Celebrate New London! 3.

Hello “Celebrate New London Day” Visitors,

I want to thank you for attending this great event and supporting the continued partnership between the City of New London and the United StatesCoast Guard.

New London and the Coast Guard have enjoyed a close relation for over a century and it continues to get stronger. The City of New London isproud to be the home birth of the United States Coast Guard Barque Eagle, America’s tall ship. New London has also enjoyed great communitysupport from the Coast Guard Academy through their work with Habitat for Humanity.

These efforts are just some examples of the partnership between the Coast Guard and New London and it is only going to continue to get stronger. New London is proud that theNational Coast Guard Museum is coming to downtown New London, and the City is working with the Coast Guard to make New London a national “Coast Guard City.”

Thank you for attending this event and enjoy the day at this great New London institution.

Sincerely,

Daryl Justin FinizioMayor, City of New London

Dear Fellow Members of the New London Community,

Welcome to Cadet Memorial Field at the United States Coast Guard Academy! We are excited to have you join us in celebrating New London, andexperiencing Bears Football as we face the Seahawks of Salve Regina.

As a federal service academy we emphasize leadership, professional development and physical fitness. On our playing fields cadets learn firsthandthe value of teamwork and dedication, and they carry those lessons with them in service throughout the nation and the world. Upon graduation, ourcadets go directly into positions of leadership in service to others. That spirit of service is something that starts right here in New London with local community service.

The Coast Guard Academy community is part of the New London Community, and we have been for over 100 years. Our relationship with the people of New London andour partnership with the City is very important to us. So please join us in cheering on the home team of cadet-athletes as they resolve to be worthy of the traditions we havecelebrated right here for so many years. GO BEARS!

Sincerely,

Sandra L. StoszRear Admiral, U.S. Coast Guard

Dear Celebrate New London Communities,

The over one hundred year connection between the City of New London and the USCGA is a partnership to celebrate. We all do that today in aspecial way. Special in that we celebrate through the students of the New London Public Schools.

The Academy is an inspiration as an institution. This inspiration shows through its cadets and graduates.

Today, through the USCGA's Partnership in Education Program (PIE) and other educational initiatives, the Academy also inspires our young NewLondon students. It inspires them to think of, "what may be". To think if I work hard in school, I will also achieve in the area I choose.

Through family, especially my uncle CAPT Paul Foye USCG (Ret), I, as a young New London student was fortunate to experience the CGA inspiration. We are happy toprovide this to our NLPS students today.

The New London Public Schools is, indeed, proud and honored to celebrate our partnership with the USCGA and the inextricable link that exists between the Academy andthe City of New London.

Connecting New London& the Coast GuardTHROUGH OUR STUDENTSFor more than 100 years theU.S. Coast Guard Academyhas been central to life inNew London. It isn’t just anaddress for the men andwomen studying to serveour country, but a homeaway from home.Nobody benefits from this more than the children in theNew London Public School System. At any one time therecan be up to 100 Cadets enriching the lives of thestudents. Activities they participate in include:

• Academic Support• Mentoring• Role Models• Team Building Programs• Tutored High School Students• Helped with math and

science activities• Hosted students to audit classes• Invited students to the Academy

campus for field day eventsand activities

As the community is warmly welcomed into CadetMemorial Field, we will see how the Cadets of the CoastGuard Academy and the families of New London cometogether to cheer on the Bears. This is a fantasticopportunity for our student, their families and thecommunity to see what can happen when an institutionof higher education believes in their students beinginvolved in the community they serve.

Five days & four nights aboardCoast Guard Barque EagleFor the past two years, studentsparticipating in New London HighSchool’s Navy Junior Reserve OfficerTraining Corps (JROTC) have beeninvited aboard the 1936 tall ship – theirexperience while aboard the ship hasset the course for a lifetime of memories.

At a steady 14 knots, Bronson Carter - then a juniorat New London High School - climbed the rigging ofEagle and looked out. The sheer vastness of the openocean is something he says he will never forget.

