Welcome Kankakee Commu-nity College student athletes, parents, Cavalier supporters and fans!

There is excitement and energy as we prepare for another year at KCC, and we are so happy to have all of you along for the journey. Each of our men’s and women’s teams had a successful year in 2014-2015, and a few had extraordinary accomplishments. Cavalier teams and players from last year experienced successful

winning seasons, national (NJCAA) rankings and tournament appearances, All-Americans and Academic All-Americans, a MLB 2015 draft pick, numerous All-Tournament players, a NJCAA Hall of Fame induction, a National Tournament MVP, and our KCC women’s softball team was your NJCAA Division II National Cham-pion. It was an amazing year for KCC, our teams, and our players. Even more amazing was watching the continued development, academically and personally, of our student athletes.

The 2015-2016 year also promises to be an exciting one for our teams and our players. I am proud of the role KCC plays in the overall growth of our student athletes, and equally proud of how

our Cavalier teams represent our excellent institution. The student athletes of KCC live our motto to Start Here – Finish Anywhere. It is my firm belief that education is the key to all of our life successes, and I remain committed to our mission to develop leaders. Our athletic program, and each sport, begin with the strong dedication of our complete coaching staff and are supported by the KCC Board of Trustees and our community. As parents and educators, we pledge to join your efforts to provide encouragement and sup-port to our student athletes.

I wish our student athletes success both as a student and an athlete at Kankakee Community College. SEASON PREVIEW

The Lady Cavaliers return to the hardwood intent on making a strong appearance at the Region IV Tournament.

The team finished with a record of 19 wins and 11 losses last year, and will feature 12 new freshmen, one transfer sophomore, and one returning sophomore. Success will depend on growth, leadership, and the ability of the newcomers to learn quick, listen, and be coachable.

Coach Donnie Denson will ask the freshmen to step up and make their presence felt on the offensive and defensive ends. The sopho-mores will be expected to lead by example and continue the hard-nosed style of play that has earned 19 National Tournament appear-ances in the past 25 years for the Lady Cavaliers.

The 2015-16 schedule has the Cavs facing off against South Suburban College, Moraine Valley C.C., Prairie State College, Morton College, and Rock Valley C.C. in Region IV. The schedule also takes the Cavaliers out of Region IV, as they play Kalamazoo Valley C.C., Danville Area C.C., Parkland College, Lake Michigan College, and Lake Land College.

The Lady Cavaliers expect to face several nationally ranked teams. The 2015-16 schedule includes five contests against Division I op-ponents, 19 with Division II teams, and three Division III teams that should give the Cavs the preparation necessary to compete for the regional championship crown.

ORTHOPEDIC ASSOCIATES OF KANKAKEE

ATHLETIC DIRECTORTed Petersen has been athletic director for KCC since November 2008. Previ-

ously, he served as athletic director for Upper St. Clair High School in Pennsyl-vania.

Petersen, a native of Momence, is a graduate of Eastern Illinois University where he served as co-captain and was a first team All-American for the football team. Petersen then played offensive tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1977-1984, a team which won Super Bowls XIII and XIV. He also played for the Cleveland Browns and Indianapolis Colts in 1984-1985 and finished his career with the Steelers in 1987.

Petersen and his wife, Marian, have one child, Samuel; and Petersen has two grown sons, Teddy and Garrett, from a previous marriage.

HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINERCandice Brackett, LAT, ATC, head athletic trainer at KCC, is a 2001 graduate

of Aurora East High School. She has an associate degree from Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove and a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in athletic training from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Before leaving NIU, Brackett served as an intern athletic training student at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, working with men’s athletics. She continued her education at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, completing a master’s degree in athletic training. Brackett is an active member of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association and the Illinois Athletic Training Association. She resides in Kankakee with her boyfriend, Michael, and their son, Michael Jr.

BEHIND THE SCENES

MICHAEL CORCORAN, M.D. received his degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. His internship was served at But-terworth Hospital through Michigan State University followed by an orthopedic residency at the University of Missouri, Columbia Hospitals.

Corcoran then completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Ala. He is a member of the American Medical Association, Illinois State Medical Society, Illinois Association of Ortho-pedic Society for Sports Medicine and the American College of Sports Medicine. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

Corcoran currently serves as the director of OAK sports medicine. He is also team physician for Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais and several area high schools.

