Since our very first store opened its doors 50 years ago, Tim Hortons has remained committed to top quality, value, service and community leadership. It’s these core values that have allowed us to grow and remain a beloved part of this wonderful city.
We at Tim Hortons, are especially pleased to partner with an event that not only shares our passion of being an active member of the community, but also strives to create a positive impact in that community. We also understand the value of quality experiences for children, be it through our Timbits Sports programs, annual Smile Cookie fundraiser, or events like the Northern Alberta International Children’s Festival. By investing in our future, we hope the youngest members of our community thrive and grow.
Together with our restaurant owners, Tim Hortons is proud to present the 2014 Northern Alberta International Children’s Festival and help kids discover the power of their imaginations. This unique environment encourages children to explore and experience different cultures, traditions and means of artistic expression. By challenging imaginations and fulfilling curiosities, we are helping children gain confidence in their abilities and take pride in their accomplishments. Imagination Takes Flight and community bonds truly grow stronger during five magical days in the heart of downtown St. Albert.

Few things in life are as wonderful as witnessing a child’s natural creativity awakened and engaged. Whether watching a performance or participating in cultural activities, Imagination Takes Flight into the realm of limitless possibility and endless inspiration for these curious leaders of tomorrow.
For St. Albert – The Botanical Arts City, culture is a part of our community identity. For over three decades this Festival has served as a signature cultural event in our region, cultivating countless young minds and building bridges between art, culture and education.
Hundreds of energetic volunteers, bursting with community pride and spirit, come together every year to bring this world-class event to St. Albert. When over 50,000 people come out to ‘play’ in our city, the economic impacts are as widespread as the Festival’s range of international performers. It’s not just imaginations that take flight, but economic opportunities that help make our community thrive.
On behalf of St. Albert City Council, thank you for joining us and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Nolan Crouse Mayor, City of St. Albert – The Botanical Arts City

Message from the Friends of the Northern Alberta International Children's Festival Society
Without encouragement, those tiny sparks of precious inspiration risk fading just as quickly as they appeared. But the Northern Alberta International Children’s Festival is a magical place, where inspiration is nurtured, where exploration is encouraged and where, finally, Imagination Takes Flight.
The Friends of the Northern Alberta International Children’s Festival Society are proud to support such an exceptional event in our city—an event that draws families to St. Albert from all across Alberta to spend time together laughing, singing, imagining and learning.
Through government advocacy and fundraising initiatives like the Festive Fundraiser and the always scrumptious Cupcake Challenge, the Friends are able to help Festival staff maintain the levels of artistic excellence, as well as accessibility, patrons have come to expect from the Children’s Festival. It is vital that we keep this unique opportunity open to all children to discover and develop; we thank each and every one of the businesses, government partners, individuals and volunteers who have supported the Festival this year. Your generosity truly fuels young imaginations.
Please visit us again this year on May 10 at St. Albert Centre for our annual Cupcake Challenge and show your support for the Festival by purchasing a half dozen or so delightfully decorated lil’ cupcakes!
It’s almost time for the Festival to take off. And the Friends could not be more excited to be soaring with it!
Everyone knows children have big imaginations, but in a world full of electronic gadgets, it’s easy to forget just how much joy and creativity imagination can fuel. The ability to imagine oneself in another person’s place is important to the development of social skills and empathy. A healthy imagination helps children, of any age, learn to express themselves and develop self-confidence. Albert Einstein once said “Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”
By exposing our kids to experiences such as the Northern Alberta International Children’s Festival, we are opening their minds to a bigger and more exciting world. Performances and activities are meticulously planned to introduce many facets of arts and culture. Children will tap into the power of imaginative thinking as they sing and dance to world music, interact with roving artists, listen to stories about faraway places, and create their own masterpieces.
Thanks to the dedicated support and overwhelming generosity of our partners, sponsors and volunteers; thousands of children are headed toward a lifetime of creativity as their Imaginations Take Flight.

Re-defining the limits of traditional French-Canadian folk music, this versatile trio’s infectious beat is guaranteed to get kids tapping their toes and stomping their feet. On their guitars, banjos, mandolins, accordions, washboards and harmonicas, these multi-instrumentalists play music full-tilt, often giving the feeling of an even bigger group on stage! Integrating foot percussion, a Québécois music tradition, jig, and body percussion, this Montreal-based trio creates a bilingual music experience that sounds fresh and modern, while transcending boundaries and ages.
“Bon Débarras’s name translates as ‘Good Riddance’, but that’s the last thing anyone’s likely to say…’Wow!’ is the more usual response, thanks to the group’s
energetic fusion of traditional step-dancing, Québécois folk music, and influences from around the globe.”

