ASPEN CYCLING CLUB P.O. Box 4945, Aspen, CO 81612 Email: [email protected] For 2015, the Aspen Cycling Club has made some important changes. The Aspen Club has come on board as ACC’s Title Sponsor; we have a new Race Director, Lisa Poole; a new race category, Senior Men B; and the Marshal points system has been modified. We will have a full schedule of 10 road and 9 mountain bike races starting on April 29 and ending with our banquet at the Limelight Hotel on September 16. The race schedule features “classic” ACC races, new variations of some of the classics as well as entirely new races - the Xterra course at The Tree Farm in El Jebel and an Aspen Mountain Circuit course. New for 2015, you MUST Marshal one race, road or mountain, in order to qualify for end of season championship standings. No ACC points will be awarded for your first Marshal effort. Each additional race marshaled will be awarded 15 points to the road or mountain bike series as selected by the ACC member. A new and improved Marshal sign up system will be in place to make planning and scheduling your marshaling commitments easier for everyone. Senior Men B – A new category, Senior Men B, has been added to encourage participation of riders that want to ride A distance courses, but do not want to compete with the Senior Men A level riders. Senior Men B will start 2 minutes after the Senior Men A. Lisa Poole takes over as ACC’s new race director from Susan Carollo (Mouse). Lisa is an experienced bike racer and Aspen Ambulance District EMT and will bring new energy and ideas to the ACC. Mouse will assist with getting Lisa up to speed and Assistant Race Director Ned Ryerson will be back. Races cannot be put on without the help of the club members, friends, and family. Every member is required to marshal at least one race this season to qualify for end of season rankings. Every time you marshal a race your name will be added into a special end-of-season raffle; the more you marshal the more chances you’ll have to win. I am pleased to announce The Aspen Club as a Title Sponsor as well as the return of Shane Aspen Real Estate and Alpine Bank as the Aspen Cycling Club’s Presenting Sponsors. Aspen Sports has also come on as a new sponsor. A huge thanks to all our 2015 sponsors! These sponsors make it possible for us to continue to offer an exceptional and low-cost race series. Please keep these businesses in mind as you look for goods and services in the valley. Thanks to the support of our sponsors, the cost of participating in ACC races remains an extraordinary value—the full season road and mountain package ($135.00) covers your membership fee and entry into 18 races—less than many single-day events in Colorado. If you elect not to purchase a season race package, race-day registration is $5.00 for members, $10.00 for non-members. Membership and race entry is FREE for Kids and High School/ Middle School categories! We offer online membership registration and race-package purchase via www.GetEvent.com. ACC absorbs all Get Event fees AND offers a $5.00 discount versus payment by mail or at a race start. Online registration simplifies membership registration for competitors and expedites early season data entry for results tabulation. To register online, go to the ACC web site “Application” page and follow the link to PreRace. I encourage anyone who plans to race regularly to purchase one of the race packages when registering—this allows you to race several races for free, eliminates the need to bring your $5.00 to each race, and expedites race- day registration. Race package prices include your membership dues. You may still register by filling out an application form (attached to the newsletter or downloaded from the website). On Wednesday, July 29th, we will partner with Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers to hold a trails- maintenance night. Trail selection, meeting time and other details are to be determined, but we will work till dusk and follow the work session with a dinner and drinks. To encourage as many club members as possible to join the trail crew that night, participants receive 30 ACC race points toward the mountain and combined series. In addition to our members’ labor, ACC uses a portion of the membership dues to make a cash donation to Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers. As trail users and mountain biking enthusiasts, it is our responsibility to help maintain trails in our community. We encourage you to contact RFOV at www.rfov.org to find additional opportunities to help maintain local trails. Mike Maple WELCOME TO THE 2015 ASPEN CYCLING CLUB RACING SEASON. There will be five races held during the 2015 season for children ages 6 to 13. The kid’s series will kick off on May 6th this year with a new race at CRMS in Carbondale. It will be followed by two races in June, one in Snowmass Village and one at Buttermilk. One race will be held in July and the season finale will take place in late August. Kid’s races begin 15 minutes before the adult and junior divisions, typically around 5:45 pm, but check the weekly race announcements throughout the season for any changes. Please note

that ANY TYPE OF BIKE CAN BE USED. These races are FREE, but a parent or guardian must sign a waiver before the child can race. We will have end of season awards for all competitors, including recognition of overall boy and girl champions. We encourage and need parents to help out on race day. Come out and cheer on our little racers!

BIKE TYPESAny type of bike can be ridden in any discipline. (See ACC Race Rules for exceptions). Points will be awarded if you ride a bike that is specific to or considered a disadvantage to ride in that discipline (i.e. an MTB in a road race or cyclocross race). THE ASPEN CYCLING CLUB GENERALLY FOLLOWS USAC RULES. FOR COMPLETE RULES SEE:

http://usacycling.org/usa-cycling-rule-book.htm

■ ACC numbers must be visible during ACC competitions. ■ Road Race numbers are to be vertically affixed to the right upper torso. ACC Race numbers may not be altered.

■ All competitors must keep to the right of the yellow center line throughout a race including at the finish line. In the event that there is no center line indicated on the road, riders must stay to the right half of the road.

■ Racers starting at different times/start waves are not allowed to draft, pace or help nor interfere with racers from other start times.

■ If you finish in a pack, check in with volunteer marshals to verify finish position.

