!!!! ABSOLUTELY SO MUCH TO CELEBRATE THIS MONTH !!!!!

Black History Month Happy Valentines Day

HONOR OUR PRESIDENTS

The different picture of President Obama is not an editorialI simply could not find the same picture of him in ClipArt as all the other presidents.

MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Whoever penned the quote Time flies when you are having fun, hit the nail right on the head. Here we are mid February. I dont know about the rest of you but I sure am looking forward to warmer weather, beach time, Full Moon parties and shagging in the sand.

Hope everyone got a chance to get out to Mid-Winter SOS and have a great time with friends. A group of our club members met at Pirates Cove Friday night and had a good time shagging and watching some of the best on the dance floor. Good times!

I am sure you will join me in my wish for Gary Sellers to have a rapid recovery from his recent by-pass surgery. Get well Gary. We cant wait to see you back on the dance floor.

Just a little reminder to everyone that we will be collecting non-perishable food items for the local food pantries at our February dance. We are also collecting items for the Matthews Ministry Backpack program in February and March. There is information later on in this newsletter and you can go to http://www.matthewsministry.com/ for more information on Matthews Ministry.

We had such a great response to our Moose Lodge meal at our dinner/dance last month that we have voted to have another dinner/dance. In April our dinner/dance meal will consist of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, a vegetable and roll. Please mark your calendars to remind you that you DONT need to bring a food item to share.

I am reaching out to all members who would like to volunteer to assist with the Coastal Shag Club annual golf tournament. This is our biggest fundraiser each year. We can use all the help that we can get. If you are willing to give us a hand please talk with one of the current officers or board members or send us an email at [email protected].

I leave you with this Valentines Day thought;

Love is not finding someone to live with; it's finding someone you can't live without

Sincerely,

Pat

Pat Boyd, President

MEMBER SPOTLIGHTS

MEET BOB AND CLAIRE COZZI

Claire and Bob were instrumental in starting up the Coastal Shag Club. In 2006 Claire and another founding member, Eunice Alison sat on Claires back porch and dreamed about starting a shag club. They came up with a name and Claire wrote some information to put in the Brunswick Beacon to start spreading the word. They began having organized dances at the Brierwood Clubhouse in Shallotte and things started to take shape. Soon they had a large group of people coming to each dance and it was decided they needed to form an official club. The first official meeting was held in November 2007, a list of charter members was drafted, by-laws were developed and approved and before you knew it, a new shag club was formed on the southern coast of Brunswick County. Thank you Claire and Eunice! Although Eunice now shags in heaven, Claire continues to be a major part of the CSC.

The Cozzis moved to Shallotte from Westfield, NJ in l996. They both grew up in NJ and never lived out of state until they relocated to NC. Claire was educated at Montclair State University where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree. She later obtained a Social Work license and was a counselor for abused women for sixteen years. Claire also did freelance writing for the New York Times and wrote a weekly column for two local weekly newspapers. Bob attended Middlesex County College and Kean College of New Jersey, and had his own business, RJ Cozzi Training and Development Association, until his retirement.

Bob and Claire both love to dance and they met and fell in love jitterbugging and Swing dancing during many summer weekends at the Jersey Shore. Bob and Claire have two children, Annmarie and Robert. They have no grandchildren but more nieces and nephews than they can count! Annmarie is an attorney and an Assistant Prosecutor in Bergen County NJ. Roberts day job is a hotel manager and he has a Masters Degree from NYU where he teaches a course in hotel management. Robert continues his Moms writing talent as he had a book of poetry published in 2013 and has a book of essays coming out next year.

Besides dancing, they love golfing and Bob is a baseball fanatic! Anyone who knows Bob knows he loves talking sports. In his younger days, Bob coached both baseball and basketball, was a semi-pro baseball pitcher and only quit playing softball at the senior level after he had to have a hip replaced. Bob worked with Special Olympics and misses being able to work with the kids. Bob is active with the Senior Alliance Committee and is very excited to finally see the new Shallotte Senior Center on Hwy 17 open. In fact, Bob was instrumental in organizing the Coastal Shag Club to support the Shallotte Senior Center. In 2013 the CSC donated many items to the new senior center (see CSC January 2013 Newsletter.) Claire remains busy on the CSC Board and on the Friends of the Rourk Library Board.

