1. Introduction
Since the first Formula One Championship was won by Giuseppe Farina in 1950,
millions of fans around the world have followed the many political intrigues, fallouts,
technical developments, personalities and advancements in the sport. Cars are now
capable of racing at speeds up to 320 km/hr around the purpose built, and also street
circuits, that make up the annual racing calendar – taking place in countries from
across the globe. Singapore has held the unique position of hosting the first and only
night race during the season since 2008.
This programme is intended to arouse students’ interest in the wealth of facts
and information about the history and running of Grand Prix racing – using both the
physical resources of the Library Collection, and also the Internet.
2. Objectives
The Inside F1 programme is designed to:
• arouse students’ interest in the wealth of facts and information about the
history of racing.
• introduce students to the basics of a racing car.
• introduce students to the use of various resources to find appropriate
information, including the library Reference Collection and the Internet.
3. Learning Outcomes
On completion of this programme, each student or participant will have had the
opportunity to attempt both core and extension activities, including:
• a quiz on the history and details of the Formula One season – CORE
• a word search on the names of famous drivers – CORE
• leant about the features of racing circuits and design their own – EXTENSION
• leant about the different countries hosting F1 races - EXTENSION
• appreciate the unique features of the Singapore F1 race and circuit - CORE
4. Target Group
Students from age group 13-15 years, effectively lower Secondary School Students,
are best suited to benefit from this programme.

6.1 Suggested Schedule of Activities
Day 1
Locate resources to create a Thematic Display in support of this programme.
Important: LC or HOD to complete and return the Pre-Programme Survey.
Day 3 Create interest in the programme activities by displaying posters (refer to Poster
Sets #1 and #2 provided) within the library, outside the library, on the library
notice board, school TV screen and/or other communication channels available
within the school.
Day 4
Set up Thematic Display
1. Decide on the display corners.
2. Create Thematic Display as per Section 7.1 of this manual, and display in the
selected corner.
The subject of the Thematic Display could include
• book titles from the library collection related to F1
• book titles form the collection related to the countries hosting F1 races
• information about current F1 teams and driver
• information about the history of F1 racing

7. Programme Delivery
7.1 Thematic Display
Resource List
Please refer to the Instruction Manual - Thematic Display. If you do not have a copy,
please contact your Civica’s Library Programme representative to obtain one.
Instruction List
Set up a Thematic Display to support this programme, in advance of the programme
start. It should ideally be left in place throughout the month (or other designated time
period) over which the programme is run in the school.
1. Decide on the display corners/area.
2. Collect materials to decorate and create a Thematic Display in the selected
corner/area.
The subject of the Thematic Display for this programme could include

~1 hour Preparation:
� The students should have read at least one
book about the history of Formula One.
� The Presenter should prepare to go through
the Power point presentation on Formula One.
The power point could also be run on the school TV
screen, if the school has the facility to do so, and
create wider interest.
Location Participants
60 mins Implementation:
� The Presenter should show the PowerPoint
presentation on ‘All about Formula One.’ Refer
to Presentation #1.
� The activity has to be done in a quiz format.
� The Presenter is required to pair the students
and they form a team.
� The Presenter to then ask quiz questions
given in the Reference Sheet #1 – Quiz
Questions, in any order of preference.

� The team to first answer correctly be given
the points accordingly. Also refer to the
Reference Sheet #1 – Quiz Questions for the
marks to be awarded for each correct answer.
� Please refer to the Scoring Template #1 for

� The team with the highest marks can be
declared the winner. The top 3 teams can be
rewarded.
Submission:
� The photos of the winning teams can be
displayed in the notice board.
The ‘All about Formula One’ presentation can be
displayed using the school TV screen(s) if
desired.
Extended Activity:
� The school can decide to include more
questions and conduct this as an intra-school
quiz competition which may revolve around
more general Formula One questions and not
just questions related to the history of F1.
This intra-school competition will garner wider
interest and more participation and hence
encourage reading.

If the school library has books related to F1
drivers, the books may be used to create a
Thematic Display, so that the students can borrow
the same for reading after the presentation on
Great Drivers and the related activity.

� Participants are asked to make their
submissions either to the Presenter or into the
submission boxes prearranged.
� The Presenter/Co-coordinator is requested to
display some of the completed activity sheets
as part of the Thematic Display in the library
to promote greater participation.

submissions either to the Presenter or into the
submission boxes prearranged.
� The Presenter/Co-coordinator is requested to
display some of the completed Formula One
Circuit designs as part of the Thematic Display
in the library, and other prominent areas in the
school, to promote greater participation.

completed activity sheets and combine these
into posters. They could also include them as a
part of an evolving Thematic Display in the
library and/or other prominent areas in the
school, to promote greater participation.
Extended Activity Suggestion:
� The Presenter can assign a country to each
group in the class.
� The group must create a poster with facts and
interesting pictures about the country, and
then each group may do a three minutes
presentation to the class about their country.
� The posters can then be used to decorate the
class and any follow-up activities with respect
to learning about different countries around
the world can be facilitated by the English
Teacher.

Information Sheet #1 – All about a Formula One Season
• A Formula One season consists of all the races approved by the FIA to be
run from March to October.
• The season is spread across various countries around the world.
• The approved Formula One teams field two cars each.
• The drivers are confirmed in the previous year.
• The drivers drive for the teams according to their contracts and they are
free to move to other teams.
• The teams generally are based in a particular country where they
develop their cars.
• The pre-season testing is done in FIA approved circuits in a pre-
determined time by FIA.
• According to the position each car finishes in at the end of a race, the
driver and their team earns points.
• Every race has top three finishers earning the respective trophies.
• Top 10 finishers earn points for themselves and their teams accordingly.
• At the end of the season, the driver with the most points takes the
Driver’s Championship, and the team with the most points takes the
Constructor’s Championship.

8. Other Considerations
• The schools may choose to reward student participation with a simple token of
appreciation.
• The schools can choose to display the student’s work at the canteen display
board / chosen display corner to encourage more participation in future.

� The Presenter is to provide feedback about the Programme to Civica’s
Programme Team once it has been executed.
a. The Presenter is required to obtain a sample group of students to fill up
the Programme Feedback Form.
b. The Presenter is required to complete the Programme Review Form.
� The completed activity sheets and the observations and comments of various
people associated during delivery of the programme can be used as inputs for
the review.
� The Programmes team will modify the programme, if required, in line with the
obtained feedbacks.
