Call for Session Proposals

Background: The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) is presenting its 2016 Annual Conference in Cleveland, OH from September 25-28, 2016. This is an opportunity to highlight success stories, lessons learned, share cutting-edge ideas, and engage your colleagues at the premier event for economic development practitioners. IEDC is seeking compelling session proposals to ensure a comprehensive program. The conference theme is “Ready to Rock: Economic Development Through Technology, Innovation, and Productivity”

Session proposals should address trends and topics that reflect the wide-ranging needs and interests of IEDC’s diverse membership. Concurrent sessions will be organized into four tracks:

1. Reinvesting in Your Physical, Social and Economic Assets2. Key Connections in the Public, Private, and Nonprofit Sectors3. Economic Diversification as a Cornerstone to Reinvention and Long-Term Stability4. The Creative Class and Its Contribution to Innovation, Arts and Culture

Conference Audience: IEDC is the world's largest membership organization serving the economic development profession. From public to private, rural to urban and local to international, our members represent the entire range of economic development experience.

Guidelines:

Please read the following guidelines carefully before submitting your session proposal.● All organizations proposing sessions must be current members of IEDC.● Proposed speakers who are economic development professionals and/or consultants must

be current members of IEDC for the proposal to be considered.● IEDC reserves the right to accept only the topic, title, one or more speakers and

moderator or any combination of the above list. ● IEDC reserves the right to add, edit or make changes to the session title, description, and

mode of presentation, panel and moderator. ● All proposals become property of IEDC upon receipt. Session topics or speaker

recommendations not accepted for the Annual Conference may be used in future IEDC conferences, newsletters and resources.

● Members may submit a proposal with a minimum of one speaker for the panel. IEDC may confirm additional speakers and a moderator to complete the panel.

● Panels that include communities of multiple sizes and states and countries are strongly encouraged. IEDC does not recommend sessions composed of all consultants or representatives from just one community, company or state unless it is a case study.

● In order to keep membership dues and registration fees to a minimum for our members, IEDC is unable to pay speaker’s or moderator’s travel expenses, honorarium or speaker’s bureau fees.

● IEDC reserves the right to combine session proposals on similar topics into one session.● Speakers and moderators interested in attending the conference will be expected to

register and pay for the conference. Speakers are invited to attend the session before or after their session excluding meals and receptions without paying the registration fee.

● Speakers may only speak or moderate in one session during the conference program. Speakers who are proposed for several sessions will be confirmed for only one session.

● Members proposing sessions are responsible for confirming proposed speakers and moderators upon acceptance of session proposal.

● IEDC strives for speaker and moderator diversity, especially gender, racial, geographic, and type and size of community.

Proposed speakers or moderators without biographies will not be considered.

Please contact IEDC at [email protected] via email with any questions regarding conference proposals. For more details about IEDC, visit our website at www.iedconline.org. You will be notified via e-mail regarding a decision on your proposal by March 2016. All proposals will be kept on file for one year for consideration for future conferences.

If the session proposal is accepted, the person that submitted the proposals will be responsible for confirming the moderator and speakers before April 2016.

2016 Annual Conference Track Descriptions

Let’s get ready to rock! Economic development of a community inevitably goes through ups and downs; the key is having an economic development team that sees the challenges, opportunities and future areas of growth and does not lose the determination to keep their community rocking for decades to come. The IEDC 2016 Annual Conference draws on the inspirational story of Cleveland and Northeast Ohio– through its rise as a powerhouse industrial economy, its adaption to new economic realities and its rebirth through reinvestment in institutions, infrastructures and relationships. This conference will showcase how economic developers are at the helm of shaping their communities – communities that emerge as stronger, more resilient and ready to rock.

Track 1 - Reinvesting in Your Physical, Social and Economic Assets

As the world economy turns and markets fluctuate, new demands arise for communities to redevelop their existing infrastructure. Existing assets that become obsolete with the changing market demands need to be either repurposed or replaced; including the repurposing of obsolete office buildings, neighborhood reinvestment, and the transformation of education systems. Sessions in this track will focus on the tools and resources communities can use to reinvest in their existing assets in order to position them well for future economic development.

Track 2 - Key Connections in the Public, Private, and Nonprofit Sectors

Economic development has been, and always will be, a collaborative effort among those in the community. Local government, nonprofits, private stakeholders, real estate developers, philanthropic organizations, and private equity all play a role in a community’s development. Establishing relationships between these types of organizations lays the foundation for the growth of a community. Sessions in this track will demonstrate strategies for communities to create sustainable jobs for their regions, harness the collective innovation and capital to drive investments, and foster growth in emerging technologies and industries that will ensure a prosperous future.

Track 3 - Economic Diversification as a Cornerstone to Reinvention and Long-Term Stability

The ebb and flow of economic cycles affect each sector differently. Maintaining a healthy mix of industries helps keep a regional economy balanced and resilient. The key to sustainable economic growth is for communities to nurture their core strengths while shifting focus on new industries. From embracing new technologies and innovations in legacy sectors, to welcoming

promising cutting-edge industries, economic reinvention and diversification is the key to long-term stability. As the old song goes, make new friends but keep the old, sessions in this track will explore strategies to strengthen existing businesses and assets while cultivating new, globally competitive industries.

Track 4 - The Creative Class and Its Contribution to Innovation, Arts and Culture

Successful cities are judged by their character and the character of the people that come from it. Creating a city’s personality that is known to be livable, lively, and full of opportunity is a collective effort. Amenities such as theaters, museums, cultural institutions, research centers, institutes of higher education and the surrounding area developments and public art installations build the brand and desirability of your community to talented workers and companies. Cultivating a community of people to perform, visit and create in this creative city will only increase the desirability of your city to businesses and talent. A community truly comes to life through the artists who call it home. Sessions in this track will highlight best practices and strategies from communities around the globe in making communities exciting locations to live, work and play.
