executive Director, Jose Cruz, says, “SDSVP partners have been a tremendous resource for us for internal systems and have played an instrumental role in our growth. Their expertise and professionalism is truly appreciated among the board and staff. SDSVP volunteers have become members of the BLCI family.”

REBOOT assists veterans in making a successful transition from military service to civilian life, with all veterans achieving their goals in the transition domains of employment and career, education, living situation, personal effectiveness/wellbeing, and community. They do this by providing early-stage cognitive-behavioral educational intervention, to help veterans “reboot” from military programming. The organization was established by a group of retired high ranking Naval and Marine Corps

officers and workforce development professionals that are filling a tremendous gap in the continuum of veteran services.

REBOOT has helped over 1,100 service men and women successfully transition from military to civilian life with a three-week, behavior-based reintegration workshop. They are now expanding REBOOT nationally and have become a preeminent leader in military to civilian transition.

This is my third year as Lead Partner for Pro Kids, and the experience has been more rewarding than I imagined. The Pro Kids board, staff and SDSVP resource teams work

exceptionally well together which has led to increasing the number of youth served. And that’s what it’s all about!

lisa Curry, Lead Partner Pro Kids

Pro Kids

Pro Kids challenges underserved youth to excel in life by promoting character development, life skills, and values through education and the game of golf. They have had countless success stories over their 20 years. One such example is Eddie. A refugee from Uganda, Eddie’s family received a lottery ticket to leave the refugee camp and move to San Diego. After living in a homeless shelter for years, Eddie found Pro Kids. Pro Kids provided Eddie a scholarship to attend California State University, Los Angeles where he graduated with a degree in

political science in 2002. He now is opening an orphanage in Uganda with programs that incorporate and education and sports in their core values, a model similar to Pro Kids'.

As a result of working with SVP, Pro Kids is a stronger and more effective organization. They achieved improvements in board governance, clarity of mission, adoption of a 3-year plan, the ability to measure outcomes, and significantly improved internal communications.

Olivewood Gardens connects and motivates students and families from diverse backgrounds through organic gardening, environmental stewardship, and nutrition education- empowering them to be healthy and active citizens. They received 9,589 visits from children, family members, and community members, and an additional 3,488 visits

Together, Olivewood and SDSVP have identified the key stories that show Olivewoods uniqueness, and developed their leadership through Board Committees and volunteer action. Creating the For Impact Engagement Tool was a huge success and Olivewood is excited to take this Vision out to the community to recruit more champions and investors.

In October 2013, San Diego Social Venture Partners held the 2nd Annual Advance San Diego Competition- a showcase of nonprofit innovators who have found better ways to positively impact our community.

Thirty accepted applicants attended two workshops and worked closely with individual mentors paired from the business community to refine their pitches, and tell their stories in the most compelling ways possible. From

this group, 15 finalists were selected to compete in a “fast pitch” competition in front of a panel of judges and a live audience of over 400 foundations, philanthropists, and community members.

Each nonprofit leader had three minutes to powerfully communicate their visions and capacities to create positive social change. These outstanding nonprofits competed for awards totaling $75,000 in cash plus in-kind services.
