UTAH Skiing SEASON OUTLOOKAfter three-straight second-place finishes at

the NCAA Championships, the Utah ski team looks forward to the 2014 season with optimism and ex-citement. Every returning skier for the Utes either skied at the 2013 championships or served as an alternate, and the year culminates in Utah hosting NCAA’s for the first time since 2000.

The Utes return six All-Americans - alpine ski-ers Andy Trow, Ana Kobal and Kristiina Rove and nordic skiers Niklas Persson, Sloan Storey and Anna Svendsen.

Utah graduated five All-Americans from last year’s team, most notably two-time NCAA Cham-pion Miles Havlick, but has a solid class of recruits who have been strong during fall training.

“Overall, we had a big turnover and a very large recruiting class in both alpine and nordic,” Utah Director of Skiing Kevin Sweeney said. “The main focus this fall has been getting this new group on board, understanding what college ski racing is all about, getting them focused on their academics, and getting them synced with the returning skiers.

“Although our team is pretty young, all of our returning skiers have either qualified for or attend-ed the NCAA Championships, so we have maturity and experience. We took a big hit in our graduat-ing class, but on a positive note, they were great leaders so the underclassmen were able to learn a lot. We certainly have guys who are skiing fast. The newcomers all have very good racing experience at a high level. I feel very good about our ability to compete at a high level. We will be on the podium throughout the RMISA season. We are talented in every discipline, and we have some depth, which is nice. It’s going to be a strong intersquad competi-tion to see who is going to end up making the NCAA team.”

Utah opens its season hosting the Pat Miller Invitational at Park City Mountain Resort (alpine) and Soldier Hollow (nordic), Jan. 4, 5 and 8. The nordic events will be held in conjunction with the US Cross Country Championships. Utah also travels

to meets at Montana State, Colorado and New Mexico, with the RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regional hosted by Denver from Feb. 21-22 before the Utes host the NCAA Championship March 5-8.

“The ski community is excited to come here and compete at the Olympic venues and courses,” Sweeney said. “It’s been a matter of timing and logistics for it to come to fruition. It’s going to be exciting.”

Alpine“We have an extremely strong group returning,”

said head alpine coach Jaka Korencan. “We have lots of talent and experience returning, and we also have depth. Not just that, but we had a strong recruiting class. This whole group is so cohesive and motivated to do well. We’ve had one of the best fall preparation seasons since I’ve been here. It’s been great to have skiers who are so passion-ate about both academics and athletics, because they can balance both well. I am excited to start the season.”

Sophomore All-American Trow leads the return-ing men’s skiers. He finished seventh at last year’s NCAA Championship in the slalom and finished among the top 10 four times during his freshman campaign with a victory in the RMISA slalom quali-fier.

Junior Tim Hribar and senior Eian Sandvik both served as alternates for NCAA’s last year and are both two-time NCAA qualifiers. Hribar finished in the top 12 three times last year, posting a career-high third-place tie in the giant slalom at the Utah Invitational. Sandvik finished in the top 20 five times last season with a season-high fourth-place finish at the New Mexico Invitational last year.

Utah has a pair of strong men’s alpine new-comers in Mark Engel and Joergen Brath. Engel was a two-year member of the US Ski Team who finished in the top 10 at last year’s US National Championships in the slalom and super-G. Brath has had strong finishes at the Norwegian National

Championships and has 13 top-10 finishes in FIS races this year.

“Mark and Joergen are freshmen, but they are far from inexperienced,” Korencan said. “Our men’s team has great team players and extremely hard workers.”

For the women, all three NCAA skiers return in All-Americans Kobal and Rove, as well as Jamie Dupratt. Kobal earned All-America honors in both the giant slalom (sixth) and slalom (fifth) and finished on the podium five times last year. Rove finished fourth at NCAA’s in the giant slalom and just missed All-America honors in the slalom with an 11th-place finish. She finished in the top 10 nine times last year.

Dupratt recorded five top-10 finishes last year with a season-high third in the giant slalom at the Colorado Invitational.

The women have four new faces on the team in Nora Eide, Chloe Fausa, Teagen Palmer and Lauren Samuels. Eide won three giant slalom races in 2013 with five top-10 finishes. Fausa was a member of the Norwegian National Team has had a strong start to her season already with NorAm Cup wins. Palmer is a transfer from Denver whose best finish last year was fifth in the giant slalom at the Denver Invitational. Samuels is a former US junior cham-pion in the super-G.

