The World Relief Canada Annual Report covers our fiscal year 2014 that ends June 30th. But forgive me if I reflect on the calendar 2014. This has been a year of constant upheaval. Natural disasters and conflict zones have filled our airwaves with despair and grief.

This can often have a negative impact on our ability to provide longer term, sustainable solutions to those suffering from the effects of poverty. However, you our faithful donors, have again responded with compassion and real purpose to bring hope in the midst of so much despair.

As it is with all charities, we couldn’t do the work we do without you partnering with us. And when you partner with World Relief Canada, you connect with so many other like-minded responders from all over the world. Everything we do involves a worldwide community of transforming love and compassion.

We work extensively with an intri-cate web of Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB), Integral and in-country church-based partners that release the resources you and institutional partners, such as Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), provide to efficiently and effectively deliver.

Looking ahead, 2015 sees us celebrate 45 years in His service. We will celebrate the goodness of God and the incredible stories of transformation and hope that have sprung from the midst of disaster, poverty and injustice. And we will recommit World Relief Canada to playing an even greater role in bringing people together to share redemptive and transformative love.

Join us In His service,

World Relief Canada represents the compassion of Jesus. For almost 45 years, we have worked through agriculture and food security, microfinance and disaster relief projects throughout the developing world. Our assistance is provided regardless of religious beliefs.

World Relief partners with local Christian organizations and churches in developing countries. Our partners work directly with the poorest people, helping them find their own solutions, cutting out the middleman and reducing costs.

World Relief Canada seeks to bring hope and transforma-tion to the lives of people who are living in poverty. In 2014, we operated in 12 countries by resourcing Christian partner organizations to work with their local communities so that they may find their own solutions to poverty and injustice.

We also work with partners in Canada to empower Canadians to be agents of change and work within their churches and their communities to respond to the relief and development needs of the world’s poor in the name of Jesus Christ.

All our programs responded to local needs and opportunities that unlock people’s potential to realize long-term and sustainable change for themselves and their communities.

250,751 The number of people reached with seed and animal inputs and agricultural and food security training.

The members of Mary’s farming group contribute their time to farm a plot of land together. This way, rural farmers, widows and those who don’t have enough money to purchase their own land can farm with the association. To get the best price for their crops, the harvest is sold together, and the profits are divided among the members fairly.

Says Anne Marie, “Now I am able to buy salt and pay the school fees of my three children...I thank the Lord because I have forgotten all the problems I was facing.”She continues,”From today onward I will call this variety of Irish potatoes ‘World Relief’, because for me, they are the solution to all my problems. I will never forget that name!”

Potatoes Change Lives

HUNGER

Agricultural programs enable struggling farmers to produce sufficient and nutritious food to eat and sell should they have surplus. At the heart of every project are core trainings, resources and techniques that are appropriate and sustainable, and that restore and conserve the environment. Examples of such projects are our emergency food voucher program in South Sudan, turning former swampland into rich farm-

land in Liberia, repairing wells, protecting water supplies and building latrines in DR Congo, and working with the low-caste Musahar people of India. In partnership with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB) and local partners, we assist people in developing sustainable farming and cultivation methods. The aim is to provide long-term local solutions that protect the environment and meets the needs of the poor.

World Relief Canada’s food assistance and agriculture proj-ects combat hunger by providing food in times of crisis for hungry people in the developing world, and helps them build resiliency for the long-term.

This year, Canadians helped people grow more and diverse food to reliably feed themselves and their families, and provided nutritional support to vulnerable people with a focus on mothers and children.

590,501 The number of people reached with safe and reliable savings and loans services.

