The US-Africa Summit opened on Monday in Washington DC as Af-rican leaders were asked to respect political differences.Addressing 35 presidents of African states, including Kenya’s Uhuru Kenyatta, nine prime min-isters and three vice-presidents, US Vice President Joe Biden said core democratic principles are vital to achieving long-term growth. He asked civil rights activists to fight corruption terming the men-ace a cancer in the continent.“It’s a cancer in Africa as well as around the world. It is an affront to the dignity of the people and a direct threat to each of your nations’ stability and in deed all nations’ stability,” Biden said.US Secretary of State John Kerry urged civil society groups to bol-

ster democracy and the rule of law.“Strong institutions are always more effective, more durable and more predictable than strong men or women,” he said. The summit has come into sharp international focus as Washington seeks stronger economic ties with Africa.US has been outpaced by China and Europe on a continent where the International Monetary Fund expects to see 5.4 per cent growth this year and 5.8 in 2015.Although about Sh80 billion in business deals is expected to be formally announced between to-day and tomorrow when President Barack Obama makes personal involvement in the summit. US of-ficials chose to address democracy and civil rights concerns first.

Govt to liaise more with NGOs

Investing in Africa becoming easier, more attractive

Democracy key to growth, US tellsAfrican leaders

From Page 1“We are sick and tired of carrying placards…. we want to sit and talk and be a resource to the government. We do not want to be seen as a threat. So when we go back home, we want to work with the Government. We are not there to scold you, or complain or threaten your positions; we are there to help and be part of the solution,” she said to applause.Other than the Government’s

willingness to engage the civil society, Waiguru highlighted the administration’s efforts to the Open Government Partnership to which Kenya is a signatory. She said Huduma Centres which bring 34 government services under one roof would be rolled out to all 47 counties in the next one year from the current 16. “In the last one month, they’ve reduced the amount of time you require to register a business from

about 14 days to one,” Waiguru said. But Human Rights Activist Maina Kiai criticised African governments for making it easier for businesses to register yet frustrated similar efforts by civil society groups.“In Rwanda for example, it takes as little as six hours to register a business yet it takes six months for civil society organisations to be registered,” he said.Waiguru said the State House

portal for reporting corruption had been well received. “It’s been an active mode of communication where people can report anonymously any corruption activities that are going on in Government and has been effective,” she said. The civil society did not go unchallenged with the subject of financing and their interests coming up. “He who pays the piper calls the tune,” a participant said.

President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania was praised for engaging with his country’s civil society by leader Rakesh Rajani. “When we got here he asked us to sit down and chart the way forward.” But Kikwete accused the civil society of overstepping their mandate.

As African economies gain mo-mentum, investing in the conti-nent is becoming easier and more attractive to global investors. The narrative is one President Obama promotes this week as he convenes a gathering of African government officials in Washing-ton DC in efforts to bolster US re-lationship with one of the world’s

fastest-growing economies. An all-day event Tuesday will focus specifically on business and investing opportunities.Insurance and infrastructure represent some of the best invest-ing opportunities as companies expand to meet growing demand of countries that are becoming wealthier and more educated,

Ryan Hoover, founder of Invest-inginAfrica.net told USA Today.“There’s huge demand for energy, roads and water,” he says. “Any companies that have exposure to building or owning or operating power plants are seeing huge gains.”Among the top-performing stocks in Africa in the past year are three

insurance companies on the Nai-robi Securities Exchange, he says. Shares of Britam Investments, which has head offices in Nairobi, are up 193 per cent in the past 12 months. Pan African Insurance Holdings shares are up 127 per cent, and CIC Insurance shares are up 73 per cent.President Uhuru Kenyatta is

among heads of state attending the summit. The President is ex-pected to strengthen ties between US and Kenya in trade, capital investment, infrastructure, energy and security. He will also meet a select group of traders who have investment pro-posals that are specific to Kenya.

Sixty technical institutes will be constructed across the country in the current financial year. Deputy President William Ruto has said the technical institutes are aimed at promoting a knowledge-based economy to improve national

prosperity and global competitiveness.Another 100 technical institutes will be established in the next financial year to meet the education needs of the youth. “The Government has already finalized plans to establish 60 technical

institutes this financial year. Another 100 technical institutes will be put up come the next financial year and another 100 technical institutes before the end of 2017, he said.Ruto has added that establishing more technical

institutes will go a long way in ensuring quality, equity and reliability in the delivery of post-secondary education. “We want to have manpower skills and competence to tap the talent of the young people to drive the economy,” said

Ruto. The Deputy President said the Government was improving infrastructure to lower the cost of doing business and create more job opportunities for the youth. He added that the Government will involve the youth in promoting unity

and national cohesion across the country. Ruto said the Government has come up with a volunteer programme for the youth to engage in mentorship programs, saying this was aimed at uniting all the Kenyan different ethnic communities.

Police have warned motor-ists against stopping when their cars are hit from behind at night and instead report to the nearest police station. This is because robbers are now hitting their target cars from behind to draw out the occupants and rob them. A man was last night robbed when he slowed down after being hit by another car from behind on Kangundo Road.

