Big Game Seasons and Application Regulations

New to the 2014 Big Game Seasons

Application Eligibility Changes and several NEW ElkHunt/Harvest Strategies were approved by the WildlifeCommission to increase elk harvest to meet populationobjectives.

Application Eligibility and Draw changes allow an

applicant to either: Apply for and draw both an Antlered Elk and Antlerless(Cow) Elk Tag in same draw.

Apply for and draw both a Spike Elk Only and AntlerlessElk Tag in same draw.

Apply for all antlerless elk hunts (Antlerless Elk, Antlerless Elk Management, and Antlerless ElkDepredation) in the same draw but only draw one (1)of these tags in the same year.

You are not allowed to apply for both an Antlered Elk andSpike Elk hunt in the same draw.

Spike Elk Only ri e and archery hunts in all Area 6 unitgroups.

Combination Antlerless Elk Management hunt and MuleDeer hunt - allows a successful mule deer tag applicantto draw an antlerless elk management tag for the sameseason dates and within the same unit group as the muledeer tag. This will hopefully increase cow elk harvestwithout additional hunters and added hunter congestion.

Combination Antlerless Elk Management hunt and Antlered Elk hunt - allows a successful antlered elk tagapplicant to draw an antlerless elk management tag forthe same season dates and within the same unit groupas the antlered elk tag.

With the new Ewe hunts a person will need to choose

between applying for ram or ewe hunts in the samesubspecies. They will not be able to apply for both inthe same subspecies.

Changes to the 2014 Big Game Seasons Added an additional pronghorn doe hunt for Units 131

and 145. The early antlerless elk ri e season was moved to Sept.

17 Oct. 6 in place of the elk muzzleloader season tohave a more successful weapon class to increase cowelk harvest to meet population objectives. The primaryOctober antlerless elk ri e mid season runs Oct. 720.

    A late antlerless elk season was added for Unit Groups061, 071 and 062, 064, 068, running Nov 21Jan 15.

Shift both Area 6 unit groups bull muzzleloader huntsand the Unit Group 062, 064, 066-068 antlerless elkmuzzleloader hunt to Sept. 116, and eliminate Unit 061,071 antlerless elk muzzleloader season due to too muchcongestion with bull muzzleloader hunt.

Shift Area 6 unit groups bull archery season to Aug.1631 and antlerless elk archery to Aug. 1-15.

All late antlerless elk ri e seasons were extended toJanuary 15 to allow for more elk harvest.

Wilderness Only antlerless elk rifle seasons wereestablished in Unit 162, 222, and 231 where huntersmay only hunt within the designated wilderness areasmanaged by either the Bureau of Land Management orU.S. Forest Service.

Unit 144, 145 Depredation Bull Elk Hunt was expandedto 3 consecutive seasons to accommodate more tags.

For Hunt 4107, Antlerless Elk Depredation hunt, multiple season set for Unit 121 and Units 144, 145 toaccommodate more tags and increase cow elk harvestand for Units 101103 only a single long season due tovery low hunter success in past years.

For desert bighorn ram hunt in Unit 212, Lone Mountain,2split seasons to reduce hunter congestion.

Nonresident desert bighorn ram hunts closed in Units262 and 266.

Nonresident California bighorn ram hunt closed in Unit033.

Resident Rocky Mountain bighorn hunt closed in Unit091.

Bighorn Ewe Hunts initiated in desert bighorn Units 212,213, and 268 and in California bighorn Unit 068 due toherds exceeding their sustainable management levelsand limited acceptable transplant opportunities.

Alternate Tag ProcessEvery year hundreds of tags are returned to the Departmentprior to the start of the season. Most of these returned tags arenot reissued. In an effort to give more hunters the opportunityto hunt big game, the process was changed last year.

During the online application process an applicant will af rmtheir willingness to be an alternate and accept an alternatetag by marking a check-off box on each species they areapplying for.

For example: When someone applies for an antelope tag, theywill be able to check a box that af rms If I am unsuccessful Iwill accept an alternate tag if it becomes available and (the/my) charge card will be charged immediately.

If you are unsuccessful in drawing an antelope tag you arethen automatically placed on the alternate list for the choiceson your application. To learn more check out NAC 502.4175

Bonus Point Program Guidelines Hunters will have the option to apply for a bonus pointwithout applying for a tag for a species. Participation requiresa nonrefundable $10 application fee for each bonus point onlyapplication, and the purchase of the hunting or combinationhunting and shing license. An applicant cannot receive a refundon their hunting license. There is a special bonus point code foreach hunt and it is listed above the season table in this book.