“Our women’s team went from three skiers to seven,” Korencan said. “Our recruits have the potential to contribute a lot in their first years and are all very talented.”

Nordic“Our defining feature this year is that we’re a

young team,” Utah nordic head coach Abi Holt said. “Everyone knows expectations are high. There are no upperclassmen to hide behind. I think it’s been motivating for the team this year. All of our returning athletes are solid skiers. Sometimes freshmen need an adjustment period, but I don’t have that feeling this year. They have all had at least one year of training and racing between high

UTAH SkiingSEASON OUTLOOKschool and college, and I think that makes a big difference in a racer’s maturity. If fall racing is any indication, it’s going to be a very competitive. I feel really good about the team right now. They work very well together, and I think that we are where we need to be right now. They have done an amaz-ing job managing their energy and obligations.”

Leading the men’s nordic returners is sopho-more Persson, who finished fifth in the 20-km free to earn All-America honors last year. He was in the top 10 in eight races last season and never finished outside the top 20. Sophomore Noé Bellet served as an alternate last season for NCAA’s and took 10th or better in eight races last year.

“Niklas and Noe were racing shoulder-to-shoul-der with Miles and Einar Ulsund last year,” Holt said. “I think they learned a lot and are hungry to step up.”

Sophomore Tucker McCrerey was also an NCAA alternate last year with a season-best eighth-place finish at the 20-km free at the Colorado Invitation-al. He represented the US at the FIS Nordic Junior Championships last year.

Newcomers for the men are Kevin Bolger and Oscar Ivars. Bolger is a two-time high school state champion and has had multiple top finishes in the junior ranks. Ivars has also been strong in the junior ranks for Sweden, including a third-place finish at the 2013 Junior World Championships in the 4x5 km relay.

All-Americans Storey and Svendsen return for the women. Storey finished fifth in the 5-km classic at NCAA’s last year and had five top-10 finishes during the season. Svendsen was 10th in the 5-km classic at NCAA’s last season. She had six top-20 finishes last year.

“Sloan, who was a freshman last year, has defi-nitely stepped up as a leader this year,” Holt said.

The Utah women have three newcomers, Anna-Lena Heynen, Madeleine Thorn and Josefin Nils-son. Heynen has had several top three positions in German Cup. Thorn finished in the top 10 in three races at the Swedish National Championships last year. Nilsson is from Sweden.

“Kevin and Anna-Lena have been with us through the fall, and have been right there with the upperclassmen in time trials,” Holt said. “Every performance measure we have indicates that they will have a great season for us.”

keviNSweeNeyDirector of Skiing10th Season at Utah

Kevin Sweeney is in his 10th season as Director of Skiing at Utah. He has recently led the Utes to three-straight runner-up finishes at the NCAA Champi-onships from 2011-13.

Sweeney has led the Utes to significant team and individual success. Utah won the NCAA West Regional/Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Associa-tion championship in 2012 and finished as the runners up in 2011 and 2013. The Utes were awarded the RMISA regular-season title in 2011 and 2012.

Individually, Miles Havlick was a two-time NCAA champion from 2012-13 in the 20-km classical race. He was a three-time Ski Racing Magazine Nordic Collegiate Skier of the Year, a two-time RMISA men’s nordic MVP and a seven-time All-American. Maria Graefnings won NCAA titles in the 5-km freestyle in 2011 and 2012. She was the 2011 Ski Racing Magazine Nordic Skier of the Year, FasterSkier.com 2011 Women’s Collegiate Skier of the Year, the RMISA’s Female Skier of the Year and the Women’s Nordic MVP.

Sweeney is in his fourth season of his second stint leading the program. His first stretch as the Director of Skiing ran from 2000-05. In nine seasons under Sweeney’s direction, the Utes have experienced a great deal of national suc-cess. He led the school to its 11th NCAA title in 2003, and Utah has finished second at the NCAA meet four times under his leadership. In his nine seasons as director, Utah has won 13 national titles and 48 athletes have earned All-America honors. In addition to Havlick and Graefnings, Henning Dynendel (10-km free and 20-km classic) Katrin Smigun (5-km freestyle and 15-km classic) and Ben Thornhill (men’s giant slalom) were all two-time national champions.

