Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower

L ocated on the east side of Huangpu River, near the Lujiazuei

International Financial Distr ict - a str ik ing contrast to the neo-classical buildings along the Bund on the opposite r iver bank , Shanghai Oriental Pear l T V Tower is not only the most remarkable building in Shanghai , but has become the symbolic icon that i l luminates the energetic and cultural image of Shanghai City that continuously showcases her beauty to the world.

Shanghai Oriental Pear l T V Tower was built and completed on 1 October 1994. Though twenty years have come and gone, this iconic Tower has seen an influx of thousands and upon thousands of visitors from all over the world, coming together to embrace the beauty of this Pear l Tower.

As planned, the outdoor l ighting system has been re -designed and renovated ever y decade in order to usher in a new era that shows the best of her beauty to the world. This year, 2014, marks Phase 2 of the renovation, which stands for the most advanced outdoor l ighting design and technology. I t is expected to attain the world-class level as well as showing the culture, technology, innovation, romance and irresist ible charm that surprises al l visitors al l over the world not only to behold but to gain an amazing experience.

As a symbolic icon of Shanghai , the success of the project is attr ibuted to not only its economic outcome but also polit ical process. Once completed, the Music and Lighting Show wil l be per formed in front of al l over the world, and the “cost ” of any operational fai lure cannot be measurable and not permissible to happen for cer tain festivals. And that is why there is high rel iabil ity standard that requires ever y par t to be subjected to str ingent test . Approval to put specif ied equipment into operational usage is only granted upon exhaustive and successful experiment.

To promote the rel iabil ity and the adaptation to the Shanghai Oriental Pear l Tower, StrongLED has identif ied some key features of the Pear l Tower and upgraded some key functions of its or iginal Versal inkTM Outdoor Lighting Control System as detai led below :

Ring Topology Fiber Optics NetworkStrongLED has developed and applied the r ing topology to connect the Master Controllers to al l the sub-controllers. Two (2) main controllers are programmed as back-up to each other, and signals are sent out from two directions - clockwise and anti-clockwise to each sub-controllers respectively. Each sub-controller receives signals from two directions simultaneously so that they could always receive signals from one direction even there is unexpected breakdown that could happen on the other direction and thus keeping the Show going.

Dual Active Back-up System StrongLED has implemented dual (2) Master Controllers in a back-to-back control system configuration. These two (2) Master Controllers always maintain the same condition and release the same signals. On the other hand, each sub-controller is equipped with two (2) electronic sub-systems for processing the two (2)

incoming directional signals, and the two electronic sub-systems are independent and active simultaneously. Once the default incoming signal is lost , the sub-controller wil l be automatical ly switched to the other signal source. The switch-over t ime is less than 0.1ms which is hardly noticeable during the Show.

Fur thermore, once a signal is lost , the Master Controller wil l activate an alarm to mobil ize the technicians to attend to fai lure.

EMI Resistance of Device PortsAll I/O por ts of sub-controllers which connect to the LED luminaires and control system use opto-couplers. Opto-coupler is able to isolate electro-magnetic, static and l ightning inter ferences effectively so that al l Controllers and Master Control System would be protected, and thus enhances the rel iabil ity and integrity of the whole system.

Challenge: Strong Electro-magnetic inter ferences and extra-long spans of signal transmission

Solution : In this project, StrongLED uses f iber optics to connect the master controllers and al l sub-

79

controllers. Fiber optics has the specialty of high-eff iciency transmission, and 100% resistance from EMI inter ferences as well as l ightning. Plus, f iber optics is also capable for long spans and the multimode can cover a span of 2,000 meters while the single mode can exceed 20,000 meters!

The r ing-shape topology f iber optics network from StrongLED is proven to provide a rel iable signal transmission from the basement to the top of the Tower since the topology al lows it to do without any splices. Also, the control system works smoothly and well under such high-EMI pollution environment.