The Cozzis of course love Beach Music but in addition to that, Bob loves the Oldies, Bruce Springsteen and Willie Nelson while Claire is a fan of Bon Jovi (after all he is a Jersey Boy,) U2, Darius Rucker and Stevie Nicks. They have a very eclectic music collection!

Married 54 years, Bob and Claire are now facing a battle against the effects of Bobs diagnosis of cancer. They want to thank the CSC members for all their support, well wishes, delicious dinners, and visits. They miss dancing and we definitely miss the two of them and will keep them in all our prayers and hope to see them soon.

Meet Roy and Thelma Herring

Roy and Thelma are Charter Members of the Coastal Shag Club and have been an integral part of its growth and fun! They hosted the first meeting to officially organize the Coastal Shag Club on Sunday, November 4, 2007 in the Lake Tree Shores Clubhouse using the By-Laws from the Waccamaw Shag Club. Roy is presently the CSC photographer at our dances and Thelma served as a CSC Board Member 2008 2010 and is the clubs current Vice-President.

They met at the Waccamaw Shag Club Dance at Lake Waccamaw, NC in April, 1995. Thelma was greeting at the door and Roy walked in with the clubs dance teacher, Mike Formyduval, who introduced them. Roy began taking shag lessons at the club and since Thelma helped with shag lessons and line dance lessons, they began to see each other often at classes as well as outside of classes. They married six months later on October 22, 1995.

Roy was born in Whiteville, NC, graduated from Whiteville High School and after attending Southeastern Community College for two years, joined the Navy and made a career in Cryptology-Communications. He has twins, Simon and Sara, from his first marriage to Judy. The twins were born in London, England and Roy and his family lived in and traveled to many places from the Iron Curtain to the Bamboo Curtain. After Judy died of cancer, Roy moved back to the Whiteville area in 1994. His son, Simon, lives in Columbus, OH, is married to Tracy and has four children, Bravin, Lain, Maryn, and Camden. His daughter, Sara, lives in Reno, Nevada with her twin sons, Christopher and Kyle. Upon returning to the Whiteville area, Roy opened his own business, Canbriam Photograph Restoration which he had for 6 years. After closing his business, he worked in Inventory Management at Home Depot in Shallotte for 5 years and for the past eight years as worked for the Brunswick County Schools as a computer technician.

Thelma was born in Loris, SC, graduated from Loris High School, received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Campbell University and her Masters Degree and Administrative Certification in Education K-9 from Pembroke State University. Thelma retired from teaching in 2001 after 30 years with the Whiteville City Schools. Thelmas first marriage was to Randolph Prince who was a Captain with US Air out of Charlotte until his passing in 1994. They had two sons Randolph Jr. and Patrick. Randolph Jr. is a Lieutenant with the Navy Explosive Ordinance Team in Virginia Beach, VA and Patrick works with Federal Express out of Wilmington. They were blessed with three granddaughters Katie, Katelyn , and Ana-Gracyn and one grandson, Cameron.

Roy and Thelma continued taking shag dance lessons as well as ballroom dancing. After 18 years together they can be seen at all the Summer Concert Series at Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach and Holden Beach. They enjoy SOS events as well in North Myrtle Beach each year. Their favorite music is Beach, Easy Listening, and music from the 50s. Some of their favorite bands are Carolina Breakers, Craig Woolard Band, and Rick Strickland Band.

In addition to dancing, they both are active members at Camp United Methodist Church in Shallotte. Roy sings in the Choir and serves on the Board of Trustees, Thelma teaches Adult Sunday School and serves on the Altar Guild, and they both work in the Church Food Pantry. They also volunteer as ushers at all the Brunswick Community College Concert Series events at Odell Williamson Auditorium. They are enjoying retirement by working on their families genealogy, Roy taking pictures, and Thelma planning trips around the world such as the one they are currently on to New Zealand and Australialucky them!!!!

