At the beginning of the parasha, we are given the commandment – “tzedek, tzedek tirdof” – “justice, justice shall you pursue”. We learned that “tirdof” is much more emphatic than “pursue”. It would be more accurate to say, “justice, justice shall you chase.” (Thank you Michael!) Purple Hibiscus, novel byChimamanda Ngozi Adichie ©2008,Algonquin Books $14.95 (paperback)307 pages

One way to learn about differ-ent cultures is to read the publishedworks of authors from those cultures.Post-colonial Africa has produced anumber of talented writers who areable to give us glimpses into theirworlds. I'm extremely lucky to havebeen introduced to the writings ofsome of them, including those of Ms.Adichie. She was born in Nigeria in1977 and has written three novels -all of them have won prestigiousawards. Her third novel, Ameri-canah, was named to the New YorkTimes Best Books of 2013.

Purple Hibiscus is her firstpublished novel. It tells the story ofKambili, age 15, and her older broth-er Jaja, who are the children of a verywealthy newspaper publisher in Nige-ria. One would think theirs would bean idyllic existence, but their fatherEugene shows a different face to hisfamily than to the rest of the world.A religious fanatic, he is not only vio-

lent and cruel to his family but hasthe priest in charge of the missionarychurch and school completely in hispower. Eugene has totally disownedall members of his family, includinghis own father, who still practice oneof the old religions of Nigeria. Herefuses to attend what he considersthe pagan rituals of his father's funer-al. Following a brutal incident at Eu-gene's hands, the two children aresent to spend time with their father'ssister, a kind, strong, vibrant womanwith children of her own who disa-grees with Eugene on almost every-thing. It becomes obvious that bothKambili and Jaja have difficulty en-gaging in even the simplest practicesof socializing with other people, butwith the help and understanding oftheir aunt, one can almost believe in areasonably normal future for them. The country's political upheavals putthe entire family in a precarious posi-tion more than once, and Eugene be-comes more unhinged and violentwith each incident. Kambili is forcedto deal with events she has neverbeen taught to handle - or even imag-ine. Even with all this, it isn't a sad

story, but one that is remarkably be-lievable.

Ms. Adichie's prose is amongthe most lucent I've read by any au-thor, and can almost make you physi-cally feel the air and taste the food ofNigeria. In the book, she includes amorning prayer spoken by Kambili'sgrandfather that rivals anything I'veread from any religion. (I'll leave itto you to find it.)

One of my favorite quotesfrom my lifetime of reading is,"Allow others their otherness." (I'dattribute that if I could.) Some otherauthors who have helped me appreci-ate "otherness" are Amy Tan, KhaledHosseini, NoViolet Bulawayo,Jhumpa Lahira, Louise Erdrich, StiegLarsson, Abraham Verghese, AyadAkhtar, Chinua Achebe, Mohsin Ha-mid, Peter Godwin, and AlexanderMcCall Smith. Reading works bythese authors has broadened myworldview and has helped me under-stand that my little white-bread worldisn't the only world. The others arejust as valid and legitimate as mine. And I think some might even be moreinteresting.

THE BOOK I MET THIS MONTH

Submitted by Carolyn Jobe

This month, Chodesh Elul, isthe time we begin to prepare ourselvesfor Yom Kippur (yes, it is here!). Oneof our challenges is to be constantlyaware of our personal actions, theactions of our community, and theactions of our nation. It is thisconstant state of awareness that willlead to positive action and theestablishment of a just society at alllevels. As Gd.’s special nation, ourfocus must always be on ourresponsibilities, more than our requestfor special privileges. (RabbiMenachem Leibag – Pardes: Instituteof Jewish Studies)

May we all do what is “rightin Gd.’s eyes”, not only as we enterinto these days leading up to YamimNora’im (the Days of Awe), buteveryday throughout the year.

Please come and join us forTorah study, every Saturday morning. We look forward to having your inputinto our discussions.

Ki Teitzei

Deuteronomy 21:10 - 25:18

This final group of laws, givenby Moses to the Israelites, as they werepoised to enter the Promised Land, isdirected mainly toward the individual’sresponsibility to maintain lawful andhumane relations with others. Chiefamong these rules are injunctions forproper behavior in domestic affairs, consideration for others and kindness toanimals.

A partial list of the numeroustopics covered in this week’s portionfollows: female captives; the first-bornson’s inheritance; execution and burial ofconvicted criminals; return of lostproperty; animals struggling under theirburdens; removal of eggs and youngfrom a nest; rooftop parapets;agricultural crossbreeding and otherprohibited combinations; betrothal, marriage, divorce, remarriage, rape, adultery, inheritance, newlyweds, levirate marriage, widows, orphans, themamzer; laws governing relations withforeigners; the army camp; shelteringslaves; vows; vineyard and fieldworkers; paying wages in a timelyfashion; security for loans; testimony ofclose relatives; forgotten sheaves andleftover fruit; weights and measures.

The sidra concludes with areminder to always remember thebaseless aggression of the Amalekitestowards the Israelites immediatelyfollowing the exodus from Egypt. Whenthe opportunity arises, the Amalekitesare to be destroyed.