Challenge : Large Scale of Controll ing Points and Ranges

Solution : Versal inkTM StrongLED proprietar y outdoor l ighting control system has a real-t ime player. The signals transfer from the master controller to sub-controllers, from sub-controllers to sub-controllers, and from sub-controllers to luminaires form as a network . Each l ighting node refers to as a pixel is mapped on master controller. This has al lowed the l ighting effects to be dr iven by the Flash f i les playing on the display monitor of the master controller with al l the colors and brightness change synchronously. And the refresh rate of the screen of the master controller is exactly the same as the real l ighting show. The maximum coverage of

VersaLinkTM is controll ing up to 1024x512x4 (2,090,000) pixels at 60 Hz refresh rate. Therefore it has easi ly met the specif ications of 150,000 control nodes and 30 Hz refresh rate for this project.

Challenge : The irregular ity of the instal lation posit ions and signal connections of luminaires and controllers

Solution: As a highly experienced outdoor l ighting and control system total solution provider, StrongLED has accumulated a large pool of patented innovative LED control technologies. One of these invention patents is the “method of displaying undistor ted video and images on any ir regular and complex geometr ical shapes display layout made up of LED pixels”. This proprietar y technology applies power ful application-specif ic computing algorithms that al low the video show to be displayed without distor tion and smoothly even while the LED pixels ( luminaires) differ in physical 3D posit ions. This way, in spite of the physical i r regular it ies, the master controller can record and remember the relationships of ever y single wir ing connection, instal lation posit ion, and logical posit ions of each of the luminaire or pixel. This technology actualizes the expectation of controll ing irregular placements through real t ime transformation of signals and parsing to the luminaires in a regular and eff icient way.

Challenge: The integrated control of multiple types of luminaires

Solution: The 9 types of outdoor l ighting luminaires can be classif ied into 2 main categories of control methods. The display screen on the steps in the front square uses ser ial shift dr ive control method, while the rest are controlled under DMX512 mode. For the luminaires of DMX512 control mode, LED RGB l inear l ight needs 3 channels for R, G, B, respectively. RGBW flood l ight requires 4 channels of R, G, B, W, respectively. LED strobe l ight requires 2 channels for the br ightness and refresh rate. The Space Capsule cross-shape l ight requires 5 channels for R, G, B, refresh rate and brightness. LED node pixel l ights on the facades of the 2 Spheres of the Tower each requires 6 channels for R, G, B, W, refresh rate and brightness. As for the 7,000W Projector l ight, it requires 16 channels for color, br ightness, on/off, projection angles in X & Y axis directions and projection angle changing speed…etc.

All the factors mentioned above need to be coordinated and al l luminaires and signals should be placed under one integrated control system.

Different from all other l ighting equipment and luminaires providers, StrongLED has its own range of proprietar y products and technology that not only includes 3 main ser ies of luminaires, City Lite, i -City Vision, and City Pear l, but also its control system including VersaLinkTM l ighting control system and StrongPlayerTM master control software. StrongLED comprehensively holds the key capabil it ies from A (control system) to Z ( luminaires design and manufacture) . As a result , StrongLED has earned the outstanding capabil ity and proven track record of highly customization of design, development,

upgrade, modif ication of both hardware and software products. That is why StrongLED can always meet and satisfy cl ients’ wide var iety of demands.

StrongLED has developed its customized master control software for the project ’s unique requirement, “Shanghai Oriental Pear l Tower Lighting and Sound Show Control System”. This control system can individually sor t and arrange the data format of each type of l ights, and transfer the data and output signal according to the instal lation posit ion and the signal connection conditions. This ensures that al l different types of luminaires can receive r ight types of signal and match the expectation of coordinating and integrated master control.

Challenge: To synchronize the l ighting effects, music and controls

Solution: StrongLED has developed “Shanghai Oriental Pear l Tower Lighting and Sound Show Control System” especial ly for this project, the core functions cover not only the integrated control of different types of l ights, but also integrated music and mechanical movement into the control. In the control software, al l luminaires on the Tower are reference to each single pixel in a Flash animation f i le showing on the computer screen. The Flash f i le defines al l the colors and brightness of al l the luminaires as well as the projection angles of the laser and projector l ights. Lighting designers can easi ly enter the degrees of the projection angle of cer tain pictures in the Flash f i le. Once it plays to those set pictures, the lasers and the projector l ights wil l cast the l ights to the predefined angles accordingly.

