2014 was a great year for the NRF. To start things off, 1968 Olympian

Charlie Hamlin joined us as the Executive Director, bringing with him his

strong rowing bio as well as his incredible energy and enthusiasm.

In June, we added a strong group to the National Rowing Hall of Fame,

continuing our support of the legends that inspire the next generation

to do even more. Sadly we also closed down the Hall of Fame museum

exhibit at Mystic Seaport after an 8 year run, but Bill Miller, Tom Weil,

Tom Sanford, and other dedicated volunteers have carefully placed all

the artifacts in storage and we look forward to opening a new exhibit

soon!

The team performed well in Amsterdam and is well positioned for Rio

(more on this from Curtis) and they wouldn't have been able to this

without your generosity. We gave $1.1 million to USRowing this year,

the largest grant in the history of the NRF and first over $1 million.

That's up 50% and 280% respectively from the average annual grants

in the London and Beijing quadrennials. The team needs these funds to

compete and we will need to continue to find more support to close the

funding and performance gaps with other nations.

We are so excited to part of this great team and we look forward to

cheering alongside you in the years to come.

Go USA!

Increasing total sources of funds by $197,000 to $1,798,000

Increasing Grant eligible funds by $200,000 to $1,244, 000

Processing $312,000 of Pass-Through funds for the support primarily of the U23 team

Increasing our Grant to USRowing for the seven high priority, Olympic class boats by $135,000 to $1,090,000.

Experiencing the growth of our endowments after distributionsby $32,000 to $5,636,000

Achieving a ratio of marketing and administrative costs to funds raised of 19.7%

Our singular disappointment was falling short of achieving our Grant goal of $1,200,000. As the year drew to a close, several major year-end donations failed to materialize.2014 was a year of new initiatives. We implemented a strategy dubbed the Regatta Grant Project (“RGP”) wherein we succeeded in getting sixteen major regattas to embrace the concept of increasing their entry fees by $1.00/seat and donating the resulting funds to the NRF. The RGP raised $60,000 in new funds.

We partnered with the US Lightweight Rowing Association (USLRA) to raise funds for the high priority lightweight Olympic boats: the LM4, the LW2x and the LM2x which earned the right to be a priority boat with a top four finish at the second World Cup Regatta. Total raised was $85,000, $72,500 in new funds.

As we look to 2015, the penultimate preparation year and the 2016 Olympics that are less than 17 months away, we plan to build on the successes of 2014 and raise our Grant to the Senior Team to$1,100,000 and to the Junior Team, $100,000. With your continuing support we can meet these goals and even better, exceed them. Remember, the U.S. is the only major rowing country that provides no government support to its Olympic team. With your generosity in 2015 we can overcome this resource challenge and see our athletes on themedal stand in 2016.

Thanks again and all the best,

Charlie, Mara, Tom and Gill

to All NRF DoNoRS:

On behalf of the NRF staff and more importantly the athletes of our 2014 national teams, I thank you for you generosity, good will, and support of the National Rowing Foundation. I am pleased to report that 2014 was a successful year. The NRF saw substantial growth in our fund raising efforts, in our support of the Senior, U23 and Junior teams, and in the growth of our endowments. Highlights include:

USRowing is fortunate to have a diverse and vibrant family of partners contributing to our athletes’ success. The NRF stands second only to the USOC as our largest partner, funding the coaching, equipment, travel and training expenses of our athletes.

USRowing athletes face the challenge of competing against countries whose programs receive two to four times the financial support as ours. True to the American way, this proves no hindrance to our athletes, who arrive at the starting line knowing that donors like you helped create that opportunity. The NRF community provides opportunities for excellence and the platform to continue our tradition of winning.

Our teams cannot achieve their potential without you. From every athlete, coach and team member at USRowing, we thank the National Rowing Foundation for rowing up to that starting line with us. Our medals, dreams and goals are the same. Thank you for being part of our team.

Go USA!

Erin & Glenn

eRiN o’coNNell, pReSiDeNt AND GleNN MeRRy, ceo

In the history of the Olympic movement, the National Rowing Foundation has never played as critical a role in the success of USRowing’s athletes and programs as it does today. Internationally, the U.S. stands alone as the only Olympic team funded solely through corporate and private partners, without government funding.

In 2013 we corralled the country’s best athletes and hired a new coaching staff;

In 2014 we developed our athletes and proved in Amsterdam the success of our staff and strategies;

In 2015 we are honing the skills, physicality and racing acumen of our athletes;

In 2016 our athletes will enter the Olympics fully capable to win against the best in the world.