The World Bank has announced it is allocating $200m (Sh17 billion) in emergency assistance for West African countries battling to contain the Eb-ola outbreak. The money will be distributed to the governments of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea as well as to the World Health Organization (WHO). This comes as the death toll from the virus reached 887 according to WHO. The World Bank’s announcement came as African leaders, including 35 presidents discuss the crisis in Washington.

A guard was last night hit and seriously wounded as he tried to stop a gang from stealing household goods in Kawangware. The gang had broken into a house and were busy collecting elec-tronic goods when the guard raised alarm. This prompted one the thugs to hit him in the head with a metal object before they escaped. The victim is currently admitted in hospital and no arrest has been made so far.

The average person spends more than a quarter of his or her lifetime directly in the way of other people. According to a study released last week by researchers at Rutgers University, whether a person is shopping at a supermarket, standing next to a shop, leaning against a wall or texting on their phone, 27 per cent of their lifetime is spent obstructing others.“Our research revealed that throughout a normal lifespan, a person will spend a total of three years in the middle of a sidewalk hindering the movement of pedestrians, a full year blocking doorways, and more than six months holding up a dozen or more strangers while walking far too slowly down a flight of stairs,” said

Head Researcher, Dr Kenneth Lawrence.Dr Lawrence added that most people spend at least 3 per cent of their lives standing in the centre of a crowded store aisle, forcing their frustrated fellow patrons to squeeze by with their carts. “Whether it’s impeding foot traffic in public, the home, or at work, the amount of time spent getting in the way of others really adds up. In fact, we found that most people spend an aggregate of three weeks each year just trying to manoeuvre out of the way of someone walking straight toward them.” The study also determined that 65 per cent of the average person’s life is spent not paying attention to where they are going.

Kenya’s Cabinet Secretaries attending the US-Africa Leadership Summit today played leading roles in moderating discussions on how US companies can invest more and succeed in Africa. Some of the areas where US companies could find the biggest opportunities in Kenya were outlined as energy and infrastructure sectors.Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary, Davis Chirchir who spoke on US-Kenya energy cooperation said the two countries were already working together on the energy sector with Power Africa having invested in several projects. He said Kenya wants to get the biggest share of the more than Sh600 billion Power Africa is investing in Africa.Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Michael Kamau spoke on Africa’s massive infrastructure development

We need to be partners in trade,” he said.Cabinet Secretary for The National Treasury, Henry Rotich was among the speakers at the forum which lasted the whole day.

Project uses mobile phones to relay proper feeding info

Kenya is among a list of Sub Saharan Africa countries set to benefit from a mobile phone project that allows users access to nutritional and health information. The project will help in addressing malnutrition at a time when data shows diet issues are among the country’s top concerns as 35 per cent of children under five years of age are reported to be

stunted. Dubbed mNutrition, the initiative targets three million people in Sub Saharan Africa and Asia. It is spearheaded by a not-for-profit inter-governmental organisation group led by CABI, the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and Oxfam GB and funded by UK Department For

International Development (DFID). The project will work in each country along with partners such as content providers, extension service providers, governments, mobile operators, NGOs and private sector companies. It will help deliver nutrition related information via mobile phones. The consortium will also link mNutrition services to

existing programmes and on-the-ground services. These will include agricultural extension and community health services. “In Africa and Asia, proliferation in mobile technology means we can reach people in even the most remote locations with essential agricultural and health advice,” says Fraser Norton, Programme Manager at CABI. “Mobile services

are becoming a vital link in the advisory chain, bridging an information gap that conventional public extension can’t span. Mobile technology is the future of delivering knowledge to those who need it most. We’re delighted that our consortium has been chosen to be the content provider in such an important mobile initiative.”

The group unites world-class expertise in agriculture, health and nutrition and has a strong presence in the 14 target countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, including Kenya, where the project will be rolled out later in 2014. Malnutrition is the largest contributor of child mortality worldwide and a key issue that needs urgent attention.

An Indian teenager took a knife to a so-called tantric who allegedly tried to rape her for a second time and cut off his penis. The man, who is also the girl’s uncle, is currently being hunted by detectives who praised what they described as the young woman’s “courage”.Police in the Madhepura district of Bihar said the young woman, believed to be aged either 17 or 18, had been raped last month by her uncle, who is known in the local area as a tantric and who performs rituals. When he allegedly tried to assault her a second time, she was prepared and had armed herself with a knife. The girl then reported what had happened to a village council. When the council

failed to tackle the matter to her satisfaction, the young woman contacted women police officers, located at the local station. One report in the Indian media said the girl had been taken to see the tantric by her parents after she fell ill and that he was tasked with “curing” her.Senior officer AK Singh, superintendent at the Alam Nagar police station, located around 200 miles east of the state capital, Patna, told The Independent that was not the case but that the man had abused her trust and his position as a member of the family.“The incident happened 20 days ago. Initially the girl went to the [village council] but

when that was unable to resolve the matter the case was brought to me,” said Mr Singh. “We then filed a case at the women’s police station.”Almost every day, the India media reports shocking sex crimes alleged to have been committed from across the length and breadth of the country. The prominence and space given to such reports has been sharply elevated since the December 2012 gang-rape and murder of a student in Delhi. The assault and murder of the young woman, who had boarded a bus with a friend after a visit to the cinema, sparked protests and a debate within the country about the treatment and position of women.

