2015-16 TOWSON TIGER TENNIS

Doug Neagle has brought a new attitude to the Towson tennis team and its paying dividends on the court.

The Tigers have reached the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Quarterfi nals in all six years under Neagle’s leadership. Towson has posted a winning record for the last three seasons and has won 10 or more matches in all but one of Neagle’s six years of coaching.

The 2014-15 season was an impressive year for Neagle and the Tigers. A very young team with only two upperclassmen, Towson proved tough as the team posted a 12-9 overall record. Four Tigers had 15 or more singles victories with freshman Nicole Shakhnazarova leading the way with 23. Her 23 sin-gles wins was the most among a freshman in program history. Towson also had six of its eight players win 10 or more doubles matches.

For only the second time in program history, a Tiger was selected to the All-CAA team. Shakhnazaro-va earned the honors as she was named second team All-CAA for singles. Shakhnazarova also earned the Tigers’ fi rst CAA Player of the Week recognition, being honored twice with the weekly award, along with an Eastern College Athletic Assocation (ECAC) weekly honor.

The Tigers had six seniors fi nish their careers in 2013-14 as Towson went 11-10 overall. Freshman Sophie Lesage was the sole Tiger to fi nish with at least 15 singles victories, posting a 16-6 record.

Towson posted a 12-10 overall record in 2012-13, winning at least 12 matches for the third consecutive year. Neagle led two players to at least 15 singles victories, including senior Andrea Samlin’s team-high 17.

The 2011-12 season for the Tigers marked the sec-ond consecutive season in which the Tigers won at least 12 matches, posting a 12-13 overall record. Nea-gle led four players to at least 15 singles victories, led by sophomore Nisha Shah’s team-high 20.

During the 2010-11 season, just his second at the helm Neagle coached the team to a 14-8 record. The 14 victories were the most by a Tiger team since they joined the Colonial Athletic Association in 2001-02. In addition, Neagle coached four players to 14 or more victories in singles play. Leading that charge for Neagle and the Tigers was freshman Nisha Shah, who completed her fi rst season with a 21-3 mark and the fi fth best single-season winning percentage (.875) in school history.

Neagle came to the Tigers from UMBC where he served as the Associate Head Coach for the men’s

and women’s programs last year. At UMBC, he assist-ed with all aspects of the coaching plan and helped lead the Retrievers to the semi-fi nals of the America East tournament.

Neagle, a 1997 graduate of Salisbury University, served as the head coach at Pomona College/Pitzer College in California for a year and led the team to a number 12 National Ranking in Division III. He also served as the associate head men’s coach at the Na-val Academy, helping the Mids to the Patriot League championship and the team’s fi rst NCAA appearance.

In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Neagle has served as the head tennis pro at the Sport Fit Bowie Racquet Club and the Suburban Club. He also served as the head coach at the Severn School for several years.

Neagle had a successful playing career while at Salisbury University. He fi nished eighth in the country in singles and 12th in doubles in Division III in 1996. In 1997, Neagle fi nished the year as the fi fth-best singles player and the fourth-best doubles player in Division III. A three time All-American at Salisbury in both singles and doubles, he was inducted into the Salisbury University Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. He also spent time on the French Satellite/Money Tour in the summer of 1997.