For music synchronization, there are two modes available on the system, Music Output and Music Input.

Music Output ModeIn this mode, the input source is a Flash f i le with music. While the f i le is being played; the music wil l be channeled, after amplif ication, to the outdoor speakers at the Tower grand entrance square, while the Flash video wil l dr ive

the luminaires to per form al l the l ighting effects. With such mode, the visitors can enjoy and appreciate a wonder ful l ighting display and music show.

Music Input ModeIn this mode, the music wil l be input from

external sources such as microphone. Using a predefined designer l ighting effects program, the music is f i rst processed by the digital sound

processor [DSP] into a digital frequency spectrum to tr igger the l ighting effects.

The real t ime operating software wil l match and synchronize the music and

changing l ighting effects.

ACCOMPLISHMENT & ACCOLADES“A Romantic Surprise for the World”

The Shanghai Pear l Tower Lightings and Music Show was off icial ly launched 1st May 2014. I t not only brought visitors from all over the world an amazing surprise, but also drew the attention of public media. The event was widely reported by SMG (Shanghai Media Group) and the Oriental Daily Press. Meanwhile, in addition to the large number of the patents StrongLED have on hand, the patent of “Remote Real-t ime Control” has also been off icial ly authorized, which has fur ther established StrongLED as a Leading LED l ighting and system Solution Provider. ■

Species, A residential sound wall turned into a stunning ar t work

A s par t of the percent for ar t scheme applied in Western Austral ia , visual ar t ist R ick Vermey was

asked to develop an ar twork for two residential sound walls, one located at the intersection of Murdoch Drive and South Street and the other fur ther down along South Street, near the corner with Fiona Wood Drive half way between Per th and Fremantle. When developing his ar twork the idea of using graphical ly per forated steel to depict locally relevant imager y quick ly fermented into the use of l ighting as a major element in the ar twork . R ick and Martin, who know each other from other successful collaborations, came together to develop a l ighting concept that would not only val idate and enhance the ar twork to greater heights, but in the process also str ingently kept an eye on road and public safety. The result is a l ighting design with amazing visual effects which brings an element of pleasance and peacefulness in an other wise nondescr ipt amenity wall .Key consideration to the design was the desire to integrate the l ighting in an ful ly inconspicuous way, out of sight for the general public and in so doing maximising the expression of the ar twork . This was achieved in two ways; one to locate the l ights behind the screen (el iminating physical l ight f itt ings) , two; by creating a shadow frame around the ar twork concealing the l ights from direct view (el iminating potential glare) . The aim of the l ighting design was to focus on the effects not the l ighting f itt ings, reinforcing the basic intent of the ar twork .

Page 10: 2014AL001 Lighting Today.pdf 1 10/4/14 2:01 PMtradelinkmedia.s3.amazonaws.com › 2014 › 09 › 17 › 18 › 23 › ... · node pixel lights on the facades of the 2 Spheres of

At the or igin of the ar twork are images that have a strong connection to the local vulnerable f lora and fauna species identif ied with the adjacent remnant bush environment, the Quenda Wetlands. In developing the l ighting concept these were taken into consideration. The ear thly mater ial ity of the raw, natural f inish of the rustic and industr ial appearing steel screens during the day is surprisingly contrasted at night by means of str ik ing colours creating near photo-real ist ic images at night. The colours chosen for the back l ighting of the screens were selected based on colours the ar tist associated with the indigenous Nnoongar seasons, supplemented with dynamic high l ights enhancing key elements of the ar twork features one by one.

Inherent to the design at al l t imes was to assure road safety and public safety. In terms of road safety this was achieved in several ways. First the l ighting was concealed to avoid any possibi l ity of glare. Secondly the l ighting effects were design to be non-distracting, with any dynamic effect or changes programmed to take effect over a prolonged time avoiding any sudden changes of colour or br ightness that could possibly distract dr ivers. In terms of public safety the l ight f itt ings were integrated and located in such way that direct public access was not possible. Located high in the back of the panels the l ight f itt ings are out of direct reach of the public. On another note the duration of highlight transit ion has been timed to coincide with duration of red l ight stopping at the intersection.