Hope truce will hold as Israel pulls out of GazaIsrael has announced the withdrawal of all of its troops to “defensive positions” outside the Gaza Strip. The move came moments before the latest truce - brokered by Egyptian mediators late on Monday - came into force at 08:00 local time (05:00 GMT).Israel claims the main aim of the conflict - to destroy militants’ tunnels - has been achieved. Gaza officials say the four-week conflict has killed

1,800 Palestinians. Some 67 Israelis have also died.“The Israel Defence Forces will be redeployed in defensive positions outside the Gaza Strip and we will maintain those defensive positions,” Israeli military spokesman, Lt-Col Peter Lerner said. Just minutes before the truce came into effect, air raid sirens sounded in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv as Hamas militants fired a barrage of rockets at central Israel. Israeli forces also staged

raids in Gaza shortly before the ceasefire began.Israel launched Operation Protective Edge on 8 July with the stated aim of ending rocket attacks and destroying tunnels used by Palestinian militants. In a statement just ahead of the withdrawal, the Israel Defence Forces said since then, it had taken out 32 tunnels designed to allow militants to carry out raids into Israel, destroyed 3,000 missiles and killed about 900 “terrorists”

There have been several truces called during the conflict but few have lasted, with each side accusing the other of violations.Egypt negotiated a similar truce earlier in the conflict that was accepted by Israel but rejected by Hamas. The new agreement proposes that delegations from all sides should attend further talks in Cairo. The main Palestinian demands remain on the table, notably a full Israeli troop withdrawal

from Gaza, the end of the blockade of the territory and the opening of border crossings.Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu said again on Monday that Israel’s main goal was to “return quiet and security to the citizens of Israel”.UN Secretary General Ban, Ki-moon has welcomed the ceasefire, and he called on both sides to hold talks in Egypt to begin as soon as possible.

Ngilu land shocker as Orengo names Ruto: The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) now claims land cartels regrouped to fight back Siaya Senator James Orengo for having revoked their titles during his tenure as Lands minister for which Jubilee leaders are accusing him of signing away public parcels particularly in Lamu County...

Trade, security deals on offer at US summit: The summit between US President Barack Obama and 50 African heads of state kicked off in Washington last evening with regional security, investment in the continent, food security and combating poaching top on the agenda. President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to speak at a luncheon co-hosted by the corpoarate council on Africa...

I revoked Ruto, Kiambi titles, says Orengo: Deputy President William Ruto and Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi are among individuals whose land titles were revoked by James Orengo, according to the former Lands minister.Addressing journalists yesterday after he was blamed for the allocation of 500,000 acres in Lamu, Orengo said Ruto and Kambi were among a group of organised powerful individuls whose titles he revoked...

Study says chilli pepper can help check gut tumorsResearchers at the Universi-ty of California, San Diego School of Medicine report that dietary capsaicin -- the active ingredient in chili peppers -- produces chronic activation of a receptor on cells lining the intestines of mice, triggering a reaction that ultimately reduces the risk of colorectal tumors. The receptor or ion channel, called TRPV1, was origi-nally discovered in sensory neurons, where it acts as a sentinel for heat, acidity and spicy chemicals in the environment. “These are all potentially harmful stimuli to cells,” said Eyal Raz, MD, professor of Medicine and senior author of the study. “Thus, TRPV1 was quickly described as a molecular ‘pain receptor.’ This can be considered to be its conventional function, which all takes place in the nervous system.”But Raz and colleagues, in a report published in The Journal of Clinical Investi-gation, say they have found that TPRV1 is also expressed by epithelial cells of the in-testines, where it is activated by epidermal growth factor receptor or EGFR. EGFR is an important driver of cell proliferation in the intestines, whose epithelial lining is replaced approximately every four to six days.“A basic level of EGFR activ-ity is required to maintain the normal cell turnover in the gut,” said Petrus de Jong, MD, first author of the study. “However, if EGFR signaling is left unrestrained, the risk of sporadic tumor development increases.” The scientists discovered that TRPV1, once activated by the EGFR, initiates a direct neg-ative feedback on the EGFR, dampening the latter.”

