Orchestra Notes from Mr. Hire As we approach our first performance of the year, I have a few reminders and topics of conversation listed below. I am

looking forward to our first concert of the school year.

Concert Uniform Reminders: As the concert season begins and becomes very active, students and parents are reminded to review the uniform

dress policy found in the orchestra handbook. Students who are not compliant will not be permitted to perform.

Please note the following:

Ladies will not be permitted to wear jackets, hoodies, or sweatshirts over their dresses while they wait for

performances because they are cold. Instead, they may wear a long-sleeved, black cardigan or sweater (without

logos).

Ladies are not permitted to wear blue jeans or long pants under their dresses.

Ladies must wear closed-toed, black dress shoes (flats are fine) for concerts.

All dresses must be hemmed!

Potluck Dinner Concert: Once again all four of our fantastic orchestras will kick-off our 2015-2016 season at the annual Potluck Dinner

and Fall Concert on Tuesday, October 13 at 5:30 pm. This fun concert brings together all of our orchestra families for an

evening of fantastic food, socializing and great music. All families will be asked to bring their favorite dish to share.

Specific information can be found in this newsletter.

The SIMB Social Committee will need many parent volunteers to help organize, set-up, and tear-down this

unique event. Information will be distributed to all students during class including a form for volunteering.

Upcoming Events:

Orchestra Pot Luck Dinner Concert, Tuesday, October 13, 5:30 pm, SHS Cafeteria and Main Gym.

Holiday Choir Concert, Tuesday, December 8, 7:00 pm, SHS Main Gym, Symphony Orchestra will perform on

this Concert.

Holiday Orchestra Concert, Monday, December 9, 7:00 pm, SHS Main Gym. Featuring all orchestras.

Instrument Maintenance reminders: It is very important that students keep their instruments in good operating order to ensure playability and a great

tonal production. String players should have their bow re-haired once a year. A sign that a bow needs to be re-haired

includes thinning hair, dirty hair, or a bow that will not tighten/loosen. Such problems will prohibit the student from

generating a good tone quality. A typical bow re-hair will cost between $40-$60.

Additionally, strings should be replaced regularly to avoid breakage at those critical, moments (concerts, contest,

etc.). With the amount of playing our typical high school orchestras, strings should be replaced once a year. Furthermore,

high school string players should not replace their strings with steel strings; instead, use strings with synthetic cores such

as Dominant, or D’Addario brands. I have a list of recommended string technicians who specialize in stringed instrument

repair on the orchestra board. Additionally, I have links to recommended vendors who specialize in string instruments on

the orchestra website.

Solo and Ensemble Contest: It is not too early to start thinking about Solo and Ensemble Contest! Though it is a requirement for all

Symphony students, I highly recommend that musicians in all groups participate in this fantastic educational opportunity.

Early planning is necessary to insure adequate preparation and organization. All students will be required to return a

completed application and fees. Students may view requirements at www.gcsae.org. This years Solo and Ensemble

Contest will be January 23, 2016 at Fairview Park HS. More information, including the application deadline, is

forthcoming.

If you need to reach me or want to hear important orchestra information, call the orchestra phone at 572-7105,

and/or email me [email protected], Other important information can be found on the SHS Music Department website

or the SHS Orchestra website through strongnet.org.

MARCHING BAND NOTES Dear Parents, In this newsletter I wanted to recognize the band students for all of their hard work. As we closed the Billy Joel Show this week in Medina, I was so proud of how far we have come. I am very excited in their accomplishments, which range from good marching technique, memorizing difficult music, to the flags moving in and out of the drill while doing their routines. I am also happy with all of the participation in the stands as we support the team and I really like our newer tradition of playing the Alma Mater with the team and cheerleaders after the game. The performance at the North Royalton Band Show was a huge success and again the students rose to the occasion to represent our school and community in such a positive way through the art of marching band. We are looking forward to middle school night this Friday and our new show is close on the horizon. I invite you to get involved with the boosters as a volunteer, whether it is as a chaperone or a concession worker. You will be glad you did! The season is going by fast, but it is not too late to get involved. Thanks to all of the parent volunteers who have helped so far this season. Go Mustangs! Mr. Brian King Marching Band Director

