This is proving to be another year filled with many exciting activities and events in the sustained growth of the college.

We continue to strive to achieve the goals in our Build 2016 strategic plan: communication, student success, student engagement, resource development and partnerships. We endeavor to be the leading resource for accessible education, workforce training, partnerships and economic development for our region.

We are proud of the collaborative relationship between the SouthArk Foundation and the college which supports our efforts to achieve our vision. Through the interest, support and generosity of donors and benefactors like you, the foundation

is able to provide scholarships for students and to support college projects and programs.

In these pages we focus on the positive synergy achieved through collaboration. SouthArk is proud to partner with you and numerous community leaders, businesses and industries, districts, non-profit agencies and universities to meet the needs of the citizens of south Arkansas. We have leveraged the collective knowledge and resources of our partners to build new programs, secure educational resources, support students, develop campus projects and create relevant curriculum to meet the workforce and training needs of our businesses and industries. These partnerships have a significant and lasting impact on the economic success and quality of life of our students, workforce and community.

We thank our many partners for their ongoing support for SouthArk, our students, and our faculty and staff. Our success and achievements are accomplished, not by working alone, but through working together.

The year 2014 has been a very exciting time for growth and new initiatives for the SouthArk Foundation. Our original mission of funding support for scholarships continues to be a primary goal, although most recently, we have extended our fundraising efforts through creating partnerships in south Arkansas. Donors provided generous support for our flagship fundraiser the SouthArk Outdoor Expo, and our growing Evening With the Stars event.

William R. and Cacilia Heritage Plaza was the result of gifts from many generous donors who

recognized the value of this amazing green space and fountain-stage. Now, SouthArk has become a true college campus, a gathering place for our students and a cornerstone for the future development planned for El Dorado Festival and Events and our beautiful downtown El Dorado Main Street.

Another major initiative is the aggressive development of specialized workforce training programs to employ the next generation of workers in production and maintenance training in response to local industry needs. These efforts have been recognized by the Governor’s Task Force as a training model for workforce development and specialized training in process technology, industrial training and mechatronics.

William R. and Cacilia Howard Heritage Plaza was dedicated on Nov. 6, the culmination of three years of work by the SouthArk Founda-tion and its volunteers, and many more years of vision and history.

The substantial crowd in attendance that day reacted with oohs and ahhs upon their first look at the splashing waters of the plaza fountain, the centerpiece of the park, which also features trees, plants, flowers, brick-lined paths and ample seating.

The plaza is a bridge—not only physically, connect-ing the West Campus between points east and west as well as north and south, but also spiritually. So many generations of young people have been educated on this space, dating all the way back to prior to the Civil War. Many still remember it fondly as the home of El Do-rado High School.

Engraved bricks still are available for purchase to be placed at the plaza for $100.

A Beautiful Partnership

A state park operated by South Arkansas Community Col-lege, located on property provided by the El Dorado School District and cared for

by a dedicated group of volunteers, the South Arkansas Arboretum is an example of the beautiful creations that partnerships can produce—liter-ally. Open to the public throughout the year, it brings in individuals, families with children and pet lovers who explore its 13 acres of trees, plants, flowers and fauna.

In the fall, a new red maple tree was planted at the park in memory of longtime Arboretum Board Chair-man Mike Nolan.

SOUTHARK OUTDOOR EXPO

The SouthArk Outdoor Expo, an annual major fundraiser for the SouthArk Foundation, featured cool fall

temperatures.Held each September, the

Expo attracts visitors from a large area around El Dorado.

This year the event featured a photography contest, cooking contest, duck-calling contest and a 5K race, to go along with a number of live musical acts.

An accompanying food drive resulted in the donation of about 1,000 pounds of food to a local pantry.

Training PartnersFOCUSING ON MANUFACTURING


W hen area manufactur-ing industry leaders told SouthArk administrators five years ago about the need to replace retiring

workers from the Baby Boom gen-eration, the wheels were set in mo-tion for a deep level of partnership that benefits both the industries and the local economy.

What has blossomed from those early meetings is a model for workforce growth and corporate training, lauded by Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe and involving many area employers.

The City of El Dorado so believed in the importance

of this endeavor, and of the stewardship of SouthArk, that it paid for a $300,000 training unit currently installed at SouthArk’s East Campus, via econonmic development funds.

Area industry partners can send employees to the college for additional training and certification, and can hire SouthArk manufacturing program graduates knowing that they’ve been trained by exacting standards set forth by the industries themselves.

RAMP UP—Regional Advanced Manufacturing Partnership: Unleashing Potential—an initiative of the South West Arkansas

Community College Consortium, which includes SouthArk, was funded by an $8.4 million U.S. Department of Labor grant last year. Area industrial leaders were heavily involved from its outset and continue to provide advice, equipment and additional funding.