By aiming the l ights downwards any environmental spil l was el iminated and al l l ight was used to it ’s maximum potential and eff iciency. The choice of l ighting technology was LED l ighting minimising the energy consumption to a minimum while it ’s

Page 11: 2014AL001 Lighting Today.pdf 1 10/4/14 2:01 PMtradelinkmedia.s3.amazonaws.com › 2014 › 09 › 17 › 18 › 23 › ... · node pixel lights on the facades of the 2 Spheres of

85

longevity assured Main Roads of a worr y-free maintenance that is expected to be down to a routine check once a year with practical ly zero maintenance expected over the next couple of years.

The l ights are pre-programmed with different scenes, one for regular weekdays, one for weekends and with special programs for special seasons or events. They operate on sensor and timing without any need for manual inter ference by the cl ient. Any fault occurrence is registered by the control system and fed back to the cl ient ’s maintenance team.

The budget has been an integral and cr it ical par t of the design from day one. While Main Roads did not have a par ticular budget in mind for the l ighting perse there was a general budget set aside for the overal l project. As we developed the l ighting design, we also consulted with the cl ient on the budget. Init ial ly found to be too high and exceeding the overal l budget, once exposed to the innovative ideas of the l ighting opportunities and the creative effects that could be real ised, Main Roads adjusted the budget to f it and the project was then completed within the available funds.

Overal l the project was completed within budget and Main Roads t ime schedule, with a technology (LED) assuring the cl ient minimum maintenance and maximum energy saving. The choice of l ight f itt ings, its location and it ’s result ing l ighting effect result in stunning night t ime experience, yet suff iciently subdued with great visual comfor t as not to distract public road safety. The project has been running nightly and has become a recognisable landmark feature for al l road users along South Street and Murdoch Drive adding a sense of proudness to the immediate residence in the area. ■

F ocus Lighting worked with Frederic Schwartz Architects

to create a warm, inviting atmosphere throughout the massive 100,000-square-foot Barnes & Noble Nook Headquarters. Soft, integrated lighting emphasizes the architecture’s clean lines while decorative lighting treatments conjure a sense of playfulness.

A cloud of decorative pendants brings the double height lobby to a comfortable, human scale and provides a memorable focal point upon entry. Beyond the lobby seating area, MR16 LED downlights il luminate the merchandise within the Nook Store. Soft, white light grazes the wooden wall panels, providing a warm background for the decorative pendants. For an added layer of l ight, MR16 downlights integrated into the ceiling il luminate the sur faces below to help create a bright and airy atmosphere. A band of l inear LEDs integrated into the ceiling defines the lower lobby space and ties the first floor offices together.

In the conference room, Focus Lighting designed a central l ighting feature inspired by the engineering nature of the office. A complex geometric acrylic panel conceals a l ightbox with linear LEDs. Adjustable MR16 LED downlights are integrated into the lightbox and acrylic panel to accent the work sur face below. Multiple mock-ups determined the proper light quality and exact placement of frost and custom metal panels that block out excess light.

Photo sensors adjust l ight levels as daylight shifts to maintain an even quality of l ight. Override switches allow user customization of their workspace. As a spin on regimented office lighting, custom-designed LED fixtures arranged in a haphazard fashion create a playful design feature that highlights the circulation within the space. The selection of highly engineered fixtures maximized coverage and minimized the number of fixtures needed while evenly il luminating both workplane sur faces and the ceiling plane. MR16 downlights provide the per fect counterpoint to the general office lighting, accenting the art work as focal points within the space.

Strict energy codes and a tight budget called for careful balancing of the number of treatments and types of sources used. High-efficiency LEDs and fluorescent sources helped minimize costs and maintenance needs. Despite these constraints, Focus Lighting achieved the softer, residential quality of l ight desired through careful research and multiple mock-ups. ■

There are a mill ion different things that can affect the degree of difficulty of a l ighting brief.

