THIS WEEK AT A GLANCEA pair of divisional matchups highlight Saturday’s action in Conference USA. Rice and North Texas will meet in the Mean Green’s home opener (1:30 p.m. CDT on FOX College Sports), while Charlotte plays its fi rst C-USA game when it travels to Middle Tennessee (6 p.m. CDT on the C-USA Digital Network).

Rice has won the last four meetings with North Texas, including a 41-21 decision in Houston last Oc-tober. Owls freshman RB Samuel Stewart entered last Saturday’s game at Texas with just one career rushing attempt before carrying it 25 times for 130 yards and two touchdowns. The Mean Green led into the fourth quarter at SMU last week, before falling for just the second time in 21 contests under Dan Mc-

Carney when leading after three quarters.

The Charlotte 49ers improved to 2-0 for the third straight year with a 34-10 win over Presbyterian, holding the Blue Hose to nine yards passing and a program-low 112 total yards. Junior WR Austin Duke

recorded his eighth career 100-yard receiving game, grabbing nine passes for 166 yards and a TD. Blue Raiders redshirt freshman WR Richie James had a strong day with 10 catches for 95 yards at No. 2 Ala-bama and has become a go-to receiver in the early going this season with 17 grabs through two games.

Louisiana Tech and UTSA have Saturday afternoon contests at Big 12 schools, with the Roadrunners playing at Oklahoma State for the second straight season (2:30 p.m. CDT on FOX Sports 1), while the

Bulldogs become the second straight C-USA oppo-nent for Kansas State (2 p.m. CDT on FOX Sports Regional Networks).

WKU becomes the second consecutive C-USA op-ponent to go to Indiana after FIU fell to the Hoosiers last week (3 p.m. CDT on ESPN News). WKU is 2-0 for the fi rst time since 2005 as it looks to add a win over a Big Ten school to its resume after winning at an SEC school in its opener.

ASN will be televising a tripleheader of games at East Division schools, beginning with Buff alo at Florida Atlantic (Noon EDT). The Owls battled Miami close for three quarters before falling to the Hurricanes in front of a sold out crowd at FAU Stadium last Friday. Florida Atlantic remains at home looking to get back on track in its fi rst-ever meeting with the Bulls.

The ASN action continues when Marshall welcomes Norfolk State to Huntington (3:30 p.m. EDT). This will be the second straight game for NSU against a C-USA school, as the Spartans lost to Old Dominion last week, 24-10. Marshall will look to get back on track after a tough road loss at longtime rival Ohio.

The third game of the day on ASN features NC State making a visit to Old Dominion (7 p.m. EDT). Both schools are off to 2-0 starts and the Monarchs wel-come an ACC opponent to Norfolk for the fi rst time. ODU sophomore Ray Lawry is off to a fantastic start, leading the FBS in rushing (219.0 yards per game) and rushing touchdowns (six). He also has topped the 200-yard rushing mark in three straight contests, dating back to last year’s season fi nale.

Rounding out Saturday’s action is FIU making its home debut with N.C. Central, Southern Miss playing on the road for the fi rst time at Texas State and UTEP renewing its I-10 rivalry with New Mexico State.

LAST WEEK’S TOP PERFORMERSHere’s a look at the league’s 300-yard passers, 100-yard rushers and 100-yard receivers from games of Sept. 10-12:

CHARLOTTE MOVES TO 2-0Charlotte used a tremendous defensive eff ort to im-prove to 2-0 for the third consecutive season, win-ning its home opener, 34-10 over Presbyterian. Play-ing in front of the largest crowd in Jerry Richardson Field history, the 49ers held the Blue Hose to just 112 yards of total off ense, including nine yards passing.

DOUGHTY DEALINGWKU senior QB Brandon Doughty threw for 441 yards and a touchdown in the Hilltoppers confer-ence-opening 41-38 win over Louisiana Tech Thurs-day night. Doughty has now thrown a touchdown pass in 16 straight games, tying TCU’s Trevone Boykin for longest current streak in FBS.