Sweeney has also coached Olympians Torin Koos (2002, ‘06, ‘10, ‘14), Kristina Joder (2002), Rowena Bright (2002) and Luke Bodensteiner (1992, ‘94) during their time at Utah.

As the leader of a program that is so rich in tradition and vying for the NCAA title each year, Sweeney emphasizes excellence in the classroom and on the racecourse. In the spring of 2013, all 18 members of the team were named to the Athletics Academic Honor Roll, while eight student-athletes were selected to the Dean’s List. Jeremy Elliott earned Academic All-District honors in 2013. The ski team won the athletic department’s 2011-12 Utes Cup, an annual team-by-team competition that awards points for academic and athletic per-formance, personal development (including attending Life Skills events), com-munity service, attendance at Crimson Games and SAAC/SAM participation.

Sweeney first became an assistant coach with the Utah ski program in 1991 and served in the role before being elevated to Director of Skiing in 2000. He is a three-time recipient of Utah’s prestigious Don Reddish Award (2003, 2011, 2013), which is presented annually to the coach of a sport other than football, men’s and women’s basketball and gymnastics who is deemed to have had the most successful season the previous year. Sweeney has chaired the NCAA Skiing Rules Committee and was also a member of the United States Ski and Snowboard Association’s Cross Country Skiing Committee. He was also an assistant on the U.S. Ski Team coaching staff at the World Championships in Ramsau, Austria.

Sweeney served as the National Director of Competition for Swix Sport USA from 2005 until returning to the U in 2010.

Sweeney skied collegiately at New Hampshire and represented the U.S. Ski Team in World Cup competition at Mountain Dell, Utah, and Biwabik, Minn. He graduated from UNH cum laude in 1985. An avid outdoorsman, Sweeney immensely enjoys the mountains and desert of Utah.

jAkAkoreNcANHead Alpine Coach9th Season at Utah

Jaka Korencan is in his ninth season as head alpine coach at Utah. He is in his 14th year with the Utes after beginning as an assistant in 2001. During his tenure, Korencan has driven the Ute alpine contingent to consistently be among the best in the country. His athletes have won seven individual NCAA titles and 27 skiers have earned All-America honors.

Most recently, Eva Huckova was the 2010 NCAA giant slalom champion. Ben Thornhill was a two-time men’s giant slalom national champion in 2003 and 2004. Also earning national titles was Jernej Bukovec (2001, slalom), Petra Svet (2001, slalom), Lina Johansson (2003, slalom) and Scott Veenis (2006, giant slalom).

In 2008, Tague Thorson, who finished the regular season as the top overall men’s alpine qualifier, became one of just a handful of alpine skiers (men or women) to reach the U.S. Ski Team as a collegiate skier.

Korencan was the RMISA’s Alpine Coach of the Year in 2012. Korencan helped lead Utah to the 2003 NCAA title, while the Utes have finished as the NCAA runner ups four times during his tenure.

Additionally, under Korencan’s guidance, the Ute alpine team has consis-tently delivered stellar academic results, achieving the highest average team GPA levels. In the spring of 2013, five alpine athletes were named to the Dean’s List while eight athletes were named to the Athletics Academic Honor Roll, earning at least a 3.00 GPA.

“Student-athletes at the University of Utah are getting extraordinary sup-port from the athletic department and the University itself,” he said. “The University provides student athletes an outstanding environment to develop their athleticism as well as gain a world class education. This team has a rich tradition of excellence, and I am extremely excited, motivated, and honored to lead this team to continued success.”

A native of Slovenia, Korencan earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sport science from Utah in 2004, and in 2007 he completed a master’s degree in sport psychology.

ABi HoLTHead Nordic Coach5th Season at Utah

Abi Holt begins her fifth season as head Nordic coach for the Utah ski team. Holt has helped coach the Utes to three-straight runner-up finishes at the NCAA Championships, with two skiers combining for four national titles.

He was a three-time Ski Racing Magazine Nordic Collegiate Skier of the Year, a two-time RMISA men’s nordic MVP and a seven-time All-Ameri-can. Maria Graefnings won NCAA titles in the 5-km freestyle in 2011 and 2012. She was the 2011 Ski Racing Magazine Nordic Skier of the Year, FasterSkier.com 2011 Women’s Collegiate Skier of the Year, the RMISA’s Female Skier of the Year and the Women’s Nordic MVP.

