We invite you to visit us at Iron Lake Ranch any time! The sale cattle are available for viewing at the ranch at your convenience prior to Wednesday, October 8th.

WELCOME TO OUR INAUGURAL SALE!

What started only a few years ago as a retirement hobby unexpectedly took on a life of its own.

Before I knew it, the hobby had developed into a passion for Hereford cattle and the people

raising them.

Over the past few years I traveled extensively, visiting Hereford ranches, meeting and talking

with the people who raise them, and learned to appreciate both the animals and the people.

These first few years were an intensive course in breed history, traits, genetics and management.

Along the way we met wonderful people who opened their homes to us, shared their experiences,

their friendship and contributed their advice, help and genetics. After many hours of brainstorming

and quite a few missteps, we devised the strategy of what we wanted to achieve.

Our goal is to develop a first quality product that offers predictability. Our herd consists of both

horned and polled Hereford genetics. We are developing animals that have good conformation

and structure with thickness and muscle shape. We strive for excellent udders, sound feet and

docility in their disposition. Calving ease, carcass traits and fertility are important breeding

criteria.

In an effort to meet all these criteria and in order to achieve our goals over the past few years,

we added to our herd some exceptional bulls and very important donor cows. These are the

foundation that will define our program in the years to come.

In our first sale, we offer genetics that include most of our influential bulls and cows. The

offering includes mature cows and their natural calves on the side. These cows have consistently

produced for us year after year. Fall calving and spring yearling bred heifers will be offered. We

also offer choice of several full sisters out of our fall 2013 crop and top heifer calves out of our

spring 2014 crop. Select embryo lots will be available as well as pick of ET calves at weaning

out of our Beth 1L donor. Also, our good friend Ronnie Storrs agreed to sell several of our jointly

owned heifers out of our donor cows.

Last but not least, I would like to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of our staff:

David Caraway, Darrell Pitchford and Francisco “Poncho” Miranda. I could not have done this

without them. It is hard to define Robbie Schacher’s multifaceted contributions, so the best way

to cover his immense support is “whatever needs to be done.”

Thank you for your interest in our program. We look forward to visiting with all of you.

Dear Friends and Cattle Breeders:

It is with great pleasure and excitement that I, along with Dustin Layton, present the

Iron Lake Ranch inaugural sale, “Iron Clad Genetics.” I am very proud to have been

a part of the program since the beginning of the registered Hereford herd.

My involvement at Iron Lake Ranch started when my old boss and friend, Craig

Ludwig, referred me to take some pictures for Dimitri. At the time I did not know

what I was about to get into, but I can tell you that my life changed that day.

Dimitri and his wife, Marina, refer to the ranch employees as family, and he treats us

all that way. If you have not had the opportunity to meet Dimitri, I highly recommend

that you come a day early and spend some time with him; you will certainly not be

disappointed with the entertainment.

The Iron Lake registered herd was built on the foundation of producing sound,

functional bulls and replacement females that are problem free. From the beginning,

we have focused on udder quality and structural correctness while still adding

performance and muscle. As you take the time to read this catalog, I am confident

that you will agree that our first offering of females certainly reflects the goals that

we have put in place. This offering is straight from the heart of the herd.

The livestock industry is in a unique position at this time. With the nation’s cow herd

reaching lows not seen since the 1950s, the price for cattle projects to be solid for the

foreseeable future. It is the perfect time to sell some of your older females and replace

them with younger, higher quality animals that will ensure the future of your herd.

If you have any questions about the cattle or would just like to talk about Iron Lake

Ranch and the Hereford beef industry, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank You,

Robert Schacher

2 “IRON CLAD GENETICS” • SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2014

In 2004, Dimitri Mataragas began to fulfill a lifelong dream of owning aranch. He purchased land in the east Texas town of Athens, and thatpiece of ground is what is still called “The Main Place” of what is now

Iron Lake Ranch. The cattle operation started with a few commercial cows, purchased mostly from local cattlemen and some with Brahman influ-ence. It did not take long to figure out that the herd needed improvementin weights, quality and temperament. With much research, we decided totry the Hereford influence on our cows. The change for the better was no-ticed immediately with the first calf crop. From there we made some con-tacts with breeders in the Hereford industry and purchased someregistered Hereford cows.