Cleaning up the land mess: Last week’s move to reposses 500,000 acres of land

Little mayor loses his bid for a third termA 5-year-old boy’s run as mayor is over in a tiny tourist town in northern Minnesota, USA.Robert “Bobby” Tufts lost his bid for a third consecutive term as mayor of Dorset on Sunday. Sixteen-year-old Eric Mueller of Mendota Heights, Minn., won when his name was drawn from the ballot box during the annual Taste of Dorset festival.Every year the town draws a name during its Taste of Dorset Festival, and the winner gets to be mayor. Anyone can vote as many times as they like — for $1 (Sh85) a vote — at any of the ballot boxes in stores around town.Bobby was running for a second term, and as mayor he got to draw the winning name on Monday, so there was a good chance he could draw his own name. Instead, Eric Mueller’s name was drawn. Eric was prompted to run after eating five fried ice creams at one sitting. He’ll be a high school junior this September. Bobby was only 3 when he was first elected mayor in 2013. Dorset, about 150 miles northwest of Minneapolis, has no formal city government and a population ranging from nine to 28. One of Bobby’s major acts was to declare ice cream top of the food pyramid.

The University of Nairobi (UoN) will soon set up a 21-storey building following a contribution from the Chandaria Foundation. The charitable organisation that was founded by the Comcraft

Group of Companies CEO Manu Chandaria.Located less than 200 meters from Hazina Towers, the building is already under construction.Dubbed of University of Nairobi

The Sh2.3 billion building is expected to address the challenge of insufficient lecture rooms and office space. In the past, lecturers university students have often been required to move between rooms in search for space that is not occupied. This has often displaced some students and forced others to at-tend classes in locations across the Central Business District. Some classes are held as far away as one kilometre from the main campus. As a result, the Chandaria Foun-dation has donated Sh50 million for the construction of a Centre for Performing Arts on the fifth floor of the building.“The industry is an area with a great potential for growth and can contribute immensely to the country’s economic develop-ment,” said Manu Chandaria as he presented the cheque to the university late last month.

As more small businesses adopt new ways to keep records, storage has be-come a major cause for concern. A book full of numbers is not as popu-lar as it once was. This is because more information can be stored in a computer. For the sake of businesses that do not have sufficient space on their devices, Carbonite company has developed a solution, popularly known by experts as ‘cloud’ storage.Carbonite is a leading provider of online backup solutions for con-sumers and small and medium sized businesses. It has subscribers in more than 100 countries across the world.“The cloud is a tech-industry term for information that’s sent to data centres for safe keeping while remaining accessible to you in real time,” says a spokesperson for Carbonite. “Instead of backing up your photos, music or business documents to external hard drives or flash drives, cloud backup sends your data to a secure, offsite storage facility. You can access your files anytime, anywhere while they remain protected from fire, flood, theft or other data disasters.”Yon Ubago, a senior consultant at tech company, Equilibrium IT Solutions, Inc., says though the tool is easy to use, it is “not good for medium and large businesses.”

Pyrethrum becomes popular again

The India Bank chief and 11 other officials have been arrested over bribery allegations.Sudhir Kumar Jain, the chairman of the state-run bank, has been accused of taking bribes in exchange for loan extensions to private firms. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in India, said that they recov-ered 5m rupees (Sh7.2million) that

was allegedly paid to Mr Jain through middlemen by the firms in order to get extensions on their loans. They also recovered property papers and jewellery.“We are determined to fight cor-ruption at high levels,” Ranjit Sinha, director of the Central Bureau of Investigations said. The CBI seized documents and com-

puter records after conducting raids across 20 different locations in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Bhopal. Other banks are also believed to be part of the conspiracy. An Indian police statement said Mr. Jain has given undue favour to pri-vate companies by granting sanctions to various financial proposals both directly and through middlemen.

The private companies had been defaulting on loan repayments to mid-sized banks amounting to tens of millions of rupees. The investiga-tions are still ongoing.Late last year, in a similar case, the CBI investigated a senior executive of India’s top lender State Bank of India for allegedly taking bribes to sanction loans to a company.

exportopppricedriverReleased maize to lower flour pricesFollowing a maize shortage that has been experienced in the country for months now, the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) said it will release 500,000 bags of maize to millers, traders and individuals at Sh2,800 a bag. Kenyans eat about four million bags of maize a month so this is barely 13 per cent of the country’s total consumption. However, the new rate will be the lowest price for the product since the average wholesale price for a 90-kg bag of dry maize previously stood at Sh3,100.“We are releasing maize to the market in order to bring down prices and make flour affordable to

consumers,” said NCPB spokesman, Evans Wasike in a statement late last month. The maize is currently stored in NCPB facilities in Bondo, Moi’s Bridge, Kitale, Eldoret, Kipkaren and Narok.“This is good news not only to millers, but also Kenyans as it is part of the strategy to lower the price of flour,” said Diamond Lalji, Millers Association Chairman.NCPB experts say the offloading of the Board’s stock is expected to push down market prices that have seen a two-kilogramme packet of maize flour sell for Sh118 from Sh110 two months ago.

Internet firm to upgrade network

connection: Zuku has announced an upgrade of its network to improve services.

