PRINCIPAL’SMessageDear Parents & Guardians,

Where has the term gone? It really does seem to be only 5 minutes since the half term break.

As always, it has been full of exciting opportunities for our students and for the staff and demonstrates the value we place on providing an all-round education for your sons and daughter – in and out of the classroom. This term has seen the greatest number of sporting opportunities and fixtures, as well as a host of other events organised by the staff at the college, and I would like to thank them on your behalf for the time and energy they put into doing this.

I am also very grateful for the parent support as I know that many of you spend a good proportion of your time as taxi drivers ferrying the young people around from one activity to the next. However I am sure that you will agree that a busy child is a happy child and the benefits of this will be appreciated - eventually!

I will confirm at this point that from next September we will be changing the school day to a consistent 8-40am – 3-25pm start and finish for every day of the week. This will allow for an internal structure of the day that maintains a constant pattern and also allow us to create some more curriculum time for the core subjects. I will give details of the internal structure of the day in the next newsletter when the details have been finalised.

We have appointed Miss Frayne to be the new Head of Modern Foreign Languages and Mrs Brooks as 2nd in the department. Ms Reed will be staying with us until the end of the academic year. Sadly Ms Wint has suffered a broken leg so will be off for some time but we are fortunate to have Mrs Anslow and Mrs Elliott taking her classes, both very experienced Science teachers.

Congratulations to Mrs Duffy who had a third son recently and both are doing well.

I hope that you have a very enjoyable Christmas holiday and all good wishes for a happy and healthy 2015.

Yours sincerely,

Jan Turner

YEAR 11 PROM

The Year 11 Prom is being held at Barnsdale Lodge on Saturday 27th June 2015 and this year’s theme, as voted for by the Year 11’s, is Hollywood.

The Year 11 Prom Committee is comprised of Alexa Smith, Erin Smith, Harry Boon, Robyn Burberry, Morgan Evans, Hannah Rhodes, Nieves Garratt, Lizzie Hulse, Harriet McWhan, Amy Barnes, Laura Haines and Ben Taylor. They (and others)

are currently working hard to raise money for this event to ensure that they can have the entertainment and the decorations that they want to make the whole evening as memorable as possible.

They have already held two Cake Sales and Sweets in a Jar competition and are well on their way to achieving their target. Future events will include a Year 7/8 Disco, Candy Canes for Christmas, Year 11 Leg Waxing, and a Car Wash. This year’s Prom promises to be the best one yet!

FIELDTRIP TO NORFOLK

On Friday 3rd October the Year 11 Geography Students enjoyed a fieldtrip to the North Norfolk Coast to collect data for their GCSE Geography Controlled Assessment. The day involved a visit to Hunstanton – a new location for the Geography Department. The students

collected beach data and took photographs of the main coastal processes; and the coastal defences that have been built over the years to protect this seaside town.

The day began with a long bus journey; however, the weather was fabulous and gave us excellent opportunities to complete our fieldwork tasks. The coach dropped us at the very quiet village Old Hunstanton and we then walked along the beach to the more commercial and traditional seaside town of New Hunstanton. Here, students investigated the considerable sea defences and had time to enjoy the local delicacy of fresh fish and chips. It was a fabulous day that enabled us to complete our Geography work; and allowed the students to sample the joys of the Norfolk Coast. The students had a very successful day and they have since written up their Controlled Assessment Investigation in Geography lessons.

POETRY BY HEART

Good luck to the following Year 10 & 11 students who are taking part in the school contest of the national ‘Poetry by Heart’ competition: Lucy Collins (11ASH); Jess Berridge (11ED); Fay Wilkins (11ED); Rhys Hill (11ED); Amalie Meadwell (10CH).They are busy preparing and practising their two poetry recitals, focusing on reciting from memory, voice and articulation and showing evidence of understanding. The winner of the internal competition will go forward to represent UCC at the regional contest in March.

MP6 POLITICAL SPEAKING COMPETITION - YEARS 8 & 9

Calling all budding politicians & public speakers in Year 8 & 9!

Following Alfie Finch-Critchley’s (9TB) success in this regional political speaking

competition last year, we are launching the competition again this year and hope to encourage lots of Year 8’s & 9’s to take part. Students will be challenged to speak for 1.5 minutes about a political issue that interests you and must prepare to answer a range of questions regarding current topical issues. The competition will launch in January so Year 8 or 9 students with an interest in political issues and a desire to develop their public speaking skills, should speak to their English teacher for more information. Come along and give it a try.

