Northern Medical Program

Northern Medical Program graduate Nicholas Jawanda of Quesnel was the 2014 winner of the Joe Sidorov Award for Excellence in Internal Medicine. This year marks the seventh group of doctors to complete their training through the program. Northern Medical Program Regional Associate Dean and Vice-Provost Medicine at UNBC Dr. Paul Winwood says there are signs that having a program in the north is helping to meet the needs for physicians in rural areas in BC and across Canada. “We know from the results of national exams, feedback from the physicians across the country and the practice outcomes of our graduates that we are producing well trained, highly competent, committed, and rounded physicians who are successfully practicing in all fields of medicine,” Winwood said. More than two thirds of this year’s graduating students will be going into family practice residency and 16 of the 33 graduates are from Northern BC.