STUDENTS - DO NOT LOSE EASY POINTS : All marching students are required to wear white socks, which cover the ankles, their white band t-shirt, and white gloves for all performances, and properly hang their uniform in their garment bag. The Uniform Committee is required to notify the Director of any uniform violations, which will result in point deductions for 1st quarter grades. REMINDER: As the weather gets colder, students may wear long sleeved collarless shirts under their band t-shirt as well as leggings, sweatpants, or Under Armour type pants under their uniform pants for warmth. Absolutely, NO JEANS. GOT MARCHING BAND/FLAG QUESTIONS? Check out our answers to Frequently Asked Questions regarding Uniforms, the Friday Night Routine, Cleaning, etc., in this newsletter OR via the high school website. Click “Music Dept.”, click “Welcome”, click “SIMB”. Contact Sandy Treudler at [email protected] with any additional questions.

MARCHING BAND UNIFORM NEWS YOU CAN USE!

CALLING ALL ORCHESTRA AND BAND PARENTS AND STUDENTS…WE NEED YOU! Please consider signing up to help us out with concessions! Up until this point, the same 10 to 20 people have been helping each week. They are missing the chance to see their child perform and they are getting burned out. That stinks when we have about 300 band and orchestra students. Please take a moment to check your calendar. We would

appreciate it if ORCHESTRA PARENTS would sign up for Friday night concession stands so marching band parents can watch their children’s performance at halftime, and MARCHING BAND PARENTS can then help at Thursday & Saturday games. Remember, many hands make light work! If each parent/student signed up to work at only one or two games a year, we would never need to ask for volunteers. For more information please contact Sharon Alley at [email protected].

DID YOU KNOW…THE FUNDS EARNED FROM OUR CONCESSION STANDS BENEFIT BOTH ORCHESTRA AND MARCHING BAND STUDENTS. They are used to purchase new instruments, sheet music, make instrument repairs, schedule guest clinicians to work with our students, present programs like “Electrify Your Strings”, purchase awards and plaques, etc. Running the concession stands at football & basketball games is our largest fundraiser and we need your help.

GET YOUR KRISPY KREME DONUTS Krispy Kreme donuts will be sold during the 4th quarter of every home football game. This is a wonderful fundraiser for our band program. The donuts are sold in a box of one dozen glazed donuts for $7.00 a box. The donuts are fresh baked and delicious! They often sell out quickly, especially when it is a beautiful night. We typically sell the donuts at the Main Gate to the football stadium. If the weather is not cooperating, we will set up under the Home Stands. Don’t miss out on this delicious treat! If you have any questions, please contact Amy Christian at amymc0621@ yahoo.com.

Why Join A Music Booster Group? The Surprising Benefits

Posted on February 4, 2015 in Music in a Minuet, Orchestrating Success Newsletter — September 17, 2015

Congratulations! Your child has decided to continue on as a music student. The program will be taking your child

to the next level, and providing incredible opportunities. But with those opportunities come more responsibilities; not

just for your child, but for the program as a whole. There’s way too much work for the teacher to handle, so the

booster club supplies a stream of volunteers.

That’s nice, you might think. But I’m way too busy for that.

Think again. Your kid’s teacher isn’t the only one who benefits from this arrangement. So why SHOULD you make

time to volunteer with the music booster group?

Do it for (your) children!

Each moment a music educator spends on administrative tasks is a moment that educator could be spending with a

student. YOUR student.

Because I value the hard work music educators do each day with hundreds of students and little to no administrative

support, I’m happy to pitch in with tasks that I enjoy. Plus I’d bet I could do that task much more quickly and easily

than the teacher could; a ten-minute task for me could save her 30 minutes, or an hour. That time goes right back

to the students, ensuring that my child gets a better experience.