Brace yourself for an invasion of alien sludge monsters and a theatrical experience that is truly out of this world. Fearless reporter Molly Sloan and her faithful assistant Timmy Mendez uncover the story of the century and embark on a journey across space to save 1933's earth from evil extraterrestrials from the planet Zygon.
Part graphic novel, part radio play, this epic tale is pure fun and a visual feast unlike anything the average earthling has seen before. Three actors, dozens of characters, live music and sound effects, and over 1,000 two-story-high, hand-drawn, full-colour, mind-blowing comic images projected above the characters.
This unique performance will have kids shouting ‘take me to your theatre’.

‘Munsch’ right along into the wacky world of your kids' favourite books. This adorable puppet-based adaptation of a selection of tales by children’s storybook giant, Robert Munsch, is pure magic. From a little girl who refuses to change her smelly socks, to another who wishes for things like a snowstorm in the middle of summer, cherished characters will come to life before eager eyes. Original handcrafted, muppet-style puppets, a live narrator, and loads of audience participation will bring on barrels of belly laughs and memories to last a lifetime.
“More than a hunch you’ll love Munsch. How is a presentation of children’s stories by Robert Munsch like a rock concert? I’ll bet that by the end of this well-constructed hour, Mom and Dad are having as much fun as their kids.”

In this whimsical story, a feisty puppet queen, bored with her dreary black and white world, orders a court painter to bring her kingdom to life with a rainbow of colour. With help from the audience, she soon learns, however, that it is possible to have too much of a good thing.
This unique method of storytelling will awaken any child’s imagination with an inventive fusion of live shadow puppetry, music and painted projections. Based on a book by one of Europe’s best-known children’s authors, Jutta Bauer, this award-winning performance has travelled across the globe and encouraged countless youngsters to ‘colour outside the lines’.
A Festival favourite in 2007, this magical event sparkles with lovable laughter and cheerful energy.

This charming and intimate show tells the life of Louis Braille, who at three years of age lost his sight and grew up in a world full of shadows and touches. At a time when those who were blind lived as societal outcasts, Louis’ willpower to read and write coupled with the support of his family and community, led him to invent something remarkable – an alphabet for the blind.
Developed and performed by one of Israel’s leading puppeteers, this enriching experience combines materials from the world of writing such as paper, ink, chalk, and pencils with original music, narrative, shadows, and the flexibility of light. This critically acclaimed show continues to leave crowds around the world speechless.

Help spread the story of the Peace Crane, by learning the Japanese art of paper folding. The paper crane is an ancient origami pattern that symbolizes health and peace. Asian legend states that when 1,000 origami cranes are folded a wish can be granted. Using an ordinary ‘peace’ of paper, kids will add one crane to the growing installation moving through the hallways of St. Albert Place, and another to share the message of peace and hope with their own family and friends at home.

Hundreds of paintings. One masterpiece. Led by renowned local artist Lewis Lavoie, children paint their own square tile that will become part of a larger mural mosaic known as the Pubble People.
Each painting is important to make the big picture come to life and young painters feel incredible pride knowing that their artistic mark will be part of something even more spectacular, and celebrated by the entire community. Since 2010, the imaginations of over 2,000 school children have been captured in eight unique murals that have become part of the City of St. Albert’s Public Art Collection.

With that spirit in mind, this unique city landmark serves as a starting point for an adventurous walk along the scenic riverbank and the Global Canadian Heritage Trail. Here you’ll experience stories and crafts that’ll help you discover and learn more about Canadian and world cultures and communities. Don’t miss the roving performers who provide plenty of fun, smiles and laughter along the trail too.

The First Nations people of the Plains did not have words and letters to tell stories of their battles, heroes and daily life. They used pictures and symbols to write on rocks, caves and scraps of buffalo hide. Children will re-create Canada’s oldest and most widespread artistic tradition with their own interpretive drawing that can be taken home. Discovering that some of the earliest art in public places was created thousands of years ago by the Plains people, kids will also get to contribute to a collaborative pictograph mural that everyone can enjoy.

Tuesday: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday: 9:30 a.m. Thursday: 1:30 p.m. Friday: 9:45 a.m. Saturday: 12:00 p.m.
Experience the magic and excitement of children’s theatre before it hits the mainstage! In this rare behind-the-scenes presentation of a staged reading, children will have direct impact on the development of a Canadian-written, Edmonton-developed new work. By providing feedback and meeting the playwright, kids will walk away engaged and inspired.
Based on a true event, The Book of Ashes, focuses on the chief librarian of the Central Iraqi Library who saved as many books as she could (30,000 volumes: almost ¾ of the library’s collection) as foreign troops stormed the city of Basra in 2003. The story is a testament to one woman’s inspiring vision, the value of literature and the wages of war.
Curriculum Connections: creative expression, awareness of form, exploring media and techniques, recycling and environmental awareness, demonstrating attentive listening and viewing.