CAREY ELLIS, M.D. received his bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University in San Diego, and his medical degree from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Ellis them completed a residency in family medicine at Kaiser Permanente in Woodland Hills, Calif. After four years of private practice in Los Angeles, he completed a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine/Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center in Tulsa.

Ellis specializes in sports medicine, orthopedic medicine and sports injuries. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Practice and also holds a certificate of added qualifications (CAQ) in sports medicine. Ellis is a member of the American Academy of Family Practice and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. Ellis serves as director of sports medicine for Olivet Nazarene University and KCC and also serves as team physician for Bishop McNamara Catholic and Bloom Township high schools.

A native of the Peoria area, DON-NIE DENSON has worked at KCC for the past 23 years, and is proud to call Kankakee home.

Being employed by the college has brought about many positive experiences over the years for Den-son. This is the 23rd season he has been associated with the women’s basketball team in some capacity. He was an assistant coach of the Lady Cavaliers from 1997 until being named head coach for the 2000-01 season.

Over the last 16 seasons with Denson at the helm, the Lady Cavaliers have compiled a 380-118re-cord, and a winning percentage of .763. He has continued to build upon the program’s history of success, and the Cavaliers have now won the Region IV championship 19 times in the last 25 years.

Denson came to KCC as a Fitness Center specialist and athletic trainer in 1992, and is currently the coordinator of athletic facilities for the Athletic Department.

Denson graduated from Farmington East High School in Farming-ton, and earned a bachelor’s degree from Eureka College. He current-ly resides in Kankakee with his wife, Deb, and their son, David.

HEAD COACH DONNIE DENSON

WALT SHIPMAN, in his sixth sea-son for the Cavaliers, came to us after serving four years as the assistant women’s basketball coach at South Suburban College. Previously, he served as the head sophomore and assistant varsity girls basketball coach at Rich Central High School and then at Marian Catholic High School.

In addition to coaching high school and college, he organized and served as the first president of the Babe Ruth League in the Quad Cities; managed baseball for 20 years, first in the

Quad Cities and then in Homewood; served two terms as president of the Homewood-Flossmoor High School Booster Club and currently is sponsor of the Homewood Small Fry Basketball program, after coaching there 15 years.

Walt is assistant executive director on the International Small Fry Board of Directors and is a member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association and the NCAA Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. Walt and his wife, Ruth, reside in Orland Park.

ASSISTANT COACH WALT SHIPMAN

CASEY HADLEY MEISTER, a former KCC player, is in her second season as women’s basketball assistant coach.

Meister has personal experience as a community college, NCAA Division I, and NAIA Division I athlete. With her playing and coaching experience, she can provide guidance to the student-athletes on reaching the next level, plus valuable input and game planning for the staff.

Meister has six years coaching experi-ence at Tri-Point High School, 2008-11 as an assistant and 2011-14 as head coach.

As assistant for her father, Marcus Hadley, Tri-Point went from a few wins per season to a .500 record. Then, while she was head coach, Tri-Point became even more competitive and finished second in the River Valley Conference all three seasons. Three players from Tri-Point also attended KCC on basketball scholarships during this time.

Meister graduated from Reed-Custer High School in 2004 with multiple basketball honors including All-State two times. She still holds the scoring record for the Kankakee All-Area All-Star game (34 points).

She played for Coach Denson and the Lady Cavaliers from 2004-06. At KCC, Meister was named to the All-Region team (2005) and was MVP of the Region Tournament in 2006. She earned NJCAA All-American honors in 2005 and 2006. She also played in the national tournament in 2006.

Meister continued her basketball career with a scholarship to Chica-go State University. She then played her senior year at Olivet Nazarene University. That team won the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, was nationally ranked, and went to the CCAC National Tour-nament (2008).

Meister is an art teacher at Tri-Point High School and lives in Cullom with her husband, Todd, and their two beautiful twin girls, Hadley and Harper.

Retired principal of St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Bourbonnais, is in his eighth year as the voice of the Cavaliers. He is the an-nouncer for volleyball, basketball and baseball games. Cordes’ son Jon played baseball for the Cav-aliers in 1995, and his daughter, Emily, played volleyball for the Cavs in 2007-08.