LAYING DOWN THE LAWRYOld Dominion sophomore RB Ray Lawry continued his torrid streak in Saturday’s 24-10 rain-soaked win over Norfolk State, rushing for 215 yards and two touchdowns. He leads the nation with 438 yards through two games and is tied with Alabama’s Der-rick Henry for the FBS lead with six rushing touch-downs. Lawry has posted three consecutive 200-yard rushing games dating back to last year’s season fi nale.

WINNING STREAKSWKU carries a seven-game winning streak into Sat-urday’s game at Indiana. Only three FBS schools have a longer current winning streak than the Hilltoppers.

QUICK PLAYConference USA teams are playing at an incredibly fast pace in 2015. Four of the top fi ve teams in total plays in a single game have been C-USA schools: 98 UCLA vs. UNLV 9-1296 Rice at Texas 9-12

96 Florida Atlantic at Tulsa 9-5

95 Middle Tenn. vs. Jackson St. 9-5

95 UTSA at Arizona 9-3

95 Purdue at Marshall 9-695 Ball State vs. VMI 9-3

MOVE OVER MANNINGSConference USA saw the rarity of brothers playing quarterback for league teams on back-to-back nights on national television this past weekend. Louisiana Tech senior Jeff Driskel started for the Bulldogs and threw for 357 yards in a 41-38 loss at WKU on Thurs-day night. After starter Jaquez Johnson was injured early in Friday night’s game against Miami (Fla.), the Owls turned to redshirt freshman Jason Driskel, who was 17-of-30 for 255 yards and a touchdown in his fi rst action at FAU.

CHARLOTTE 49ERSThe 49ers improved to 2-0 for the third straight year with a 34-10 win over Pres-byterian, holding the Blue Hose to nine yards passing and a program-low 112 total yards. Junior WR Austin Duke recorded his eighth career 100-yard receiving game, grabbing nine passes for 166 yards and a TD. Junior QB Matt Johnson’s 39-yard TD pass to Duke in the second quarter was the fi rst one-play touchdown drive of the season and the 14th in the program’s 24-game history. Junior RB Kalif

Phillips scored Charlotte’s fi rst rushing TD of the season and now has 33 career rushing TDs.

FIU PANTHERSThe Panthers led much of the game before eventually falling at Indiana Saturday night, 36-22, as FIU turnovers set up the fi nal two Hoosiers scores. A week after catching 11 passes at UCF, sophomore WR Thomas Owens had nine grabs for 166 yards and his fi rst two career touchdowns. With his 75-yard touchdown reception Owens tied Jonnu Smith for the sixth longest TD reception in FIU history and his 166 yards was fourth-best in school history. Sophomore QB Alex McGough threw for 249 yards and matched his career high with three TD passes. Linebackers Vontarius West (14) and Anthony Wint (13) each had a career-high in tackles.

FLORIDA ATLANTIC OWLSFlorida Atlantic trailed by seven late in the third quarter before Miami pulled away for a 44-20 win over The Owls Friday night. The game took place in front of a record setting crowd of 30,321 fans at FAU Stadium. Freshman QB Jason Driskel

replaced an injured Jaquez Johnson early in the game and was 17-of-30 overall for 155 yards and a touchdown in his fi rst collegiate action. Junior RB Jay Warren

rushed for a career-high 132 yards and a touchdown, while sophomore RB Greg

Howell added 78 yards on 13 carries.

