Letterfrom thepublisher

Aregular atop the Los Angeles Business Journal’slist of Wealthiest Angelenos, and a past recipi-ent of the LABJ’s “Business Person of the Year”

(thanks to his significant business successes and phil-anthropic contributions), Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong isno stranger to the pages of our publication.

He knows as well as anyone that innovation, cou-pled with passion and hard work, is the engine for suc-cess in business – not to mention a catalyst for lifeenhancing, or even life-saving activity.

His groundbreaking concepts for curing diabetesled to the first nanotechnology-based breast cancerdrug, Abraxane, which is credited with saving thou-sands of lives. He’s since made time to research per-sonalized drug therapies based on people’s gene sets, one of the hottest trends in research.

Now, for the sixth year, his love of innovation hasprompted him to once again join the Business Journalin handing out Patrick Soon-Shiong InnovationAwards to deserving organizations that may in factremind Soon-Shiong a little bit of his own early stagesas a passionate entrepreneur and innovator.

We created this very special awards program toshowcase Los Angeles as a place of innovation forbusinesses – and innovation in business nearlyalways leads to growth.

Here’s a closer look at the inspiration and name-sake of our innovation award:

Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong a physician, surgeon andscientist, has pioneered novel therapies for both dia-betes and cancer, published over 100 scientificpapers, and has over 95 issued patents on ground-breaking advancements spanning myriad fields.

Dr. Soon-Shiong performed the world’s firstencapsulated human islet transplant, the first engi-neered islet cell transplant and the first pig to manislet cell transplant in diabetic patients. He inventedand developed Abraxane, the nation’s first FDA

approved protein nanoparticle albumin-bounddelivery technology for the treatment of cancer.Abraxane was approved by the FDA for metastaticbreast cancer in 2005, lung cancer in 2012, and pan-creatic cancer in 2013. In 2014 Phase 3 trialsrevealed a 48 percent pathological complete remis-sion in triple negative breast cancer with Abraxanetreatment prior to surgery. Abraxane is nowapproved in many countries across the globe andsales are expected to reach a billion dollars in 2016.

From 1997 to 2010, Dr. Soon-Shiong served asfounder, Chairman and CEO of two global pharma-ceutical companies, American Pharmaceutical Partnersand Abraxis BioScience. Both were acquired for multi-billion dollars in 2008 and 2010. In 2011 he foundedNantWorks, an ecosystem of companies to create atransformative global health information and nextgeneration pharmaceutical development network, forthe secure sharing of genetic and medical information– empowering doctors to treat patients with provenprecision at the first point of care and, ultimately, improving the lives of individuals, everywhere.

Dr. Soon-Shiong serves as Chairman of the ChanSoon-Shiong Family Foundation and Chairman andCEO of the Chan Soon-Shiong Institute of MolecularMedicine, a non-profit medical research organiza-tion. ARGOMATIC is a technology platformthat connects shippers with quali-fied carriers who have unutilizedcapacity on their trucks. The com-pany’s core product solves ineffi-ciencies in the less-than-full-truck-load markets within 150 miles of

Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. The local trucking market is highly fragmented,

with 90% of carriers operating six trucks or less.Cargomatic aggregates supply and makes it availableto shippers via its desktop and mobile applications.

Shippers log onto the Cargomatic website andenter their shipment information. Two hours beforethe shipment is scheduled to be picked up, the ship-ment is displayed on an app and a nearby carriercan accept the job using their smart phone.

By tendering shipments in real time, carriersonly see shipments that are on or near their exist-ing routes and ready for immediate pickup. Thisallows them to maximize the space on their trucks

and reduce the number of vehicles a shipperneeds to have on hand to accommodate peakbusiness cycles.

Every day, tens of thousands of trucks with extracapacity are driving by businesses that have freightthat needs to move in the same direction. Simplyby connecting these parties through software,Cargomatic can reduce truck emissions by improv-ing the ratio of freight moved per vehicle-milestraveled.

Cargomatic’s app was built for the local, less-than-truckload marketplace. But the company’s engineershave developed a drayage product designed to moreefficiently move shipping containers out of the ports.

Cargomatic is working in close partnership withthe West Basin Container Terminal at the Port of LosAngeles, where it first tested Cargomatic Free Flow -a drayage product designed to more efficiently moveshipping containers out of the ports - and is build-ing out its pilot program.