Officials from the Pyrethrum Regulatory Authority (PRA) have said that earnings by farmers from Nakuru county increased by 69 per cent in the last crop season after the industry’s exports doubled

to Sh240 million from Sh120 million a year ago.Despite the improvement, The highest yield in recent years from the sector, which provides employment to over 200,000 farmers, was Sh993

million in exports in 2001.Currently, Australia has overtaken Kenya as the leading producer of pyrethrum. Over a decade ago, Kenya was producing approximately 70 per cent

of the world consumption, says a report by the Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZ). Other large producers of pyrethrum include Rwanda, and Tanzania. The pyrethrum extract is mainly exported to USA, Europe and parts of Asia.About adecade ago when farmers, frustrated by poor prices and delays in payments, abandoned it for other crops like French beans.Last year, the government disbursed Sh50 million to settle part of a Sh55 million that PRA owed farmers and employees up to October. PRA Managing Director, Alfred Busolo said last month the flowers are steadily becoming popular again as the PRA is currently collecting Sh22 million a month from exports.

Zuku has announced a major network upgrade that will see the leading home internet service provider offer customers improved Internet speeds and reduced downtime. The network upgrade will provide speeds of up to 50Mega bytes per second (Mbps) for its Nairobi customers. Zuku’s announcement comes at a time when there is a growing demand for quality internet services. Kenya’s internet subscribers have grown by 1.3 per cent since 2012 to stand at over 13 million users. On the other hand, those accessing the internet on a regular basis stand at close to 20 million, almost half the country’s population.Zuku’s network upgrade, valued at Sh220 million, is expected to be complete by the end of October, In Mombasa, the upgrade took effect on August 1, 2014.“Over the last two years we have had an unprecedented growth in our customer numbers, hence the need to provision more capacity in the network to accommodate

the growth,” said Richard Alden, Chief Executive Officer of the Wananchi Group, the holding company of Zuku. “This upgrade will ensure that we offer improved service to existing and new customers,” Alden said the upgrade will focus on increasing network access capacity for the end user and new voice architecture to provide cutting edge telephony services and increase national backbone capacity. The announcement comes just days after statistics released last week by the Communications Authority showed that Wananchi Group’s market share in the Fixed/ Wireless Internet Subscriptions market grew by 1.7 per cent in MarchWananchi Group now controls almost half of Kenya’s subscriptions in that specific market.“We shall continue to invest in these technologies and other latest ones in our network for the betterment of the services to our customers and to maintain our edge in the market,” Alden said.

Gas leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning have been the cause of many preventable disasters. Hundreds of people die each year from gas explo-sions. Kepler, a device made by a group of young designers, engineers and pro-grammers based in Shenzhen, China, monitors gas and carbon monoxide levels in the home. The device has an active gas and car-bon monoxide (CO) warning system that alerts one if dangerous levels have been reached. The main inspiration behind Kepler was to prevent tragedies by creating a device that could warn people of gas leaks and dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. With its portable design, Kepler is designed to provide users with active monitoring, alarms as well as direct monitoring from one’s smartphone. Kepler has an early warning system that allows a user to respond to the situation as quickly as possible. If gas leaks or CO levels become dangerous, the device immediately alerts the user by flashing a red warning light.

The Oromo people believed there is no punishment after death, unlike the teachings in the Christian and Islamic faiths. Anybody who breaks God’s commandment is liable for punishment when they are still alive, the community believes. Gadaa.com, an Oro-mo cultural site, says anybody who goes against God’s law, Waaqayoo, is punished on earth before they die. Oromo believe when one passes on,

they continue living in form of a spirit called Ekeraa. Eker-aa lives among their people. Ekeraa guards the living against evil and protecting the living made the ekeraa to hang around their former homes. But the living too had an obligation to please the departed by offering animal sacrifices, especially to one’s parents. The sacrifices were offered in place where a person is

buried. The Oromo tradition-al religion had semblance to Islam; they paid pilgrimage to holy places known as Qaallus and other designated religious centres. One of the common ones was the Arsi Abbaa Muuda, which loosely trans-lates to ‘the father of atone-ment’. Pilgrims, also known as Jiia in Oromo, carried myrrh in one hand and a walking stick on their way to the holy shrine. The community

worshipped under trees, large bodies of water, by moun-tains, hills, stones, and other places they considered sacred. During worship, believers beat drums and danced while singing. At the height of the religious ceremony Ayyaana, the spirit of the departed, speaks through Qaallu’s mouth. Qaallu was a title for a religious leader and a holy place. Qaalu could predict the future at this point.

Jacob Solomon has found passion in his art. Born in Nairobi, his love affair with art started during his kindergarten days.“I started taking art serious-ly in year 9 when I switched to IGCSE and I had this

really good art teacher, Mrs Osir who explained it from a fundamental spiritual view, that art is the reflection of how we see the world and how we want to see it,’’ says Solomon. Some of his art is influenced by Manga, as Japanese style that became popular in the 1950s though its origin dates back to the 12th century. Using thick strokes, thin lines and soft shading, Solomon creates colourful masterpieces that are inviting to the eye. “I really love their clean lines and minimal approach. I love rough lines. It gives my work an edgy feel,’’ says Solomon. It has not always

been easy for the artist who is studying mass commu-nication at Africa Nazarene University. ‘‘My challenge was placing a value in my work. I charged very little and people took advantage of that,’’ says Solomon.Visual art is not new in Kenya but for a number of artists, the sector can be re-warding. For many, it starts as a hobby before turning into a full-fledged career. ‘’I wanted to be a comic artist. Many said that it is not a sustainable career, what they didn’t understand was that it is a sequential art, and storyboard artists are needed to do advertise-ments, story books, films,

posters, graphic design,’’ says Solomon. He believes that for the industry in Kenya to grow, specialised art businesses should be formed. ‘‘People still view art generally in this country - there is product design, graphic design, web design, sequential art, fine art, game design,’’ he says. Solomon’s work has been published in UP magazine where he has won a competition. He be-lieves challenges that artists face include the society’s way of looking at creative arts as being a profession that lacks seriousness. He also believes clients under-valuation of their work frus-trates the sector’s growth.

