Dear Girl Scout Friends:

Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas strives to be the very best organization to help girls thrive in the 21st century – and the progress made in fiscal year 2015 contributed to that goal.

Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas continues to transform internally to better serve our volunteers. With the integration of new technology, Girl Scout volunteers received access to tools to make their experience more efficient and rewarding. Today, hundreds of leaders are planning through the Volunteer Toolkit, more than any other council in the country. The streamlined technology, the new onboarding and training, and increased support from council is improving the volunteer experience.

A commitment to 21st century programming brought new program opportunities for girls. The launch of the Girl Scout Leadership Institute provided valuable and unique experiences for 9th through 12th grade Girl Scouts – experiences that they can’t get anywhere else. For girls of all ages, the STEM Summer Series provided outstanding programing in science, technology, engineering and math to nearly 700 girls. Relevant, exciting and progressive programming is what families want – and girl retention is growing.

That commitment to STEM is getting attention from our entire community. From government officials to corporate leaders to generous donors, the STEM Center of Excellence at Camp Whispering Cedars in southern Dallas is recognized as a force to change the workforce pipeline. After securing permitting, construction began on the camp on July 1 and will continue for the next few years as we raise record dollars, continue substantial construction and develop innovative, collaborative programming for the girls in our community.

We even survived – and thrived – with a fair number of challenges in our way. Mother Nature’s record rainfall closed Camp Rocky Point and caused damage at other camps but didn’t stop nearly 1,500 girls from enjoying robust summer camp experiences. A cookie shortage was a bump in the road on the way to a record cookie season, with more cookie divas than ever before.

Being the very best at what we do takes leadership, focus, hard work and significant investment. We are proud of how far we’ve come and are excited about where we are headed. Thank you for joining us on this journey – and for investing in girls in Northeast Texas.

In 2015, we continued our focus on improving and enhancing the Girl Scout volunteer experience. These changes are in response to the feedback from our current and future volunteers and are designed to lay the foundation for future girl growth and community impact. The implementation of the Customer Engagement Initiative was completed this year.

New technology introduced efficient, effective and customer-focused business practices to better equip us to serve the volunteers of today and the future. We are pleased to share that 690 Daisy, Brownie and Junior troop leaders created annual plans through the Volunteer Toolkit. New volunteers are experiencing a streamlined, multi-modal onboarding and equipping process, including the New Leader Passport. And technology upgrades continue with a generous $205,000 in-kind grant from Microsoft and other community support. The best news is that the feedback from our volunteers is positive and our ratings continue to rise as we evolve to meet the needs of today’s leader.

By providing opportunities for girls that instill confidence, build character and develop leadership skills, Girl Scouts is playing a pivotal role in preparing young women to be active

and productive contributors in their communities. We are proud to support them in this mission, especially as they reach out to girls who have not traditionally been active in scouting, and we are excited about the opportunities for growth that will be offered through the STEM Center of Excellence and all of the other enriching activities at Camp Whispering Cedars. Through its work,

Girl Scouts is helping change the course of these girls’ lives.

Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas provided its first STEM Summer Series in Summer 2015. This robust and progressive offering of STEM programs was administered in collaboration with industry experts to provide 685 girls unique, hands-on experiences in STEM in a girl-friendly environment. Girls explored topics such as biology, chemistry, ecology, 3D imaging, engineering, architectural design, environmental science, computer coding, filmmaking, technology, and so much more. With the addition of college and corporate visits and STEM mentors, Girl Scouts literally changed the way girls think about STEM.

GSD provides girls in kindergarten through fifth grade at 11 sites in underserved communities with an authentic Girl Scout experience

Las Mariposas provides a traditional Girl Scout experience for girls in first through fifth grade who are not traditional English speakers

GSSD is aimed at addressing targeted middle school issues and providing exposure to STEM, healthy living and more through twelve 45-minute sessions held throughout the year during the school day

Each year, Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas serves 4,000 girls in grades K-8 through outreach programs, also known as the Gift of Girl Scouting. These programs, including Girl Scouts Direct (GSD), Las Mariposas (LM) and Girl Scouting in the School Day (GSSD), are delivered in and after school where girls would not otherwise get to participate in Girl Scouts due to a lack of financial resources, transportation and volunteers.

With a commitment of nearly $1 million, Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas is changing the lives of these low-income, high-potential girls by giving them access to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. In addition to outstanding curriculum delivered on a weekly basis, girls get the full Girl Scout experience including participation in the cookie program, field trips and overnights at camp. For the first time this year, girls also attended summer camp and had the opportunity to earn higher awards.

As a single parent, I can’t teach her the girly

things. You do that, but also teach her that if she

Launched in 2015, the Girl Scout Leadership Institute is a new initiative to empower and equip high school girls to pursue higher education and expose them to a variety of career opportunities. The Institute gives girls, grades 9-12, the chance to visit local corporations and universities, gain access to female role models and empower girls to posi-tively impact their communities now and in the future.

The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. Open only to girls in high school, this prestigious award challenges girls to change the world—or at least their corner of it.

In Northeast Texas,

girls received the Gold Award projects in STEM scholarships given

Girl Scout Gold Award

GOLD AWARD HIGHLIGHT

Lilirose Bryne

Lilirose Byrne’s Gold Award project provided support to the children of refugees from the Chin State in western Burma.  By working with preschool children and their parents, her goal was to have the children ready to enter kindergarten on an equal footing with other students.  She and her volunteers introduced math and reading in a fun and positive way, while helping them adapt to a new culture and language.  The program will be continued by the Chin Refugee Ministry.

Lilirose Byrne shared that “earning and achieving the Girl Scout Gold Award has made me passionate about driving meaningful change in our communities, and given me the opportunity to have experience doing so at a young age. I was able to develop leadership, work with passionate people, and create something positive to improve the educational outlook of a group of ESL children.” In addition, the Girl Scout Gold Award set her apart in the college and job application process. Lilirose graduated from North Hills Preparatory in 2015 and currently attends Northeastern University in Boston where she is majoring in Bioengineering and minoring in Graphic and Information Design.

During the 2014 Women of Distinction Luncheon, we recognized four outstanding women who have made significant contributions to our community, and who believe strongly in the power of the girl. Together we raised $481,000 to bring the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to more girls, enabling them to discover what’s important to them, connect with their community, and take action to make the world a better place.