Ki Thavo

Deuteronomy 26:1 – 29:8

Ki Thavo opens with thededication of first fruits. By offering thefirst fruits to the temple, theyacknowledge the sovereignity o Godand His goft of the land. Ki Thavo alsocontains the second Tochacha, series ofcurses, given to the Israelites. The firsttochacha, spoken to the first generationafter the debacle of the Spies, appearsin Bechukotai, Leviticus 26:14-45. The

parasha presents the natural progressionof cause and effect through the way wedeal with one another and our respectfor the land and gifts that God has givenus. Within the section is the Law of BenSorer, the wayward and rebellious son.,emphasizing the integrity of society isbased on the well-being of familyrelationships. At a glance, Ben Sorerseems brutal, but the negative mitzvotcauses us to re-examine ourselves in thelight of positive comandments andsocial action.

Netzavim

Deuteronomy 29:9 – 30:20

The Parshah of Nitzavimincludes some of the most fundamentalprinciples of the Jewish faith:

The unity of Israel: "You standtoday, all of you, before the L-rd yourG-d: your heads, your tribes, yourelders, your officers, and every Israeliteman; your young ones, your wives, thestranger in your gate; from your woodhewer to your water drawer."

The future redemption: Moseswarns of the exile and desolation of theLand that will result if Israel abandonsG-d's laws, but then he prophesies that,in the end, "You will return to the L-rdyour G-d... If your outcasts shall be atthe ends of the heavens, from there willthe L-rd your G-d gather you... andbring you into the Land which yourfathers have possessed."

The practicality of Torah: "Forthe Mitzvah which I command you thisday, it is not beyond you nor is itremote from you. It is not in heaven... Itis not across the sea.... Rather, it is veryclose to you, in your mouth, in yourheart, that you may do it."

Freedom of choice: "I have setbefore you life and goodness, and deathand evil; in that I command you thisday to love G-d, to walk in His waysand to keep His commandments... Lifeand death I have set before you, blessing and curse. And you shallchoose life."

Va Yelakah

Deuteronomy 31:1 – 31.30

The Parshah of Vayelech ("AndHe Went") recounts the events onMoses' last day of earthly life. "I amone hundred and twenty years oldtoday," he says to the people, "and I canno longer go forth and come in." Hetransfers the leadership to Joshua, andwrites (or concludes writing) the Torahin a scroll which he entrusts to theLevites for safekeeping in the Ark ofthe Covenant.

The mitzvah of Hak'hel("Gather") is given: every seven years, during the festival of Sukkot of the firstyear of the shemittah cycle, the entirepeople of Israel -- men, women andchildren -- should gather at the HolyTemple in Jerusalem, where the kingshould read to them from the Torah.

Vayelech concludes with theprediction that the people of Israel willturn away from their covenant with G-dcausing Him to hide His face fromthem, but also with the promise that thewords of the Torah "shall not beforgotten out of the mouths of theirdescendants."

I shall create a Man for you.""What's a Man, Lord?""This man will be a flawed creature, with many bad traits. He'll lie, cheat, and be very competitive; all in all,he'll give you a hard time. But, he'llbe bigger, faster, and will like to huntand kill things. He will look silly whenhe's aroused, but since you've beencomplaining, I'll create him in such away that he will satisfy your physicalneeds. He will be witless and willrevel in childish things like fightingand kicking a ball about. He won't betoo smart, so he'll also need youradvice to think properly.""Sounds great." says Eve, with an

ironically raised eyebrow."But, what's the catch, Lord?""Well... you can have him on onecondition.""What's that, Lord?""As I said, he'll be proud, arrogant, and self-admiring... So you'll have tolet him believe that I made him first...Just remember, it's our little secret---You know, Woman to Woman."

Come & get me!Isaac and Sarah got married and lefton their honeymoon. When they gotback, Sarah immediately telephonedher mother Leah."Well," said Leah, "how was thehoneymoon, darling?""Oh mom," Sarah replied, "thehoneymoon was fantastic. It was soromantic, and ..and..."Then Sarah started to cry. "Oh mom,as soon as we got back, Isaacstarted using terrible language. Hesaid things I'd never hoped to hear, all those 4-letter words. Please mom,get into your car now and come andtake me home.""Calm down, darling," said Leah, "tellyour mother what could be that awful.

Don't be shy, tell me what 4-letterwords Isaac used.""Please mom, I'm too embarrassed totell you, they're terrible words. Justcome and take me away." saidSarah."But bubeleh, you must tell me, youmust tell me what the 4-letter wordswere."Still crying, Sarah replies, "Oh mom,he used words like WASH, COOK,IRON, DUST, ..."

Haazinu

Deuteronomy 32:1-52

The sidra begins with the song/poem that Moses introduced at the endof the last parasha. Through a varietyof metaphors, God’s faithfulness to theIsraelites in the past and into the futureis extolled. This contrasts with Israel’soften-ungrateful behavior, which canonly lead to destruction. Yet, God’s

mercy for his people will prevail; Godcan be trusted to rescue themultimately.

At the conclusion of the song –for the final time – Moses stresses tothe people the importance of observingGod’s Torah. He then ascends MountNebo, from where he will behold thePromised Land and spend his finalmoments.