Vegetable rice or fried rice is one of the simplest dishes to make. It is for those that crave a nice simple meal but are either too busy to cook or just lazy. The dish is usually confused with pi-lau or biryani but the main difference is that vegetable rice does not require as many species like those used in the other two dishes. The main ingredients include; rice, carrots, peas, onions, spices, garlic, coriander, cooking oil and salt to taste.Beans, tomatoes, potatoes or cauli-flower can also be added to the ingre-dients. Other spices like cinnamon or one’s favourite food additive can be used to add colour and to give it a delicious taste. The ingredients (carrots, onions, and garlic) are chopped and cleaned. The amount of rice to be used will de-pend on how many people the food

is being cooked for.Heat the cooking oil in a pan, add the onions, sauté until golden brown and then add the carrots, peas, and ginger and mix well. Add a little water to allow them to cook without burning.Once they have cooked until tender, add the amount of water required to cook the rice, one can choose to add lemon juice. The lemon juice acts a preservative if the dish needs to be stored.Clean the rice and once the water boils, add the rice and while it boils add the coriander and mix well to ensure the flavours combine to bring out a delicious taste. Stir repeatedly. When the water evaporates, reduce the heat, cover it with a lid and let it simmer for about ten minutes. Serve the vegetable rice hot. It can be eaten on its own or any type of curry or stew.

boshintang, the dog soup Koreans love

Vegetable rice, a simple meal

Boshintang is a South Korean soup that includes dog meat as its primary ingredient. Dog meat is common in Korea with restaurants dedicated to serving different varieties of cooked dog meat. The meat is boiled with vegetables like green onions, dandelions and spices. It is seasoned with Agastache rugosa, a herb, before being eaten. The soup has been around for centuries, but in recent years it has been criticized both in and out of Korea by animal rights activists. Dog meat is eaten nationwide and all year round, although it is commonly eaten in the summer. The meat is usually cooked in soup or stew or roasted. It is believed to have medicinal properties like helping in keeping body heat in check

and giving one energy during the hot summer days. It is also believed to increase virility and sexual prowess. There are dog farms in Korea that have been approved by the government to raise dogs for sale to restaurants. Alternatively people acquire dogs by stealing from their neighbours or capturing stray ones. The Nureongi, or Hwangu is the breed of dog that is primarily raised for meat. When a dog have reached the desired weight, it is strung up to a tree and beaten to death. The reason for this is to get the adrenalin pumping through the dog and to ‘tenderize’ the meat while killing the animal at the same time. The dog’s meat is perceived to taste better if it had high adrenalin levels before it died.

Joyce Wambui won Kenya’s first ever para powerlifting medal at the Commonwealth Games, a bronze, in the women’s heavyweight at the Clyde Auditorium on Saturday. Wambui’s total of 68.6 points was way below the winning score of 112.4 in the more than 61kg category. The points were enough to earn her a medal that has eluded Kenyan Para-lifters in previous three attempts at the games. Kenya’s other competitor in the category, Samson Okutto, had a strong start and was well positioned for a medal with his first lift of 160kg. He, however, scaled down to fifth in the men’s lightweight of up to 72kg.“The competition was tough for me because there are many

stronger lifters who put pressure on me to

perform well. I am glad it pushed me to do my best and win bronze,” said a delighted Wambui.

“I believe we can do better with more support

and better facilities, it not all about track events,” she said. The 38 year old’s best lift was almost half of the gold medallist Nigerian Loveline Obiji’s 144kg which was a new world record. The 23- year-old Nigerian beat Egyptian Randa Mahmoud’s mark of 143kg set in Dubai this year. The world record holders score was 10kg more than her compatriot Bose Omolayo, who had lifted the light weight gold earlier. Omolayo’ faulted her opening round before lifting 127kg her best attempt for a score of 113.4 points.

The Southampton midfielder who endured a rough time at the conclusion of the barren draw at the Nyayo National Stadium said he understands the disappointment by the fans.Wanyama said the new technical bench should start to constitute a winning team.

