NTING TIPS

Nutraceuticals/Phytochemicals

nutraceuticals are substances that provide a healthy benefit to the human body. High levels of these compounds have been identified in all berries. Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and currants all have generous quantities of these health-promoting compounds. The varieties marked with a H in this catalog contain the highest levels of these phytochemicals.

look for this symbol throughout our catalog. it means that we are the exclusive U.S. and/or north American distributor for these sought-after varieties. Buy your plants from the source of professional plantsmen—nourse Farms

Shrinking budgets for strawberry and bramble research have made it essential to generate funding from other sources. nASGA and nARBA have contacted nurserymen in the US and Canada with a plan to collect $1.00/1000 strawberry plants and $0.01/bramble plant sold during the course of a year. Funds collected are then distributed to research projects that have been approved by the committees of these groups. nourse Farms is an active participant in this voluntary collection program.

You can Grow Healthy! Growing berries is not just a way of assuring an abundance of fresh, delicious and colorful fruit; it’s also an easy way to add beauty and interest to your landscape. since each variety of plant has its own distinct growth habit, the benefi t of planting berries off ers both aesthetic and practical rewards. While choosing nourse farms as your supplier of berry plants will get your garden off to a healthy start, eating more fruit can help you grow healthy in both mind and body!

Cane plantings such as blackberries and raspberries will climb fences and trellises and become a lovely ornamental hedge; they will also burst with color in the spring just before bearing their fruit.

The No Planting Zone is a guideline for all of our plants. Planting in areas that see little or no sun will lead to plants that will struggle to survive. if plants do survive, the small crop produced will have a lot of disease pressure.

The Caution Zone is a place where plants will struggle during high heat months. Because of extra protection from wind and higher temperatures, plants and fruit can get an overdose of sun and heat.

elderberry bushes are fast growing and hardy. They typically grow quite large and full with clusters of tiny white fl owers in late spring followed by clusters of berries in late summer.

Blueberry bushes, excellent for beginners, develop into 4- to 6-foot tall shrubs that turn a brilliant red in the fall.

Currants and goose-berries provide an excellent low border, and gooseberry bush-es’ thorns will keep out unwanted pests. Strawberries make a perfect ground cover. Planting a few varieties will produce berries all season long.

Nourse Farms is excited to off er 3 new strawberry varieties for 2014. We’ve been testing these varieties over three years to make sure they add something

unique and improved over existing berries on the market. Each one of these new

selections promises superior fl avor and production potentials than that of their

seasonal rivals. Our list of strawberry varieties will allow you to grow delicious

strawberries from June right through to the fi rst hard frost - even in cool, northern

climates and higher elevations! Growing several varieties of strawberries not only

extends your production season, it also spreads the risk of loss to weather and garden

pests. Your biggest challenge will be to limit yourself to just one or two varieties.

MAYFLOWER

Page 7: 2014 Nourse Farms Home Grower Catalog

S O n ATA

Most strawberry growers allow their beds to become over grown with too many plants. Maintaining a minimum of 4-6 inches between plants will yield bigger and juicer berries.

Take time to locate good straw mulch. Hay or cheap straw will carry pounds of weed seeds. Apply the straw in mid to late november, just as the soil begins to freeze. We believe 2-3 inches over the entire bed is best. We do not recommend leaves.

Weed often and weed well, do not allow weeds to become established. A big mistake people make is to till the soil too deep. We recommend shallow tilling at 1 inch or less.

Albion* U.S. Plant Patent #16,228Albion produces very large fruit that is mostly coni-cal, very firm and red in color. its flavor is very good for a day-neutral. To get the high yields it is capable of producing, this variety will need a stronger water-ing and nutrient program than any other everbearer. Wider plant spacing will deliver the largest berries. it is resistant to Verticillium wilt, Phytophthora crown rot, and has some resistance to anthracnose crown rot. Grows best in zones 4-7.25 for $11.95 • 50 for $19.95 • 100 for $32.50

Seascape Released by the University of California Breeding Program in 1992.This day-neutral has been highly successful for north-eastern growers for summer and fall production. The plants have the potential to be the most productive of any day-neutral. The berries are large, firm and have good flavor when picked ripe from the plant. zones 4-9.25 for $11.45 • 50 for $19.40 • 100 for $31.50

San Andreas* U.S. Plant Patent #19,975 San Andreas is a moderate day-neutral with a produc-tion pattern very similar to Albion. Plant vigor for San Andreas is somewhat higher than for Albion early in the season. Plant size throughout the fruiting season is similar to Albion due to its high and consistent produc-tivity. The fruit color of San Andreas is slightly lighter than Albion, and the two have similar post harvest characteristics. The flavor of San Andreas is outstand-ing and the plant has good disease resistance. zones 4-7. Available in limited quantities for 2014.25 for $11.95 • 50 for $19.95 • 100 for $32.50

Healthy berry plants require these important elements: Planting time. We recommend planting when soil temperatures exceed 40 degrees. One of the biggest mistakes is planting in cold and wet soils. As a rule, we recommend planting at least 2 weeks after the earliest date on the zone chart. We do not recom- mend fall planting in the northeast or midwest.