YOUTH SPEAKS

On 24th November, three Year 10 academics, Ben Hubbard, Morgan Severn and Tom Cocking competed at the club level of the Youth Speaks competition. The annual competition hosted by the Uppingham Rotary Club was held at the Falcon Hotel and was well attended by 4 teams from different schools including Catmose College and Uppingham School. This is the second year this UCC team has participated.

The team spent weeks preparing with the help of Mrs Maloney-Smith. The topic was

‘Social Media: the good, the bad and the selfie.’ Tom introduced the team and topic of social media. Then Morgan presented the main argument focussing on how social media has changed teens’ social skills. He answered a challenging question on how society can help develop a teen’s social skills whilst living in a vastly growing technological age. Ben summarised the main argument then elaborated on how social media can positively benefit teens if used effectively. The team was praised for the relevancy of their topic, attention to detail and depth of research. In a very close competition, UCC was proudly placed second.

LUNCHTIME BUSINESS SPEAKER SESSIONS

What have Hannah Macleod of Coulson Macleod; Emma Robson of Bat & Bottle in Oakham; Chris Rawlins of Chris Rawlins recruitment got in common? They have all been to speak at UCC recently. Year 10 and 11 students have had the opportunity to hear about topics including growing a business using social media, how to give good customer service and also what help is available when starting a business. If you are able to come and speak to students about the business you’re in, please contact Mrs Hirst at UCC. [email protected]

INVESTMENT CHALLENGE

Students from Years 9, 10 and 11 have been taking part in the IFS Student Investor Challenge, which requires teams to invest £100,000 of virtual money in stocks and shares online. Their portfolios track the real

time stocks and shares markets and the team with the most money by the end of January 2015 could win a trip to New York! Competition here at UCC is fierce amongst 18 teams (including two staff teams who are sadly not eligible for prizes). So far Team AlphaBuddy are coming out on top with their portfolio consistently in the top 500 out of 7000 teams across the UK.

THE YEAR 9 G&T INTER-SCHOOL COMPETITION

QWERKY PHYSICS 2014

SponSored by

Over 20 schools arrived at UCC on the 4th July and took over the sports hall. The teams of students had to complete five short experiments and two longer Investigations. They then had to produce a poster on the science behind their favourite experiment which was judged. The students who produced the best three posters then had to present them. At the end of the day a “Wow” lecture was presented by sixth form students sponsored by the Ogden Trust. All the students came away with certificates and prizes.

PHYSICS MASTER CLASS

Four Year 11 students (Lucy Wright, Harry Clarke, Sam Williams and Karl Bennett)

went to Oxford University in the summer term to take part in a physics master class. They stayed at St Anne’s College, Oxford. They attended two lectures one on ‘Lasers Science’ Dr Ceri Bremner, and a second on Nuclear Fusion. There were also master classes on levitation, spectra, we are stardust, exploring light and age of the universe. Students worked in the physics laboratories. They visited the Fusion Science Centre at Culham and were taken on a tour of JET. This gave them a fascinating insight into the problems that have to be overcome to make nuclear fusion a viable energy source. In-between all the lectures, master classes and visit they had to produce a poster which was to be printed professionally. The students were then questioned on their chosen topic. They were complimented on the depth of their knowledge and their explanations of some

very complex physics.

YEAR 9 ENRICHMENT

Four Year 9 students have spent their enrichment lessons putting together a science road show suitable for primary school students. The theme running through the road show is air. The students carry out a number of demonstrations which include firing rockets, balloons and bubbles. The science behind each demonstration is explained.

Their first performance was at Uppingham Church of England Primary. The children really enjoyed the show and asked lots and lots of questions.

Well done to Ben Cowan, Henry Doe, Nathan Hall and Adam Kilby.

KODUKUP NEWS

During the June term in 2014, 3 students - Joseph Banerjee, Alfie Finch-Critchley and Jonathan Haley took part in the Kodu Kup. These students had to design and develop a game using various programming and problem solving skills. Their game was entered into the Microsoft Kodu Kup and they were announced to be the finalists. They won the competition in June and won a place in the European Kodu Kup Finals.