We started the Rio quadrennial with a focused, four year strategy to maximize the success of our athletes and

our medal count at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro:

HiGH peRFoRMANce DiRectoR uSRowiNGCurtis Jordan

The first two years were very successful and we are now well into our third. In 2014, 9 boats made the A finals and 5 medaled, an outstanding performance. Our athletes show every indication that our team will do even better at the 2015 Worlds in France. We are on track for Rio.

The team and I extend our thanks to the NRF for its major role in making our strategies and system a success.

First, the NRF has made it possible hire and retain the best coaches; sending a clear message to our athletes that we will provide them with the best possible coaching talent.

Second, with the additional funds received, we have been able to give our top athletes more competition and development opportunities than in the past. Our goal is to provide our athletes with the same assets and experience as their competitors.

Third, we now have the funds to provide better and more consistent access to physical therapy and medical care to our athletes. This keeps them healthy and in the game longer.

We are now at a point in our preparation that every dollar has a significant impact on the athletes’ potential and the success of the system in which they work. We look to our continuing partnership with the NRF and its support to ensure that our athletes may realize their dreams and ours of gold in Rio.

Thank you for supporting our U.S. National Teams.

Best,

Curtis

Let me start by saying thank you. If you’re getting a copy of this Annual Report, that means at some point this year, I was able to do what I do because you supported the National Rowing Foundation.

Starting out on the Team as a young athlete is about survival and doing whatever it takes to make it; staying on the Team for more than a season or two takes calculated and long-term planning and investment in your goals and performance.

The same is true for the financial support of our National Teams. As a veteran athlete on the Team, I recognize the importance of training and planning for performance not just harder, but also smarter. By supporting

AtHleteS oF tHe yeARGrant James

Thank you to the NRF for all your support. All the help you do for

us is amazing. We could not be competitive without you. Thanks to

each and every one, from the donors to those who make the NRF run

smoothly.

At the international level every detail becomes very important especially

as we point for the Olympics in Rio. All of our competitors are big and

fast so the support the NRF provides in funding our training, enabling

biomechanics assessment, great coaching, trainers and more count for

speed on the water.

The NRF’s support builds confidence knowing our team can travel to

international competitions and have the proper equipment when we

get there. Dedication and generosity cannot even begin to describe

the NRF but it is these things that have made the difference in winning

America medals.

the NRF, you have allowed us to make calculated investments in our athletes that will allow us to compete with the top rowing nations in the world. We are able to travel, race and train with the very best coaches, equipment and resources, but only through the help of the NRF.

I am in my ninth season training with the US National Team, and with each passing year I have become more aware of how crucial it is for our Team to have the support of the NRF, and of donors like you. We have an unbelievably talented group of young women that have come in to the Training Center in the past two years, and who will be taking over the Team when it’s time for veterans like myself to move on from National Team competition. With your continued support and investments in their success, we can help them to continue to redefine what it means to be a part of the best women’s rowing team in the world in 2015, 2016 and beyond.

Supporting the

nrF and our national

teamS

At the age of twenty, having coxed at Penn

for less than two years, I was selected to my

first National Team, steering the lightweight eight at

the World Championships in Amsterdam in 1977. It was a

magical summer, one of the best of my life, and I remember clearly

the thrill of being selected, the pride of wearing the USA colors, and the

Why i give

John Chatzky

excitement of competing against the best athletes in the world. Our boat

rowed poorly and raced even worse, but despite our bad performance the

experience was the best I’d had in my life up until that point.

In recent years I have learned, however, that the pride, the joy, and the

excitement of racing as a young man is nowhere near as rewarding as

supporting today’s athletes, both the men and the women. They train

year round, putting careers and family on hold in pursuit of their quest.

They torture themselves in their daily workouts then come back with

a smile for more each and every day. They are the closest of friends

on and off the water, yet understand that there are a limited number

of seats and not enough for all of them to share. They are committed,

determined, cheerful, articulate and the best that our nation has to

offer. I support them as much as I can with my time, with my experience

and with my money. Wearing the colors in competition almost forty

years ago was thrilling but not even close to watching four of our finest

athletes win a gold medal at a recent World Championships, rowing in

a racing shell that carried my name. I will continue to support both the

NRF and our athletes for as long as I can.