A sunny, weed-free location with at least a half-day of sunlight.

clean beds that are frequently weeded. We recommend every 7-14 days.

Well-drained soil. For poor drainage conditions, consider raised beds.

Proper soil pH. Matching soil pH to plant requirements can be a huge factor in your success. Sample the soil before planting and contact your local cooperative extension office for assistance.

Crop rotation. Avoid planting strawberries or raspberries in soils where previous crops have included strawberries, raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor the soil pathogens Verticillium, Phytophthora and nematodes and may affect your new plants.

Irrigation. Maintain proper moisture levels throughout the season and, most importantly, during the establishment period. Drip irrigation is imperative when planting in raised beds.

Read free planting guide 1-3 months before planting.

Plants will fail to flourish if roots are too deep or too shallow.

Pack soil firmly around the roots.

Do not plant near wild plants or plants whose origins are unknown.

Water well one to three times a week, not every day.

Avoid fertilizer burn by fertilizing only after plants are established.

Strawberry Planting TipsAvoid planting strawberries in soils where previous crops have included raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor soil pathogens, which may affect your new plants. Do not mulch using materials like decayed or wet leaves that tend to mat down and can smother plants. Do not renovate day-neutral strawberries.Spacing: Unless otherwise noted, plant 12 to 18 inches in the row, 3 to 4 feet between rows. Depth is important — see detailed planting guide. Roots should be planted straight down.Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.

Bramble Planting TipsAvoid planting the roots too deep. Do not plant green tissue culture plants until the danger of frost has passed.Your plants will come with one packet of Viterra Agrigel®. Use it at planting to help maintain moisture and establish plants with little stress.Spacing: For raspberries, unless otherwise noted, 18 to 24 inches for reds and yellows; 20 to 24 inches for blacks. Plant blackberries 3 to 4 feet apart. Between rows, leave 8 to 12 feet depending on machinery. Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.

Blueberry Planting TipsImPORTANT! A pH of 4.5 to 4.8 is required; 5.0 is too high! For best results, amend pH levels before planting and apply garden sulfur regularly. To establish plants successfully without prior pH adjustments, read our planting guide.Excessive sulfur can be toxic. Do not use leaves or sawdust as mulch. They inhibit hydration.Do not use fertilizer that contains potassium chloride.Do not fertilize at planting.Do not fertilize in late summer or early fall. This could lead to new growth, which is susceptible to winter injury and disease. Spacing: 4 to 5 feet in the row, with 8 to 12 feet between rows. Be careful not to plant too deeply.

Asparagus Planting TipsDo not add compost to soil until plants are growing. Spacing: 12 to 14 inches between plants, 3 feet between rows with furrows 8 inches deep. For heavier, clay-like soils, plant 6-8 inches deep. vERy ImPORTANT! Asparagus requires very sweet soil with pH 7.2. Use soil tests to check and maintain soil pH and phosphorous levels. Make soil pH adjustments before you plant, using lime.

Rhubarb Planting TipsWater well during excessive heat.Spacing: 3 feet; 5 to 6 feet between rows. Set buds about 1 inch below soil surface. Maintain a pH between 6.0 and 6.8.

Horseradish Planting TipsSpacing: 10 to 12 inches between plants, 3 feet between rows. Plant at 45-degree angle with flat end facing up; the flat end should be about 1 inch below the soil surface. Maintain a pH between 6.2 and 6.7.

We’ve had great success by giving berry plants and vegetables a

boost of Agrigel. Keep some on hand! 4oz. (for 400 raspberry

or 2,000 strawberry plants) $3.50; 8oz. $6.40; 16oz. $10.15

Frequently Asked questions

What is the best time to plant? Don’t rush! Waiting until the soil is warmer, above 40 degrees, and drier is best. The big-gest mistake growers make is planting in cold and muddy soil. As a rule, we recom-mend planting 1-2 weeks after the earliest date on the zone chart. We do not recom-mend fall planting.

What do I do with the plants if I am not quite ready? Plants are easily stored in the bottom of the refrigerator up to 1 week after arrival. Keep plants in the shipping bags and keep the bags sealed. Call us to delay shipping by the Friday before they are scheduled to ship. 90% of all orders shipped are loaded Monday morning by 9am. Do not store below 28˚F.

What is Agri-gel? Agri-gel is a polymer that absorbs many times its weight in water. it helps all plants get established easier, it is especially helpful for raspberry plants. We include a sample in every shipment that is enough for 25 straw-berry or raspberry plants.

What is tissue culture? Tissue culture is a propagation method that ensures virus and disease free plants. Since 1980, all of our planting stock begins as virus and disease free micro-propagated cuttings.

