Second PlaceThe Story of UsKristen SchmidtColumbus MonthlySlice-of-life stories can be hard to organize into a coherent whole, but this entry shows it can be done in an engaging and organized way. Clean layout unifies the disparate insights of interview subjects.
Third PlaceThe Magic MakersKristy EckertCapital StyleThis series of short, engagingly written pro-files captures leaders in action and avoids merely telling us readers why this camp is so worthwhile. Reporting this way takes time and skill. Both pay off in this entry.
FEATuRES: cOnSuMERFirst PlaceThe Crave 10Beth StallingsColumbus CraveIf you’ll pardon the pun: “The Crave 10” is a feast of a feature. Columbus Crave takes advantage of all the luxuries provided by the magazine format, playing with layout and orientation, presenting a colossal amount of information in a wide variety of ways. While there were features among the other entries that were as well-written, the creative design and presentation offer the reader a unique experience and make “The Crave 10” consum-able and valuable for readers whether they’re settling in to read each and every word or grazing for highlights.
Second PlaceSweet EndingsBeth StallingsColumbus Monthly “Sweet Endings” is nicely written and beautifully illustrated, but it’s the organiza-tion of the content that really makes this feature such a strong showpiece. Columbus Monthly’s smart, thoughtful approach of organizing the featured desserts into categories – some conventional, some less so – effectively asks readers the same question a server would ask when making a dessert recommendation: “What are you in the mood for?” It’s a treatment that’s perfectly suited to the subject matter.
Third PlaceHoly Doughnuts! It’s Festival Season!Staff Cincinnati MagazineThis story was fun to read and fun to look at - appropriate given the subject matter. Go-ing beyond dates and locations, Cincinnati Magazine took a look at the personalities and traditions that characterize each of the events included in this Technicolor roundup of local festivals. Like the urban art form, Meacham’s cooking at Kraft House No. 5 is big, bold and full of swagger.”
Second PlaceSpill ItMike BreenCincinnati City Beat Mike Breen’s writing on music brings both the music and the artists to life. This writer sold me with their review of Sleep’s “Branded: The Damon Winton Story.” It’s not easy to make varied genres accessible to people who might not normally indulge in them, but his is the type of writing that can pique interest beyond the usual fan base.
Third Placelaura Adiletta
Cleveland MagazineLaura Adiletta takes Third Place for her style of weaving excellent restaurant and restaurateur profiles into her reviews of each establishment and its food. More than most other writers in this competition, Adiletta allowed readers not only to indulge in the food reviews, but also to get to know the heart behind each establishment -- the people inspired to delve into the culinary world. My favorites among her collection presented here are “Menu with a Mission” and “Raising the Barn.”
