R U N N E R S P O T L I G H The Navy-Air Force Half Marathon is quickly approaching. With all excitement for the race arousing, we take the time to interview Patrick Fernandez, runner who set the record in 2013 with a time of 1:07:52 and a 5 minute 11 secondmile per mile. Before he was an amazing runner, he was an ordinary runner like meand you. Heres his story:

You set the record for the run in 2013 and are running the race again to defend it.How did your running experience start? Were you always a fast runner like you aretoday?

Ive been involved in athletics for most of my life, competing in my first official rawhen I was in 3rd grade. I participated in various sports throughout elementaryschool, but it wasnt until high school that I began to really specialize in distancrunning. I competed in Cross Country and Track throughout high school andcollege, and although I was a good runner, I wasnt what you would call a superstarrunner who was winning major titles or making the local sports news page. When graduated college, I just wasnt ready to hang up the running shoes and decided tostick with the sport. And Im happy I made that decision because I have had my besrunning performances in my post-collegiate years and hope my best performancesare yet to come.

What is your favorite memory from the Navy-Air Force Half Marathon?

My favorite memory of the Navy-Air Force Half was definitely my race last year, whI ran my personal record for a half marathon and also set the course record. I thinkmost runners have photographic memories when it comes to the time and place theyearned a personal record for any given distance, this race was no different for me.

What are you looking forward to about racing this year?

Im training to eventually run an Olympic trials qualifying time for the marathon, sIm increasing my mileage and the intensity slightly during my current training cycIm looking forward to seeing how my time this year will stack up against my timfrom last year, and hope it will give me a good measure of where Im at in terms ofachieving that elusive marathon trials standard.

What, specifically, do you like about the Navy-Air Force Half Marathon? Is it thescenery, people, prizes?

My favorite part of the Navy-Air Force Half is the course. Along with the gett

a scenic tour of some of the nations most treasured monuments, I really love thewinding roads up through Rock Creek, and picking up momentum for the homestretch as you round Hains Point. And having a course with very distinct landmarkmakes it a good course to race strategically, as you can plan and stay aware of whenand where to make your moves.

What advice would you give to new runners?

The advice I would give to new runners would be first, to have fun! A large part odistance running involves staying in the right frame of mind. Attacking the course wia positive, can-do attitude is paramount for running at your full potential, and suchan attitude is best achieved when you are having fun and enjoying the experience,no matter how much physical pain you may be experiencing. The second and mostimportant piece of advice I would give is to believe in yourself! The body follows tmind, so if you want the body to perform successfully, you have to allow only thoughof success to enter your mind while putting to rest any thoughts of failure that try tcreep in. Think only of what you CAN do, never of what you cant do.