Why do Nourse Farms plants cost more?99% of our plants are either first or second generation from our tissue culture facility. Our plants set the bar for health and vigor.

Summer Bearing varieties produce fruit on second-year canes which are usually

pruned out after summer harvest.

Prelude* U.S. Plant Patent #11,747 Recently released by the Cornell Small Fruit Breeding Program in Geneva, nY.Prelude is identified as the earliest ripening sum-mer red raspberry, ripening in mid-June under new York conditions. Although Prelude is also fall bear-ing, it produces the biggest portion of its crop in the spring. Very winter hardy and vigorous, Prelude berries are round conic, coherent, with very good flavor. An excellent choice when early fruit and quality are required. Grows best in zones 4-8.5 for $17.50 • 10 for $26.75 • 25 for $52.00

Trellising raspberries is one of the most important cultural practices, but most people think it is too expensive and time consuming. A simple post with twine could increase potential harvests by 50%.

Prune summer raspberries soon after harvest ends. This will reduce disease pressure on new canes and increase production potentials.

Don’t plant where raspberries were growing for at least 2-3 years. Don’t plant too deep.

Read and keep our planting guide on hand. It will help you care for your raspberries for years to come.

Fall Bearing (Ever bearing) varieties produce fruit on fi rst year canes and are usually mowed

NTING TIPSGet a soil test for an accurate pH. A pH test kit may not be very accurate.

Blueberries can last for several decades if the pH is below 5.0 and they are planted with wood chips. Following our directions in the planting guide will greatly contribute to your success.

Mulch your blueberries every year with wood chips that are 3-6 months old. This will help keep weeds down and provide a great place for roots to grow. At maturity, six plants can feed a family of four for a year!

Do not use softened water on blueberries. The salts will hurt the plants.

Blueberries only utilize ammoniated forms of nitrogen. Do not use regular 10-10-10.

BluecropBluecrop is the leading commercial variety grown and is especially popular in new Jersey and Michigan. it produces high yields of large, bright blue berries that are firm and grow in large clusters. The berry flavor is superb, fresh or frozen. Bluecrop is known for its hardiness, vigor and con-sistent production. The plant grows to a height of 4 to 6 feet. Grows best in zones 4-7. 1-3 / $8.35 ea. • 4-9 / $8.00 ea. • 10-49 / $7.35 ea.

BluegoldBluegold is a mid-season variety that is highly productive, with superior-quality berries for mid-season. Fruit ripening is concentrated, with harvesting in one or two picks. The plant grows compact, spreading somewhat, and is cold hardy. Grows best in zones 4-7.1-3 / $8.35 ea. • 4-9 / $8.00 ea. • 10-49 / $7.35 ea.

ChandlerThis is a mid- to late-season blueberry plant with the largest berry of any available variety on the market today. Chandler will fruit over a period of 4 to 6 weeks and has very nice flavor. This new variety is vigorous, with a spreading habit of 5 to 6 feet. Chandler is probably not hardy enough for the more northern areas, but should do well in zones 5-7.1-3 / $8.35 ea. • 4-9/ $8.00 ea. • 10-49 / $7.35 ea.

DarrowHighly recommended for extending the blueberry season.Darrow is a late mid-season variety that produces large berries and is highly rated for its flavor. Purple Passion SOLD OUT FOR 2014This is a unique asparagus variety. its attractive purple color, milder flavor and tenderness distinguish this variety from others. in addition, our trials indicate Purple Passion has productive yields. For best per-formance, plant spacing for Purple Passion is 6 to 8 inches apart in the row instead of the usual 12-inch spacing. When cooked, the bright purple color is reduced, but when served fresh in salads it provides a colorful and flavorful accent. zones 3-8.

Pacific Purple NEW FOR 2014!This variety was bred by Dr. Peter Falloon from Aspara Pacific in new zealand. This new purple vari-ety is high performing, producing higher yields than Purple Passion as well as many of the green varieties. it is unique in the way it holds a deep purple color through the season and it is very tender with a sweet flavor, distinctive from the green varieties. As Pacific Purple produces especially large-sized spears, we rec-ommend planting the crowns 8 inches apart rather than at the usual 12 inch spacing. This practice will produce more normal-sized diameter spears. We highly recommend this variety. Grows best in zones 3-8. 25 for $27.00 • 50 for $47.50 • 100 for $77.50

Big TopWe have selected the strain Big Top for its size, vigor, wide adaptability and resistance to foliage diseases, rust and bacterial spot (all common problems in horseradish). abundantly for 15 to 20 years if given the proper care. Get ahead of the game

with our one-year-old asparagus roots, which meet the nursery standard for

two-year-old crowns. Growers have been impressed at how these bigger crowns

are jumping out of the ground sooner than others. The new hybrids resist

fusarium crown rot and other diseases that weaken asparagus plants.