About the time we purchased our first registered Hereford cows, Texas beganone of the worst droughts since the 1950s, forcing us to significantly re-duce our cow herd numbers. From this, a plan was conceived to sell all ofthe commercial cattle and retain only the registered Herefords and to re-emerge post drought as a purebred Hereford operation focused on pro-viding the highest quality bulls and females with the traits that today’scattle industry demands—sound, functional cattle with plenty of rib, vol-ume and muscle, and yet retain the maternal traits of quality udders andplenty of milk. The plan was to use the new technology of the cattle in-dustry to move forward as rapidly as possible, and embryo transplant anda stable of powerful donors gave us the best opportunity to accomplishour goals. Many of these donors will be featured in the first few lots ofthis catalog.

In addition to our donor cows, we are dedicated to the philosophy that usingthe best herd bulls will move the herd forward and help to maintain thequality of the herd. With that in mind, we set out to put together a herdbull battery that we feel will rival many of the top programs in the nation.

THE IRON LAKE RANCH HERD SIRES

C Miles McKee – Our most recent ac-quisition is the one that we feel putsus over the top. The record-setting$600,000 Miles McKee was recentlynamed Supreme Champion at the2014 National Western and was themost talked-about bull in Denver—ofany breed! We first fell in love with Miles while he was a member of theColyer pen in Denver in 2013, where he exhibited an extremely powerfulmuscle mass and rib shape. He is a very well balanced bull that has ex-ceptional eye appeal. He has a flawless structure with a perfect angle to hisshoulder and hock, making his motion very fluid. His mother is the im-mortal C Notice Me, who has been the most prolific donor at Colyer Here-fords, producing well over $1,000,000 in progeny sales. We are very excitedabout the future of the program and the possibilities of the combinationof Miles and our donor herd. Owned with Colyer Herefords, Bruneau, ID;John Sullivan, Dunlap, IA; and Curtis and Jackie Castle, Crawford, OK.

CRR 719 Catapult 109 – Catapult offersthe perfect blend of phenotype, per-formance and genetic integrity. He isa sound footed, massively constructed, big bodied bull with great eye set andpigmentation. Eight generations ofCoyote Ridge-bred females back uphis pedigree with udder quality, fleshing ability, maternal strength andfertility. His first calves are truly remarkable, with several herd bull sonsselling at the 2014 National Western. They exhibit the muscle mass andstructural correctness that you would expect from this exceptional breeder.Owned with Coyote Ridge Ranch, LaSalle, CO.

Churchill Red Bull 200Z – Red Bull of-fers the complete package that the Here-ford breed is seeking. He offers anoutstanding number package that in-cludes a giant spread from BW to YWand ranks in the top1% of the breed forCE, WW, YW, REA and CHB$ as well as

the top 5% for BW and Milk. He combines this data with a powerful look…deep bodied and huge ribbed with plenty of length and volume. He is avery well balanced bull with muscle, a stout, square hip and a smoothfront end. He has full pigment and lots of red. His look is backed up byhis mother, Churchill Lady 002X, who is also the mother of ChurchillStud, who sold in excess of $100,000 at the 2014 Mile High Night NationalHereford Sale, and is a full sister to 008X, the Champion Heifer of the Na-tional Junior Hereford Show in 2011. In his own right, Red Bull wasnamed the Champion Hereford Bull of the 2013 Houston Livestock Show. The first calves are proving the calving ease data that he possesses whilemaintaining an outstanding look with the right pigment. Be sure to lookat the Red Bull calves featured in this offering. Owned with Churchill Cat-tle Co., Manhattan, MT, and the Red Bull Syndicate.

C CJC ILR Regal 3174 ET – Regal is apowerful beef machine! The lead bullin Colyer’s Champion Pen at the 2014National Western, he was also namedChampion Hereford Bull at Houstonin 2014. He is a stout, long-bodiedbull with huge rib and a powerful hipand leg but still ties in very wellthrough his neck and shoulder and travels very well. He is dark red incolor and ideal in his markings. This son of NJW 73S W18 Hometown10Y, the 2013 Denver Champion and 2014 Reserve Champion, will gen-erate powerful performance in his offspring. Several of the females in thesale carry the service of Regal, giving you the opportunity to have some ofhis first calves next spring. Owned with Colyer Herefords, Bruneau, ID;Curtis and Jackie Castle, Crawford, OK; and Triple L Ranch, Mexia, TX.