“Being out there on the open ocean was life changing.I knew right then and there that that was my calling,”Carter wrote recently in a college essay.

The triple-masted 295-foot Eagle is used to trainCoast Guard cadets in team work. It has 23 sailswhen at full sail. Built at the Blohm + Voss Shipyardin Hamburg, Germany, in 1936, and commissioneda s Horst Wessel. At the close of the war, the shipwas taken as a war reparation by the U.S., and re-commissioned as the U.S. Coast GuardCutter Eagle and sailed to New London, which hasbeen its homeport ever since.

“(On Eagle) I learned that I love the ocean,” Carter,a high school senior, said. “Just being out there withno land in sight, depending on our ship alone wasreally rewarding.”

During the mid-August voyage, Carter and theapproximately eight JROTC students were assignedto day and nighttime watches. As part of the midnightto 4 a.m. watch, Carter would haul the sails to keepthe ship going at optimum speed and conduct basicmaintenance, although he said that during thedaytime watch was “where things got moreinteresting.”

“We would have to do look out using binoculars and aradio, and radio in if we saw ships or animals ahead inthe water. On one four-hour watch we would see easilysix or seven ships and pods of pilot whales about 100yards out,” he said. “When I got on the ship I was notsure what to expect, the racks where we slept were puny...We were assigned a mast and that mast would beassigned watches. We worked 12 hour days and it washard work.”

For Kate Ashbey, a junior enrolled in the Science andTechnology Magnet High School, the experienceaboard Eagle served as the catalyst to set her sightson applying to the US Coast Guard Academy.

“After I went on Eagle it changed my whole (college)focus,” the junior from Waterford said. “It was the

excitement aboard Eagle, staying close to home, thestructure of the program that made me want to apply.”

Assigned to the 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. watch, Ashbey wasable to take in the brightness of the stars and therising sun.

“The stars at sea are nothing like you see inConnecticut,” she said. “The stars were the first thingI told my parents about. Being able to see the starsand the sunrise in the same watch, it was just amazing.I could see millions of stars in the sky. It was reallyincredible,” she said.

Completing “out of the ordinary” tasks like patchingpipes and firefighting training were made possiblebecause of the teamwork exemplified on board by thecadets. Their spirit and encouragement made itpossible for Ashbey to step of out the box and outsideof her comfort zone.

“I went from thinking I was never going to be able tostep aboard Eagle to sleeping on it. I was able to dothings I had never done before and we had to worktogether as a team to do it,” she said.

Over the next five years, New London Public Schools will receive approximately $3million in Project Prevent federal grant funds, which will assist in providing students withschool-based counseling services, assistance in coping with trauma or anxiety, and conflictresolution.

New London Public Schools is the only school district in New England to receive thefederal grant.

The Project Prevent grant -which was also awarded to 22 school districts in 14 states-will allow the district to meet the needs of students directly or indirectly exposed toviolence. Grant funds will also be used to create a safer and improved school environment, which may include activities to decrease incidents of harassment, bullying, violence, gang involvement and substance abuse.

Currently, the district is in the initial stages of planning and researching the best ways toimplement the grant so that it will provide services for all of our students.

Kristina Jordan, the Project Prevent project director and the Supervisor of Special Servicesfor New London Public Schools, said that following the culmination of the five-yeargrant, she expects closer partnerships between students, parents, families and the NewLondon Public Schools community.

“I know that it (the result of the full implementation of Project Prevent) would be acommunity where there is a decrease in the types of incidents targeted by this grant …but to do this, and do it effectively, we have to partner with our district parents and thecommunity,” she said.In the next several months, Jordan expects to begin working closely with communityorganizations, parent groups and civic leaders.

This year’s award amounts to $613,131 and will allow the district to fund a schoolresource officer, three additional psychologists, a board certified behavior analyst, apart-time psychiatrist and to organize adventure programming.

These additional positions and programming options will benefit the entire school districtas it works to address the academic, social and emotional needs of our students.