Traditionally, when shipping containers come off a

ship, they are placed into long rows of 250-300 con-tainers stacked six-high. When a trucker arrives topick up a container, crane operators have to dig thatcontainer out of the pile. On average, three contain-ers must be moved for every one container delivered.Since displaced containers must be placed back intothe row after the desired container is removed, craneoperators have to make a total of seven containermoves, on average, for every one container delivered.

Cargomatic’s system aims to change that through“free flow.” If a shipper has a certain minimum num-ber of containers on one ship (typically 30-50 contain-ers), a port operator will agree to place those contain-ers in a separate “free flow” pile. Because all of thecontainers in a free flow pile are headed for one com-pany’s distribution center, it doesn’t matter whichcontainer a trucker receives. This arrangement allowstop-handlers to “peel off” the first container from thestack and place it directly on a truck, resulting in 1container delivered for every 1 container moved, or a700% improvement in operator efficiency.

UGMENTED and virtual realities arehaving “a moment” in the techworld. From the rise and fall ofGoogle Glass to billion dollaracquisitions and valuations, there isno question that the industry isone of the most closely watched

and widely discussed. The augmented reality market is projected to gen-

erate $150 billion in revenue by 2020. Most of thehype has been around consumer-facing experiences, and not much attention has been paid to other appli-cations for both hardware and software. There is ahuge, un-tapped opportunity around using augment-ed reality in the workforce, and it is going to have adrastic impact on the way we work in the future.

DAQRI is an augmented reality company power-ing the future of work through innovative hardwareand software products. Its flagship product, theDAQRI Smart Helmet, uses augmented reality tech-nology to improve safety and efficiency for workerson the job and provides unparalleled cost savings for

Fortune 500 companies in industrial and manufac-turing settings.

DAQRI spent more than a year developing theDAQRI Smart Helmet, a professional-grade head-mounted display for industrial environments. Withthe Smart Helmet, workers are able to seamlesslyconnect to their environments, improving produc-tivity, safety and efficiency. Supported by DAQRI’s4D software, the device is completely hands-free,and allows the wearer to see work instructions in thecontext of the job being done.

With the Smart Helmet, workers in a variety ofindustries including aerospace, oil and gas, manufac-turing, transportation, power and more can now beconnected with the information and environmentaround them. Workers at complex and dangerousjob sites can receive step-by-step instructions on topof real-world objects in their field of vision, or bepinged with instant safety alerts and emergencyinstructions in the field.

Powering the Smart Helmet is “Intellitrack” theworld’s most advanced sensor package. Intellitrack

turns any industrial environment into a canvas for4D content, from in-context training applications toaugmented work instructions and beyond. UsingDAQRI’s Industrial 4D Studio, its 4D-authoring pro-gram, enterprises are able to develop their own work-flows using Intellitrack, as well as gather insights intoSmart Helmet usage behavior. With a slew of techno-logically advanced capabilities, including high-resolu-tion 3D sensors, 360 degree navigating cameras andbattery life that lasts an entire shift, the SmartHelmet’s technological capabilities are unparalleled.

ECOGNIZING the need for an environ-mentally friendly addition to themarine engine industry, CaptainBernardo Herzer has created a newcategory of cleaner, more reliableoutboard engines that eliminate thegrowing concerns with ethanol

problems. With the new and stricter EPA and CARBregulations and lower cost of propane fuel, thesemore reliable outboards are making boating easierand more fun for the end user. This innovation is thefuture and one company visionary made it a reality.

In 2012, LEHR launched the 2.5HP and 5.0HPPropane Powered Outboard Engines with immediateacceptance and accolades from the boating world. The LEHR engines utilize LEHR’s award winninggaseous fuel technology to eliminate the environ-mental detriment of gasoline, extend engine life andreduce the cost of operation.

With the same power and performance andoffered at a comparable price to gasoline outboards, the propane engines are superior in that they virtu-ally eliminate particulate emissions, eliminate gaso-

line pollution in the water, and have zero evapora-tive emissions from the closed fuel system. In addi-tion, there is no danger of contamination of thewater through spillage (propane is not a marine pol-lutant) and they are cost effective to own and main-tain. Propane is a less expensive fuel that does notgo bad with time therefore avoiding fuel-related/car-bureted maintenance and repairs, particularly withtoday’s ethanol added fuels. The engines run onLEHR’s new one-pound refillable propane container,or Coleman disposables or attached to standard BBQpropane tanks or any DOT approved propane tanks.

