From Punishment to Restoration –

A UN Sunday service

The Rev. Paige Getty

Our Covenant:

Strengthened by our common humanity and inspired by our seven principles, we promise

to be a safe and welcoming community, to nurture each other’s hearts and spirits, to delight in the beauty of our diversity, to struggle together on our spiritual journeys, and to challenge each other to live our values.

Thus, we pledge our time and vigor to the continuing celebration of spirit, of the world, and of humankind.

CENTERING THOUGHT:

Restorative justice is not a map but the principles of restorative justice can be seen as a compass pointing a direction. At minimum, restorative justice is an invitation for dialogue and exploration.

EXTINGUISHING THE CHALICE Music Note: Unitarian Universalists have always been prominent among those seeking justice and equality in our society; our music reflects that reality: Israel Zangwill's great text celebrates our justice-seeking community; the new Silliman prize-winning hymn by the Hardin tells us “Pass on the light; carry it on”; and Jim Papoulis’ upbeat and stirring anthem (commissioned by our regional UU congregations) reminds us that “It’s the sound of hope that is calling… standing for freedom and justice.”

UPCOMING SUNDAY WORSHIP

Services are at 9:00 am and 11:00 am, unless otherwise noted

Nov 1 In this season when many people of faith are honoring memory and death in their unique ways, the Rev. Paige Getty and Anthony Jenkins will lead a multi-generational remembrance service, which has become a UUCC tradition.

Nov 8 As part of our occasional From the Margins series, the Rev. Paige

Getty reflects on different ways in which students and educators are marginalized in our educational systems.

Please plan to participate in small group conversations after the second worship service on November 8, as UUCC launches its listening campaign to hear from educators, students, parents, and community members, about challenges in Howard County public schools.

TODAY

COLLECTION FOR GIGGLE BOX LEARN AND PLAY! Isn't that a great name for a day care center? This one is right next-door to Penn North in Baltimore and serves inner-city children. The center is beautifully painted in cheery colors and well decorated and the sounds of happy children are in abundance. So, we are doing a collection TODAY for the children at this center. Please bring either new or nearly-new (and CLEAN) baby items: diapers, wipes, blankets, toys, etc. You can drop them off AFTER EACH SERVICE TODAY (only). And thank you for your generosity and thoughtfulness! - Rae and Cindy, Social Action Council Co-Chairs

LAST DAY TO ORDER! – ANNUAL WREATH FUNDRAISER FOR QUEST CLASS! Our 9th grade coming of age class, Quest, has begun its year of working, playing and growing together. A highlight of the Quest year is our spring-time pilgrimage to

Boston, birthplace of the UU movement in the US. The trip is costly - nearly $500 per person with transportation and lodging - but worth every penny in terms of learning and bonding. Please consider supporting this core curriculum at UUCC by buying your holiday wreaths from us. The wreaths, mini trees and centerpieces are gorgeous and come from the Mickman Brothers family farm in Minnesota. Mickman Brothers offers a Holiday Gift program, and will ship anywhere in the US. Ask our Questers for details. Check out our products at the wreath sales table in the lobby during coffee hour today. ONLINE SALES RUN THROUGH 10/31/2015. Contact Lisa Kehle, youth director, for more details [email protected].

ANNOUNCEMENTS WANT TO GET MORE INVOLVED IN COMMUNITY SERVICE OR SOCIAL JUSTICE? Please e-mail the Social Action Council at [email protected]. COLLECTION AT THE HALLOWEEN PARTY TONIGHT: HELP THE YOUTH MAKE 100's OF SNACK PACKS FOR THE KIDS SAFE ZONE! The middle school youth invite you to help them participate in a racial justice/social action event in November. The Penn North Community Resource Center in Baltimore opened the Kids Safe Zone this past spring in response to the uprising, addressing a critical need in the neighborhood. Kids drop in the center at will and get to be kids, be creative, play games, eat snacks and meals, and - above all - be safe. At our November 8th event, youth will hear from the founder of the Penn North Kids Safe Zone and learn about the Black Lives Matter movement. In addition, they will pack "snack packs" for the kids at the Kids Safe Zone. This project gives our congregation an opportunity to actively support this mission! In preparation, we will be collecting these items at the Halloween party TODAY and in the pantry between services on November 1st:

· Small juice pouches/boxes · Granola bars · Cheese crackers (single serving)

· Dried fruit (single serving) · Trail mix (single serving) · Goldfish or Pretzels (single serving)

If you have questions, contact Lynn Mumma, Youth Social Action Coordinator at [email protected] or Lisa Kehle, Youth Director at [email protected].
