OUR MISSION & CORE VALUES Our Mission. The focus of the Commission for Student Involvement is students in colleges and universities and their environments. Efforts of the Commission are directed toward a deeper understanding of the students, their characteristics, purposes, attitudes, behavior, mores, campus activities, and community life as a basis for more effective planning of relevant programs for students. A major emphasis of the Commission’s work is on the integration of out of class activities of students on the campus and in the larger community with the formal academic curriculum. The college student’s total educational experience is seen as a potent force for student development. The Commission fulfills its function not only through convention programming, but also through research and ongoing task force efforts aimed at advancing and advocating the development of more visible student organizations and activities programs. Within the Association, the Commission provides an avenue for involvement of anyone working with and/or interested in student activities at post-secondary institutions. Our Core Values. As a Commission for Student Involvement, we hold the following core values as central to our work:

Education and development of the total student

Diversity, multicultural competence, and human dignity

Inclusiveness in and access to association-wide involvement and decision-making

Free and open exchange of ideas in a context of mutual respect

Advancement and dissemination of knowledge relevant to college students and their learning, and the effectiveness of student affairs professionals and their institutions

Continuous professional development and personal growth of student affairs professionals

Outreach and advocacy on issues of concern to students, student affairs professionals, and the higher education community, including affirmative action and other policy issues

OVERARCHING GOALS & STRATEGIC INITIATIVES Overarching Goals. As a Commission for Student Involvement, we have identified four overarching goals that all members of the Commission – including our Leadership Team – work day-to-day to fulfill:

1. Active Learning 2. Education

3. Research 4. Advocacy

Strategic Initiatives. In addition to our Overarching Goals, four key themes emerged from our 2012-2013 CSI Task Force findings, which currently guide the strategic direction and initiatives of the Commission:

1. Increase Access 2. Diversify Offerings

3. Connect to the World Around Us 4. Empower Membership

INCREASE ACCESS calls for us as a Commission to increase and enhance our use of technology, as well as local/regional opportunities, in order to transcend place- and time-bound CSI professional development, taking opportunities to connect to and engage with members directly on a year-round basis. DIVERSIFY OFFERINGS calls for the examination, refinement, and expansion of pedagogies for professional development and topics included in CSI professional development. A strong emphasis should be placed on the intersectional nature of disciplines and functional areas within student involvement. CONNECT TO THE WORLD AROUND US calls for the immediate investment in collaborative partnerships. Emphasis should be placed on working more synchronously across functional areas within the CSI, collaborating with fellow commissions and standing committees within ACPA, and developing meaningful partnerships with external associations. EMPOWER MEMBERSHIP calls for expanded opportunities for non-positional leadership roles within the Commission and enhanced communication between membership and the CSI Leadership Team and Directorate Body.

Why Serve on the Leadership Team It is an exciting time within the Commission, which has served as a home for student affairs practitioners and scholars of student involvement for over 50 years. In 2011, to mark our 50th Anniversary as a Commission, we launched a CSI Task Force to assess the needs of our membership and review how successfully the CSI has met those needs. From the findings released in 2012, four themes emerged that have guided our 2014-2015 CSI Leadership Team this year: 1) Increase Access, 2) Diversify Offerings, 3) Connect to Others, and 4) Empower Membership. Serving on the CSI Leadership Team is a wonderful way for current members to lead initiatives that were developed in response to these themes in 2013-2014. It is also a great opportunity for current members to amplify their involvement in the Commission by serving in a leadership role. Though leadership positions differ, each supports initiatives of the Commission through day-to-day programming and/or operational roles. And, each position gives the opportunity to interact with committee volunteers from a variety of institutions across the country and world. In sum, serving in an elected position for the Commission is a wonderful opportunity to develop professionally, while working toward the CSI’s mission to support colleagues in the area of Student Involvement. “My time spent serving the Commission has undoubtedly been the most formative period in my professional career. Through various leadership roles, I have been challenged to develop my professional competencies, and throughout my experience I have been supported by incredible new colleagues and friends. We in student affairs often say that our students’ involvement in out-of-class experiences bring their in-class experiences to life. Just the same, I can truly say that my involvement in the Commission has brought my work experiences to life. In fact, I recently shared with our Chair that I have gained as much or more from this volunteer experience than from any paid experience to date.” ~ Sarah Hermsmeier, Chair for the Commission "Being a part of the CSI Leadership Team has provided me the opportunity to work with and learn from absolutely

extraordinary professionals from around the country who are equally dedicated to advancing this field. Without a

doubt, my service with the Commission has been of transformative for me, helping me to advance critical skill sets like

supervision, assessment, strategic planning, program development, and financial stewardship."