Holt was the 2011 RMISA Nordic Coach of the Year. She has coached nine athletes to All-America honors during her time at Utah.

Holt previously coached at the Hollyburn Ski Club in Vancouver, B.C., where she spent a year as the first-ever head coach for the club. She coached Holly-burn’s first four athletes who qualified for the National Championships and the first three athletes to be named to the B.C. Provincial Development Squad.

Prior to Hollyburn, Holt spent five years as the Assistant Nordic Program Director and Ski Coach at the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation.

Holt has coached six U.S. National Junior Champions and two national champions. She coached four winters in Europe with the U.S. Ski Team at the J1 Scandinavian Championships, Scando Cup, Europa Cup and World Junior Championships. Holt has also spent time training athletes in Sweden, Norway and New Zealand.

Holt, who hails from Sun Valley, Idaho, was a three-time national junior champion and a 17-time Junior All-American for the Sun Valley Nordic ski team. She was on the U.S. National Junior Development ski team for five years and spent four years racing at Dartmouth, earning All-America honors for the Big Green in addition to being a two-time team captain.

Luke pATTerSoNAssistant Alpine Coach1st Season at Utah

Luke Patterson is in his first season at Utah as assistant alpine coach.Patterson comes to Utah after coaching two seasons at Montana State,

spending last season as the head alpine coach. MSU finished ninth at the 2013 NCAA Championships.

Prior to Montana State, Patterson spent five years with the Sugar Bowl Ski Academy. He spent two seasons as the head J3 and J2 coach and the head strength and conditioning coach, coaching skiers between the ages of 13-19. Patterson was the 2008 USSA Far West Skiing Rookie Coach of the Year. He has also coached at the Treble Cone Race Academy and with the Banff Alpine Rac-ers and has worked with the Sky Tavern Adaptive ski program.

Patterson was a two-time All-America skier at Nevada. He finished fourth in the men’s slalom at the NCAA Championships in 2006 and was seventh in the men’s giant slalom in 2005. Patterson skied for the Alberta Alpine ski team. He was the recipient of the Cary Mullen Character Award in 2003.

Patterson, who is from Banff, Alberta, Canada, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in health ecology from Nevada in 2008. Patterson is working towards a master’s in exercise physiology.

The Donna Garff Marriott Honors Residential Scholars Community opened in September 2012, while the George S. Eccles Student Life Center is projected to open in December 2014. UTAH SkiingUTAH ATHLETICS HISTORY

The latest chapter in Ute athletics history began on July 1, 2011, when Utah officially became a member of the Pac-12 Conference. But Utah’s reputation as an athletics power was established long before it joined the “Conference of Champions.”

Football is 628-435-31 in its 119-year history. In the mid-1990s, the Utes evolved from a conference contender to a national force and they now play to sold-out crowds in 45,017-seat Rice-Eccles Stadium. The original “BCS Buster,” Utah is 2-0 in BCS bowl games with wins over Alabama (2009 Sugar Bowl) and Pittsburgh (2005 Fiesta Bowl). The Utes won nine consecutive bowl games from 1999-2009, tying for the second-longest bowl win streak in NCAA history and the longest since Florida State won a record 11 straight from 1985-96. Utah has finished in the nation’s Top 25 six times, including a No. 2 ranking in 2008 and a No. 4 finish in 2004. Men’s Basketball has thrived throughout its history, winning an NCAA Championship in 1944 and finishing as the NCAA runner-up in 1998. Utah, which also won national championships in 1916 (AAU) and 1947 (NIT), has advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 nine times. The Utes rank in the top 15 in the nation in all-time victories (1,685) and sixth in regular-season conference titles (29). Utah’s 27 NCAA Tournament appearances and 35 NCAA Tournament wins rate among the top 25 programs. Women’s Gymnastics boasts 10 national championships and eight runner-up finishes. Utah is the only school to qualify for all 32 NCAA Gymnastics Championships and has captured the most

Women’s Basketball has averaged over 20 wins a season since its start back in 1974-75. The Ute women have received 17 NCAA Tournament invites since 1982—advancing to the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight once. They have won 22 conference championships. Utah was the WNIT runner-up in 2013. The Men’s and Women’s Ski Team has captured 10 NCAA Championships, including five in the 1980s and three in the 1990s.