The students represented the whole of the UK in the programming competition and visited the Microsoft Head Quarters in Belgium. To help with the preparation and the communication, they were allowed to invite another student along. Matthew

Mustard was now part of the team and was the glue that held the team together. He blogged about their experiences and updated the twitter feed regularly. He was very helpful to the team and a major part of their success.

During their time here they would have to develop their game, their pitch and they would have the opportunity to use some new technologies. Students were able to use Lego robots and to work in teams to make other games. They developed their teamwork and their design skills here and have learnt to build relationships with other countries.

During their visit they were taken to a chocolate museum to see how Belgian

chocolate is made and they also had the opportunity to work with many organisations. All students were interviewed by the local and national press. Alfie even had an interview with the European Commissioner about computing in Europe.

During this time, they managed to meet up with other students from Lithuania, Denmark and many other countries. They have shared contact information and continue to communicate with these students today.

They presented their game to the Judges and they even performed a song. The judges were very impressed with the marketing and merchandise. They thought that they were very professional and well spoken. The tweets were also very complimentary about the students.

We’re pleased to announce that Uppingham Community College achieved 2nd in Europe. With this they were awarded a trophy each and have the accolade of being the ‘Masters of Kodu’. They’re looking forward to other opportunities and will be looking at entering the Bafta’s next year.

Mr Chambers said that he was very proud of all 4 boys. They did a fantastic job of representing the school and were a joy to supervise. Since the event Andrew Lewer MBE MEP has written to the boys to express how much the boys impressed him. He loved how innovative and stimulating they made their presentation.

From all of us at UCC, congratulations.

MUSICAL NEWS

Our musicians have been busy throughout the term performing in a number of different places. The term started with a performance in the Uppingham Market Place at a Classic Car event. Whilst there were few members of the public about in the post lunchtime slot, Connor Rammage and Gregory Durden performed guitar and vocal duets interspersed with solo singing items from Ben Cowan and Charlotte Tillson. The crowd that built up around them was very supportive and it was nice to see total strangers come up to them to thank them and give them praise.

The Year Seven students then put on their Showcase Concert. These concerts started last year and were designed to encourage musicians of all abilities to get up in front of a supportive audience and perform to their best. There was a good variety of music from ukulele and vocals to trombone solos to a full blown rock group. The showcases have proved to be very popular and I hope that we can continue these with a concert from each year group.

Our annual Presentation Evening also gives students a performance opportunity and this year was no exception. The Concert Band performed a March at the beginning of the evening, and this was followed by a vocal performance of “Rolling In The Deep” by Charlotte Tillson, and a Saxophone Jazz Trio featuring Matthew Mustard.

Lunchtime Concerts have begun again in the Drama Studio, and the first Showcase featured Connor and Greg once again. Following their performance in the Market Place they realised that they had the material to put on a lunchtime showcase and they kicked off the programme for the year. This was followed by a solo spot by Louis Peterson with some fine guitar and vocal work.

At the time of writing, musicians are preparing for their ABRSM instrumental exams on the 8th December. These exams will last from 9am until 5pm and we are pleased to be a centre once again for these exams as we host Primary students from the area as well as our own music students.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT

On the day that Santa was seen touring around Uppingham, students from UCC were performing their annual Christmas Concert at the Parish Church. Mulled wine and mince pies no doubt helped everyone get into the Christmas spirit from the start. The band played, the choir sang and soloists entertained. The thirty or so items on the programme were interspersed with readings and congregational carols supported by the college band, augmented by members of the Uppingham Community Jazz & Soul Band. As the vicar said at the start of the concert, our Celebration Concerts always help to get people into the mood for Christmas and surely the last two items alone would ensure this – ‘Winter Wonderland’ sung by Barnaby Williams in 7AJ and ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’ sung by Tess Davenport in 8DC.

Have a happy Christmas everyone.Year 7 showCase

During this term UCC sports teams have competed in a staggering 124 sports fixtures which is a new record! Teams have played in the Rutland and Melton Varsity League, County Cups, State School competitions and competed against Independent Schools. 4 of our teams have won their Varsity league competition with a further 5 teams qualifying to represent Rutland in School games competitions at County level. The U16 Rugby team have qualified for the knock-out stages of the County Cup with the U16 Netball team repeating last year’s achievement of qualifying for the Regional tournament.