In short, LEHR technology provides its users withequipment that offers full power and performancewith reduced emissions, reduced fuel cost, reducedmaintenance problems, and lower overall cost ofownership. Unlike gasoline-powered motors, LEHRengines can be safely and quickly refueled withoutozone depleting evaporative emissions, spilling orignition risk.

And that’s not all. Most recently, Captain Herzerand LEHR have continued their innovative successwith the release of the world’s first internal battery

propane powered outboard engine. Herzer helpeddevelop the marine application for LEHR’s new lithi-um iron phosphate chemistry technology and nowoffers this new battery technology on a range of out-boards in different horsepowers, including a 9.9Hpand 15HP. Bringing the environmentally advanta-geous aspects of this clean alternative fuel with arevolutionary starting option to a broader audience, this new internal battery model is an industry first.Traditional electric start outboards require a large, heavy lead acid or AGM type battery to be carried inthe boat along with the associated heavy cables tocarry the electrical current to the engine.

LEHR’s new innovation makes use of the latesttechnology Lithium Iron battery contained insidethe housing of the outboard motor itself, thus elimi-nating the battery and cables inside the boat. Theentire system only adds 2 lbs of weight to the out-board. The benefit to a small boat operator lookingfor portability is obvious. And with an aging activeboating population, bringing an electric start optionto small, portable self-contained engines is a god-send to many.

YPERTENSION affects over one billionpeople on the planet and is one ofthe leading causes of cardiovasculardisease and stroke. Almost 50% ofadult hypertensive patients in theU.S. are uncontrolled; that is, theystill have high blood pressure.

Thus, there is a significant need for a non-drug ther-apy option that lowers blood pressure, is minimallyinvasive for patients, and is cost effective for payers.

In March of 2011, Valencia CEO Jeff Greinerreteamed with CTO Dave Peterson to evaluate ifthey could take the underlying science of elec-troacupunture and mold their Western neuromodu-lation experience with implantable pacemakers(cochlear implants and spinal cord stimulators) tofind a solution that would help improve the lives ofmillions of people not responding to their bloodpressure medications. Their solution is the radicallysmall, coin-sized Subcutaneous NeuromodulationSystem (SNS) that stimulates the median nerve inthe forearm reducing blood pressure in resistanthypertensive patients.

The underlying science was done by Drs. Li andLonghurst from UC Irvine and establishes themechanism of action for acupuncture therapy inthe treatment of hypertension. These physiciansbelieve and their decades of work show thatacupuncture is not mysterious, but neuromodula-tion. Their research indicates that a low duty cyclecan be used for the treatment of chronic conditions, which therefore allows for a once a week, thirtyminute stimulation sessions.

Placed in the forearm during a 20-minute officeprocedure, the coin-sized device stimulates themedian nerve at low frequency and low intensityelectrical pulses that are comfortable to the patient. The location is optimal because the device sits abovethe tendons and the fascia where a pocket is natural-ly formed and just 4 mm away from the target nerve(median nerve). Using local anesthetic, any surgeonor interventionalist can implant the device in a pro-cedure designed by hand surgeon Dr. Subhro Sen ofStanford University. In addition to the device, thecost of the procedure is low given limited time andfacility requirements.

Once implanted, the device works by activatingthe median nerve, sending out a relatively low-pow-ered and well-tolerated electrical stimulus to com-municate with the brain.

Valencia’s invention contains the followingadvantages over present modern technology; it isflat and disk-shaped for retention and stability justunder the skin; it is a leadless system with elec-trodes that are part of the outside housing creatingthe optimum configured electrical field; its unique-ly positioned feed-through offers protection fromthe rigors of the manufacturing process; and theelectronics enable the high impedance watch bat-tery to work.

Unlike most active medical devices on the mar-ket, Valencia’s device was also created with the goalof being low cost to produce and therefore, of lowcost to the healthcare system. CTO and primaryinventor Dave Peterson was able to collaborate withChief of Mechanical/Materials Engineering ChulaThenuwara in order to produce the device for hun-dreds of dollars instead of the thousands of dollarslarger pacemakers require.

