WHEN –
After School activities take place every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
from 2:45 – 4:15 P.M. Activities will not be scheduled on half days during
the school year or on early release days. Club sponsors will give details on
start dates and how to sign up during the morning announcements.
MCPS ACTIVITY FEE –
Participation in after-school activities and athletics requires an activity fee
paid to Montgomery County Public Schools. This fee is applied toward the
cost of supplies and materials, sponsor stipends, and activity bus costs.
There is a sliding fee based on household income (appropriate documentation
must be provided). Students may not participate in an activity until the
activity fee is received by MCPS.

ELIGIBILITY FOR AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES –
When grades fall below a 2.0 grade point average and/or a students has
more than one E in the previous marking period, a student may become
ineligible to participate in extracurricular activities, except for
Homestretch Club. However, middle school students may request early
reinstatement of eligibility. In order to do so, the student must show
academic improvement and follow the eligibility reinstatement guidelines.

ACTIVITY BUSES
Buses will be arriving at 4:15 p.m.
Students staying after school to make up work with teachers must
make arrangements for early pick-up if they finish before activity
buses arrive at 4:15 p.m.
Students will be kept in the activity until the buses are announced.
At that time all students will come to the front of the building.
All students must ride the activity bus unless parents
pick them up by 4:20 p.m. If their ride has not
arrived by the time the bus departs they will be
expected to ride the bus home. All students will be given a bus ticket to board activity buses.

Description of Activity –
The Leo’s Service Club is designed to have students involved in community
service projects of their choice. The Rocky Hill Leo’s Club is sponsored by
the Damascus Lion’s Club, where the motto is “We Serve”. The Leo’s Service
Club will provide a variety of service opportunities throughout the year.
Students can pick and choose which projects to be involved in as they help their
community and earn student service hours. Planned projects include a
community food drive, appreciation letters and cards to various groups who
value our support, community clean-up, and involvement in the Willpower Game.
Other opportunities will be explored according to student interests.

Description of Activity –
This group sings ‘Pop’ music from the radio, movies, Broadway musicals and
more. It is open to any 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student. There will be a maximum
of 75 students allowed to participate. All interested students are invited to join
but priority will be given to students currently enrolled in chorus. It meets
Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 2:50-4:15 beginning in mid-February
through Spring break. The group will perform a concert at Rocky Hill on April
10.

Description of Activity –
The students will have the opportunity to display the multiple talents developed
outside of school. We can raise money for the school or a cause by selling
modestly priced tickets.

The students will be able to collect data on the stream adjacent to Rocky Hill,

Talk about ideas for the yearbook. Get students involved in the design and
compilation of the yearbook. It will include student and staff interviews, along

Description of Activity –
Students will learn about how things are done to put on a full theatrical
production for an audience. They will learn lines, blocking, choreography and
music for a musical and lines and blocking for a non-musical. They will also have
costumes and make-up for the performances. This process is beneficial for
students to help them gain self-confidence. They will learn how to work in
groups and achieve common goals. “In my 18 years of doing drama for Rocky Hill
I have been very fortunate to have many of my past students continue in
theater in High School, College and beyond.”, Mrs. Nacht

Description of Activity-
The National Junior Honor Society is a club activity for seventh and eighth
grade students who meet the requirement of a cumulative middle school grade
point average of 3.85 or higher. Students meeting this requirement then
complete an application demonstrating their commitment to the pillars of
citizenship, service, character, and leadership. Final selection into the club is
based on the recommendations of a panel of Rocky Hill staff members.

Description of Activity-
The Rocky Hill Newspaper will serve the school in various ways. Students will
run the newspaper and most of the articles will be written from their point of
view. The paper will feature events happening at Rocky Hill, important local,
state and national news. Students will learn to react to news information. The
newspaper will include the following topics:
Comics, editorials, entertainment, fashion, international affairs, news and
information, national security issues, opinions, sports advertisement, writer’s
corner.

Description of Activity –
The Rocky Hill Chess Club is for students of all playing levels, especially
beginners. The club meets once a week and receives instruction in opening,
middle game and endgame strategies. All should prepare themselves for a chess
ladder and a ranking system. Each player’s ranking will be based on points
earned in four categories; participation, match play, sportsmanship and skill
development. Players reaching a high level will be rewarded. There may be chess
tournaments for interested players. All equipment will be provided including
chess boards, chess pieces and timers which are United States Chess
Federation tournament approved.

Description of Activity –
The Countdown has begun 3.. 2.. 1.. Blast Off!
On Thursday, September 19 and 25 of 2013, the Rocky Hill STEM Club took to
the skies with a series of bottle rocket launches. The launches were witnessed
by several intramural teams as the rockets' altitude soared higher than 170
meters, which is approximately 2 football fields high. The rockets adorned the
skies in a series of 9 launches. They were created by the STEM Club's 16 eager
rocket engineers as they went through classroom training, engineering design
process, and pre-launch certification.
STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics. The
program is designed to introduce students to a variety of activities that will
help prepare them for learning and working in the global community. The
program activities include, rocketry, aeronautics, chemistry, robotics, and video
editing to name a few.