■ For Time Trials, competitors must arrive at the start queue no later than 30 seconds before their start and start from a full stop.

PROTESTS The Race Director will consider corrections to race results until the end of the day following a race. Race results will be final 24 hours after the initial posting of each race’s results. Wait until after an event is over before talking to finish line officials.

POINTS OF ETIQUETTE & RULES ■ Please stay completely off the pavement with your bike when stopped before and after road races.

■ Courteously alert other riders and racers when overtaking them. Do not impede the progress of a passing rider. This is especially important in mountain bike races when riders from different classes frequently overtake one another.

■ Point out upcoming hazards such as potholes or debris to other riders. ■ Take the time to learn cycling etiquette, tactics, and how to ride in a pace line. If you are uncertain of how or why you should do something, ask an experienced racer.

■ Ride fast, have fun and be safe!

Rider Responsibility Of Good Sportsmanship

CONGRATULATIONS 2014 CHAMPIONS!

The ACC Adopt a Trail day will again be held on a Wednesday night in place of one of our weekly races. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, July 29, 2015. The final location will be determined in July and listed on our website and race announcements. And if giving something back to the trail system that is such a big part of our outdoor recreation isn’t enough reason to participate, remember the points! Yes, you get points for doing a good deed. Plus, you have a great excuse for a “rest” day, well sort of, not that it’s an easy day. Your day of trail work will be worth a full 30 points for everyone that participates. As with last year “RULE CHANGE FOR 2015,” we will no longer offer points for weekend trail work projects. Wednesday July 29th will be your only opportunity to earn trail work points this season.

The Aspen Cycling Club will again partner with Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers (RFOV) for our Adopt-a-Trail day. For 20 years, RFOV has been building, improving and maintaining trails throughout the valley. Their work benefits local trail users and tourists alike. RFOV has completed 147 projects, built 29 new trails, and improved and repaired over 256 miles of trails on public lands from Aspen to Rifle. As ardent users of the trails, it has been a natural fit for the Aspen Cycling Club to partner with RFOV over the years. Reminders, including what to bring for trail work, will be sent out closer to this event.

The Woody Creek Sports Car Club and Track is the location of the annual Woody Creek Criterium. This is a PRIVATE club and is on PRIVATE property. They generously allow us to hold our annual race there with no benefit to them. However, this privilege is dependent upon our following their guidelines. This year’s race will occur on Wednesday, July 8th. Arrive early to ensure that you will have time to warm up. DO NOT venture onto the course at any other time, as you will be arrested for trespassing! By respecting this private property, we will keep our privilege to race on the course.

PLEASE CONSIDER THIS ADOPT-A-TRAIL DAY AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET TO KNOW YOUR FELLOW RACERS, HAVE FUN, AND GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY. WE HAD A GREAT TURNOUT LAST YEAR. LET’S SEE IF WE CAN IMPROVE ON THOSE NUMBERS THIS SEASON!

WOODY CREEK CRITERIUM

We are tremendously thankful to our sponsors for their commitment to the club. Their support allows us to put on a great race series with very low entry fees. The community ramped up its sponsorship again this year and the Aspen Cycling Club continues to enjoy generous support. Many club members signed on as new or continuing sponsors or increased their commitment.

Special thanks goes out to our new Title Sponsor The Aspen Club and new Breakaway Sponsor Aspen Sports, returning Presenting Sponsors Alpine Bank (Helene Gude) and Shane Aspen Real Estate (Steven Shane). Also returning this season are 520 Grill (Troy Selby), The Ranger Station (Patrick Wasserman), Viceroy Snowmass (John Quigley), Aussie Plumbing and Heating (Chris White), Ryan Investment Management (Chris Ryan), Orthopaedic Associates of Aspen and Glenwood (George Trantow), Achieve Health & Performance (David Borchers M.D.), Chris Klug Properties (Chris Klug), Woody Creek Tavern (Kevin Wilson), Red Rock Diner (Bob Olenick), The Aspen Times, ZGtec, Inc. (Paul Fowler), Honey Stinger and Big Agnes (Len Zanni), The Limelight Hotel (Richard Stettner), Aspen Skiing Company, Aspen Anesthesia (Chris Beck), Strafe (John Gaston), Care for Cycling (Jame Carney), and Aspen Valley Hospital.

Please take the time to support and thank these sponsors. No other club series in Colorado comes close to the number of diversity of races we enjoy or has such low entry costs. These folks make it happen!

For 2015, the Aspen Cycling Club has made some important changes.

These sponsors make it possible for us to continue to offer an exceptional and low-cost race

series. Membership and race entry is FREE for Kids and High School/Middle School categories!

We offer online membership registration and race-package purchase via www.GetEvent.com.ACC absorbs all Get Event fees AND offers a $5.00 discount versus payment by mail or at a race start. Online registration simplifies membership registration for competitors and expedites early season data entry for results tabulation. To register online, go to the ACC web site “Application” page and follow the link to PreRace. I encourage anyone who plans to race regularly to purchase one of the race packages when registering—this allows you to race several races for free, eliminates the need to bring your $5.00 to each race, and expedites race-day registration. Race package prices include your membership dues. You may still register by filling out an application form (attached to the newsletter or downloaded from the website).

On Wednesday, July 29th, we will partner with Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers to hold a trails-maintenance night.