Matthews Ministry Backpack Program

Kristi Disbrow, Founder

www.matthewsministry.com

910-457-9459, [email protected], 5149 Fernwood Dr. Southport, 28461

As we did in 2013, CSC is again this year helping to provide backpacks and food items for Brunswick County elementary schools to distribute on Fridays to those students who qualify. This charitable effort provides food for children in those families who may go without adequate meals over the weekend.

We will collect backpacks and food items at our February and March dances to be donated to this worthy cause.

I excerpted information on Matthews Ministry from their brochuresee below.

Matthews Ministry

Is a private, non sectarian, childrens food Backpack Program serving the children in Brunswick County, NC. Matthews Ministry is a 501(c)3 public charity established in 2010. Mission Statement: to eliminate weekend and non-school day hunger for Brunswick County school children by establishing a viable Backpack Program. Vision: to acquire food through donation and purchase; to be distributed through the Backpack Program, and to encourage and support partnerships, collaboration and cooperation with individuals and entities that are able to help in fulfilling this mission.

26% of Brunswick Countys children are food insecure... During the school year on weekends, when school breakfast and lunch programs are not available many of these children go without food. Matthews Ministry Backpack Program provides weekend food in a backpack for Brunswick Countys food insecure children.

What is food insecurity

In the United States, more than one out of five children lives in a household with food insecurity, which means they do not always know where they will find their next meal. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 16.7 million children under 18 in the United States live in this condition, unable to consistently access nutritious and adequate amounts of food necessary for a healthy life.

Food insecure children are identified by school professional staff and county agencies. Keeping identities confidential, school staff contacts Matthews Ministry with the number of children at their school that need weekend food. Each week during the school year Matthews Ministry Backpack Program provides each child enrolled in the Backpack Program a menu specific food filled backpack to ensure each child has food to eat from Friday after school to Sunday night. On Monday the children return their empty backpacks to school to be collected, refilled and distributed again at the end of the week by Matthews Ministry volunteers.

All of the food & backpacks for Matthews Ministry Backpack Program are purchased with money raised from monetary & food donations, grants, food drives and community fund raisers.

Matthews Ministry is proud to be in partnership with The United Way of the Cape Fear Area and a partner agency of the FOOD BANK OF CENTRAL & EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA AT WILMINGTON

History of Matthews Ministry

December 2010 - Matthews Ministry supplied backpacks of food to 1 child in 1 school with 1 volunteer.

August 2011 the NC State Board of Education Resolution to Promote School Breakfast states: NC ranks second in the nation in children who suffer from hunger and food insecurity.

December 2011125 children were enrolled in Matthews Ministry Backpack Program.

January 2012 to early 2013 - enrollment in-creased to 562 children in 12 schools and 30+ volunteers.

26.7% (5,300) children in Brunswick County, NC are food insecure.

Matthews Ministry is supported solely through the generous donations and support of individu-als, foundations, charitable organizations and businesses that are united in their concern for the well being of Brunswick County children.

SHALLOTTE, NC

MOOSEHEART CHILD CITY & SCHOOL is a community and school for children and teens in need, located on a 1,000-acre campus, 38 miles west of Chicago. Over its 97-year history, Mooseheart has been home to nearly 12,000 young people, ranging in age from infancy through high school.

Founded in 1913 by the Moose fraternal organization, Mooseheart is supported completely through private donations -- the great majority of which continue to come from the 1.1 million men and women of the Moose fraternal organization, in more than 1,700 Lodges and 1,600 Chapters located throughout the U.S., Canada , Great Britain and Bermuda. Moose International headquarters is located on the Mooseheart campus.

Mooseheart provides complete home care, education and training for youth

whose families are unable, for a wide variety of reasons, to care for them. Some have lost one or both parents; others are living in environments that are simply not conducive to healthy growth and development.

Children and teens live in one of approximately 30 residences, each designed like a spacious single-family residence. Each is home for six to twelve children. The heart of the program is our trained Family Teachers -- in-home caregivers who provide a consistent, systematic method of care, with emphasis on social-skills development; skills essential for success in later life.

It is Mooseheart's policy to admit qualified children who have a need. The Admissions Committee considers all applications of children in need.