What a way to begin the Iron Clad Genetics Sale offering—embryos sired bythe $600,000 world record-setting bull, C Miles McKee 2103 ET, and outof 8129, dam of CSF 18U Olivia 2102, the 2013 North American Interna-tional Livestock Exposition Grand Champion Female. We had the oppor-tunity to purchase half interest in this proven donor from Burns Farms,Pikeville, Tenn., and jumped right on it. Females of this caliber don’tcome around very often, and we wanted to take full advantage.

8129 is a direct daughter of the now-deceased BR DM Sooner, whose semenis in very limited supply, and the immortal Gabrielle 5082, who has cer-tainly left her mark in the Hereford industry.

8129’s flush sister 8130 is the dam of the $240,000-valued Anastasia, whocommanded $120,000 for half interest in the 2013 Barber’s Red-and-White Holiday Lights Sale. Anastasia has had many accomplishments todate and most recently was crowned Grand Champion Female in the Bred-and-Owned division at this year’s Junior National Hereford Expo, held inHarrisburg, Penn., where her full sib brother was also the Bred-and-Owned Grand Champion Bull.

8129 is also a full sister to 1066, who was purchased in the spring 2012 Bar-ber’s Red-and-White Cowtown Lights Sale by Colyer Herefords, Bruneau,Id. 1066 went on to capture the Grand Champion Female banner at the2013 Fort Worth Stock Show and is now in the donor pen at Colyers.

The embryos stem from a traditional flush on 8129 and will be the only em-bryos sired by Miles McKee that will be sold by Iron Lake Ranch in 2014.

As we sat down to determine this first Iron Clad Genetics offering, wewanted to include a female from the ranch that would be carrying theservice of our resident herd sire Miles McKee. 965 quickly came to the top,and as you begin to analyze this striking female, you are probably askingwhy we would sell a female of this caliber. To put it simply, we wanted tooffer the best genetics that we have been building at Iron Lake Ranch. We wanted to offer females and bulls that we would want to buy!

The About Time daughters have not only excelled in the show ring but arealso excellent producers, producing real world cattle with look and style! This mating to Miles McKee could without question be a home run and, again, will be the only bred female carrying the service of Miles McKee tosell from Iron Lake Ranch in 2014.

From the beginning of the Iron Lake Ranch registered program, one of ourgoals was to produce herd bull prospects that have performance and style.396A ties it all together. He has outstanding data, with a moderate 2.4birth EPD to a 96 yearling EPD and a 28 for milk. He combines this datawith a powerful look…stout, big boned and structurally impeccable. Hehas impressive muscle shape down his top and carries this muscle deep inhis quarters. He is deep and bold sprung yet maintains a very eye-appeal-ing transition from his shoulders to his front.

These two P606 daughters out of M73 will be top maternal performers inany herd, and we predict that they will have excellent udders.

The dam of Lots 14 and 15, 8090U, was our choice of the donors at the Hoff-man Ranch Dispersal, held last fall. 8090U has been a prolific producerand has sons working for Accelerated Genetics, Topp Herefords and Jer-emy Brooks. In that Hoffman Dispersal, she had four open heifers siredby Outcross that averaged $9,700, and the lead bred heifer in that samesale, sired by Redeem, that commanded $10,000.

408B and 422B are the only two daughters sired by 88X and out of 8090Uborn at Iron Lake Ranch in the spring of 2014. They are both powerfulin their makeup and have that brood cow look. The genetic package hereis quite potent. We look forward to hearing more about these two out-standing individuals in the future.

What a way to kick off the spring bred heifer division with this full sister tothe 2012 Denver Grand Champion Female, exhibited by Haley Hudson.

We certainly describe this female as a future power cow. Just look at the wayshe carries that muscle down through her stifle, her huge bone, big bellyand feminine front end. The Outcross daughters are tremendous in pro-duction with their beautiful udders, small teats and lots of milk.

We believe this female without a doubt will wind up in some lucky person’sdonor pen. If she was staying at Iron Lake Ranch, that is where she wouldbe headed after calving. Texas Lady will be a standout on October 11th!
