SAND TRACKSSand Tracks will tour a professional band with an emerging band from the central desert region to a community near you. The professional bands that are available to tour are listed inside this menu. Please vote for the band you would most like to perform by ticking the box on the voting forms and faxing it through to 08 9200 6201.

Don’t worry - by voting you are not saying that you will take the show! We will talk to interested communities further down the track, at this stage we just want to know what bands you would love to see so that we know which ones to tour!

Once voting is completed Country Arts WA will talk to interested communities, coordinate the tour with local contacts and cover the touring costs. The tour including workshops will take place in September 2014.

The Sand Tracks program is made possible by the support of the Department of Culture and the Arts and been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body and the Mental Health Commission of WA, Healthway promoting the Act- Belong-Commit message and the Regional Arts Fund.

Blekbala MujikBlekbala Mujik’s music takes ancient knowledge and tradition and reinterprets it for the modern world. Mixing traditional song and instruments with synthesizers and modern production, Blekbala Mujik carries a message of reconciliation and shared dreams.

Formed in 1986 and led by Peter Miller (Apaak Jupurrula), Blekbala Mujik is one of the most successful bands to emerge from the top end of Australia.

Hailing from Burunga (Gulin-Gulin) in Arnhem Land, the band is cited in World Music: The Rough Guide as being next best known to Yothu Yindi. Blekbala found international acclaim with the release of its first full-length self-titled release, touring extensively overseas whist still maintaining a loyal and strong fan base throughout remote Central and Top End Australia.

Career highlights include receiving an ARIA nomination, playing to 20,000 people at WOMAD in the Canary Islands, Triple J ‘Live at the Wireless’ broadcast and winning the 1996 Deadly Sounds Album of the Year.

“…another Indigenous Australian group has risen to the challenge of the old white rock tradition…we feel like we are under the stars with them, dancing with painted faces …” BEAT Magazine

B2MB2M (Bathurst to Melville) is a six-piece band from the Tiwi Islands. Their music is high energy, positive R‘n’B pop style with a traditional twist to it. The lyrics in their songs come from life experiences growing up in an Aboriginal community and seeing first hand the effects of drugs, alcohol and youth suicide on their own people. Educating youth through music and encouraging people to make a change in their lives is what drives B2M.

In between developing a successful format for community workshop/concert tours, B2M have delivered performances all across the Territory, and represented Australia on the international stage in China, Indonesia and Timor-Leste. It seems that no matter where they perform, everyone loves their infectious music and inspiring dance moves!

Career highlights includes ‘Band of the Year’ at the 2012 Deadly Awards and winning the 2008 Emerging Act of the Year at the NT Indigenous Music Awards.

“B2M is one of the many contemporary faces of Indigenous Australia and are outstanding cultural ambassadors. They are proud representatives of their people and of their nation” Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Greg Moriarty

NoKTuRNLThis hard progressive rock band from Central Australia describes their music as rip-rock, mixing menace with melody and a message.

Since bursting onto the musical scene in 1999, these three-time winners of the prestigious Deadly Awards ‘Band of the Year’ have offered a fresh take on contemporary Indigenous music.

Forever evolving from incarnations of raw rock and new metal electronic to acoustic shows and the mature refined power ballads the NoKKerZ, as they’re known, show that muso’s from the centre mean business.

NoKTuRNL had a good year in 2013. Starting with some local shows in Alice Springs, the Blacken the Globe Festival, TerrorFest, a Territory tour and ending the year at the Woodford Folk Festival in QLD. This work and some media exposure has brought the band back into the spotlight as a premium live act in Australia.

With new material composed overseas and some old classics like their ode to racism Point Ya Finger, the NoKKerz live shows are sure to be an experience not soon forgotten.

WORKSHOPS AVAILABLE• Latin Drum Styles:

Doug Pipe, drummer and style guru explains and explores some of the cooler grooves that can be incorporated into modern music and blended to provide something new

• Metal In The Head: Craig Tilmouth examines heavy music and breaks it down to its basic elements. From speed guitar riffs and double kick drumming to arrangements and vocal techniques

• What It Takes: Damien Armstrong takes you through the music biz. From concept and image all the way through to marketing and contracts. Everything you need to know when you want to be in a band!

Tjintu Desert BandFrom Haasts Bluff/Ikuntji, 250km west of Alice Springs, Tjintu Desert Band are now one of the hottest bands in Central Australia. After their east coast tour last year, which saw them perform eleven concerts over four state - Tjintu Desert Band have a strong national following.

Since their first performance together at The Battle of the Bands in Papunya, they’ve gone by the name Sunshine Reggae Band. They were the stand-out band at Bush Bands Bash in 2010 and were then chosen to support Nabarlek on the 2011 Sand Tracks tour.

Their new name pays tribute to their former one by including the word “tjintu” - the word for sunshine in the Luritja language of their homeland, while allowing them greater freedom to expand their music.

Their new album Tjamuku Ngurra (meaning ‘Grandfather’s Country’) features a new direction for the band into funk/rock, while still recognising their desert reggae roots. It was released in March 2014, supported by a national publicity campaign led by AUM PR and distribution by MGM.

Warren H WilliamsOne of Australia’s favourite singer/songwriters, Warren H Williams has a powerful voice, strong messages, wicked sense of humour and gentle manner.

The three-time ARIA nominee, Red Ochre winner, Golden Guitar winner and Deadlys Award winner has been a professional musician for the past 20 years but says music has been in his blood since he was born in Central Australia. He and his dad are among the only father and son to have been honoured by making their mark in the Hands of Fame in Tamworth.

Warren toured for 15 years with John Williamson after they paired up to sing Raining on the Rock, which has become an anthem for reconciliation in Australia. This pairing changed Warren’s life as a musician. He went from performing in and around Alice Springs and his home of Hermannsburg in the Northern Territory, to performing under bright lights on international stages in America and New Zealand, as well as all over Australia.

Warren has released nine albums and played with the likes of the late Dr Jimmy Little, Greg Champion, Troy Cassar-Daley, Johnny Chester, Pixie Jenkins and Ted Egan.
