Pre-Conference Certification Courses

Racial Healing and Equitybuilding respect for diversity

This is an experiential course for all who seek to build harmony in our diverse world. By joining in a safe, respectful dialogue, participants will broaden their understanding of how the malady of prejudice plus power impacts all our lives. Rather than the usual tolerance training, this is a transformational process which results in a deeper recognition of the oneness of humankind. Activities include both knowledge for the mind and shared experience for the heart.Trainers: Derek Allen, Ken Ponds, & Amanda Satterfield, Glasswing Racial Healing, Albion, Michigan

Three Pillars of TraumaWise Carehealing in the other 23 hours

Key knowledge and skills for those who deal with the challenging behavior of trau matized children. Training includes practical tools to help chil dren experience safety, connect with caring adults, and manage internal emotions and impulses. Participants include parents, fos ter parents, teachers, child and youth care workers, and mentors. The trainer brings forty years of experience and recent ly served as the Commissioner for Children in the Northern Territory of Australia. The post-conference offers a separate trauma course for therapists and counselors.Trainer: Howard Bath, Psychologist, Queensland, Australia

Response Ability Pathways (RAP)connecting with kids in conflict

How do we reach youth who keep adults at bay? RAP puts the Circle of Courage into practice by providing skills to respond to needs rather than react to problems. Research on resilience, brain science, and positive youth development is translated into practical methods for building character strengths in all youth. This experiential training focuses on connecting with kids in pain, clarifying the private logic behind their behavior, and helping them develop effective coping strategies. Trainer: Steve Van Bockern, Augustana College, Sioux Falls, South Dakota

The Developmental Auditmending broken lives

Participants gain specific skills in this strength-based alternative to deficit-based assessment. Schools use the Audit for making informed decisions with students whose behavior is leading to failure and restrictive placements. Courts and treatment agencies employ the Audit for risk assessment and restorative planning. The young person is seen as the primary expert on his or her life and collaborates in exploring challenging life events, identifying strengths and needs, and developing a plan for growth.Trainers: Mark Freado, Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch, Amarillo, Texas, & Larry K. Brendtro, Starr, Albion, Michigan

Circle of Courage Foundationsthe reclaiming revolution

The Circle of Courage combines modern research on positive youth development with enduring truths from indigenous peoples who saw children as sacred. In order to rear caring, responsible children, we must meet basic needs for Belonging, Mastery, Independence, and Generosity. This session shows how schools, families, and communities are using these Circle of Courage principles as a birthright for all children and a blueprint for reclaiming vulnerable children at risk.