As well as school fixtures pupils have enjoyed taking part in a wide range of lunchtime and afterschool clubs ranging from Archery, Squash and Equestrian Club to Climbing, Fencing, girls Rugby and Table-tennis. These are just a few examples of the

exciting extra-curricular opportunities which we provide. This term we have also run two very successful sports trips to Leicester Tigers and Nottingham Panthers Ice Hockey as well as starting a mentoring scheme for some of our pupils. In the New Year pupils can look forward to having more exciting fixtures, clubs, trips and competitions as well as the 42nd Sports Tour to Don Bosco.

Mr Lewin picks his Sporting Highlights from the Autumn Term

1. Teddy Wilson winning the British Karting Championship

12. Leicester Tigers Trip - The College ran the first of its annual sports trip across to Welford Road to watch the Leicester Tigers play Saracens in the Aviva Premiership on 16th November. Rainy conditions meant the game became a tactical kicking battle with all the points coming from penalty kicks. The teams couldn’t be separated and had to settle for a 21 v 21 draw. Look out for trips to the Nottingham Panthers, the British Basketball Cup Final, Leicester city and Leicester Foxes in 2015.

PERFORMANCE EDUCATION IN SPORT PROGRAMME (PES)

The PE Department have been working with

Uppingham School to provide mentoring opportunities to some of our more able athletes. The project is a result of the links which Mr Bourne and Mr Lewin have developed with Uppingham and has resulted in a range of fixtures in the following sports; Swimming, Archery, Netball, Rugby, Badminton as well as Squash Club. Ten pupils from years 8-10 have been selected to join the Performance Education in Sport Programme for 2014-15 which aims to support and develop aspirational athletes, and help them to maximise their sporting potential. The programme provides mentees with the knowledge and tools to manage their sporting, academic and other extra-curricular commitments, and to understand what it takes to maximise their sporting potential.

Pupils attend a range of workshops

throughout the year to further their sporting knowledge and have the opportunity to meet professional athletes. Each pupil is assigned a mentor who will meet with their athletes to support them through the programme. On the 12th of November UCC pupils attended the 1st workshop which was based around Effective Training Methods. The workshop was hosted by Sophie Hitchon the GB Hammer thrower who trains full-time at Loughborough University. Sophie is the current British record holder and London 2012 Hammer finalist. Sophie shared her knowledge on a range of training methods and techniques as well as recommending useful resources for pupils to use. It was an inspirational experience for UCC pupils who were able to learn from a professional athlete and take advice on how to improve their own training programmes.

THE FA JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEADERS AWARD

On Saturday 4th October Uppingham Community College ran its annual JFLA Course.

In total 18 UCC students attended this course which provides a basic introduction to leadership skills through Football. The course was a practical course and covered the following areas:

• How to get involved in football.• Assisting in the leading of football activities.• Refereeing • How to work with a team.• An introduction to different competition formats.

To complete the award pupils will have to undergo 4 hours of voluntary work in a football activity either through their school or local football club.

Most will complete their hours by helping the college host the Rutland Primary Schools Football competitions in the coming months.

They will also be delivering a Football Festival for our local Primary Schools on Friday 17th October here at UCC.

Pictured are the group with FA Tutor John Heathcote who delivered the 6 hour course in challenging rainy conditions.

THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD

Students undertaking this Award have been really busy training for and completing their Expeditions. We have had a record number of students participate this year in both Bronze and Silver Levels with a higher than average interest in Year 11 continuing on to Silver.

Well done to one Silver group who completed their Qualifying Expedition in the White Peak this past summer. We also have many groups waiting the start of the Expedition season to complete their Practise and Qualifying Expeditions, both at Silver and Gold. Over the coming months these participants will be gathering evidence to get their Award Sections completed. Hopefully 2015 will bring the college its highest completed Awards on record. Well done to participants, parents/guardians and staff for the hard work and support.

Students completed their Bronze Award: Rachel Cross, Sophia Dendias, Miles Petherick, Emily Grace Brooker, Toby

Williams, Thomas Ellis, Zelna Weich and Oliver Berridge.

Ex-students who have completed their Silver Award: George Robinson and Jacob Downing.