~ Mark Anthony Torrez, Vice Chair for the Commission

“Serving as the Vice-Chair for Programs in CSI this year has been an incredibly rewarding experience. It has been such

a rich experience to know you are making your mark on student involvement through the CSI in a leadership position

such as this and I have found so many ways it has helped me in the day-to-day work I do with my students as well. I

highly recommend the opportunity to get more involved in ACPA through the CSI Leadership Team to anyone and

everyone looking to find their fit!” ~ Emily Holmes, Vice Chair for Programs

What is the Commission for Student Involvement Leadership Team? The CSI Leadership Team is one of two leadership bodies within the Commission. The second, the Directorate Governing Board, is the advisory body of the Commission and provides the long-term vision for the commission and works to ensure the Commission leadership is meeting the goals and vision of the Commission. You can think of the Directorate body as the “board of trustees” for the Commission, similar to the board of trustees (or regents, or directors) at your institution. While the Directorate Governing Board provides long-term visioning for the Commission, the Leadership Team is responsible for carrying out the day-to-day work of the Commission. Do I need to be involved with ACPA or the Commission for Student Involvement to run for an elected position on the Leadership Team? Yes! To be eligible to run for an elected position on the CSI Leadership Team, individuals must be listed as a current member of both ACPA and the Commission for Student Involvement. It is strongly encouraged that applicants check their membership status in both ACPA and the Commission – you must be listed as a member of both ACPA and the CSI at the time of application through the elections process. There is no additional fee to join the CSI if you are registered as a member of ACPA. Just update your information with ACPA to include the CSI as one of your member groups. To join the CSI, log in to your “Member Profile” at www.myacpa.org and click on “My Involvement,” then “Get More Involved.” Do I need to know a lot about ACPA or the Commission for Student Involvement to run for a position on the Leadership Team? No! It is encouraged but not required that candidates for positions on the CSI Leadership Team have prior experience with the Commission. Previous involvement might include presenting a sponsored program, volunteering on a committee, serving as a reviewer, or submitting a publication. However, candidates need not know all the ins and outs of ACPA or even the Commission for Student Involvement. We simply seek dedicated student affairs professionals who are committed to advancing the theory and practice within one or more of our functional areas (Community Service & Service-Learning, Fraternity & Sorority Affairs, Leadership Education, and Organizations & Activities). What are the qualifications to run for a position on the CSI Leadership Team? Other qualifications to run for a position on the CSI Leadership Team are as follows:

Individuals serving as members of the CSI Leadership Team will be current members of ACPA.

Only Commission members are eligible to be elected to a position on the CSI Leadership Team.

Individuals commit to their elected position for one full year (June-June), and must attend two Annual Conventions, as well as the Leadership Advance prior to starting their term.

What is the time commitment to serve on the CSI Leadership Team? Manageable! The term of office for positions on the CSI Leadership Team is one full year, beginning and ending in June. Most members of the CSI Leadership Team commit 2-4 hours per week to fulfilling the roles and responsibilities of their position, on average. Members of the CSI Leadership Team are expected to serve for one full year (June-June), to attend two Annual conventions during their term, and to participate in the Leadership Advance prior to starting their term. Beyond their specific roles and responsibilities, members of the CSI Leadership Team are expected to actively engage in the work of the Commission, serving on committees, task forces, etc. as necessary and appropriate. Why should I want to get involved in the CSI Leadership Team (what’s in it for me)? As mentioned, it is an exciting time within the Commission, and an exciting time to serve on the CSI Leadership Team! Serving in an elected position for the Commission is a wonderful opportunity to develop professionally, while working toward the CSI’s mission to support colleagues in the area of Student Involvement. It also offers opportunities to network with colleagues across the country and throughout the Association. I am a current graduate student – can I run for a position on the CSI Leadership Team? Yes! Current graduate students, new professionals, seasoned professionals, faculty members, and others interested in the work of the Commission can run for and serve in a position on the CSI Leadership Team. In fact, the work of the Commission is enriched by having multiple perspectives around the table, so we welcome a diverse group of nominees and applicants for our leadership positions.