“This campaign is gone and we must now start looking at the future. We need to bring in new players into the team,” said the midfielder.Wanyama blamed poor finishing for the team’s failure to get past Lesotho on Sunday at Nyayo Stadium. “We created many chances but we could not take advantage of them. It is unfortunate that it has to end this way. To the fans, we did let you down, but never stop supporting the team, it means a lot to the players,”

he said.Kenya failed to progress in the competition after settling for a scoreless draw with Lesotho as the visitors went through on 1-0 aggregate. They needed to win by two clear goals to progress.“Our country has good players and I know whoever comes in will be able to properly come up with a strong team for the future, the dream is still on,” he said.

way possible and we will see how things pan out. “It’s great to have signed for Madrid. I will learn a lot from all the players here. Van Persie to miss start of the season

winning run: Kenya’s Eunice Sum crosses the finish line to win the 800m at the World Championships in `Moscow last year.

Tuesday, auGusT 5, 2014

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed that Robin van Persie will miss the start of the season following a lengthy post-World Cup break. The 30-year-old striker was a key component in Van Gaal’s Netherlands team and helped take the Oranje to a third-place finish in Brazil. Van Persie was allowed an extended break, meaning he has missed all of United’s pre-season preparations - a fact that has led Van Gaal to rule him out of the Premier League opening weekend.

“Robin wants to play every game, I know that, but so do the other 30 players in the squad,” the 62-year-old said. “But players have to train and Robin needs a full training regime behind him before he can play again.” “Robin began training on Monday, but he won’t play in the friendly against Valencia on Au-gust 12, definitely not. “And he won’t play in the Premier League at the start either, I think. I know what you have to do with players who have had three weeks’ holiday.

World champion Eunice Sum assertively won Kenya’s fourth consecutive 800m women’s title at the Commonwealth Games in 2:00.31 on Friday.Sum was outstanding as she went straight in front after the gun to control the pace of the race while keeping an eye on her strongest challengers, Uganda’s Winnie Nanyondo and New Zealand’s Angie Smit.At the bell, the World Cham-pion looked confident as she increased the pace to set a mark in the two laps race win-ning in her Club Games debut as Scots Lynsey Sharp scoped silver for the hosts in 2:01.34, four seconds ahead of Nan-yondo who bagged bronze. There was never a doubt on

Sum’s chase for the Com-monwealth games title after a stellar season checked by only by the defeat in Monaco. “I stuck to my front running and it worked for me so, now it’s to work on lowering my personal best in Brussels.” Her 1:57.38 time in Moscow last year was her fastest. Sum said she used the race to prepare for a possible African medal challenge and her season ending diamond league races.“My season has been reward-ing no doubt, time and effort spent in training is has been yielding resuls, I want to continue aiming higher, said the runner whose1:57.38 time in Moscow last year was her fastest.

Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim has warned poten-tial suitors off star striker Radamel Falcao who scored against Arsenal on Sunday to prevent them winning their Emirates Cup.Valencia won the com-petition having amassed nine points, one more than the Gunners who could not find the goal against Monaco to win

their own tournament for the first time since 2010. Falcao scored the only goal of the game in the first half. The Colombia international returned to club duty on Saturday after recovering from a knee injury that ruled him out of theWorld Cup in Brazil. The powerful forward came on as a substi-tute against Valencia in

their 2-2 friendly draw at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, shortly before Real Madrid - who have been heavily linked with a summer swoop for the player - suffered a 3-1 de-feat to Manchester United in America. Jardim has already seen James Rodriguez move to the European champions and is determined not to lose Falcao before the

start of the season. “At this point Falcao is our player and he’s with us 100 per cent and we don’t want to let him go,” Jardim said. “It’s a pity we lost James [Rodriguez] but we can count on Falcao staying. Regardless of what people say, he’s our player. “He’s in the final stages of his recovery and he’ll be with us this season.”

Following the failure by Harambee Stars to qualify to group stages of 2015 Africa Cup of Nations cup, a petition has been lodged in the World’s largest social change platform, change.org, to kick out Football Kenya Federation (FKF).Football enthusiast Michael Omondi filed the petition, which was copied to President Uhuru Kenyatta calling for the Sam Nyamweya-led office to be disbanded to rescue the sport. The petition reads: Football is a national sport and is considered to be one of the most exciting sports to watch and is followed by many. It excites emotions in people, brings many both friend and foe together and when people are in the stadium, they forget their problems. The governing body of football in Kenya is FKF.If managed properly, it is a source of income to many youths and is a source of pride to a country. The current state of football in the country is wanting and has been

deteriorating over the years. Today, we hit the lowest moment and there seems to be no end in sight to our problems. FKF has fired the entire technical team but they are the main problem and need to go.The letter accused FKF of failure to set up youth structures to feed the national team and lack of policies on players reporting to camp. The letter says players report to camp a day before the match and playing full 90 minutes.“There cannot be any meaningful change to be done with the current office in place as they are the stumbling block,” the letter reads. The fan accuses FKF of lacking a coach development programme and being steeped in endless internal wrangles as the chairman suspend everyone who challenges him.“It is with these reasons that I am requesting my fellow soccer fans to support this cause and I believe Mr President will heed our call and save Kenyan soccer from this madness.”

