The Big Island of Hawaii is tranquil, timeless, transcendent... in spirit, there is no place like it in the world. For sheer beauty, it is unmatched. A land of legend - where fiery volcanoes complement snow-capped mountains, lush rain forests flank ancient lava fields and rugged coastlines hug pristine beaches... this is the Island of Hawaii.
The Island of Hawaii is the youngest island in the Hawaiian chain and is also by far the biggest, providing a vast canvas of environments to discover a variety of unrivaled natural wonders. To avoid confusion with the name of the entire state, the Island of Hawaii is often called the “Big Island,” and what an appropriate name it is. Nearly twice as big as all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined, its sheer size can be inspiring.
On this island’s vast tableau, you’ll find everything from extravagant resorts and incredible golf courses to modest local towns and sacred Hawaiian historical sites, from the birthplace of King Kamehameha I to Hawaii’s first missionary church in Historic Kailua Village. This is also the home of one of the world’s most active volcanoes, the tallest sea mountain in the world at more than 33,000 feet, the most massive mountain in the world and the largest park in the state (Hawaii Volcanoes National Park).
From breathtaking white, black or green beaches to the state’s #1 visited attraction, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park – where Kilauea has been erupting nonstop for the last 21 years – to the best saltwater game fishing in the state, stargaze through the world’s largest telescopes on the Big Island at the observatory on snowcapped Mauna Kea, go horseback riding in lush green pastures, hike to breathtaking waterfalls, undersea caverns and alpine streams, black lava deserts and deep green rainforest, botanical gardens where house plants grow into towering trees ... one is sure to find something exciting! Boating remains a prime leisure and commercial activity, encompassing outrigger canoe racing, kayaking, sailing, cruising, parasailing, ocean rafting, and game fishing.
