Deciduous Trees

Most deciduous trees will tolerate some shade but prefer sunny conditions which will greatly enhance foliage color

and blooming. Fertilizing in March and April will help provide needed nutrients and feeding may be done again in

November dormancy so that the tree can store it for spring growth. Care should be taken to time fall feeding well.

Feeding before dormancy could stimulate growth that hasn’t had enough time to prepare for winter’s hardships.

Pruning dead branches can be done at any time as dead limbs or branch tips will encourage disease and pests.

Drastic pruning should occur during winter dormancy when the leaves have fallen. Water regularly as the tree

becomes established to encourage deep rooting and water well during times of drought and again before winter sets

in.

Evergreens and Conifers

Evergreens, conifers and broadleaf evergreens provide year round interest in your landscape. When choosing plant

material, please keep in mind the mature size of your selection. There are many dwarf and miniature varieties

available that are perfect for both container plantings and rock gardens. We recommend adding peat when planting

as they prefer a well-drained acidic soil. Most evergreens have regular watering needs and benefit from a deep

watering once a week through Thanksgiving. Mulching will help to conserve soil moisture but should not be

mounded around the trunk. Fertilizer can be applied in early spring or late fall. We recommend a granular that can

be spread easily and watered in well. With the exception of the Eastern Arborvitae and Canadian Hemlock, most

evergreens and conifers are deer resistant.

winter months. The taller ornamental grasses can be used as a living screen and make a nice backdrop for perennials

and annuals. The shorter varieties such as carex and liriope can be used as a groundcover and look wonderful

planted under trees or used as a border. Grasses may be divided in early spring every 3-4 years. Fertilizer is not

normally needed as most ornamental grasses will find all of the nutrients they need in a typical garden soil.
