GLOSSARY

EU Member States (28)

Whenever Europe is mentioned in the framework of the Erasmus+ programme, the following programme countries (28+6) are included:

A cooperation agreement with a partner institution is a signed agreement between two universities, or between a KU Leuven faculty and a university or faculty in another country. Faculties sign agreements with partner institutions abroad so they can exchange students. Both institutions involved confirm to agree on the main principles of the student exchange: the home university will recognize the courses taken abroad and the study results obtained by the student during his stay at the partner university.

Students contact the faculty to find out which mobility is possible and which faculty deadlines are to be observed.

Please note that some of the web pages to which the links refer only have limited information in English, while others have no information in English at all.

Exchange students are students who, while studying at KU Leuven, as part of their KU Leuven study programme travel abroad to a partner institution for the purpose of study or thesis research or to do an internship. KU Leuven recognizes the courses taken abroad and the study results obtained at the host instituiton as part of the students’ study programme at KU Leuven.

Mobility in pairs of students (mobility as part of a duo project): the mobility takes place in both directions, so one student travels from KU Leuven to an institution abroad while another student travels from a university abroad to KU Leuven. The exchanges need not take place at the same time or in the same field of study.

Like exchange students, outgoing students (‘uitzendstudenten’ in Dutch) , while studying at KU Leuven, travel for a limited period of time and for educational purposes to a partner institution abroad. Unlike exchange students however, the study period of outgoing tudents at the host university is not considered part of their study programme at KU Leuven. During their stay abroad, outgoing students keep their status of KU Leuven student up to a certain degree. Travelling abroad as an outgoing student is only possible in the framework of a few specific mobility programmes.

Students from underrepresented groups are students with a low socio-economic background who receive a study allowance from the Flemish Government, disabled students recognized by VAPH (Flemish Agency for Disabled Persons), and working students.

The 54 VLIR-UOS countries- are:

in Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea (Conakry), Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Kenia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa

in Asia: Bangladesh, Cambodia, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Laos, Nepal, the Palestinian Territories, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam

in Latin America: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay

The KU Leuven Central Selection Committee selects students at the institutional level for exchanges that take place in the framework of the university’s Central Bilateral Agreements and a number of scholarship programmes. The Selection Committee takes into consideration the (pre)selections and rankings provided by the KU Leuven faculties, as well as the advice formulated by the faculties.

Amongst the selection criteria for the selection of students in the framework of mobility programmes are study results and/or study progress, motivation, language skills and the relevance of the exchange for the student’s studies at KU Leuven. Should application files equal one another on qualitative grounds, priority will be given to students from underrepresented groups (students reveiving a study allowance, disabled students and working students). Scholarship programmes are free to emphasize certain criteria or formulate additional criteria if they wish to do so.