“I have been involved with the National team since 1984,

first as an athlete and then as a team physician and NRF

Director. Like many, rowing has impacted my life in countless

ways and John and I feel strongly that it is critical to give back to the

sport that helped shape us. Support of our national team athletes

permits them to train and compete at the highest level with focus, great

coaching and racing opportunities. We challenge any athlete who has

been positively impacted by our sport to make a donation in support of

our incredibly committed and gifted athletes.”

Why do I give to the NRF?

Rowing changed my life. Of course I

became an athlete, but I also developed as

a person, acquiring a deeper understanding of

the power of dreaming and the effort and perseverance

required to realize something seemingly impossible. As

much as I love rowing, that’s not why I give to the NRF. Training

to compete at the highest echelons of sport is hard enough.Uniquely,

American athletes do not receive financial support from our

government, leaving funding to private individuals and the athletes

themselves. Training requires prodigious dedication, time, and energy.

Access to this opportunity should be determined by boat-moving ability,

not financial capacity.

Competing at the Olympic Games is an extraordinary experience for

every athlete lucky enough to do so, but viewing the Games is an

inspiring experience for the rest of us. Offering a vision of humanity we

cannot afford to lose, this worldwide community event brings together

people from all over the world and shows what’s possible when they

bring their best. Our world needs the Olympic Games. When I invest in

American rowers, I contribute to that vital movement which unites us

in our admiration of greatness, showcases our common humanity, and

demonstrates the power to dream within all of us that can transform

the world.

In 1956 the Yale varsity eight won the Olympic Trials in

early July and then (unbelievable, now), broke up and went

home for summer vacation, as there were no funds to cover the

cost of maintaining our fitness until the November Olympics in Australia.

Resuming training in mid-August, our loss in the first heat of the

Olympics was our first race in five months. Any surprise we lost? Too

bad that there wasn’t an NRF then, we could have used its help.

My mates and I have long been supporters of the NRF because we have

wanted to ensure that our national teams would be fully prepared to

represent the U.S. We are pleased to know that NRF funds go directly

to our most deserving athletes to make sure that they are fit and

prepared to represent the best the U.S. has in international competition.

Both of us feel that rowing provided us with the

experiences that, outside of family, defined our young

adulthood. Some of our fondest and happiest memories, as well

as our toughest defeats, are associated with the sport. The camaraderie

of training on a university squad, the gradual acquisition of technique, the

pressure of race day and, ultimately, the privilege of representing the USA

in international competition have enriched our lives beyond measure.

We fully believe in the mission of the NRF. Support of the US National

Rowing team and providing financing for today’s athletes to have

similar experiences to our own, and excel even further, is a critical role.

We know Curtis Jordan and many of the coaches personally, and are

excited about the talent and experience that they bring to the National

Squad. It is obvious to us how dedicated, talented and extremely hard-

working today’s athletes are, and we feel it is a privilege to support their

efforts. Simply put, without the NRF, there would be drastically reduced

opportunities for these exceptional athletes to accomplish what they

have in international competition.

2014 NRF DoNoR liSt coNtiNueD...

the united StateS lightWeight

roWing aSSociation

The United States Lightweight Rowing Association

(USLRA) was founded in 2012 shortly after the London

Olympics. A small group of young and recent National Team and

Olympic lightweight rowers came together around two basic goals

- to develop a network of current and former lightweight rowers and

to raise money to support the lightweight rowers training for the 2016

Olympics and beyond.

In 2014, the NRF and the USLRA created a partnership to focus on

these goals together. We are now working together to energize the

lightweight community and to build dedicated support for the Olympic

lightweight movement. The NRF and USRowing have delivered a

financial model of fair and equitable treatment for all of the priority

events, including the lightweights, and the lightweight community is

rallying behind their leadership. The excitement is palpable and the

progress has been material, with first time donors coming forward to

help our national teams, some in significant amounts.

The USLRA is looking forward to extending this partnership with the

NRF into 2015 and eventually 2016, with the shared goal of putting

our lightweight Olympic boats into contention to win medals in Rio

and beyond!

Sincerely,

The Board of the USLRA

Sources of Funds

The NRF accepts both restricted and

unrestricted/designated gifts from our donors. It

is our policy to use the unrestricted annual gifts, gifts

to the National Team, and endowment income to support our

National Teams. Gifts that are restricted are used in the manner

designated by the donor.

Our 2014 (unaudited) results show total contributions and endowment