Time and money are the two most quoted. But you can add the availability of components, the condition of the project being lit , sustainability requirements, the weather, wildlife, locals support/non support, conflict of creative ideas etc, etc. Almost anything can get in the way if you let it . But the best way forward is to always embrace the parameters attached to any given project and give it your all.

Such was the case when award winning lighting consultancy PointOfView was briefed to provide lighting for Hotel Hotel, the latest addition to the Molonglo Group’s portfolio of (well) hotels located in Australia’s capital city, Canberra.

The degree of difficulty here was imposed by Nectar Efkarpidis, Director of the Molonglo Group. “While the brief was pretty open, he had a vision for an hotel unlike any other. Like a luxury shack in the city,” said Mark Ell iott, Director of PointOfView. Molonglo Group also embraced an ethos that celebrated sustainability, diversity, community and lifestyle.

Hotel Hotel is located in NewActon, the cultural center of Canberra. I t has 68 rooms and 31 apartments by architects Fender Katselidis with interior design by the London based Don Cameron. No two rooms are alike. Bespoke furniture, natural materials, ar t and ‘Objects Trouve’ feature throughout. Of special significance is the entrance staircase which is constructed entirely from salvaged timber.

“At the earliest meetings it was clear from the client ’s passion and the caliber of the design team being assembled (including Cameron, March Studio)

that excellence was key.” said Mark Ell iott, Principal of PointOfView.” Don Cameron comes from a music video background and it is his aesthetic that brings the shabby-chic to Hotel Hotel.”

Cameron is working closely with Nectar and the management team on the guestrooms, public space, soft furnishings and styling. March Studio is well known for their design of the Aesop Stores and has an amazing ability to see the design in inanimate objects.

The combination of the two designers with the architects delivered sensational space with which to work ,” says Ell iott. “But that is only part of the picture. He continues, “ Molonglo has a strong desire to follow through with their ecological ambitions and the associated additional costs.”

“For example, as a l ighting designer, I stil l love the quality of l ight delivered via a halogen lamp,” said Ell iott. “Nectar quashed this direction in favor of his over-riding desire to create a sustainable project. And so it was LED throughout”.

Hotel Hotel is located over three floors within the Nishi Residential Building on the shores of Lake Burley

Griffin, a fifteen minute bike ride from the city and a two hour drive from some of Australia’s premier sk i fields.

“Everyone is aware of how important lighting is to a space, especially in hospitality where you want to make clients feel and look their best,” said Ell iott. “At the same time architects and designers want to minimize the impact of l ight fittings in their space and that is why we always have a philosophy of integrating the light.”

Also adding to the degree of difficulty for this project however, Molonglo had issued clear instructions to PointOfView at the outset that any lighting design should not appear ‘slick ’. I t had to be honest in its delivery with a careful balance of integrated design and purposefully obvious fittings that harmonized with the interiors.

In the guestrooms for example, there are integrated cove and joinery details

providing ambient light to accent the raw materials used, while the down lights are sur face mounted spots each with a custom bracket so they don’t look out of place on the concrete slabs on which they are located. This attention to detail is critical for daytime appearance of the rooms. “ The night time experience is very sexy,” said Ell iott.

“ There are no blanket standards here for l ight levels,” said Ell iott, “which are often much higher than a lighting designer would prefer. This project was always about pushing the limits of darkness and functionality.”

Canberra is known as Australia’s bush capital. I t is surrounded by eucalyptus forests and wildlife. The NewActon is its new cultural hub. Hotel Hotel fits r ight in. Just not in the way you might expect.

“ This is really something out of the ordinary ” concludes Elliott, “but it ’s our, out of the ordinary, here for everyone to appreciate and enjoy.” ■

BackgroundGreenwood Plaza is a bustling shopping precinct located in the heart of North Sydney. In need of a refresh, the Plaza has undergone a number of key upgrades that according to architect Crone Partners, gives visitors a chance to ‘escape the everyday ’.

Mirvac engaged Crone Partners and Philips to design a lighting solution that would seamlessly bring together the Plaza’s seven major zones; effectively strik ing a balance between achieving building aesthetics to enhance the visitor experience, while reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs.

