Kurt Ramler was announced the second Head Football Coach in St. Scholastica history on March 31, 2014.

Ramler comes over from his Alma Mater of Saint John’s University where he spent the 2013 season as the Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator. Prior to his stop at Saint John’s, Ramler was the head football coach at Carleton College for six seasons where he was named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Coach of the Year in 2008. During that season, he led the Knights to a 7-3 record, their best since the 1992 season.

Other coaching stops for Ramler include the Offensive Coordinator and Head Golf Coach at Heidelberg University (Ohio), Wide Receiver’s Coach at FCS Wagner College (N.Y.) and Quarterback/Wide Receiver Coach at Division III’s Hamilton College (N.Y.).

At Saint John’s, Ramler played for legendary head coach John Gagliardi from 1993-96. As quarterback, he was a two-time All-MIAC selection, including being named the conference’s Most Valuable Player in 1996. He was also a second team Academic All-District selection in 1996.

In 1996, he was named a finalist for the Gagliardi Trophy, which is handed out to the Most-Outstanding Division III Football Player. He holds the top three Johnnie records for passing yards in a game and is second in career passing yards and career touchdown passes. He won 27 games in his time as starting quarterback, which is tied for the second-most in program history.

“I believe Scholastica is a great fit for me because the college offers what I believe Division III athletics are all about; a great community, a great education, and a great experience,” described Ramler. “Part of the allure for me is the historic tradition established by the Benedictine sisters here at Scholastica; years ago they built an amazing college comprised of amazing people. We hope to build a football team that reflects that tradition.”

Ramler earned his Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature from Saint John’s and earned his Master’s Degree in Education from Wagner.

George Penree was named the new Defensive Coordinator under Head Coach Kurt Ramler in April of 2014.

Penree comes over from Utica College (N.Y.) where his duties included Assistant Head Coach, Offensive Line Coach, Tight Ends Coach and Recruiting Coordinator from the 2008 season through the 2013 season. While at Utica, he was twice nominated for the AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year award.

Other stops, previous to Utica, including a year at Waldorf College (Iowa) and three seasons at Heidelberg College (Ohio), where he coached with Ramler.

Penree, a Utica native, earned his degree in Communication/Journalism from St. John’s Fisher College (N.Y.) in 2003 and earned his Master’s in Education from Heidelberg in 2006.

During his playing days, Penree was a four-year member of the St. John’s Fisher offensive line and served on the Leadership Council his junior and senior seasons.

Penree is married to his wife, Sherry.

Mid-America’s gateway to the sea, Duluth’s harbor hosts ships from dozens of nations each year. Duluthians enjoy the beauty and sport of four seasons. In close proximity to the College are beaches, biking and jogging trails, ski resorts, cross-country ski trails, boating and fishing sites and rinks for skating, curling and hockey. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is close enough for week-end visits.

Duluth offers a wide variety of cultural activities as well. Each year the city’s auditorium hosts a long list of popular entertainers. The Minnesota Ballet, Duluth Playhouse, and Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra provide exciting year-round schedules. Duluth’s many historical attractions include Glensheen, a 39-room neo-Jacobean style mansion built on the Lake Superior shore, the St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center, and the Marine Museum at Canal Park.

Duluth’s low crime rate, high quality of life and natural beauty frequently earn it high rankings in “best places to live” surveys. Recently, the nonprofit American Institute for Economic Research ranked Duluth one of America’s best small metropolitan areas for college students.

In June 2014, Duluth was voted “America’s Best Outdoor City” by Outside Magazine

The Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the long-time athletic director of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedication to the conference and its student-athletes. The annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the place-finishes of the college’s athletic teams in the final standings of the 17 conference-sponsored sports.

(1) Most amount of points = Kruse Award Winner

(2) Points are determined by the number of teams participating in that particular sport. First place points will be given equivalent to the number of teams competing in that particular sport. Second place, third place, etc. in descending order.

EXAMPLEIf there are 8 teams competing = 1st place gets 8 points, 2nd place gets 7 points, 3rd place gets 6 points, etc.If there are 5 teams competing = 1st place gets 5 points, 2nd place gets 4 points, 3rd place gets 4 points, etc.

(3) Provisionary schools and associate members are not eligible for Kruse Award and are not considered in awarding points for regular season finishes

(4) If two or more teams tie for the same regular season finish spot, the point value for their corresponding finishes are added together and divided by the number of teams tied, which is then awarded to all of the tied teams. Example - If there is a two-way tie for first place, you would add 8+7 and then divide by 2 so that each team receives 7.5 points

vs. Saints No Match for RoyalsMINNEAPOLIS (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica football team stopped sixth-ranked bethel University once in the first quarter and the only other time was at the end of the game as the Royals ended the Saints’ season by a score 70-13 on Saturday at Mall of America Field at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

The location of the game was changed from bethel’s home field to the Metrodome on Wednesday due to the possibility of a sub-zero wind chill.

bethel received the opening kickoff and drove the ball right down the field. Brandon Marquardt capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge to make it 7-0 less than three minutes into the contest.

After the teams exchanged punts, the Royals added to their lead with 1:21 remaining in the opening quarter as Erik Peterson found Jay Hilbrands for a 16-yard TD reception to make it 14-0. The Saints would then fumble the ensuing kickoff and the Royals capitalized on a Marquardt 5-yard TD run. Bethel then faked the extra point and converted the 2-point conversion to make it 22-0 at the end of the first quarter.

bethel out-gained CSS 147-20 in the first quarter.

It only two plays on the ensuing drive for the Saints to get their first points as Tyler Harper found Cory Gebhard for a 41-yard reception. The next play Harper found Shannon James for a 26-yard touchdown to make it 22-7.

The Royals responded by a converting a pair of third-and-longs and Marquardt scored again, this time from 4 yards out to make it 29-7. After the Bethel interception was returned to the CSS one-yard line, the Royals made it 36-7 on a 1-yard TD plunge.

The Saints scored their second touchdown on the game when Harper found Gebhard for a 23-yard touchdown. The point-after failed and the score was 36-13. However, Bethel scored right before halftime on another short TD run to make it 43-13 at halftime.

The Royals out-gained the Saints 288-131 in the first half, including 118-22 on the ground. Erik Peterson was 14-for-16 passing for 170 yards.

The second half would be all bethel. The Royals would score on their first four possessions in the half and held the Saints scoreless to make the final score 70-13.

Harper was 13-for-24 for 131 yards and two touchdowns, but also had two interceptions. James had three receptions for 46 yards and a score. Jake Jensen ran for 37 yards, falling three yards shy of 3,000 yards for his career. Xavier Rhodes led the defense with 15 tackles.