The college has added advanced welding, process technology and mechatronics programs due to industry demand.

It’s a symbiotic relationship: SouthArk provides a cost-effective way for students to get trained, for manufacturing partners to discover talent and for the whole region to benefit economically.

The G. Thomas Baumgardner Students’ Choice Faculty Award, established by Dr. Kermit Parks through the SouthArk Foundation, recognizes outstanding college faculty through a student vote.

Baumgardner died earlier this year, after years of commitment to SouthArk. He was once an instructor at the college and later, a member of its board.

Nursing instructor Peg Cole was selected for the award this year.

Winners receive a $500 check to be used for faculty development activities.

Dr. Kathy Harrell recently was honored as the 2014 Outstanding Alumna at SouthArk during

the Arkansas Community Colleges Annual Conference in Hot Springs.

Harrell, the vice president of Carl Albert State College-Sallisaw (Oklahoma) said, “My ties to community colleges run deep. I graduated from SouthArk, and have spent the past 20 years with CASC. At Carl Albert, I began as the tech prep specialist, and since have served in various capacities including faculty, division chair and vice president of academic affairs.

“I spent much of my time as a college student in the same shoes as many of our students: as a single mom,” she said. “I had the responsibilities of a family while holding down a job and earning my degree all at the same time. Because of this, I understand the commitment it takes for our students to attend college.

“I also understand and appreciate the benefits our students receive upon graduation from Carl Albert State College. It’s not easy to balance day to day responsibilities while being a student, but it is worth it.”

Along with an associate’s degree, Harrell has a bachelor’s degree from Southern Arkansas University and both master’s and doctor’s degrees from the

University of Arkansas.Harrell lives in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, and is active in

many community organizations including the boards for Sallisaw Main Street and Help in Crisis. She is a member of several local organizations dealing with victims of crime. She also serves on the state level as the secretary for the Council on Extended Campus Administrators and is a member of the Economic Development Council for the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, serving as co-chair of the Business Partnership Luncheon Committee.

Harrell is an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church of Sallisaw and of the GY Chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Organization Sisterhood. She has three children: Jeremy Ibert (daughter-in-law Kim and their two daughters Bekah and Annalee) of El Dorado; Elisabeth Ibert Roop (son-in-law Sam and their sons Aiden and Tate) of Edmond, Oklahoma; and Lindsey Ibert of Oklahoma City.

Harrell concluded, “Community college serves a vital role in the education process,” Harrell said. “For our students attending right out of high school, community college is a valuable transition. Students receive a quality education at an affordable price, and they learn how to be successful before transferring to further their education or joining the workforce.

“For our students who have been out of high school for years and decide to start or return to college, we are right here where they can continue their lives while earning their degree.”(Sequoyah County Times)

South Arkansas Community College Phi Theta Kappa President Kimberly Tucker was selected as this year’s Academic All-Star at

SouthArk and was recognized at the annual conference of Arkansas Community Colleges in Hot Springs over the summer.

A teacher education major who has a 4.0 grade-point average, she

also was chosen as a 2014 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar. This scholarship is designed to provide new Phi Theta Kappa members with financial resources to help defray educational expenses while enrolled in a two-year college.

Tucker intends to transfer upon graduating, and would like to teach at the college level one day.

Stepping Stones, a college program for young adults with varying abilities, received funding earlier this year in the form of an Innovation Mini-Grant from the SouthArk Foundation.

The grant was used to create and plant raised gardens for student learning and the community on the West Campus. Students planted and cultivated raised gardens that included flowers, fruits and vegetables.

The Innovation Mini-Grant fund targets unique efforts for learning experiences brought by SouthArk faculty for the benefit of students, and encourages progressive thinking and teaching techniques.

One by one they filed in, perhaps moving a bit slower than they did on the battleships and battlefields of more than 70 years ago,

but none of them complaining.They were several among

the more than one dozen area World War II veterans who were featured in “Hands That Formed a Nation,” a documentary produced by SouthArk’s performance and media arts program, who attended a reception hosted by the SouthArk

Foundation on Veterans Day at the El Dorado Conference Center.

The film, which chronologically documents the war through personal stories, premiered immediately after. It has been entered into several film festivals.

The Blue and You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas, a charitable organization established and funded by Arkansas Blue Cross and

Blue Shield, awarded SouthArk a grant in the amount of $139,211 in January.

This funds the college’s Healthy Communities program, which

provides educational opportunities to incumbent and future health-care providers, community residents and health science partners in the college’s service area.

The year 2014 has been a record year for the SouthArk Foundation receiving gifts at all levels. Our

many donors have provided incredible support that help many students reach their aspirations of attaining a quality education.

The foundation exists to help students go to college, grow in their academic careers and graduate. For each dollar we receive, students’ get one step closer to achieving the