Part of that experience may include more performance opportunities, which may in turn create more logistical

wrangling. I’d much rather the logistics get turned over to parent volunteers, ensuring that the teacher has the time

and energy to ensure that students are prepared to make the most of that opportunity.

Plus if you get involved with your kid’s music booster group, you’ll be in a perfect position to spend more time with

your teenage child. Sometimes kids this age tend to get a bit prickly, but they still want to know you’re there for

them. Being indirectly involved with their music program is the perfect compromise. You’ll be able to see their

progress, and who they’re hanging out with. You’ll catch all their performances, and be the first to catch their

triumphant smile after a powerful performance. What could be better than that?

Do it for your community

Music is singularly well positioned to build community. Local performance opportunities like concerts, football

games, and parades rally a community around the shared experience of the music provided by your kid’s ensemble.

So many community events are enhanced by the addition of musical performances. A parade without a marching

band? Lame. Adding carolers or small ensembles to holiday community events? Now THERE’S a reason to

bundle up.

Everyone within earshot will be improved by your student’s performance. Research says that “people who engage in the arts or watch others do so are more likely to be civically engaged, socially tolerant, and altruistic.” Source

While the lion’s share of the benefits go to the performers, even those who attend reap some benefit from the

experience.

These community performances, by the way, are wonderful opportunities to engage in some stealth music

education advocacy. Each pair of ears is likely attached to a voter. If they see your child’s music program as a

positive force in the community, next time a funding referendum happens, they’ll be that much more likely to vote

your way. Why should you care? It’ll make your kid’s experience better, it’ll strengthen the school and the district,

and will benefit students for years to come. Remember that bit about being civically engaged? That means these

music students—for year to come— will leave the program to spend their lives making the world, much less your

own community, a better place. And who doesn’t want that?

Do it for yourself

You’ll get something out of volunteering for your child’s music program, too! Research shows that volunteers benefit

in so many ways.

Volunteering for a group like a music booster group will strengthen your network personally and professionally.

Those connections will come in handy someday, whether it’s in your career or your social life. And though the

concept of making friends sounds trite, it’s really not. Many people have trouble making friends after college.

“As external conditions change, it becomes tougher to meet the three conditions that sociologists since the 1950s have considered crucial to making close friends: proximity; repeated, unplanned interactions; and a setting that encourages people to let their guard down and confide in each other.…” Source

Volunteering for a music booster group sure increases the possibility of increasing those interactions. As one

veteran music parent in my program puts it each year to freshman band parents, “Look around. Your new best

friend may be in this room.” The veteran parents nod—he’s right.

Consider using a music booster group as a laboratory you can use to pick up new hands-on skills. From

organizational skills to bookkeeping to logistics to communication to technology, there are so many important tasks

to be done, and likely a shortage of people to do them. Due to the nature of the beast, there are almost always

outgoing parents who are actively looking to teach someone the skills they’ve learned working for the organization.

And it’s a volunteer position, after all. If you mess up, what are they going to do—fire you?

Studies show that volunteers are happier. This article sums it up nicely.

Being generous leads us to perceive others more compassionately; we typically find good qualities in people

to whom we are kind

Being kind promotes a sense of connection and community with others, which is one of the strongest factors

in increasing happiness

Being generous helps us appreciate and feel grateful for our own good fortune

Being generous boosts our self-image; it helps us feel useful and gives us a way to use our strengths and

talents in a meaningful way

Being kind can start a chain reaction of positivity; being kind to others may lead them to be grateful and

generous to others, who in turn are grateful and kind to others

Your commitment as a volunteer also helps protect your health. Research indicates that volunteering can

decrease the social isolation that often accompanies depression, as well as improve conditions like heart disease

and chronic pain.

And perhaps the number one reason to volunteer is because it’s FUN! Most everyone involved with a music

program is in it for the right reasons, and it shows. The students have a blast, and that positive energy radiates

through the program. The experiences shared by everyone involved make happy memories for years to come.