The combination of Philips LED lighting technology and uniformity of the new ceiling design work in harmony to improve the flow of pedestrian traffic, effectively guiding the 18.7 mill ion visitors per annum through the Plaza.

ChallengePrior to the refurbishment, l ighting at the shopping centre comprised a wide range of l ight fixtures and fittings. The eclectic mix of old incandescent and fluorescent lighting technologies, as well as varying levels of ar tificial and natural l ight, combined to create a disjointed experience for visitors to the centre.

For the facility manager, the use of out-dated lighting technologies also meant the centre faced high energy consumption costs and ongoing maintenance pressures.

SolutionPhilips’ Lighting Solutions team worked collaboratively with Crone Partners on a simplified lighting scheme, using two versatile Philips LED luminaire styles across the entire project.

The 450 economical and energy-efficient LED fittings were installed qualifying the Plaza for energy savings certificates. As a result of the switch to LED, Greenwood Plaza has saved 26,405-k ilowatt hours, with its LUX levels improving greatly.

The lighting upgrade has also ensured that l ighting is more evenly distributed across the centre and luminaire output is maximised for a retail environment (CRI80).

Supporting the vision of bringing the outdoor nature of Greenwood into the centre and to ensure a seamless transition between naturally and artificially l it areas, ar tificial l ighting on the upper floors reflects the light levels in the existing naturally l it atriums.

“ Through the building upgrade, we now have a unique lighting solution that is visually appealing to centre visitors and, at the same time, has dramatically reduced Greenwood Plaza’s energy consumption and ongoing maintenance costs,” said Albert Messaike, Retail Development Manager, Mirvac.

BenefitsA switch to Philips LED technology means Mirvac now has a quality l ighting solution with the flexibility and convenience of a l imited number of luminaire designs with improved energy efficiency and reduced maintenance; all combining to produce significant cost savings.

The LEDs also produce less heat in comparison to previously installed light sources leading to further savings in air-conditioning costs and better climate control. In addition to supplying the new LED products, the Philips Lighting Solutions team provided lighting design and certification for the project.

“ The potential of l ight in a building is enormous. By working with the team at Philips we had access to professionals who know the technology and importantly, know how to apply the technology through considered lighting design,” said Michael Banak, Director, Crone Partners. ■

The Razavi Hospital in I ran provides the latest medical care across a 56,000 square metre

state of the heart facility. The hospital offers high quality medical services such as a Cardiac Surgery ward, Plastic Surgery ward, Radiology, Laboratory and IVF. Razavi Hospital also includes a 35,000 square metre education and clinical research facility department using medical specialists and non-medical personnel.

Working closely with local partners such as Pars Idea Stack , Zumtobel helped plan, install and commission the lighting solution for the complete project. This includes over a k ilometre of recessed SLOTLIGHT, providing orientation in the corridors for the patients and staff working long hours and per fectly fulfi l l ing the architectural requirements.

Parallel l ight l ines above the conference and meeting room areas offer excellent visibility during meetings and add a special design feature to the rooms. PANOS Q supports the homogeneous light distribution throughout the hospital.

MIREL and LIGHTFIELDS were used for the lobby and administration offices. LIGHTFIELDS blends per fectly with the architecture and supports the vision of the designer by placing the emphasis on light, and not on the luminaire itself.

SLOTLIGHT LED RGB is used in PET (Positron Emission Tomography) and CT (Computed Tomography) rooms. Together with LUXMATE EMOTION lighting control, different scenes can be set to give a particular atmosphere. This is especially important after a PET-CT scan, helping manage patient responses to ensure that the scan results are as effective as possible. ■

The design of Mindtree’ Digital Business Centre (DBIZ) located in Bangalore’s west campus is a reflection of its slogan: “Welcome to possible”.

