2013-2014 RevenuesDuring the 2013-2014 school year, our parish school operated with a budget of $1.3 million. That represented a cost per student of approximately $5800. Tuition paid by school families accounted for slightly more than half of per pupil costs. Our school community is thankful for the generosity of the parish through their contributions which helped support approximately one-third of our parish school budget.

2013-2014 ExpensesWith the support of the St. Charles Parish School Auction, we could make some major campus upgrades in technology. About 10% of our expenses went into upgrades in security, wireless connectivity, and other improvements. About two-thirds of our expenses is spent on the salaries and benefits of our dedicated staff. Other expenses include financial assistance from the school to families desiring a Catholic education for their children but who could not attend without it.

4 2014 ANNUAL REPORT

Standardized assessments are one measure St. Charles Parish School uses to determine student attainment levels in subject-area proficiency. Results of these assessments, together with other information gathered regarding student performance, is useful in support of curriculum and instructional planning and provides one standard of school accountability.

St. Charles strives to have all students understand educational content at a proficient or advanced level. Proficient is considered demonstrating a solid understanding of challenging subject matter and solving a wide variety of problems. Advanced is considered demonstrating a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of rigorous subject matter and providing sophisticated solutions to complex problems. We also understand that standardized assessments are just one piece of information in evaluating each student’s knowledge of academic subjects and must be placed in context with other facets of a student’s education.Te

2013-2014 Iowa Test of Basic Skil ls ( ITBS) – Grades 3, 5, 7The National Percentile Rank (NPR) is the number used to show how our students compare to students of similar age across the country. There are four main portions to the ITBS: The English Language Arts test contains four (grades 5 and 7) or six (grade 3) subtests. The Math test contains two subtests. The Science test and Social Studies test follow. The compilation of these four tests result in a complete composite score. The chart below breaks down those results. Scores may be similar across grade levels, but the tests adjust for expected gains.

6 2014 ANNUAL REPORT

Our community is a crucial part of St. Charles Parish and School. Our dedicated and energetic parents work together to advance our school mission. The Home & School Association consists of parent volunteers who coordinate communication between St. Charles families and school, raise funds to benefit the school, and foster a feeling of community within the parish and school. Each parent volunteers for events of their choice to encourage this sense of community and to reach fundraising goals. The impressive list of events, services, and initiatives accomplished each year show that our school parents are true partners in their children’s education.

The 2014-2015 school goals have been set by the staff working in Professional Learning Teams. The purpose of the teams is to set school goals and advance teacher knowledge in a specific study area. This knowledge is shared with school staff through Professional Development time. The teams have set yearly school goals and will research, study, and reevaluate the goals throughout the school year. The teams are studying:

Catholic Identity Goals•   The Professional Learning Team presented a school-wide

discipline model this year that supports all students and staff working, learning, and playing in a compassionate atmosphere. The behavior plan has been implemented and will be evaluated to make any necessary changes.

•   The Professional Learning Team and school staff have put much effort into activities to support our Catholic Identity. Staff member Deacon Allen Olson not only teaches religion and music classes, he also presides at school masses. Fr. Patrick, Fr. Ken, and seminary students regularly meet with all school classes. Students in grades 3-8 take part in Eucharistic Adoration monthly. Students also take part in many service activities to support the Catholic mission of the St. Vincent De Paul on-site food pantry, our local seminarians, and other Catholic charities.

CurriculumA recent report establishing national standards and benchmarks for effective Catholic school education noted that “curriculum and instruction for 21st century learning provide students with the knowledge, understanding, and skills to become creative, reflective, literate, critical, and moral evaluators, problem solvers, decision makers, and socially responsible global citizens.”1 To that end, St. Charles Parish School is devoting significant resources to enhancing its curriculum to meet the challenge established in these standards. Recent curriculum initiatives include:•   Organizing the school teachers into curriculum development

teams and providing additional half days, once a month, during the 2014-2015 school year for the teams to create enhanced curriculum

•   Launching  a  new  reading  program  in  Kindergarten through Second grade called “Superkids,” — a research-based comprehensive reading and language arts program with phonics at its core

•   Creating a new “Mastery Level” of our Rosetta Stone World Languages Program for middle school students, intended to position students for success in high school French and Spanish courses

Project Lead the WayBeginning with the 2014-2015 school year, St. Charles became a Project Lead the Way (PLTW) school at the middle school level. Project Lead the Way, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, is the leading provider of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education programs used in schools nationally, and St. Charles is the first western Waukesha Catholic School to adopt its curriculum. Over the summer, three of our middle school teachers attended professional development training at a local college designed to help prepare them to teach PLTW courses this school year. PLTW curriculum is hands-on, project-based learning organized into nine-week units designed to spark interest in STEM subjects and prepare students for further study in high school.

St. Charles offers an athletic program open to all  fifth  through  eighth  graders  in  the  parish. Through the stewardship of the St. Charles Athletic Association and the dedication of the many school parent and parishioner coaches,

our students participate in competitive team sports that model Christian values, teach fundamental skills of the games, and foster good sportsmanship and teamwork. We participate in the Waukesha Area Catholic Conference (WACC) and the Metro League. New for 2014, we further invested in our already exceptional Recreation Center by adding two Pan, Tilt, Zoom Cameras that can be used to record various athletic and other events held in the gym. To foster school spirit, a cheerleading team has been formed for school athletic events.