MARSHALL THUNDERING HERDMarshall had its six-game road-win streak snapped by Ohio on Saturday, 21-10. Junior RB Devon Johnson ran for 170 yards and scored the longest touchdown of his career on a 73-yard run in the second quarter. He has 11 games of 100 or more yards rushing in his Herd career, tied for fi fth with Ahmad Bradshaw. Senior S Taj

Letman’s fi rst quarter interception was his second this season and seventh of his career. It was the Herd’s fi fth pick in 2015. Senior P Tyler Williams’ nine punts in the game were the most in his 42-game Herd career.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE BLUE RAIDERSThe Blue Raiders fell at No. 2 Alabama on Saturday, 37-10. Freshman QB Brent

Stockstill was 22-of-42 for 174 yards, while junior QB Austin Grammer threw a 15-yard scoring pass to junior WR Rod Ducksworth in the fourth quarter on his only pass attempt. Junior CB Jeremy Cutrer had an 80-yard interception return to set up MT’s only touchdown and led the team with eight total tackles.

OLD DOMINION MONARCHSThe Monarchs moved to 2-0 with a 24-10 victory over Norfolk State in a rain-soaked game that was twice delayed by lightning. Sophomore RB Ray Lawry

Freshman QB Shuler Bentley went 12-for-22 for 122 yards and threw one inter-ception. The 12 completions for ODU is the third-fewest in school history and fewest since seven completions against Georgetown in 2009. C-USA BOWL SYNOPSISConference USA has secured guaranteed commit-ments with seven bowl partners for the 2015 season, as well as one secondary agreement: The Arizona, Gildan New Mexico, Miami Beach, Popeyes Bahamas, R+L Carriers New Orleans, St. Petersburg and Za-xby’s Heart of Dallas Bowls are primary agreements. The Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana, is a secondary agreement, should the ACC or SEC not be able to provide a bowl-eligible team. There is no set selection order among C-USA’s bowl partners.

C-USA and the College Football Playoff

As a member of the College Football Playoff , Confer-ence USA will be a part of one of the College Football Playoff bowls if it has the highest rated champion from among the American, C-USA, Mid-American, Mountain West and Sun Belt Conferences.

The Playoff

During the 2014-15 season, college football entered a new era when postseason playoff s began. The for-mat is simple: top four teams, two semifi nals played in bowl games and a national championship game played in a diff erent city each year. Each semifi nal will be played during the New Year’s holiday with the national championship game in prime time on a Monday night at least a week later.

The Selection Committee

A selection committee will choose the four teams for the playoff based on their performance during the regular season, including, strength of schedule, head-to-head results, championships won, and other factors. The teams will be seeded so that No. 1 will play No. 4 in one semifi nal and No. 2 will meet No. 3 in the other, with the two winners advancing to the national championship game.

The Rotation

The semifi nals will rotate among six diff erent bowls, extending the experience to more fans. In the years when the bowls are not hosting semifi nals, the bowls will feature eight other teams in four compelling matchups.

For the 2015-16 season, the Peach Bowl (Dec. 31), Fi-esta Bowl (Dec. 31), Rose Bowl presented by North-western Mutual (Jan. 1) and Allstate Sugar Bowl (Jan. 1) will host its regular bowl games, while the Capital One Orange (Dec. 31) and Goodyear Cotton Bowl (Dec. 31) will host semifi nals. The College Football Championship will be held on Monday, Jan. 11 in Glen-dale, Arizona.

GILDAN NEW MEXICO BOWLConference USA will enter its second year as a pri-mary partner with the Gildan New Mexico Bowl and is scheduled to send a team to Albuquer-que each seasons between 2015 and 2019. C-USA BOWL OVERVIEW2015-2019Conference USA will have 10 bowl affi liations through the 2019 season, securing a minimum of fi ve berths annually and off ering fans a number of great destina-tions across America and beyond.

Conference USA has agreements with three bowls in the state of Florida: the Boca Raton Bowl, the Miami Beach Bowl and the St. Petersburg Bowl, along with an agreement with the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl near the coast of the Sunshine State. C-USA maintains longtime relationships with the Zaxby’s Heart of Dal-las Bowl and the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl in the central region as well as the Gildan New Mexico Bowl in the southwest and the Hawaii Bowl in the far West. New this year will be an agreement with the new Arizona Bowl in Tucson, Ariz.

Conference USA has a secondary agreement with a bowls also located right within the league’s footprint, giving teams the opportunity to participate in the In-dependence Bowl in Shreveport, La.