Page 34: 2014AL001 Lighting Today.pdf 1 10/4/14 2:01 PMtradelinkmedia.s3.amazonaws.com › 2014 › 09 › 17 › 18 › 23 › ... · node pixel lights on the facades of the 2 Spheres of

The design concept for DBIZ proposed by CnT Architects was to create a sculptural object that engages space on the inside and outside. The form of the enclosure is inspired by a cocoon and consists of several spliced layers to enable this engagement. The space itself is divided into several zones depending upon the various activities and functions: collaboration and immersion zone for client interaction; reflection zone for the support staff ; and recharge zone for relaxation. The lighting design concept proposed by Lighting Research & Design was to create a distinct identity for each of these zones with a different lighting treatment that reinforces the architectural form and enhances its associated activities.

The collaboration and immersion zone consists of two different types of client interactions: face-to-face interaction with the staff and immersive interaction with the software solutions using interactive walls and tables. A bespoke 6.6m diameter r ing-shaped LED luminaire was specially designed in collaboration with the manufacturer Prolicht. The idea was to create one seamless lighting object to delineate this zone. The reflection zone consists of regular worktops for the staff to work on computers. However, downlights were not

an option due to the ceiling height restriction and the battery of cables and AC ducts running directly above this zone. Therefore a customised task lighting solution was provided by means of LED tape integrated within a pelmet directly above the worktop to provide soft i l lumination for working on computers. The relaxation zone consists of seating where the clients and staff can relax and rejuvenate after a task ing session. As the entire space is completely cut-off from any exterior views, the lighting concept was to create an artificial window that mimics the transition from day to night based on the time of day. The entire wall behind the guest seating area is l it using RGB colour changing LED tape that is programmed to create scenes that simulate the various times of day and then fade between those scenes over a 24-hour period. ■

Paediatric Practice

Since December 2013, the paediatric practice of Doctor Uhlig & colleagues

can be found in the premises of a former print shop in Hamburg’s Harvestehude district. The client ’s main concern was the creation of a modern practice with a fr iendly ambiance for its l ittle patients whilst, at the same time, keeping the historic heritage of the building alive. With spatial requirements in a print shop obviously varying quite significantly from those in a paediatric practice, the architects of Henrik Diemann faced a particular challenge. Today, the loft-type commercial premises with the visible steel girders and posts are divided into patient examination rooms and a waiting area, connected by a corridor. All rooms were sound insulated where necessary and “set” into the floor without reaching all the way up to the ceiling. The intelligently devised interior concept from the designer Christiane von Wietersheim matches a special l ighting concept per fectly, maintaining the industrial charm of the premises.

111

Page 38: 2014AL001 Lighting Today.pdf 1 10/4/14 2:01 PMtradelinkmedia.s3.amazonaws.com › 2014 › 09 › 17 › 18 › 23 › ... · node pixel lights on the facades of the 2 Spheres of

ERCO lighting tools i l luminate the rooms with accentuated light, creating a really pleasant atmosphere. Developed in close dialogue with the client, the lighting concept for the paediatric practice had been tested earlier in ERCO’s showroom as well as on site. The dimmable LED spotlights Optec and Cantax were provided with interchangeable Spherolit lenses for highly uniform wall i l lumination. In harmony with the spatial concept, they are mounted on tracks to ensure maximum flexibility. Optec LED spotlights with RGBW technology complement their ambient lighting role by adding bril l iant highlights. The resulting effects create an atmosphere which is quite unique for a medical practice – with visible benefits for both staff and patients. ■

room’s wir ing ran back to central ised cabinets and due to newly instal led cei l ings; some of these were covered, which made them diff icult to access.

The Solution Thanks to Energi Tr iPak®, bui lding services engineer ing company, MJD, was able to replace the exist ing l ight switches with the wireless retrof i t solut ion in under 30 minutes in each room. Each room was retrof i t ted with three Lutron PowPak; one in the suspended cei l ing in the bathroom, another in the AC box at the entrance to the room and a f inal one underneath the bed (to enable wir ing to the f loor lamp). Three Lutron Pico keypads were used to replace the exist ing l ight switches. The Pico® control lers were programmed to talk to one or more of the PowPak wirelessly.

The ResultsAs a result of the wireless nature of Lutron’s latest retrof i t l ight control solut ion, Energi Tr iPak, i t was possible to f i t out the ent ire 588 rooms with minimal noise and disturbance.