“My dream was to become a midwife as many babies died in my village. I took a loan to cover my training and buy the equipment I needed. I have been a midwife for seven years and delivered 300 babies. Our village now has 100% survival rate. Those 300 children are my legacy to my village and the loans I received.”- Anwara

Most of our economic empowerment projects involve a truly grass roots and locally replicable model of economic empowerment called Village Savings and Loans. Women, in particular, are empowered when they are economically active as they are able to substantially increase household incomes, participate more in decision making and reduce the vulnerability of their children to disease, illiteracy and exploitation. Often, simply accessing training and seed capital to start small businesses is all they need to lift themselves and their families up from abject poverty- many becoming agents of change felt throughout their communities.

World Relief Canada supporters can be proud that they are part of the solution for the poor who’ve shown tremendous capacity and willingness to save, and to build and protect their financial assets in climates where financial institutions can’t serve them.

Poverty

To break out of poverty, the enterprising poor require the same resources as every determined entrepreneur—access to financial services and skills training. That’s where Village Savings and Loans Associations come in.

Village Savings and Loans: A Proven Solution

“The Burundi On Ramp to Banking project has established itself before Savings Groups experts as one of the best Village Savings and Loans programs in Africa and among the best Village Savings and Loans programs worldwide.” -Independent Evaluator, 2014

More than half the world’s people live in grinding poverty- surviving on just less than $2 a day.

Bangladesh, Burundi, Kenya

Whatever their business venture, without collateral or credit history, traditional banks won’t provide the small loans they need for their businesses to succeed.

The Village Savings and Loans methodology builds from a model that local communities have used for centuries in order to manage their finances-groups of women and men pooling their savings before drawing out small loans from that pool in order to meet their needs.

It works by educating trainers to mobilize and train groups of community members in how to build and manage their own savings fund. As the savings fund grows, group members access small loans from the fund to finance business or consumption needs.

Loans have fixed terms and are repaid with a service fee, which is retained within the group in order to grow the group’s savings fund and provide a return on their savings. Groups are self-managed and set their own policies for their operations.

Each group may also have a social fund, which provides members a basic form of insurance for emergency assistance.

275,626 The number of people reached with support and resources for recovery from disaster and conflict.

This year, teams across Canada took up the Tough as Her Challenge by tackling gruelling Tough Mudder obstacle courses. These intrepid teams raised awareness and over $30,000 that helps provide clean nutritious food, clean water, access to education, healthcare and livelihood support for women around the world.

Tough As Her

Our expertise gained through responding for more than 40 years to natural and man-made disaster and conflict stricken areas of the world means we’re well placed to help people to recover, and also to help communities’ build resilience, so that future events have less impact.

Disasters, emergencies and conflict leave millions of people vulnerable to malnutrition or disease, without work or some-where to live, often causing loss of life.

World Relief Canada is a proud member of Integral, a global alliance of 20 Christian relief and development agencies, working together when disasters happen. We’re also trusted with funds from Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD) to reach out with humanitarian and emergency programming where it is needed most. This year we continued to assist in India (Cyclone Phailin), the Philippines (Typhoon Haiyan) and South Sudan (food relief).

When disaster strikes, World Relief Canada is ready to respond. Working to provide humanitarian and emergency relief and practical rehabilitation support.

Ruth Musavi is a mother of two. In 2013, she started a fruit and vegetable stall in her local market. Her dream was to one day own a store and sell much more than just fruits and vegetables. In 2014 she joined a savings group supported by the World Relief Canada Family, named Tumaini (Hope). She took a loan from her group of women who had been putting away small amounts of savings on a regular basis.

She borrowed $6 for school uni-forms so her children could attend school and then she borrowed $12 to buy additional stock for her grocery stall.Ruth’s business started to grow and she has repaid the women in her savings group with interest and reinvested her profits back into her business.Today, her retail shop also sells bagged staples like flour, rice and sugar, and she’s now looking to opening a wholesale line into her business model.

“It has always been my dream to be a shopkeeper, and now my dream has come true. When my sav-ings group started, the timing was perfect; I was ready and my business was ready.”

Dreams come true with your help

Above: “I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it,” is posted on Ruth’s door to her shop in Kenya, along with other verses from the Bible.