-THERMA is developing a radical newhighway of non-toxic, hyper-effec-tive antifreeze agents to fightunwanted ice formation in regener-ative medicine, advanced formula-tion cosmetics, enhanced qualityfrozen food, and industrial deicing

applications using nature-inspired, biomimeticnanoscience.

Cryoprotective agents (CPAs) are critical additivesto control unwanted ice growth in the biomedicalarena and a wide array of industries (e.g. frozen food,airplane/gas pipeline deicing and engine coolants.) Amajor chemical breakthrough is demanded becauseof the limitations of the classic CPAs that have notbeen greatly improved in the last 50 years, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and ethylene/propylene glycol, and their adverse toxicity. Nature provides a greatsolution for arctic species to survive an ice world byproducing natural antifreeze proteins (AFPs). Theseproteins are among the most wanted proteinsbecause of their superior antifreeze performance

compared to DMSO. However, extremely limitedresources and difficult purification hinders the com-mercialization of AFPs leading to unreliable world-wide production. AFPs also exhibit a short shelf lifeand may cause immune reactions in humans.

X-Therma has a unique solution. Biomimeticnanoscience provides advanced ice-interacting pep-tidomimetics similar to AFPs, but superior (costeffective, long lasting, non-immunogenic) to offerthe first affordable, safe and highly effective CPAsmatching AFPs. Series IPs are in formation to protectmultiple technologies in material development anda high-throughput instrument, which is a field first.

X-Therma aims to first “reshape” and “expand”rather than “disrupt” the marketplace by offeringthis new generation of antifreeze additives to drasti-cally improve the performance of current productsin the market. X-Therma has a horizontal integra-tion market strategy, which focuses on maximizingthe return and minimizing the risk for its investors.

The global market for Organ/TissueTransplantation is estimated to be $20 Billion. In the

U.S, only 1 in 5 patients can receive a new organ. InJanuary 2015, major government funding agencies(DoD, NASA, NIH, and NSF) fully realized the ulti-mate solution is an organ/tissue bank and launcheda national movement to fund cutting-edge technolo-gies to enable this vision. X-Therma’s unique devel-opment of new CPAs for safe and effective biobank-ing was awarded a DoD SBIR Phase I grant in 2015.

There are other potential markets and industriesthat can benefit from this technology as well, including the ice cream industry. U.S. annual salesof ice cream exceed $10 billion in revenue. The keyto “creamy good” ice cream is small, controlled icecrystal size. An addition of 4 mg/L of AFPs can pre-vent the formation of large ice crystals that spoil thesmooth, silky texture of premium ice cream, whichusually has 17% fat content. A small quantity of ourmaterial will allow premium ice cream to become“low fat/low carb” and increase attractiveness tohealth conscious consumers. Most importantly, byenhancing the stability of the ice cream, it could cutthe cold chain costs to 10%.

A TLANTIS Technologies has commercialized anadvanced form of capacitive deionization calledRDI, or Radial Deionization. The RDI can economi-

cally desalinate complex industrial wastewater such asoil/gas produced water, power plant (FGD scrubber blow-down, cooling tower blow-down), mining, and impairedgroundwater.

The system is based on the patented RDI super-capaci-tor cylinder. Cylinders can be placed in series to reducehigh salinity water and in parallel to treat municipal scaleflow-rates. Atlantis’ RDI system can process water withsalinity up to 150,000 ppm, high levels of hardness, heavy metals (Hg, Se, U, Ba, Sr), and other low solubilityspecies such as calcium sulfate. High flow rates, highclean water recovery, and low maintenance allow for thecost of ownership to be as much as 70% less than existingstate of the art technologies.

The base capability of the RDI system along with thepotential for improvements 30-60 times current metrics inenergy and weight is a significant breakthrough for capac-itive deionization and will allow it to meet and exceedthe performance metrics of state of the art reverse osmo-sis, electro dialysis, and thermal systems.

Atlantis has deployed multiple field pilots in the oil &gas market, including a trailer mounted system and remotecontrolled system in the Middle East. The company hasalso operated long-term studies in-house on producedwater. A 4th generation system is currently being intro-duced. This system has six times flux rate, which reducesthe size of the super capacitor needed by a factor of six, reducing the number one cost component of the system.