Consider giving a hand to your child’s music program. Any way you look at it, your child’s music program is a force

for good: for students, the school, the community and beyond.

With a bit of luck, in a few years a healthier, happier you (and several new friends!) will wonder why you ever

hesitated.

FROM THE VICE-PRESIDENT ~ Wendy Donahue

Make new friends and have fun while supporting our kids! Here’s a way to help that won’t cost you a cent. Marching season is well underway with some big games coming up. Homecoming and Senior Night are right around the corner, and we could use some more help with concessions as many hands make light work. Volunteerism is always more fun with friends, so sign up together and bring a few friends with you! Not sure because you don’t know what to do? Don’t worry, we’ll show you! If every student had a family member give just a couple of hours for 2 games apiece, it would make a huge difference. Orchestra parents are especially needed and appreciated for the varsity games as band parents would love to watch their kids play the halftime show. Concessions are our biggest fundraiser and they support both orchestra and band students. Please visit SignupGenius to sign up to help with future games. Can’t help on a Friday night? There are JV games on Saturdays and Freshman games on Thursdays. Thanks to all the terrific volunteers who have come out to help as chaperones or concessions workers these past few weeks! MORE CONCESSION NEWS From Concessions Chair Sharon Alley

A BIG round of applause to all of you who have helped at our Concession Stands so far this year. SIMB and I truly

appreciate all of your efforts! Here is the link to the SIMB Web Page to sign up for the remaining football games:

http://www.strongnet.org/domain/194. (If the Mustangs make the playoffs, more opportunities could be scheduled.)

Please volunteer your time to help support the students' love of instrumental music. There are adult and student slots

available for all games. This is a fun way to get volunteer hours for Key Club, Honor Societies, Church or Scouts.

Orchestra students and parents are needed to support SIMB and work concessions because SIMB supports YOU – not just

band students! In addition, the parents of Band students would like to see their children perform on their home field on

Friday nights, therefore, ORCHESTRA PARENTS are especially needed for Homecoming (Oct. 3rd

) and Senior Night (Oct.

23rd

) to allow band parents the opportunity to participate with their child.

Sign up now for the date(s) and position you'd like most. Meet other music parents and we guarantee you'll have fun,

too. Seniors will be graduating very soon, so freshman, sophomore and junior parents… this is your opportunity to get

trained and learn the ropes for the coming years.

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions regarding the Marching Band Season

Q: What is “Call Time”? A: The time all students should be at the school to prepare for the upcoming event. The time posted in the Marching Band Handbook is the Call Time. Q: Does my child have to eat before Call Time? Can they wait until the game to buy something from the concession stand? Yes/No…Be sure your child has a meal prior to Friday night Call Times, as they will not be able to eat prior to 3

rd quarter (approx.