Resident and nonresident tag applicants receive a bonuspoint for each hunt category that has a quota set by the WildlifeCommission when they are unsuccessful in drawing a tagthrough the computerized random draw system. Bonus points are awarded by speci c species categories, each encompassing all separate weapons hunts available in thatcategory. Those categories are: antlered mule deer; antlerlessmule deer; antelope horns longer than ears; antelope hornsshorter than ears; bull elk; spike bull elk; cow elk; ram and ewecategories for desert (Nelson) bighorn sheep; California bighornsheep; Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep; mountain goat and blackbear. (See NAC 502.4188) Bonus points cannot be transferred to another person, or toanother species category. Applicants are only able to accumulateone bonus point per species category each year. For example, ifyou applied for an antlered deer any legal weapon tag and wereunsuccessful, and then applied for an antlered deer archery tag ina separate drawing, and were unsuccessful, you still only accrueone point because these are both in the antlered deer category. However, if you apply for an antlered deer any legal weapon tagand are unsuccessful, and then apply for a antlerless deer tagand are unsuccessful, you would receive a bonus point for eachbecause they are in two different categories - antlered deer andantlerless deer. Any bonus points accrued in the junior hunt will automaticallytransfer to the antlered deer category at the time the junior hunterbecomes ineligible for the junior hunt by either age, or after 5years of application for the junior hunt.

Those applying as a party hunt for deer or antlerless elk willhave their points averaged (total points of all hunters in the party, divided by the number of hunters) and rounded to the closestwhole number. Bonus points are squared by species category, resulting in the number of draw numbers that an individualhunter or hunt party will receive in that drawing. A hunters bonuspoints revert to zero in a particular species category when heis successful at obtaining a tag or fails to apply for that speciescategory for two consecutive years. If a person requests a hunting license refund, they will notearn bonus points for the current year. Depredation Hunts and Management Hunts do not earn bonuspoints.

    FAQS FOR ELK ELIGIBILITY

Can I put in for both a bull tag and a cow tag in 2014? Yes. New for 2014, clients will be able to put in for both a bulltag and a cow tag in the same draw. As a result they couldpossibly draw both tags and those tags could be in differentunit groups. We advise applicants to be aware of thatpossibility and make their choices wisely with this in mind.

With all these changes this year just exactly how manyelk tags could I obtain in the draw? Only one antlerlesselk tag and one bull elk tag.

What are these combination hunts? In December theCommission approved the ability for the Department to allowapplicants to apply for more than one elk hunt in the samedraw to address some herd management issues in partsof the state. One option approved was allowing applicantsto select an option to obtain an antlerless elk managementtag in addition to an antlered deer tag in the same unit andseason. This same type of option was approved for antleredelk also. The antlerless elk management tags will havethe same season as the base hunt (the antlered deer orantlered elk). The unit groups for these management tagsmay be all of the same units as the base hunt or a selection of

the same units to target the harvest of the management tag.

I put in for bull elk. Can I also apply for the antlered elkand the new spike elk hunt in the same draw? No. Youcan only apply for one type of hunt for antlered (bull) elk.

I put in for bull elk. Can I also apply for the new spikeelk hunt and the antlered elk depredation hunt in thesame draw? No. You can only apply for one type of huntfor antlered (bull) elk.

Elk Hunt Eligibility and Applica on Informa on (Contnued)I am in a waiting period for antlered elk, can I apply forthe new spike bull hunt? Yes.

I read about the combination hunts where a personcan apply for bull elk and opt to obtain an antlerlesselk management tag. I had a bull tag 2 years ago am

I eligible for these combination hunts? If you are in awaiting period on bull elk you are ineligible to participate inthe elk combination hunt. You must be eligible for the basehunt to be eligible for the combination hunt.

However, there are other selections available, you couldapply for the combination hunt on antlered deer. Also youare eligible to apply for the new spike bull elk hunt and anantlerless cow elk tag on separate applications.

Can I earn bonus points on the spike elk hunt ifunsuccessful? Yes, it is its own bonus point category.

Can I apply for the combination bull elk and the antlerlesselk management tag and a regular antlerless elk anylegal weapon hunt and the antlerless elk depredationhunt? Yes. However be advised you will be paying thenonrefundable application fees for each application yousubmit. You will only be able to draw one antlerless elk tag.You could have a low draw number for the antlerless elkdepredation hunt, draw that tag and all other antlerless elkapplications will be unsuccessful. Your bull tag applicationwill still be processed and you could still draw that tag.

Can I apply for both the new spike bull hunt and anantlerless elk hunt in the same draw? Yes. Be advisedyou could possibly draw both so make your selectionswisely. You can do this by clearly understanding the seasondates and where the unit groups are in the state. Also, ifunsuccessful for either hunt, bonus points will be earnedseparately on each.

How many antlerless elk applications can I submit inthe same draw? You can only submit one application foreach type antlerless elk hunt in the same draw. That meansyou could apply for an antlerless elk tag in a combinationhunt, antlerless elk hunt, and antlerless elk depredationif you choose to. Be advised that you will be payingthe nonrefundable application fees for each application

submitted. You will only be able to draw one antlerless elktag.

I am elligible for bull elk. Can I also apply for the antlereddeer and antlerless elk management option combinationhunt and the antlered elk and antlerless elk managementoption combination in the same draw? Yes.