EVERY short-run folding carton job faces the problem of qual-ity traded-off for cost-effective printing solutions. With thecost structure in the packaging and printing industry inher-

ently designed to favor large quantity orders; the larger theorder, the lower the price per piece. Therefore, companies thatgenerally need small quantity orders are forever disadvantagedto pay higher prices.

The world has since witnessed considerable improvements inprinting presses, numerous new printing solutions and a pletho-ra of acclaimed innovations. Despite the visible improvementsin quality due to more sophisticated machines, only few compa-nies can claim to be concurrently cost-effective and quality-con-scious. Most companies charge additional fees based on thenumber of colors printed, and most can’t sufficiently and consis-tently match Pantone colors. Hence, there has been a need for acost-effective and high quality short-run solution that can effec-tively match Pantone colors.

Thoro Packaging therefore established FoldedColor, a web-to-folding-carton solution based on its groundbreaking innovationof digital-litho technology with seven-color process. This inno-vation is cost-effective without conceding quality. It is able toconstantly match 83% of Pantone colors with color stability andconsistency on all printed cartons. On top of all this, it doesn’tcost more to print 1000+ colors on a carton than to print fourcolors. This is the first-of-its-kind.

No other technology in the world can boast of stable offsetprinted folding cartons while matching 83% of Pantone colors, high quality, one price no matter how many printed colors, online 3D proofing, immediate pricing, and fast turnaroundtime, all at once. FoldedColor saves up to 60% of the averageindustry pricings because of all these efficiencies.

ics and other agents that require large doses to be deliv-ered directly to the lungs. It is the delivery of these life-saving treatments by aerosol inhalation that present criti-cal needs that are not well served by current technologies.

Dr. Donovan Yeates of KAER BiotherapeuticsCorporation took a new and untried approach. He decid-ed to generate a large liquid aerosol containing the drug, rapidly evaporate this aerosol to a dry powder and thenremove the majority of the air from the aerosol using vir-tual impaction such that a concentrated respirable aerosolwas delivered at the output. The Heart Lung and BloodInstitute of NIH through Phase I and 11 SBIR grants sup-ported this novel approach dubbed SUPRAER.

Respirable aerosols of proteins, antibodies, surfactantand other large and small molecules have been successful-ly aerosolized with SUPRAER at rates up to 200mg/minute. Molecular or biological functional degrada-tion have not been observed. A solid particle of proteingenerated by SUPRAER contains 25 times the mass of drugof an equivalent sized 4% solution of an aqueous aerosol.SUPRAER uses a single-pass low-shear nozzle. The finalparticle size and delivery rate are tailored to the need athand. Output efficiencies of 65% are attainable.

The system is scalable and can easily be manufacturedas an in-hospital device or as an aerosol generation sys-tem for home use. The universality of this system enablesit to deliver all drugs in solution or suspension.

ONE in five globally suffer from skin disease, such asinfections, rashes, ulcers, moles, and cancers, andsurveys consistently show that skin disease is the

number one reason patients seek health care. Out of900,000 physicians in the US, however, only 9,600 aredermatologists. Consequently, physicians of all specialtiesare continuously confronted with the question: “what isthis mole (spot, freckle) on my skin?”

To answer this question, physicians face one of themost glaring deficiencies in modern medicine: there hasbeen no diagnostic test for skin. Lubax has now devel-oped such a test.

Lubax is a mobile app that identifies skin diseasesinstantaneously. Lubax uses a proprietary database ofdiagnosed skin-lesion images (currently 12,000 images)and a patented computer vision algorithm based on theprinciples of content-based image retrieval.

The doctor takes a photo of a skin lesion, and Lubaxreturns best-matching images and their diagnoses from aproprietary database of diagnosed lesions. No additionallenses or lighting is required, only a smart phone is need-ed. The software is potentially capable of identifying allskin lesions: if Lubax has relevant images in the database,it can identify the skin lesion. A first trial with Stanfordand Oxford showed greater than 90% sensitivity andspecificity in identifying melanomas (larger than 10mm),which is even more accurate than most dermatologists.Ultimately, Lubax will not just help doctors decide if theirpatients need to see a dermatologist, but in fact outper-form dermatologists in skin check accuracy.