In these bowls, Conference USA will have the oppor-tunity to face opponents from the American Athletic, Big 12, Big Ten, Mid-American, Mountain West and Sun Belt Conferences.

2015 C-USA BOWL SYNOPSISConference USA has secured guaranteed commit-ments with seven bowl partners for the 2015 season, as well as one secondary agreement: The Arizona, Gildan New Mexico, Miami Beach, Popeyes Bahamas, R+L Carriers New Orleans, St. Petersburg and Za-xby’s Heart of Dallas Bowls are primary agreements. The Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La., is a sec-ondary agreement, should the ACC or SEC not be able to provide a bowl-eligible team. There is no set selection order among C-USA’s bowl partners.

As a member of the College Football Playoff , Confer-ence USA will be a part of one of the CFP bowls if it produces the highest rated champion from among the American Athletic, C-USA, Mid-American, Moun-tain West and Sun Belt Conferences.

INSTANT REPLAYConference USA uses the instant replay program implemented in 2005. C-USA will use the model adopted by all FBS conferences in 2011, which re-lies on a replay offi cial (RO) to both call for the instant replay and have the fi nal decision upon review.

The RO will have access to the referee through a vibrating pager. When the RO feels there is a call that warrants a review and the play is reviewable, he will page the referee.

The referee will kill the clock and announce that a ruling on the fi eld is being reviewed. The RO will then review all aspects of the play and can change the original call or allow it to stand. The RO, as well as the communicator (CO), and technician (at a minimum), will be utilized to insure that all plays are reviewed in an effi cient and timely manner.

In addition to the RO having the ability to change a call rather than the referee, the other signifi cant diff erence to the Conference USA instant replay policy relates to a coaches challenge.

Coaches will be allowed to challenge an on-fi eld ruling once per game. A coach may initiate a chal-lenge by calling a time out (if he has a time out available) and informing the referee prior to the ball being put back in play. If the on-fi eld ruling is reversed, that team’s time out will not be charged.

There will be no clock adjustments unless there is a replay reversal on a play that ran time off the clock and, upon further review, the clock would have been stopped. The referee and RO will con-fi rm the correct time and communicate it to the timer.

Instant replay is a very unique situation and there are many aspects to it. C-USA replay offi cials, referees and communicators were provided with intensive training at a clinic prior to the start of the season.

UAB FOOTBALL BACK IN 2017 Six months after the program was dropped fol-lowing the 2014 season, UAB reinstated football on June 1, 2015. The NCAA informed UAB that football play can resume beginning with the 2017 season, and the team can compete at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level.

The NCAA informed UAB that the Blazers’ football program will not be subject to FBS requirements for a period of three academic years, beginning with 2015-16, and that it would be counted as an FBS opponent once it begins participating in out-side competition. UAB would be eligible for post-season bowl competition should it meet qualify-ing standards and also would be eligible for the Conference USA championship.

“I am so excited that UAB Football will return to FBS competition in 2017,” head football coach Bill Clark said. “Like our fans, I wanted to light the scoreboard much sooner, but doing it right is more important than doing it fast, and this was our best option. We want a program that is here to stay. We have to start by building a new, stron-ger foundation. We need to take our time to do it right, then we can compete for conference and bowl championships.

“I want to thank our conference, the UAB ad-ministration, and the NCAA for working with us to make this possible,” Clark said. “Most impor-tantly, I want to thank the Blazer Nation. The love and support from UAB fans has been incredible. Please don’t stop. We still have a lot to do and we need all of you. Go Blazers!”

Conversations with the NCAA and Conference USA centered on recruiting, building a roster and maintaining FBS status.

“We couldn’t be more grateful to C-USA and the NCAA for assisting us through the reinstatement process,” UAB Athletics Director Mark Ingram

said. “They have worked with our athletics team to get us the answers we needed in a timely man-ner so that our coaches can begin recruiting.”