8pm). Most instrument groups (sections) organize home meals or meet at local restaurants prior to call time. It is critical that students are well hydrated = drink fluids prior to Call Time in the warm fall season as dehydration and nausea can easily occur to those overheating. No food or drinks are allowed on the buses. Q: My child’s uniform needs to be altered…does the uniform committee do the alterations? A: No. Students may bring their uniform home for alterations after the ALL BAND PHOTO on Friday morning after band camp. Only thread, needle and a basic stitch may be used to alter the hems and cuffs of uniforms…no permanent tape or glue or machine stitching. All pant hems should be approx. 1” off the ground. Students whose pant cuffs are too long and produce holes will be charged damage fees. Q: Can we keep the uniform at home? A: No. All uniforms must be properly hung and returned to the uniform room after each game or by Wednesday evening prior to the Friday game if they are taken home. Q: What do the students wear under their marching uniform? A: All marching students must wear their white marching band t-shirt and shorts/form-fitting pants (NO JEANS) under their uniform. Under Armour style shirts/pants may be worn under the uniform in colder weather along with the white band shirt. “Dinkles” are worn or brought to school and taken home after each game. They are not stored at school or in uniform garment bags. Q: Can a parent come into the school before or after a game to pick a student up? A: Unless you are a chaperone, uniform, or concession volunteer, you may not enter the building before or after games. When picking up a student after a game, you must park in one of the school parking lots. The main drop-off drive must remain clear for incoming buses. Q: How will I know when to pick my child up from an AWAY game? A: Your child can notify you with their cell phone or you may subscribe to Remind 101 for text messages. Text @2c992 to 81010. Trouble using 81010? Text 2c992 to (330) 754-4068. To receive messages via email, send an email to [email protected]. Q: What happens if it rains during a game and the uniform gets wet? A: All students are issued a raincoat. In the event of rain, Mr. King will instruct students to take their uniform, raincoat, and garment bags home and hang dry the uniform and raincoat on PLASTIC hangers separate from the garment bag. Once dry, properly re-hang uniform on assigned hangers and return entire garment bag and raincoat by Wednesday evening. DO NOT LEAVE WET UNIFORMS IN TRUNK OF CAR OR IN GARMENT BAG….permanent damage will occur. Q: What happens if the uniform gets dirty or smelly? A: Marching uniforms are dry clean only. Flag uniforms may be washed (find instructions on SIMB link). Mr. King will instruct the students when to take uniforms home for the mid-season cleaning. Super Cleaners at Pearl and Lunn Roads is the recommended dry cleaner (discounted charge). You will drop off, pick up, and pay for the cleaning (usually jacket and pants only). Clearly write your student’s last name on the dry cleaning receipt, place it in the garment bag, and return the entire uniform to school by Wednesday evening. The Uniform Committee regularly checks all uniforms for proper hanging and receipts. Students will be instructed when to take uniforms home for the end-of-the-season cleaning. Marching uniforms dropped off to Super Cleaners for final cleaning by a specified date will be paid for from the uniform maintenance charge. EACH STUDENT HAS BEEN INSTRUCTED ON HOW TO PROPERLY HANG THEIR UNIFORM. STUDENTS WHO DO NOT PROPERLY HANG UNIFORMS OR RETURN THEM BY DESIGNATED DEADLINES WILL LOSE POINTS ON THEIR FIRST QUARTER GRADE. Q: Fundraisers….what are they and why do we need them? A: Concession stands, hoagie sale, mattress sale, donut and candy sales, poinsettia flower sale, Southpark Mall games/decorations work opportunities, etc… All of these fundraisers provide money to students via their music accounts and to SIMB to purchase instruments, music, awards, plaques, bring in special clinicians, etc. Students are given detailed information regarding each fundraiser. The mattress sale requires students to hand out flyers and advertise the sale via posters in small groups on street corners. Your support of these fundraisers continues the excellence in our music programs. Feel free to contact Sandy Treudler at [email protected] with any additional questions.

NEXT PAGE? TIPS FOR PARENTS

?

TIPS FOR PARENTS Strongsville High School has a fabulous music program that depends not only on the talents of our students, but also on the support from their parents. Below are some tips to help parents understand the operations of our Musical Mustangs! STEP #1…Get Reminders: All parents and students should sign up for Mr. King’s Strongsville H.S. Bands Messages

To receive messages via text go to Remind 101: https://www.remind.com/join/2c992

To receive messages via email, send an email to [email protected]

(All personal information remains completely confidential…teachers do not see your # and you do not see theirs.) Frequently check the school’s music department calendar for any changes to previous schedules. STEP #2…Be sharp: Become a member of the Strongsville Instrumental Music Boosters (SIMB) each year to help support the music programs throughout our schools…without you, we’re just plain flat! STEP #3…Sign up: Volunteer for at least two activities like concessions (Freshman, JV, and Varsity Football and basketball games), chaperones, uniforms, or other “as needed” opportunities. We have over 300 families in our music program and expect each family to help out just 2 times each year. You will have a great time getting to know other parents.

How do I sign up for volunteer opportunities? Log onto SignupGenius.com and type either

[email protected] OR [email protected] into the Search Box.
