Free Workshops for Teachers Saturday, March 14, 2015
Receive CEUs for attendance
9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Engineering Fairs – An Exciting Endeavour or Irrelevant Dinosaur? Tracy Davis, Sixth grade Science teacher, Euclid City Schools. B. Prim Ed, UCT, B.Ed, UNISA(Honors), M.A. Penn State University
Finding time to complete an engineering fair along with all the other demands on classroom time is a challenge. How can teachers justify completing an engineering fair in the science classroom? Davis argues that all science teachers should embrace an innovative engineering fair.
Teachers will receive a copy of Out of My Mind, a novel written by Sharon Draper and used by Davis to present problems and a forum for students to discuss how beneficial assistive devices can be, which she uses to lead into their work on the engineering fair. Teachers will be given a copy of her Engineering Design Resource Packet. This includes ways to help teachers with prepared instructional materials to teach a simple literature review, complete a patent search and prepare a simple engineering proposal. Connections to literacy standards will be highlighted throughout the presentation. Information about how to engage mentors for students, ideas on using community resources, and the value of problem solving as an end in itself, will be discussed.
10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Why Toys Make Good Medical Devices Jose Gomez-‐Marquez, The Little Devices Lab @ MIT. Learn about The Little Devices lab @MIT that explores the design, invention, and policy spaces for DIY health technologies around the world. Through hands-‐on activities during the workshop, see how simple toys can be hacked to create affordable medical technologies for communities in need. See http://littledevices.org/little-‐devices-‐big-‐ideas/diy-‐medical-‐technology-‐group-‐overview/ for further details.