This avoided any loss of customer bookings and meant the project was completed 15% faster than with standard switches. Also, as the fabr ic of the room was untouched, no redecorat ion costs were incurred. As a result of the instal lat ion, the fol lowing savings were achieved:

• Avoided loss of revenue of approximately €600,000 (£518,325)

• Redecorat ion savings of €499,800 (£431,465)• In total , savings of almost €1.1m (£950,486) in

Raindrop Chandelier – “The Pour”

Designer: Lisa Hinderdael and Dara HuangPhotographer: Lauren ColemanLocation: New York City, NY USA

The Raindrop chandel ier, “The Pour” is a l ight sculpture DH Liberty was commissioned to design in Tr ibeca, New York City. The exist ing site features exposed industr ia l columns on either end of a dropped beam within the l iv ing room. The design br ief was to produce a l ight sculpture that would hang off of the exist ing beam and create an architectural re lat ionship with the space.

DH Liberty began the design process by explor ing the concept of rain and how each water droplet magnif ies l ight in unique ways. Simi lar to the character of rain fa l l ing and creat ing varying r ipple sizes on the surface of puddles.

Page 45: 2014AL001 Lighting Today.pdf 1 10/4/14 2:01 PMtradelinkmedia.s3.amazonaws.com › 2014 › 09 › 17 › 18 › 23 › ... · node pixel lights on the facades of the 2 Spheres of

119

DH Liberty worked with UK-based glass-blowers and metal engineers to create the crystal tear-drops. Each drop is hand blown by art isans and intr icately engineered to house the l ight ing strategy for the chandel ier. The drop i tsel f is constructed of two parts: the brass screw cap, which houses the l ight, and the hand-blown crystal ref lect ing the l ight to create puddles on the f loor below. To repl icate the nature of raindrops, no two drops are blown ident ical.

The name “The Pour” der ives from the dist inct ive shape that the chandel ier forms: an exaggerat ion of the dramatic motion of water pouring out of a carafe. Designed by forming a gr id mimicking how puddles r ipple outward in concentr ic circ les, each teardrop is hung to brass pipes of varying lengths. Placed strategical ly on the gr id, the teardrops lock into the mirrored base that f i ts seamlessly between the two exist ing columns. The mirrored base ref lects the teardrops endlessly into the sky above and when l i t . The chandel ier echoes rain frozen in t ime with ephemeral puddles over la id on the f loor below.

EXPLOSION PROOF LED LIGHT

By LarSon ELEctronicS

www.larsonelectronics.com

Larson Electronics' EPL-48-2L-LED explosion proof LED light fixture is U.S./Canada U.L. approved Class 1 Division 1 & 2 and Class 2 Division 1 & 2 for areas where flammable chemical/petrochemical vapors exist or have the potential to exist. This explosion proof LED light has a T6 temperature rating and carries a paint spray booth light certification as well. The ballast box that is normally associated with fluorescent fixtures has been eliminated which reduces the overall weight and creates a slimmer unit profile. The solid state design of the LED lamps give this fixture superior resistance to damage from vibration, extremes in temperature and a lamp service life over twice that of standard T8 bulbs. The 24 Watt LED lamps produce more illumination and draw less power than a T8 bulb. This fixture is multi-voltage and

operates on any voltage from 120V to 277V.

CHIODOBy pLatEk Light

www.platek.eu

Chiodo is a new Platek Light product for 2014 which goes to join the already broad range of LED lights offered by the company. The minimal design and ability to withstand any climatic conditions make Chiodo an interesting addition to

top-quality performance areas.

The outstanding features of Chiodo are mobility and ease of installation: though connected to the power supply by a cable and thanks to its ‘plough’ stake, it is in fact only ‘planted’ in the ground so it can be moved as required to form different layouts. What is more, the carbon fiber stand sways in the

wind, creating a pleasant ‘suspension’ feeling.

Chiodo has been designed to cater to temporary lighting requirements or for businesses like restaurants needing to change area layouts. The light source is a 230V C.O.B. and

does not therefore need a power supply unit.