The Model UN club will provide students with the opportunity to learn about
issues facing the world through United Nations simulations. Students will
prepare for these simulations through research, writing, negotiations, and public
speaking.

Description of Activity –
Each week, students will learn and play a new sport, like corn hole, Frisbee disc
golf, whiffle ball, dodge ball, and horseshoes. Hopefully, the sports will be new
and different to the students.

Description of Activity –
Cooking with Ms. S is a social club that combines following directions and
working with others to achieve a food product for the entire group. Participants
make the meal, help serve each other and clean up together. Foods prepared are
voted on by club ahead of time and chosen by Mrs. Santmyer based on the
cooking level of the group.

Description of Activity –
Students will get together to learn, participate, and enjoy fantasy football.
Students will also be able to work on their computer and math skills when
calculating weekly scores. This club will allow students to make new friends,
enjoy friendly competition, and discuss and learn NFL concepts and news.

Description of Activity –
Book Wars is an opportunity for MCPS middle school students to share their
love of reading with others while participating in a competition that promotes
teamwork and sportsmanship. Students will compete with four other MCPS
middle schools to test their knowledge of 10 preselected middle school age
appropriate books for mandatory reading that encompasses varying reading
levels, diversities, and genres. Three teams of 5 students each will represent
each school in a friendly competition that challenges each team to earn points
by working together in 30 second rounds. The winning team houses the county
trophy for a year. There is also an award for the team that shows the most
team spirit, camaraderie, and respect for all involved.

Description of Activity –
Students will share their love of reading with others by participating in the RH
book club. The book club meetings will come to life through discussions and
activities that will allow us to share our love of reading with the RH community.
Examples of activities include writing book reviews for the school newspaper
and reading the Black Eyed Susan nominated picture books to elementary aged
children in our feeder schools.

Students will play current board games, as well as traditional games. The club
will foster relationships, teamwork, cooperation, and a healthy sense of

Description of Activity –
The purpose of this Golf program would be to provide instruction and exposure
to the golf sport. Many students at Rocky Hill Middle School may not have the
ability to learn to play golf, due to family funds, access to a course, or lack of
education on the game. Golf is considered a lifelong, competitive and/or leisure

sport. The sport can provide many health benefits, including cardiovascular
fitness with walking the course, range of motion in flexibility, muscular strength
and endurance with carrying and swinging the clubs. Golf is a social sport and
can be used to keep in touch with friends personally and/or in the business
world throughout life. This will be an exciting experience for Rocky Hill
students because we will learn the rules/etiquette, how/why to use different
clubs, and how to swing the golf club from different distances and various
terrain. The golf program will be open for at least 10 students with a minimum
of 3 students. We will have classroom and tutorials on the school’s campus to
prepare for a real experience at a local public course.

Description of Activity –
"Fit For Life" is a club that will meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for all girls
who would like to learn how to take care of their physical fitness needs at their
own pace. We will work on our cardio-vascular fitness, muscular strength and
endurance, as well as our flexibility. Along with the physical fitness aspect of
"Fit For Life", we will also have student led discussions about the mental and
social health of teenage girls. We will discuss safety, bullying, drama, cyber
bullying and anything else that affects their lives. So, if you're looking for a
safe place to get your workout on and learn how to take care of yourself in any
situation, join us!

Intramurals
2014-2015
Rocky Hill’s Intramural Program is an extension of the regular physical
education instructional program. It involves sports and recreational
activities for our students conducted after school.
Students will be provided a variety of interesting, diverse and challenging
activities to accommodate differing levels of need, skill, and readiness. The
primary reason for participation is enjoyment of the activity rather than the
pressure to win. This environment will enable students to grow, develop
positive attitudes, and enjoy positive social interactions with their
classmates.
The following activities are just a few of the activities offered during
intramurals:

Wrestling Badminton Street Hockey
An announcement will be made the week before new activities or sports
begin. They will also be posted on the bulletin board near the gym and
announced during P.E. classes.
Students will need to turn in an intramural permission slip to Ms. Brouillard
in order to participate.

Interscholastic Sports
2014-2015
The MCPS Middle School Interscholastic Athletic Program is a planned
extension of the physical education instructional and intramural level of
competition. Tryouts are required to be selected as a member of an
interscholastic sports team. Tryouts are open to 7th and 8th grade students
only. The primary purpose is to provide the opportunity for advanced skill
development for all students with interests and /or talents in athletics.

Fall Season SOFTBALL and CO-ED CROSS COUNTRY for girls and boys –
Grades 7 & 8
Winter Season BASKETBALL for girls and boys – Grades 7 & 8
Spring Season SOCCER for girls and boys – Grades 7 & 8
Try-out dates are announced in the Rocky Hill Review, PTA Newsletter,
through P.E. classes, on the web, and posted on the P.E. bulletin board.
In order to try-out all students must meet the following requirements:
Meet MCPS Academic eligibility requirements
Be in either 7th or 8th grade (6th grade is not eligible to try-out)
Submit a completed and current health evaluation (within the last
2 calendar years)
Submit a parent permission form
