Owen Handy enters his
fourth season at the helm of the
Ravens men's basketball pro-
gram.
During his first three years,
the Ravens have undertaken
some significant changes to the
culture of the program. Coach
Handy describes his ideal play-
er: “We want players who are
mentally tough, committed, and
very competitive. They must be
academically motivated, and
excited about our unique Christian atmosphere. This is
not the right place for everybody – but for the right play-
er this is a very special place.”
The 2014-15 campaign represented one of the largest
single-season improvements in the nation, as the Ravens
13 wins showed a seven-game jump over the prior year.
In three years, the team’s freewheeling motion
offense has produced the school’s single-season scoring
average record-holder (Phil Hogan, 25.5), single-game
scoring record (Phil Hogan, 55), and three of the top
eight leaders in career three-pointers made (Nathaniel
Acree, Phil Hogan, Max Mollaun). A “shoot first, ask
questions later” philosophy has led to school records in
three-pointers in a game (18) and in a season (237). An
emphasis on academic success has produced a two-time
member of the NABC Academic Honors Court (Nate
Gross), and resulted in an increase in the team’s GPA of
more than a full point.
Handy came to Anderson from Wheaton College,
where he served as an assistant coach for the Thunder for
nine seasons under Mike Schauer and Bill Harris. During
his tenure at Wheaton, the Thunder had a 72 percent win-
ning percentage (177-69), five NCAA tournament appear-
ances, and three Sweet 16 appearances. He was a part of
recruiting or coaching five All-Americans, five Academic
All-Americans, six Josten’s Trophy finalists, and one
national player of the year.
Handy has worked numerous basketball camps and
clinics around the world, including L’Arcada, a basketball
camp in Cataluña, Spain. Among the highlights of his
career include, having the opportunity to be involved with
G.O. Ministries in the Dominican Republic, working
alongside former player and current missionary Kyle
Bradley.
The Holland, Michigan native played varsity basket-
ball as a prep at Holland High School for coach Mark
Werley, graduating from the school in 1999. He double-
majored at Wheaton in Political Science and History and
holds a Master’s Degree in Teaching from Aurora
University. He is an active member of Redeemer
Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis.

become the Ravens’ full-time athletic
director.

include the 2002 season when the team
went 21-7, won the HCAC tournament
and competed in the NCAA DIII
Regionals. She was named 2002 HCAC
Coach of the Year. The 2008 team won
the regular season title and she was
again named the league’s top coach.

Coach Tom Beach will be in his third
year on the Anderson University Men's
Basketball coaching staff in 2015-16, follow-
ing a highly successful career as a high
school head coach.
As a highly accomplished and widely
respected high school coach, Beach presided
over one of the most successful stretches of
basketball in the history of Indiana High
School hoops. From 2002-2007, as the head
coach at Forest Park, his teams compiled a
record of 113-17 with two state champi-
onships and three semi-state titles. During his
14 seasons as a head coach at Forest Park and
Shelbyville High Schools, his teams nabbed
seven conference championships.
Coach Beach is a respected clinician, has
been recognized as “Coach of the Year” by
numerous media outlets, selected to coach the
Indiana All-Star Team, was President of the
Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and
currently serves as an Assistant Director of
the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
He will be involved in numerous aspects
of the Raven program, including on court
coaching, player development, recruiting,
game preparation, and administration of sum-
mer basketball programs.
Since Beach has joined the AU coaching
staff, the Ravens have seen growth both on
and off the court. From 0-10 during his first
10 games of his first season to last season
when the Ravens were battling for first place
in the HCAC during the final week of the
season. The team GPA has improved from 2.2
to 3.25 during his tenure.
“I am thrilled to have Coach Tom Beach
as part of our coaching staff,” commented
head coach Owen Handy. “He has improved
our program in many ways. He has a firm
commitment to our unique Christian mission.
He is well respected as a teacher of the game.
With his broad connections to high school
coaches across the state of Indiana, he will
help us identify and recruit talented basket-
ball players. Most importantly, having
coached championship teams, he has proven
that he knows what it takes to win.”
Coach Beach and his wife Vicki, also a
teacher / coach, reside in Shelbyville and are
the parents of two adult children who also
teach and coach. His daughter is an art
teacher, while his son is a varsity boys bas-
ketball coach.