A field of 55 juniors will compete in the 72-hole event which counts for the World Amateur Ranking. Among top players to

compete for the four-round draw include Kenya’s Daniel Nduva, Naomi Wafula, Kenya’s bronze medallists in the recent Africa Youth

Olympic Games Adel Balala, Mary Monari and Mathew Wahome. The tournament is sponsored by Crown Paints Kenya Ltd.

Last year, South Africa’s Hennie Duplessis emerged the best in championship after scoring 280 gross.

Rory McIlroy is on top of the world again after winning the Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday to return to No 1 position. In his first start since a wire-to-wire win at the British Open, McIlroy wiped out a three-shot deficit in only three holes and closed with a 4-under 66. Sergio Garcia had a three-shot lead going into the final round at Firestone. McIlroy fired off three straight birdies and already had the lead when he stood on the fourth tee. He took over the lead for good with an 8-foot birdie putt on the 11th hole, got some breath-ing room when Garcia made bogey on the 15th hole and the 25-year-old from Northern Ireland cruised home to a two-shot victory.McIlroy became the 13th player with a major and a World Golf Championship to join Tiger Woods as the only players to win them in consecutive starts.

Manchester City midfield-er Samir Nasri has hinted he could quit international football after revealing he has made a decision about his future with France. The attacking midfielder was left out of France’s 2014 World Cup squad by coach Didier Deschamps and a return seems unlikely following his latest comments on his future. “I’ve made the decision,” Nasri said. “I took it a while ago but I’ll say it when the time is right. It’s not something you can just announce on Twitter.

“I didn’t win anything with the national team so it’s easier to take this decision than if we’d just won something. When you play for a big club and you play lots of games, it’s easy to come to this decision. “Yes, Maybe City will benefit. Maybe during the internation-al breaks I can stay and work a little bit more. All the players who played the World Cup and have lots of games during the season with their national teams can get tired and pick up injuries, that kind of stuff. So I think I will be fresh.” Nasri claimed criticism from

Deschamps and the French media does not faze him but wants to protect his family. “It doesn’t affect me but it affects my family. They live in France, they read the press and stuff like that,” he said.“I live in England. I’m fine with everything they said and I’m used to it. But for my parents it’s really hard. I want to make them happy and the national team doesn’t make me happy,” he said. The 27-year-old has made 41 international appearances, scoring five goals for France.

India have retained their fourth position in the ICC Test rankings despite a loss in the third cricket Test against England at Southampton. The five-match series is currently locked at 1-1. South Africa lead the rankings after their series victory against Sri Lanka last month followed by Australia. After drawing the first Test, India posted a victory in the second match at Lord’s but went down in the third.

Despite the defeat, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men have maintained their fourth spot at 102 rating points. The final rankings of both India and England (ranked 5th with 100 rating points) will heavily depend on the upcoming two-Test series between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, which will commence in Galle from August 6. Pakistan are currently ranked third with 103 rating points, just one

point more than India, while Sri Lanka are at sixth position with 95 points. The five-Test series between India and England will end a day after the series between Sri Lanka and Pakistan finishes, and all the teams would be looking to climb up the ladder. If India manage to perform well in the remaining two Tests and Pakistan lose the Test series against Sri Lanka, India will gain in the ranking table.

Kenyan Premier League side Nairobi City Stars have confirmed Nigerian Robinson Ofwoko as head coach. This follows the resignation of Briton Tim Bryett, who threw in the towel citing alleged interference in his work. Bryett is believed to have tendered his resignation at the weekend, days after the club went down 2-0 to KCB.Nairobi City Stars chairman Peter Jabuya said he received the Briton’s resignation letter and accepted it. “We have received his letter and appointed Ofwoko in an interim basis as head coach. First blood to van Gaal as United hit Liverpool

Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata scored two minutes apart in a second-half flurry, and Jesse Lingard added a third goall in the final minutes as Manchester United rallied to beat long-time rivals Liverpool 3-1 in the title match of the International Champions Cup this morning. This was a friendly only in name yet at the end of an entertaining,

sweat soaked 90 minutes, it was Louis van Gaal who emerged victorious, enthused yet left with a few conundrums to solve after securing his first victory over a Premier League rival. While Rooney’s display was encouraging along with Ander Herrera and Ashley Young, the performances of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, both terrorised

in the first-half by Raheem Ster-ling, were a cause of real con-cern with the Premier League kick-off under two weeks away. Both were ponderous and looked to be lacking in confi-dence playing in the Dutchman’s preferred 3-5-2 formation, which seemed to favour the wing-backs but not the cen-tre-halves.

“It’s nice to win for the fans here and at home, it’s not our favour-ite opponent and we have given a lot of pleasure to our fans,” said Van Gaal. “This though in the end means nothing. Swansea City and the start of the Premier League is the most important game for us. The momentum though will help us for sure.”On Rooney he dropped the

clearest of hints that the England striker could well be his captain come the start of the season.“I am always looking for oppor-tunities to give players the cap-tain’s armband. Today Rooney played 90 minutes for the first time. Fletcher had already done it two times, then he was the captain, and Cleverley because he also had 90 minutes.”