NEURAL Analytics has built a working prototype of theworld’s first objective concussion diagnosis andReturn-to-Play (RTP) management device. Our

approach combines existing medical technology with cutting-edge robotics and data science.

Concussion, also known as a mild traumatic brain injury(mild TBI), impacts between 1.6 and 3.8 million people eachyear with higher rates in our military and athletic populations.

Neural Analytics’ technology utilizes non-invasive ultrasoundto assess the physiological response of patient blood flow to pro-vide an objective measure of concussion. It has been well docu-mented in academic literature that there is a strong correlationbetween impaired cerebral blood flow and mild or severe TBI.Neural Analytics developed several proprietary ways to measurethe critical components of cerebral blood flow using “off theshelf” technologies. Measuring cerebral hemodynamics objectivelyusing an accurate, portable device for mild TBI diagnosis and RTPdecisions is an innovative approach to address these challenges.

No other technology is capable of obtaining direct real-timeinformation about the physiological processes of cerebral bloodflow. Neural Analytics’ platform provides a portable, cost-effec-tive, and safe solution allowing for the mass adoption of ourtechnology. Recently, research and development by NeuralAnalytics has led to support from federal grant agencies, NASA,the US military, and professional sports organizations.

This innovative technology combines existing medicalhardware with advanced robotics and data science to address asignificant market opportunity. By providing a safe, non-inva-sive and cost-effective method to obtain objective and action-able information about the brain, Neural Analytics will help tosave lives and enable better patient care.

IN the past two decades, research has failed to produce a newdrug to treat Alzheimer’s disease because 1) antibodies to clearamyloid plaques and/or tau tangles from the brain were admin-

istered to patients with significant cognitive impairment/dementia— too late to reverse the brain damage; 2) gamma or beta enzymeinhibitors were administered to decrease the formation of amy-loid42 (primary cause), but these drugs have many side effects dueto other effects of the enzymes, and again it is too late for patientswith dementia. Recent evidence with two amyloid antibodies sug-gests that if administered to pre-cognitive impaired people withminimum amyloid deposits, the cognitive impairment/dementiacan be prevented along with further amyloid damage.

NeuroGenetic Pharmaceuticals’ discovery program began in2003 with the goal of selectively preventing the formation ofAb42 (the bad amyloid) without inhibiting important multifunc-tional enzymes. After screening 100,000 compounds to find oneof interest, then synthesizing more than 2000 molecules to opti-mize the mechanism and drug-like properties, the companyfound about ten with excellent potency, selectivity for modulat-ing the cleavage enzymes, orally absorbed and brain selectivity. In 2009, the company chose three compounds for toxicology anddrug disposition studies, then selected NGP 555 for further devel-opment. It has now been shown that NGP 555 selectively andsafely modulates rather than inhibits the key enzymes, is well dis-tributed in the brain, is a stable molecule which has been formu-lated into a capsule for oral dosing.

This innovation has required major persistence, and results con-tinue to be quite encouraging.

OMNI Nano is an organization dedicated to teachingkids about cutting edge science, specifically nanotech-nology. The company envisions American students

educated and passionate about nanotechnology, and inspiredto pursue future STEM careers for the greater good of ourcommunities and our nation.

Omni Nano is on a mission to inspire our students tobecome the future scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs ofnanotechnology, who will ultimately make significant contri-butions to the continued success and prosperity of theUnited States. The company is determined to motivate thenext generation of America’s STEM workforce by developing, producing, and distributing educational material for nan-otechnology courses.

While facing one of the most important decisions of theirlives – choosing their college major – today’s high school jun-iors and seniors typically know very little about the scienceand engineering of the 21st century. In fact, despite its grow-ing importance, nanotechnology is currently predominantlytaught in master and doctorate degree programs. Omni Nanobelieves that if junior and senior high school students (11th

and 12th grade), can be engaged and excited about the tech-nologies of the 21st Century, then they can be guidedtowards STEM majors in college, and potentially on a trajecto-ry of productive professional careers in science and engineer-ing, leading to a significant positive impact on their lives.

Omni Nano aims to disseminate nanotechnology educa-tion through three distinct projects, which are designed tofacilitate the teaching of nanotechnology classes. Although ayoung organization, Omni Nano has already achieved impor-tant milestones on all of its projects.
